In Scandinavia, the Nisse is a mischievous gnome-like creature that protects farms but can turn nasty if you forget to leave him a bowl of porridge. Wales has Mari Lwyd, a ghostly horse figure with a real horse skull, who goes door to door challenging people to rhyme battles (yes, it’s as weird as it sounds).
