Jeremiyah Love is the undisputed top running back in the 2026 NFL Draft, but the Washington Commanders need more than just speed to fix their backfield. The search for the perfect roster fit requires looking past the highlights and focusing on the non-negotiable traits required by David Blough's offense. Can the Commanders find a three-down enforcer who balances pass protection grit with explosive playmaking?
Jonah Coleman emerges as a primary target, offering a unique blend of lower-body power and high-volume receiving skills that could solve multiple roster holes. While current options like Rachaad White provide fluidity in space, the need for a forward-falling bruiser who sticks his foot in the ground is clear. This evaluation breaks down the full big board, from the record-breaking speed of Mike Washington Jr. to the disciplined grinding of Kaytron Allen, ensuring the next generation of Washington backs can stone a blitz and dominate the A-gap.

I love is the number one running back in the 2026 NFL draft hands down, but when you're
looking for the guy that fits all of the traits, you got to dig just a little bit deeper.
You are Lockdown Commanders, your daily podcast on the Washington Commanders, part of the
Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
Welcome inside today's episode of Lockdown Commanders.
I am your host, your guy on the ground, David Harrison, and on today's episode continuing
our big board series of versatile enforcer like Jonah Coleman solves multiple roster
holes and high level vision and past pro are non-negotiables for new running backs for
the Washington Commanders to consider, which is why Notre Dame's Jeremiah Love comes into
next weekend.
The NFL draft one week away as of today as the top back on everybody's board.
I don't care who's board you're looking at, Jeremiah Love is going to be the top guy,
and certainly that holds true here on this running back big board.
Jeremiah Love coming in number one overall out of Notre Dame, our second back on the
big board, Jadarian Price again, out of Notre Dame.
And I know there are some who think that Jadarian Price when it's all said and done could actually
have a better career than Jeremiah Love, but not bold enough to say Jeremiah Love, not
the dude that you draft first in this year's class if you're drafting.
Back Mike Washington, Jr. out of Arkansas comes in third, Emmett Johnson out of Nebraska
comes in fourth.
Pretty sure I heard a report that he had a visit with the Washington Commanders again.
You can read too much.
You can read not enough into those visits so we don't dive too deep into him here, but
pretty sure he did have a visit with the Commanders, Kate Tron Allen out of Penn State
is fifth Jonah Coleman, who we're going to talk a good amount about later out of Washington
comes in sixth Eli Hydernike Hyden Reich, I don't know why I threw it extra R in there.
Eli Hyden Reich out of Navy comes in seventh, Kaelin Black out of Indiana is number eight,
Jamari Taylor out of Virginia number nine, Noah Widdington out of Oregon are 10th back
on the big board and just for good measure and because he's one of my favorite guys in
the draft this year.
Number 11 Roman Hempi out of Indiana.
So that is the top 10 and listen, I've kind of shifted gears a little bit here on the
big board series because causing a little bit of confusion.
It's hard to mass communicate these types of things.
Basically what we're looking for guys is who fits the traits that the Washington Commanders
are looking for in these position groups and that's how I've been stacking them, but it's
been getting confused as saying that's who's going to get drafted first.
So moving forward, we're going to simplify this just a little bit because we got to communicate
this to everybody.
It's not enough that I understand and can get the context is not enough that some of you
can also do it, which I do appreciate.
We need everybody as many people as possible to be able to follow along because that's
the intention, right?
The intention is not to try to big brain anybody.
The intention is to try to communicate something that everybody can track.
So this list is my order of draft stock.
This is the order of the draft stock, which is certainly obviously very, very important.
But we are going to talk about who the best trait fits are because that is really the
ultimate reason we're doing this exercise.
I could come on here and tell you who the best, who the order that everybody says these
as are going to draft it in, but why would you come here for that?
You can go to any of those websites that have those boards readily available for you,
which you come here for is the trait fits, how they fit with your Washington Commanders.
And that's what we're going to talk about here and we're going to start off there because
the best trait fit for the Washington Commanders, not Jeremiah Love though.
He's very, very close.
Don't get me wrong.
Jonah Coleman is the back that comes out as far as I see it with the most blocks checks.
Again, if you put a checklist up, which we're going to do here in just a second of what
the wash commanders need and the running back group, Jonah Coleman checks pretty much every
single box out of Washington again, not a number one overall pick, not a first round
pick, not a day one guy.
But he does fit a lot of those blocks, more blocks than anybody else, including Jeremiah
Love, who is because of his talent level and the blocks that he does check the best all
around fit for the Washington Commanders in this year's NFL draft and some recent reports
coming out from meeting members out there that Jeremiah Love to the Washington Commanders,
see him on the board number seven, they're going to absolutely pounce on him now again, could
be real.
Could also be smoke screen.
They might be one of the team to jump up at number six and take Jeremiah Love because
hey, we think Washington's going to jump all over him.
So we need to jump up to number six or number four or wherever it is that we can jump in
order to take him.
And if the wash commanders, that's what their goal is and then pushes the guy they actually
want at number seven further down the board, just a little bit.
You never know what you can believe, especially this last week leading up to the NFL draft.
The best value overall, CJ Donaldson, Adam Ohio State, we're going to talk about him in
just a little bit too.
The most likely player on this board, I think, to be under drafted, to be drafted lower
and then to then which is the good news for the team and drafts them to then overproduce
out produce his draft position.
I think is Eli Haydenreich out of Navy.
I think that Navy military academy kind of stigma just kind of draws those guys down a
little bit in their potential and all that stuff.
I think he does have a good amount of potential now again, there has been a good amount of
buzz about him, a good amount of attention spent to him, you know, in the scouting circuits,
all those types of things.
So certainly potentially could you draft a commensurate with this talent.
If there is a guy on this list that I think could end up outperforming his draft capital,
the most Eli Haydenreich out of Navy is that guy, the most likely to be overdrafted,
a guy who might be drafted a little bit earlier than he's actually produced at least in
year one, a generic price out of Notre Dame, not really anything that he's done or any any
fault of his own, just kind of a big gap there between that number one back and the number
two back and then, you know, teams that want to running back like when you got the best
guy left on the board, sitting in front of you, do you pull the trigger earlier?
Do you kind of take the chance and maybe he's going to be there a little bit later.
So generic and price is the guy that I think, again, not a negative towards him, just kind
of a fact of the situation could potentially be overdrafted.
So what are we looking for when we talk about a Washington commanders running back in the
NFL draft and again, it's based on a scheme that we have yet to see in person, Ben Johnson,
flavors and David Blatt, that's exactly what we expect, but also influences from Jeff
Brom, his old college coach who he maintains contact with Kevin O'Connell at a Minnesota
who we played for for a little while. Cliff Kingsbury, obviously, he's been around
as a player and then as assistant coach, the athletic profile, that seems to kind of
fit. And again, you want different types of backs as well.
We could have done a breakout series like we do with the receiver group, but truthfully,
we're getting a little close to this final mock draft coming on Monday.
I got to get these lists out to you guys so you understand what we're working with alignment
versatility. You want a guy that can operate from deep in the back field when the quarterback
is under center, but you also want a guy who can operate when the quarterback is in shotgun
because Jaden is going to be in both more under center than we've seen before, but don't
get it twisted. He's still going to be in shotgun. You need contact balance. A guy that
can get hit, get bumped, go through the line, maybe hip check his own linemen and a couple
of times, things like that. He gets messy. You know, they're in the weeds and be able to
keep their feet run through those arm tackles, fall forward and really take on those second
level defenders. Make a linebacker, make a safety, make a DB, just kind of be like,
ah, like, you know, maybe do I want to make a business decision here here and there.
Of course, you want a guy who can run with violence, right? Violence is a key word with
the Washington commanders on offense, defense, especially, it doesn't really matter, but
you want a guy that can put their foot in the ground, get north and south, get through
the hole, hit those gaps and do it with conviction performance standards. You're looking for
vision on tape. You're looking for the ability to flow in zone, read, get those pole concepts,
hit the power concepts, do all those things because this team is going to do a little bit
of it all. It's not going to be just zone. It's not going to just be power. It's going
to be a little bit of a lot of things you would love, love to get that Jameer Gibbs,
right? Detroit Lions, Ben Johnson, that's where he made a lot of his money is with that Jameer
Gibbs influence in his offense. You would love to get that Jameer Gibbs for the Washington
commanders if you can. But of course, you've got to have past protection ability. You've got
to be able to protect the quarterback, Jayden Daniels. He's number five in your program.
He's number one in your heart. He's number one. Importance on the team. That's why they
went out there and gave all those draft picks away from Laramie Tunsell. That's why they
went out there and spent that first round pick on Josh Connerley, Jr. And it's why they
need to go get themselves a back that can be on the field every down if possible, but
also be on the field to protect the quarterback in the key moments that they can. They went
out and they signed some free agents that they believe can contribute to that. Rashad White
is a very good pass protector, all those things. But when you look at 2027, the only guy on
the roster is Bill, right? Jacord Cross, he married. He was the only guy on the roster
under 2026 off season. He's the only guy on the roster right now projected for the 2027
off season. Gotta go find some youth. Gotta go find a guy. Whether it's number seven overall
in Jeremiah Love, or it's another guy like Jonah Coleman deep in the draft, you gotta
go find another guy. What are the discriminators? What are the things that kind of turn us off
from a potential Washington commanders running back? Well, part of it being at one trick
pony. Listen, you kind of had that already, right? Chris Rodriguez, Jr. I love the man.
He was a he was considered, I should say. I think he has better ability in the other areas
that he was giving credit for. That's another conversation. But he's billed as kind of
a one trick pony. He runs forward. He runs strong. He runs powerfully, falls forward.
Great. But we need more. Jacord Cross, he married. I mean, he's young. His development right
so it's not get to like harsh on a guy or anything like that. But you heard Cliff Kingsbury
talk multiple times last year about Bill needing to get better as a pass catcher, better
as a pass protector. You know, he's got the one cut, get up the field, run with violence,
hit that hole. He's got the burst all this stuff that you need him to do more. I think
here too, we have a big opportunity to see Bill do more. But until you see it, you can't
necessarily count on it coming. You don't want dancers. You don't want guys that are
in the backfield saying, I do I go left, I do I go right, do I turn around? Do I spin?
Do I jump? You when you guys that have conviction, they run with conviction, make a decision
and get out there. And of course, you don't want any stone hands. You need guys that can
catch the ball, get those soft hands, get there on the jugs machine and get those catches.
So when we do that, if you look at it, Jacord Cross, he married. He's got that plant and
drive violence. But he's an unknown right now in year two as a pass catcher and blocker.
We'll see what he's been working on when we get to OTAs. Really not that long away.
We're not that far away. Next month, the team will be reporting in four days. We'll get
to see them in a couple of weeks, I think three weeks. That's what we're looking at. Jeremy
McNichols is back. He's a pass pro guy. He's got the receiving chops, but he doesn't really
have a lot of value as an early down runner. Rashad White, we kind of talked about good
pass catcher, good blocker. He does dance a little bit in the backfield. He's got to fix
that Jerome Ford, very scheme diverse, very process oriented, very intelligent running
back. But he's kind of a boomer bus type of guy. He's either going to hit a big run or
he's not going to hit much of anything. So you need those elements in the Washington
commanders backfield. If you're going to do this successfully, moving forward, we gave
you our top 10 based on that criteria. Let's break them down coming up next on today's
episode of Lockdown Commanders part of the Lockdown podcast network, your team every day.

Current year need. I think when you process what the team needs currently, 2026, they need that
A gap back, right? You got Bill who's got the burst. You got Rashad White who can pass pro and catch
and you got some other backs. I can do some of those similar things. What they don't have is
that Chris Rodriguez. They don't have that A gap power guide that can fall through the lane,
fall for consistently. You need that guy in 2026. I'm convinced. You also need that third down back.
You have them potentially, but you don't have them for long-term security, so you need to figure
out whether it's in the draft getting a new one with four years of rookie contract under their belt
or figuring out who it is through the course of the season. You got to figure out who that third
down back is. In 2027, you need to figure out who your primary dynamic weapon is going to
be. Potentially, Bill could come through and jump up there, but listen, if you have the opportunity
to draft one that you know can be that dynamic weapon. Again, you need Aubrey off what you know,
not what you hope. You hope Bill can be that guy, but if you know this guy on the board can be that
guy for you, you go get him. If you end up with Bill doing it too, bro, you have two dynamic weapons.
Nobody's ever going to feel bad about themselves for that. You need a well-rounded number two
running back and you need some veteran insurance in 2026. You're not drafting veteran insurance,
so obviously that's off the board for the NFL draft. Helistically, looking at the big picture,
you need a falling forward type of bruiser dynamic weapon, special teams contributor,
and a developmental well-rounded RB3. If you can get one later in the draft or in the UDFA,
undrafted free agent pool after the draft, which I think there's going to be plenty of talent
there as well. So again, our guy on top 10, let's start breaking these guys down, talking about why
they're in the top 10. Starting with, of course, Jeremiah Love, our number one guy on this board,
six foot tall, 212 pounds first round grade. When you talk about traits and need match and all
access members of the everyday club, just like you've been getting my notes for all these other
position groups, you're getting my notes for these, and you're going to see all the details and why
Jeremiah Love is an eight out of 10 traits need match. So you're talking about the needs the team needs,
team needs, right? You're talking about the traits that Jeremiah Love has. He's elite fit. When you
talk about that 2027 dynamic space weapon, which is obviously the biggest need moving forward into
the future, I think that Jeremiah Love clearly does that. He does lack the overall pure agat power,
but he does get a little bit of a bump for having the ability to line up anywhere as a receiver and
that elite pass catching roll. So his fit as a rookie is a receiver perimeter type of back, but his
versatility showcases the potential to be an open space weapon and guy that can line up as a
receiver in the slot, do those types of things and also become a perimeter threat as a running
backing score from anywhere. A combination of four, three, six speed and two hundred and twelve
pound frame. That is a lot of dude running very, very fast. That helps him get between the tackles. Like
you hear about past rushes, right? Speed to power. If you don't have just pure raw power,
you got to use that speed to create power. Well, in the running game, if you have power, it helps
you gain those extra yards, or it helps you clear the gap, or it helps you clear the lane.
And if you don't have that power per se, that kind of Chris Rodriguez, Derek Henry,
David Montgomery type of power, hitting that hole faster before it can close. That's how you
replace those hidden yards with your own hidden yards, four, three, six, two hundred and twelve pounds.
You talk about like force and function and the equation for, you know, what is mass times speed
and all this other, you know, science that I need in front of me to really talk about accurately,
because I'm butchering that. But you talk about two hundred and twelve pounds. If it's coming through
the hole at a four, three, six, I don't have his ten yard split here would be a lot faster than that.
But if you have that type of frame coming through that hole, it creates power, right? So you
don't necessarily have that power out of that, but it creates that power. Again, he's a natural
receiver, patient runner, who likes to set up his blocks, good pass protector, high level, high
level ball security. I mean, that's something that's incredibly important because with Bill,
I think if the season is going well for the wash commanders last year, then this probably just
talked about more, but his fumbling issues during the season. That fumble was against Chicago
Bears was on Jay not on the jacory, but you have some fumble situations with jacory. And again,
like I said, the season was going better. Probably just talked about a little bit more. Not that I'm like,
oh, we should have, we should have really hammered Bill for his ball security. No, I'm not saying
that at all, but it is something you have to acknowledge. Ball security was a little bit of a
concern last year. We'll see what it looks like this year again in year two, but for Jeremiah Love,
one fumble in five hundred and four career touches. You love that ball security. However,
ball security is also going to be one of his detractors, not because he's loses the ball.
I mean, you remember that playoff game in Philadelphia Eagles when Deami Brown catches the ball,
he's running up the field. I don't know about you, but I know you probably know what plan I'm talking
about. Well, I don't know about you, but when he's running the ball, I'm sitting in the press box
there at Lincoln Financial Field going, talk the ball away, talk the ball away, talk the ball away,
didn't do it. It got punched out and it up being a fumble. Pretty big moment in that game,
Jeremiah Love, while he doesn't have the fumbles on his resume, he also does not carry the ball tight
to his frame. He carries it away from his frame. He's got some focus drops in the past in the game.
He got to get better with that ball because in the NFL, you're not going to get away with it as much
as you did at Notre Dame. He also leaves his feet too much, leads to a little bit of dancing,
but he tries to hurtle too much thing in the NFL. Brother, I think you got to chill with that kind
of stuff because that's going to hurt you at the year and you can end up getting you hurts
in the national football league. Did have a knee injury in late 2024. Again, it's a couple of
years removed now. So just something to be aware of that I'm sure the teams are more than aware of
and have already gotten their answers on that kind of stuff. Looking at his team,
Major Darian Price, I have Notre Dame 511, 203, our second running back on our board. He's a second
or third round. So midday two type of projection. He's about a six out of a 10 traits and need match.
So he's got the power. He's out burst limited past catching versatility, at least shown in
Notre Dame. And listen, with these college guys, there's always the possibility that just because
he didn't do it in college, doesn't mean he can't do it. These programs kind of know what they
want to ask out of guys. And that's what they want to get. And he does have a tendency to dance
in the backfields. That early down power, which you love, the long term versatility looks like
he's got some kick returner ability, a little bit of a good accelerator in space, which kind of
like kind of shows that ability may be more dynamic with some opportunities to be so, but also some
coaching from guys like Anthony Lynn on the Washington commander staff really just looks natural
navigating through lanes. He finishes runs the way you want him to does have reliable hands out of
the backfield tracks the ball well. So you can expand his role as a receiver again, one of those
things where it's just because he wasn't asked to do it necessarily. A lot doesn't mean he
doesn't do it. I can't do it now with his ball security. He has three fumbles on just 113 carries
in 2025 alone. All three of those happen in the 10 yard line yet hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. That's
so also some vision ways moving east to west. Certainly we moving left and right laterally,
those types of things certainly could be improved. Mike Washington Jr. At Arkansas,
one of my favorite dudes, he is another eight out of 10 fit traits fit. So that's kind of what
you're looking like. He's the third round pick. So if you're the Washington commanders and let's say
there's a trade involved and you end up with a late second or an earlier, earlier third round,
pick the number 71 overall, and you've got Giderian price sitting there and you've got Mike
Washington sitting there like Giderian price is the overall top talent, right? But Mike Washington
Jr. fits more traits 6123 pounds high end matchup 2026 early down a power type of back, but he's
also got versatility as a screen catcher. He's got pass protection experience. It does need some
cleaning up. So that's a more of a versatility future type of thing, but he does have that again,
rare speed and size. You don't get Giderian, my love running that 43212 pounds. You can get
Mike Washington Jr. running a 43223 pounds on day two, right? Patient runner again likes to set
up his blocks shows a good catch radius, but he does have again ball security, which is one of the
reasons he is a day two guy. Let's move now to our number six overall running back real quick,
but our only 10 out of 10. This guy fits every traits, every need that the Washington
commanders have. So why is he a fourth, fifth round early day three prospect? Well, for one,
he's undersized. Jonah Coleman, 52820 pounds. You like the 220, 220 pounds, 528. That's a small frame
for that much meat. Early down power runs violently. Plants and drives gets north and south,
and he has 87 career catches out of the backfield as well. And he's a proven pass protector. So
you have that true three down ability, 52928. Like I said, that's that's one heck of a lopsided
type of measurement, but he's going to pick up all those blitzies. He's going to do those things
for you. Does not have break away speed, which is again, where the measurements come down. But if
you want a guy who can be effective, no matter when he's on the field, he is one of those guys. Where
are you going to get these guys in the draft? Where is the value from this class? We'll talk about
that coming up next on today's episode of Lockdown Commanders, part of the Lockdown podcast

Eli Hydernike Hyden-Rike. I don't know why I keep throwing that extra R in there. Who we talked
about a little bit Kalen Black at Indiana, Jamari Taylor, Virginia, Noah Wittington out of Oregon
and Roman Hempi out of Indiana. Again, one of my favorite dudes. So all these guys are going to be
available. There's even more guys available. I mean, Chip Trainham out of Toledo is the seventh round
undrafted free agent potential guy who's got a good amount of fit. Jaden Ott out of Oklahoma is
another one. Adam Randall out of Clemson is another one. C.J. Donaldson, we talked about him. He might
be the best value because honestly, you're probably going to get him as an undrafted free agent
if you're the Washington commanders. Eight out of 10 fit. He fits a lot of these blocks. Massive A
gap power type of guy. So you give you that immediate need. Zero drops over the last two years.
Does have a wide receiver background six to two hundred and thirty six pounds. So he's got three
down traits for the watchmakers to work for again. UDFA. So he's got he's going to be a project.
He's going to need home run or home run. He's going to need homework. He's in these homegrown
development things like that. But he is going to be there probably as a primary or a priority for
the agent. I should say in the NFL draft. Dean Conner's out of Houston is another one. Cache Jones
out of Georgia. Barika can be Pino. Sorry. North Dakota State Robert Henry Jr. UTSA
is another one as well. So a lot of good town. That's 19 names. I just gave you overall.
A lot of good town at the running back position. Now where are these guys going to be drafted?
Where is the value? So between the number seven and number 71 overall picks. You're looking at
Jeremiah Love, Jadarian Price, Mike Washington Jr. All coming off the board. Now at the number 71 overall
pick, you're looking at guys like Jonah Coleman who we talked about being a 10 out of 10 traits fit.
Emmett Johnson, Kate Tron Allen coming off the board as well. 147 between that and 187. You're
looking at Kaelin Black coming off the board. Kaelin Black project to come off the board of 186.
So in theory, if you're the Washington commanders and you don't have a back yet, you haven't gone
there yet. 187 Kaelin Black could potentially be sitting there. He would be a plus one value. You
would get him a pick later than he's supposed to go. Jamari Taylor is supposed to go between 187 and
209 Eli Heidenreich between 209 to 23 and then available to 23 Roman, Henry Noah Winnington as
well. Jeremiah Love Eli Heidenreich, Jamari Taylor, come away as our top three value picks in the
Washington mayors mock drafts or running back mock draft big board. Who do we leave off?
Three guys we left off Nicholas Singleton at a Penn State. He's a fifth round projected pick.
Why did we leave him off the board? Not known as a great processor, not known as great vision.
He's got a great athletic profile, right? So I'll tell you if you're the Washington commanders and from
your in-depth conversations with him because that's what you get as a team. We certainly don't get
that I certainly don't get. If you talk to this guy, you talk to his coaches, you do all this stuff,
you're like, man, we can really work that athletic profile. I would not fault the team for falling in
love with that athletic profile because it is amazing. But again, he's a fifth round projected pick for
a reason. Doesn't run with a lot of patience. Can't really pass protect. So again, you have to
believe that you can get all that stuff out of him that he hasn't really shown yet in his career
at Penn State. Demon Cleeborn at a Wake Forest, a fourth, fifth round pick, dances around the backfield
too much. Doesn't pass protect. Simply took him off the list. Jam Miller out of Alabama, a late
round pick, unproven pass catcher, unproven pass protector, five drops on 37 career targets,
took him off the list for us. So that is our running back big board here on locked on commanders.
