Nation, I'm leave to lean with you here for an elite eight preview.
2:00
This episode is brought to you by Mazda.
2:02
Like our players, we're driven by the details.
2:04
Highlights make the real, but the work behind them makes it count.
2:07
Stay tuned for this week's movie, the game forward.
2:09
Then the all new Mazda CX-5, more to move every side of you.
2:15
Today on the show, I'll analyze the key matchups and strengths for each side of the Arizona
2:22
You lead eight matchup, one versus two, outline the keys to the game with the corresponding
2:28
And of course, give my prediction.
2:29
Let's dive right in.
2:31
Arizona to me has the advantage on the interior, even though Purdue is known for their interior
2:37
They've got former All-American, Trey Kaufman, and they have All-American Point Guard
2:44
They have a recipe to score.
2:45
They will be able to manufacture points because Matt Painter is a grade X as a nose coach,
2:49
and they have the personnel to score.
2:52
But I think Arizona can one, limit the ability to score of the number one offense in the
2:56
college basketball, and two, take advantage of a so, so defense.
3:01
Arkansas Purdue are not too dissimilar in terms of their defensive metrics, and we saw
3:06
Arizona lived in the paint and dominated.
3:07
The pace will be different.
3:09
Arizona got in a track meet and thrived against Arkansas.
3:13
Against Purdue, it will be slower.
3:15
But the same thing stands.
3:16
I'll get to a couple of stats about paint dominance in a moment, but I think the real
3:20
key is Arizona has a better mix of defensive dominance and offensive dominance, whether
3:25
the number one team in the Kenpaw rankings, number four on offense, number three on defense.
3:31
And I think they're even better than that on defense.
3:33
Now Arizona, to me, has the advantage because Purdue runs all their stuff through Trey Kaufman
3:38
and Ren post ups and catches on short rolls and shots like that.
3:42
Arizona's one got the athletes to minimize his impact, but two can have the physicality
3:48
to not let him overwhelm them, whereas against Texas, Purdue overwhelm Texas.
3:53
And I think the physicality and just looking at the teams and seeing them being in person,
3:58
watching both teams yesterday, Arizona's bigger, stronger, faster than Purdue, and I think
4:02
the physicality, the sheer size of Arizona will really be difficult for Purdue.
4:07
I think Arizona will score on the inside at will in this game and Purdue.
4:12
The question is, can they score on Arizona inside because if not, I think you got to say
4:17
I think Arizona has more ways to score than Purdue, even though Purdue is the number one
4:20
team in the nation offensively.
4:22
But if you look at what Purdue's record is, it's 38.
4:25
There are two seed, they won the big 10 tournament, but they've largely struggled against the
4:30
They've lost badly to Michigan at home.
4:33
They lost to Illinois at home.
4:35
They lost to Iowa State at home.
4:37
And they've gotten better, but Arizona can take away the rim and take away the lawyer.
4:42
And Fletcher lawyer is a big expector.
4:44
We'll get to him in a little bit, but I think taking away the rim and taking away Fletcher
4:50
lawyer is something that most teams have to say, I think Arizona can do both.
4:55
And that really sets up Arizona nicely.
4:57
Now here are some statistics that back up the next claim I've got.
5:02
The next claim is, is this.
5:04
If I'm Arizona, I want Braden Smith, yes, Braden Smith, the first team of all American
5:08
a season ago, the preseason player of the year, this year, second team of all American.
5:12
I want Braden Smith to be a score against my length.
5:16
The length of Arizona, rather than a guy who accumulates assists.
5:18
I'd rather Braden Smith score 20 that Braden Smith have eight or more assists.
5:23
This is the all-time assist leader in college basketball.
5:27
But I'm not scared of him as a score.
5:29
Arizona holds pick and roll ball handlers to 35% shooting.
5:33
And the roll man, which would be Trey Coffman ran largely to 44% shooting.
5:39
So that's really good because I'll give you the flipped numbers in a moment.
5:42
TKR, Trey Coffman ran, has a great push shot, which means he's going to catch the short
5:48
Arizona's got the length to make that a more difficult shot, but also at the girth to make
5:51
him not get the ball in the block and have an advantage.
5:54
Here's where Pordeaux excels and they set up their number one offense.
5:57
They're 99th percent down spot up shooting, which is 42.4%, and those are not all threes
6:02
but they're largely threes.
6:04
They're pick and roll ball handler, which is Braden Smith shoots when they shoot, when
6:09
he is forced to shoot, I should say, they're actually considered below average because
6:13
they're shooting just 39% because he shoots more mid ranges due to his diminutive stature
6:20
And so you want him to shoot rather than to pass the roll.
6:23
They're 99th percent down post up offense shooting nearly 61%.
6:28
They have a lot of duck-ins to cluff and Trey Coffman ran, they ran them to perfection
6:32
late in the game against Texas, and that's one of the many reasons they won, along with
6:35
fouling up the big man for Texas, and there are many big for Arizona.
6:40
They're also 99th percent tile, excuse me, 92nd percent tile in pick and roll, the roll
6:45
man shooting, which is largely Trey Coffman ran, they shoot 64%.
6:49
So Arizona holds teams to 44% as the roll man, and 35% as the roll pick and roll ball handlers
6:56
produce just 39% in pick and roll ball handlers, but 64% in pick and roll roll men.
7:04
That's a enormous gap, that's a chasm right there, you're not going to see a gap more
7:12
And Arizona, if they limit that number to 50% or 55% in a roll man, that's a huge difference
7:19
because I also don't think they're going to get as many looks on that because they typically
7:24
So then the attention shifts to this, it's lawyer.
7:28
The three seniors, lawyer, Smith and Trey Coffman ran are great, and everyone always says,
7:32
oh, Trey Coffman ran is really good, Smith's really good, lawyers, the guy who accelerates
7:37
them makes them better.
7:39
He's the metronome for Purdue, and he shoots well, they're really hard to beat.
7:42
But Arizona has the capacity to make Smith uncomfortable with the size, make Trey Coffman
7:47
ran see different bodies, and won't be overmatched in the physical department, in fact, they're
7:52
So it becomes a game, can Fletcher lawyer get loose and shoot?
7:57
And I think Purdue's best weapon is Matt Paner's X's nose, and Tommy Lloyd is a great pre-game
8:03
But can Fletcher lawyer get loose, is Purdue's only hope, knocking down threes, because Arizona
8:09
is the lead defensively near the rim, and I think offensively Arizona is going to find
8:14
Purdue is 36 non-defense, and they're not very good at protecting the rim whatsoever.
8:20
Purdue is just 29th percentile at defending the rim, allowing 59 percent fuel-goal percentage
8:28
That's really, really good.
8:29
It's actually better than what Arizona shoots from two, and they shoot like we've established
8:33
a ton of shots from near the rim.
8:35
Of course, the rim's a little different than five feet, but the point being is Arizona's
8:39
elite is shooting twos, and then they're playing a team that is very poor at defending the
8:43
rim, which is where Arizona likes to shoot their twos.
8:46
They're also considered speaking of Purdue poor at defending the pick and roll, and especially
8:51
the pick and roll ball handlers, allowing 47 percent shooting percentage where Bradley
8:56
and Burys can thrive.
8:58
For reference, Braden Smith, who was in second team all-american with the free season player
9:01
of the year in college basketball, shoots 39 percent on that same percentage, so Purdue
9:07
allows 8 percent better for what are considered lesser players, and Arizona doesn't have lesser
9:15
They've got the big 12 pair of the year, and the top 10 pick is the guards coming off
9:18
those pick and rolls.
9:20
Now based on these numbers, I expect Arizona to limit Purdue's effectiveness from two,
9:25
and still thrive near the basket themselves, which means Arizona must take away Fletcher
9:29
lawyers' threes to make hard twos beat them, and I don't think Purdue has the capacity
9:34
to beat Arizona without making a lot of threes.
9:38
Speaking of vitality, I'll give the keys to the game next, statistical expectations and
9:43
more coming up right ahead after a word from Mazda.
9:53
This is the Mazda moving the game forward moment.
9:56
For those who know, the score never tells the whole story.
9:59
Arizona's Tobay Awaka slammed down a poster dunk all over Trayvon, Brazil yesterday in
10:04
the game that sent Arizona their first sweet 16 in the Tommy Lloyd era at some moment
10:08
to define the game.
10:10
There's more of these plays and players than the highlights.

11:48
So welcome back to lockedownwildcast, this is a breakdown of the elite eight match between
11:52
Arizona and Purdue.
11:53
Here are my keys for an Arizona win.
11:55
I believe Arizona should win, I believe they will win, but here's a first and foremost
12:01
Keep pre-vos on the court and avoid foul trouble.
12:03
Drake Kaufman ran, fouled out Matas Volkotitis, and that is why they won the game.
12:08
Play it in simple, that is exactly why they won the game because Texas is lone shock lockers
12:13
Arizona obviously has more depth in the front court, I think it'll be harder for him to
12:16
do so, but that's an important key.
12:19
Speaking of the glass and keeping big guys near it, you got to win the glass, and this
12:23
against a big team that has similar rebounding numbers, but Texas was small and many points
12:29
Volkotitis only played 22 minutes, and Texas has identical offensive rebounding numbers,
12:33
I believe Arizona can reach that number.
12:36
The next key, it's Fletcher lawyer.
12:39
Make Fletcher lawyer put the ball in the deck and don't get open catch and shoot threes.
12:43
Texas got a greedy and put a four-man lawyer, he ran around and scored easy shots early
12:49
in the game, set up Purdue well.
12:51
They limited for the most part rest of the game, but you don't want to let a lawyer get
12:55
loose and make threes.
12:57
And then my next key is the corresponding one, make Braden Smith a score.
13:01
Make Braden Smith shoot more than 12 shot attempts.
13:04
When he's shot more than 12 shot attempts, this team has struggled.
13:08
When Smith shoots a lot, it make or miss Purdue has lost.
13:13
When he shoots under a certain number, they win just about every game because his assist
13:17
So my number for you is how makes Smith shoot over 12 attempts and makes Smith and ideally
13:23
higher than that and makes Smith have fewer than seven assists.
13:27
And basically, you want fewer points accounted for by Braden Smith and I'll say about 30.
13:35
You want fewer points accounted for by Braden Smith and 30.
13:38
And his greatest ability is to pass the ball and it's the ability to make others better
13:47
Make him shoot mid-rangeers and floaters over Kreevoss and defend Traykov and round
13:53
Bodies on Fletcher lawyer in the short and in the strong side corner make Matt Painter
13:59
only win with execution and when they have to go man-to-man Arizona should not help.
14:04
Make Traykov and ran shoot hard shots, hook shots over the length.
14:07
He's very good at that.
14:08
Make Braden Smith, most importantly, shoot mid-rangeers that he doesn't necessarily want to shoot
14:13
when he wants to find the ball inside.
14:16
Lawyers the weapon to keep away and keep away from good looks.
14:19
He is the guy that Matt Painter is going to scheme for open threes.
14:22
There's going to get him open.
14:23
You hope he misses some, but for the most part you got to keep him and do not help, do
14:27
not let him get loose.
14:29
He's a guy who's a bit of a, when he's good, he's really good, when he's off, he's a bit
14:34
And you hope for that, but also I think Arizona's got the ability to make him feel off because
14:39
they have size and the ability to punish him on the other end.
14:43
Now another thing that Purdue does very well because they have an all-American point guard
14:46
is they don't turn the ball over very much.
14:48
A key that I would give is get a few steals and run.
14:52
If Arizona can get a few steals and run, I think that they can win this game by a lot
14:56
because Purdue doesn't turn the ball over and Arizona's got a big athleticism advantage.
15:00
They should win the paint points.
15:02
They should be able to get to the free throw line against Purdue and they should be able
15:07
to score against a team that's not particularly good defensively.
15:11
But if they can get out and run, I don't think Purdue's going to have the way to score enough
15:15
points to stay with an Arizona team that can speed this game up.
15:18
Arkansas tried to play a track me and out run Arizona.
15:21
And you saw John Calipari talk about it, he's like, yeah, this is a bad match, I didn't
15:25
want to see because of the size, but also athleticism.
15:28
Purdue's not going to try to play fast.
15:30
In fact, they're going to try to slow this game down.
15:32
But if Arizona can get out and score and transition, so I'm going to say I want ten or
15:35
more points off of turnovers, and of course, I would like, you know, fifteen or more
15:40
off of second chance points.
15:42
I want to see Coa Pete.
15:44
This has been a recurring theme.
15:45
I said this just about every game recently.
15:47
And Coa Pete plays assertively early in the game and takes it to the opposing four and
15:53
The other team really struggles to deal with that because of course, there's Tobio Walker
15:56
coming in to battle and bludgeon the opponents and will creep us as the height.
16:01
So Pete's got a mismatch and he can go, he can go at Traycoff and Renn and make Traycoff
16:05
and Renn one tired from defending, defending him, but two also maybe has to relent because
16:10
he knows how vital he is on the court.
16:12
The other thing is Traycoff and Renn is going to try his savvy tricks each ride and frankly,
16:17
And at the game, he got away with multiple hook and holds and he's going to try to do so
16:22
and get Arizona and Falchull.
16:24
See if Arizona can put an onus on him, defend and get him in Falchull and Coa Pete's the
16:30
And Bradley should be very aggressive in attacking Gray and Smith.
16:33
Gray and Smith is a good defender actually, but he's very small.
16:36
And if you're going to attack, the reason that Purdue is not very good at defending
16:40
picking roles one because their guards aren't particularly great on defense, but two,
16:44
they don't have shoppers.
16:45
It's strong dudes, big strong physical players, but they're not athletes near the room.
16:49
Jayden Bradley should be able to get all the way to the room and score at the rack against
16:53
not very good shop blockers.
16:55
And speaking of aggression, I really do think Purdue is outmaned in this.
17:01
I think Arizona can absolutely outman out physical out athlete this team and live at the
17:05
foul line and also get Purdue into an uncomfortable situation where they have to play more quickly.
17:12
They have to relent and give up easy baskets by not fouling and therefore they have to
17:17
And I just think you could get away from them.
17:19
Of course, they've got a ton of composure, they've played a ton of big games.
17:22
And I think the biggest thing that scares me of this game for Arizona is just how composed
17:26
Gray and Smith and Fletcher lawyer, those type of guys will be when playing good athletes,
17:30
when playing against strong opponents because they've played in national championships.
17:34
They've played in big games, they expect to be here.
17:37
And some teams do not.
17:39
I expect Arizona with that all said to score in the paint and live in the paint as well.
17:44
And of course, you add a couple of threes, this game becomes different.
17:47
I expect around 60 pop points, paint oriented points and Arizona had 90 against Arkansas,
17:51
90, which means they've scored X amount of points in the paint and X amount of free throws.
17:56
It added up to 90, it was 60 points in the paint and 30 made free throws yesterday.
17:59
I'm going to say 60 pop points in this game, Arizona should win and they should win comfortably.
18:04
I think they could exceed that, but that's a number I will leave as kind of the baseline.
18:09
I think the slower pace means there's fewer free throws, but I do think Arizona lives at the line again.
18:14
And coming up next, I'll give you my score predictions, statistical leaders,
18:17
who guards whom all that ahead next unlocked on Wildcats.

Welcome back to Lockdown Wildcat.
20:17
Leave to lean with you here.
20:19
So you know I like to get in the nitty-gritty.
20:20
I gave you the analytical stuff about make, brain, smith, shoot, Arizona should dominate in the glass.
20:25
But who's going to guard who?
20:28
We've got to talk about matchups.
20:29
So here are my predicted matchups.
20:31
And I'm not going to go anything too crazy.
20:32
I was a little surprised.
20:33
Burries defended A-Cuff at the start.
20:35
You saw Bradley defending plenty.
20:37
And you saw A-Cuff try to defend Burries, Burries scored early.
20:41
Most of the other matchups made sense to me.
20:44
In this case, I think it'll be similar.
20:47
I could be off by one, depending on matchups.
20:49
I think you'll mostly get Bradley on Smith.
20:51
You could see some Burries.
20:52
You could see some Kartchenko.
20:53
But I think it'll mostly be Bradley.
20:57
I'd be interested if they were to put Kartchenko on him
21:01
and make him just shoot over length the whole time.
21:03
Kartchenko just kind of hounds him.
21:05
And then they put some speed on lawyer to run around those screens.
21:08
Because they're going to run a billion screens for lawyer.
21:11
And my belief is that Kartchenko defense lawyer.
21:14
But I would not be surprised to see that flip in Kartchenko defend Smith.
21:19
And you see Bradley flyer on screens and defend Fletcher lawyer
21:23
and try to make it hard because his speed impacts the shooting Fletcher lawyer.
21:26
Arizona has done that a couple of times.
21:29
He defended Mom Chilovich.
21:30
So that's, I kind of think that's possible.
21:32
I'll go Bradley on Smith, Burries on Cox, Kartchenko on lawyer.
21:36
But it could be Bradley and Kartchenko flip,
21:38
Pete on Traykov and Ren.
21:40
I'll be interested to see that matchup because Pete,
21:42
he's very strong, he'll hold his weight.
21:45
But he is prone to fouling and Traykov and Ren's savvy.
21:48
But I was, I was actually at this point.
21:49
I really liked Traykov and Ren.
21:50
I thought he was dirty in that game,
21:52
got away with some hook and holes.
21:54
It was absolutely necessary.
21:55
He won the game by fouling out,
21:57
vocalized the first half and the second half.
21:59
And when I say fouling out, I'm not saying quite literally
22:01
fouling out of the game.
22:02
But it made him be taken out of the game by Sean Miller.
22:06
And I think that could be interesting.
22:08
Of course, a walker can come in.
22:09
And of course, Kreeboss can guard him as well.
22:12
And then I think Kreeboss will guard Kluff.
22:14
I think Purdue goes Smith on Bradley, Cox on Burries,
22:18
Cox is their best perimeter defender.
22:21
I'll go lawyer on Kartchenko.
22:23
I can see Kartchenko drive lawyer and score.
22:25
He attacks closeouts well.
22:27
Traykov and Ren on Pete, Kluff on Kreeboss.
22:30
I think Yvonne can attack Cox, like I said.
22:32
I think Burries and Bradley should attack Picking Rolls
22:35
because we talked about how weak Purdue
22:37
is in defending Picking Rolls for the ball handlers.
22:39
And I expect Purdue to try a secret weapon of playing.
22:42
Daniel Jacobson, a seven foot four,
22:44
kind of little used big guy on their team.
22:46
I could see them trying to match size with him
22:48
and play he and Traykov and Ren
22:50
try to alter Arizona from what they're used to
22:53
and maybe make themselves a little more stout
22:55
on the interior defensively,
22:56
but sacrifice a little bit on the rebound.
22:58
I know he's very tall, but Oscar Kluff
23:00
is a better rebound during his more sturdy.
23:02
Those are a couple of predictions I have.
23:04
Now let's get to the game script.
23:06
The game script to me is this game will be slower
23:09
than the game against Arkansas,
23:12
which is nothing crazy to say.
23:13
Like everyone knows that Arkansas wanted to track me,
23:17
but they got what they asked for in Arizona school though.
23:20
Arizona school is 128.5 points per 100 possessions.
23:24
Purdue gives up 100.
23:25
Arizona only gives up 90 per 100 possessions.
23:28
And then if you were to look at tempo,
23:30
tempo is that they're similar in this,
23:34
but Purdue is definitely slower.
23:36
Purdue's in the 300s.
23:38
They usually take about 19 seconds
23:40
of the 30 second shot clock,
23:41
which is 312th in the country.
23:45
I think Purdue's gonna want to keep this game in the 70s
23:47
and give themselves a chance and by virtue of that,
23:49
I think that Arizona probably doesn't score too many more points
23:55
But I think Purdue has a harder time scoring
23:58
than they typically do against Arizona.
23:59
One, because Arizona is very good defensively.
24:01
But two, and most importantly,
24:02
I just think the person that's hard for what Purdue does well
24:05
is they overwhelm you on the interior
24:07
and then they have guys who can knock down shots.
24:10
I think Arizona is going to take away the three-point line
24:13
and it's going to be Purdue mid-range jump shots
24:16
and push shots from Ferry Coffman and Hook shots
24:19
and Ferry Coffman mid-range jump shots from Brainsman.
24:21
I think Fletcher, lawyer, is going to have a hard time
24:24
getting shots off against the Arizona defense.
24:26
And the more I talk, the more I think Bradley will guard him actually.
24:29
And I think it's just going to be hard
24:31
for Purdue to generate enough shots
24:34
to score enough points to outweigh the possession advantage
24:37
that Arizona, I think, should have by one,
24:40
free throws getting easy shots near the rim,
24:42
free throws and layups, as well as offensive rebounds.
24:45
I think Arizona, hot take here.
24:47
I think Arizona's going to make more threes
24:49
than Purdue in this game.
24:50
I think Arizona's going to be so determined to take away
24:52
the three-point line for Fletcher,
24:53
where you're going to see a guy like Anthony Delor
24:55
so hit a couple threes.
24:56
He's been relatively quiet.
24:58
I think Braden Burries can really thrive in this game.
25:00
I think Jaden Bradley can get to the wreck.
25:04
So I haven't looked at any of the Kenpon projections
25:07
or anything like that.
25:08
I think the spread's about five and a half points.
25:12
I think Arizona wins by 10.
25:14
I think Arizona wins by 10.
25:15
I'm going to go 8170, I'll go 11.
25:19
8170 Arizona beats Purdue.
25:24
I think Matt Painter makes this game close
25:26
because I think he's an amazing tactical coach.
25:28
They may slow the game down.
25:28
They may not have many turnovers,
25:30
but I just think in watching these two teams play
25:33
that Arizona's on a different level than Purdue.
25:35
I was there at the game and I just believe
25:38
that Arizona's size, straight togetherness,
25:41
ability to score from different positions.
25:43
It's not just one guy.
25:44
We've had six guys who are over double digits.
25:47
The seventh guy, score eight.
25:48
And you're able to generate good looks.
25:51
Manufacturers those looks through time and time again
25:53
and also defend at a very high level.
25:56
I believe Arizona is going to win this game by double digits
25:59
and advance their first final four since 2001
26:02
and the first one under Tommy Lloyd.
26:04
Please let me know what your guys' thoughts are on the game.
26:06
Your comment, your scores below, some x factors,
26:09
thoughts that you believe in.
26:10
I'll tell you who my leading score is right here.
26:12
I've got Jade and Bradley leading the way in this game
26:17
He's going to take the Brayden Smith match up personally
26:20
and he's going to score around 20 points in this game,
26:22
get him to the rack.
26:23
And I think you're going to see a nice performance
26:25
from Anthony DeLore, so hitting a couple of threes
26:27
and Purdue packs at him.
26:28
That's my prediction.
26:29
I think the veterans lead the way,
26:30
most crevades with a double double as well.
26:32
And you see, of course, the 10 and a buries and P effective.
26:35
It's a team affair.
26:37
It's hard to predict, particularly in score.
26:39
I'm sorry, Bradley with 20 to lead the way for Arizona.
26:43
And a couple of clutch shots from Anthony DeLore,
26:44
so to fend off a late Purdue rally, Arizona by 11,
26:48
Arizona to the final four and likely setting up a date
26:52
I'd imagine Michigan's going to find their way there as well.
26:55
