Yeah, I find this very interesting, you know, obviously a good point to once a return to his goal of gloveways
Because if he returns to that way as a fielder and his hitting stays where it was last year
No guarantee, but if it does he becomes a top tier player on baseball and well worth the 22 million
You are locked on Yankees your daily New York Yankees podcast part of the locked on podcast network your team every day
Welcome to locked on Yankees, which is part of the locked on podcast network now the number one sports podcast network in the country
I'm Stacy Gansulius alongside my co-host Brian and Kean and we'd like to thank you for making locked on Yankees your first listen every day
Brian as we're recording this I believe
Australia and Chinese Taipei will be playing in the WBC the first game to be played
Yeah, first pitch is I mean, full disclosure. We're recording this at 10 p.m. And first pitch goes on right now
Which is pretty damn awesome at the same time judges home run ball just landed in the exhibition
Yeah, we're gonna talk about that in segment three
First this episode is brought to you by MLB the show 26 visit MLB the dot show slash locked on and use code a locked on to unlike a pack for use in
Diamond dynasty pre-order now available March 17th on playstation five xbox and Nintendo switch and it's rated E for everyone
So the run down. Let's go through it
Segment three we're gonna talk about news from around the league the reds are holding their breath
For news about one of their starters. We'll talk about that and what happened with the exhibition WBC games because
Speaking of the reds they put a beat down on someone so we're gonna talk about that
In segment two we're gonna talk about Spencer Jones tweaking his swing
We had mentioned this last week, but he actually spoke out about it. So we're going to tell you what he said
But first actually there's a first and there's a one a and a one b so
One quick correction on Wednesday's episode cade win quest was a minor league rule five pick
So if he doesn't make the roster
He has to be offered back to st. Louis so he didn't make his way through the Yankee system
He was with st. Louis before he came to the Yankees. So that might actually
Be a reason why he makes the roster because the Yankees have been looking at this guy since 2022
And they made like they hadn't made a pick like that in 14 years and they specifically went after this guy
So I think what would have to happen here is he'd have to make the roster and then be signed to a major league deal with the Yankees
So
It kind of does seem like unless he completely falters into your point the fact that they went after him and made this rule five pick
They're not gonna just let him like they're gonna have to see this through yeah, so I agree with you
We we you know both disclosure raise the hand we drop the ball or I drop the ball on that one
So he's going to make the roster it looks like there's like no way he won't
So we'll see what winds up happening if it's if LaGronne is impressive enough to get over Jake Bird
I mean that would be damn impressive, but it does seem like at this point
Why would you just give him back to say Lewis for nothing? Right
All right, so real segment one. Let's talk about Trent Grisham
Working on his defense because we had spoken about this in
2025 he had an all-time offensive season for Trent Grisham, which is why he got the 22 million dollar
qualifying offer
He wants to return to his gold gloveways because he knows that he didn't do as well last season
There are reasons and we're going to talk about them
Yeah, and I find that's very interesting
You know obviously a good point to once a return to his gold gloveways because if he returns to that way as a fielder
And his hitting stays where it was last year no guarantee, but if it does he becomes a top tier player in baseball and well worth the 22 million
Um, it's just about returning to that form and I do want to highlight this first before we get into it Stacy
When they acquired him from San Diego, remember he was in the Juan Soto trade and he was kind of a throw it in that trade
And they really wanted him as a bench piece who can come in late in games and field in center field
So it is kind of convoluted where
They didn't acquire him for the the power numbers that he put up in 2025
That wasn't even a part of the conversation. It was about he's going to give you great defensive ability in center field
Comes in late in games you can move judge back over to right field
That was the whole point in that
So it is kind of interesting when I look at what winds up happening now is the fielding is the negative part of Grisham's game and the hitting is deposited
That seems very just kind of freaky fraudeish
Yeah, so let's go through some of the numbers. These were his offensive numbers in 2025
So he set a career high and runs 87 hits 116 home runs 34 runs batted in 74 his slugging percentage
Uh was 464 his OPS plus was 125 which is really good
But the two-time goal glove award winner he won them in 2020 and 2022
Took that step back defensively
He posted a minus three fielding run value minus two
Out's above average and it's the first time that he ever finished
Negative in both of those categories in 20 and that's the that's the step that they really look at when it comes to fielding
Nowadays it's out to above average. It's it's basically a
A war for your fielding if you want to say how good how good you are based on the rest of everyone and how much better that you are than the average player and
For him to be in the negative is very unlike what he's been throughout his entire career
And if you guys remember back to 2024 his fielding is elite
So it's kind of weird that step back that he did take in a singular year without getting much older or coming necessarily through some deteriorating injury
Well, here's another number from 2019 to 2024 he ranked fourth
Among major league baseball centerfielders with a 16 OAA so to finish negative
When you're averaging 16 and you're the fourth best centerfielder in those seasons
That's a big step back. Yeah, that's significant and and it makes you wonder
What is it and you can't credit it to some mystery injury that was going on last year because his offense was better than it's ever been throughout his entire career
So there wasn't anything wrong with his game or making him a worse fielder. It kind of just makes you wonder what made him
You know decline that much. Well, it is funny. You say that because
It said he posted the worst jumps of his career on average in 2025
And this is what the article said which could be traced in part to his hamstring issue that he had
Because he recalled an incident in last June in Toronto
He caught a cleat in the
In the floor at a Roger Center and that seemed to affect him
He went he ended up playing through everything
But from some of the quotes in this article that I read both him and boon acknowledged that that could have been a reason why he took a step back because he was
The hamstring at least in that aspect of his game was hindering
How he took roots to balls and because you did see there was talk about how slow he was getting to balls last year
And it seemed to have picked up in the second half of the season. So that kind of lines up with
Him catching his cleat, but he never missed
Major time with it
But I'm kind of sick and tired of these guys playing through these things to the detriment of their defense or offense depending on who they are
Well, here's the thing. So they're saying it's a hamstring injury first of all
I don't want to say because they say he acquired it in Toronto in this story
Toronto's one of the only stadiums still and shame on them after going through this like trillion dollar renovation of the Roger Center
Why would you not put real grass in this stadium like this was the time to do it replace the field the fact that there's still turf in the outfield is
But like monkey balls to me like I don't even understand what's going on. Why would you do that makes absolutely no sense
Here's the thing and we've talked about this a lot hamstring injuries are terrifying and they're kind of like the calf injury in the same type of soft tissue injury where
Players are always kind of running around with their head with their head over their shoulder
The wondering when they're going to pull it again and every time they run
There's that little bit of caution that's left in their brain of you don't want to push it too hard
Because what if you feel a tweak in that hamstring? What if you feel a tweak in that calf
Goes kind of injuries never really go away and then it feels those things take
A year or so for the season to end for guys to really have their confidence back in pushing themselves
And if this was really affecting him all year
That could lead to a lot of this, but I agree with you Stacey
Why would you if you're trying Christian?
I understand you want to be out there and you don't want to lose your position
All those things make sense but dude for the betterment of the team sit out for a month
Let your hamstring heal and then come back a better and more and full player because when you're playing at at 70% in the field
What good does that do you?
Yeah, so Boone said
Sometimes if there's a handful of plays that don't get made in the gap that's going to ding you pretty hard
In the middle of the season we had a handful of balls that he normally gets to
And it moved the needle on the metrics then he added to his credit
He was still playing well through that but nursing that for a period of time
I expect him to be really good out there and hopefully the metrics support that he's back in line
With who he's been his entire career
Yeah, typical Boone comment there that he expects Christian to be one of the greatest center filters of all time next year
Because why wouldn't he be but here's the thing
Well, I mean we just mentioned that he was one of the better ones for the last
16 year right for 2025 so here's the reason that he would if he's healthy and the hamstring is fine
It doesn't do anything to it that he should be back to
Trinkrisham levels of defense and here's the thing that that could bother you more about quotes like that where he explains
There's balls in the gap that could have led to them winning games and stuff. We remember last year
At they literally finished tied with the blue jays and and the blue just one of the tiebreaker
Those I mean the Yankees could have won one extra game
We've talked about it a lot with you know certain pitching performances. We've talked about it
You know certainly citing Devon millions one of those saves doesn't get blown
And the Yankees have one more win last year and they win the division and then who knows how the postseason plays out
Because you're not playing in the wild card game. We're just with the red socks
Beat the blue jays in the wild card round and then you know, it's all different
You don't know how those things are going to play out
So it could have been a difference of one win last year
And that's the thing we talk about
Grisham keeps himself out for a month and heals that hamstring stacey
Maybe the guy that's replacing him in center field whoever it may have been
Would have gotten to one of those balls and it results in a Yankee win
And the Yankees win 95 games last year and win the division
You don't know and baseball's a long season. It's 162. I fully get it
It comes down to these little moments sometimes these little you know spurts of availability
That want to help in your team out and I know as the player
You think that you're doing your best by trying to be out there every single day
But sometimes like you said, it's at a detriment to your team by by trying to be such a competitor and out there every day
No one's saying that Grisham's pushing and not pushing into playoff game absolutely push it and stay out there
but
Game 90 in July first you don't need to be out there
You know and and these are the kind of things that you know it can come back to bite you later on in the year
And it seems like it may have last year
Right, right, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do
You know, I saw him get to that one ball
We made that diving play the other day and that kind of instill a little confidence in him too
Because he's like all right, I could still do this so I'm hoping that
Things continue to be good for him defensively and we don't need Trent Grisham to hit 34 home runs
It would be nice, you know, I don't expect him to but if he hits like between 25 and 30 like hits like 27 home runs
But has elite defense. I would take that. I have a question for you before we close out here
Yeah, if you were a betting woman
What would you
Bet your money on crank question's offensive numbers are less productive or more productive than last year less
And that's the point focus on your fielding dude like they're going to score runs no matter what focus on your fielding
Yeah
Coming up Spencer Jones talked about his revised swing and we're going to tell you what he said next

Some morning coffee with stacy while you
Figure out what happened in last night's Yankee loss or win. Hope for this lot more wins than lost
Hopefully there's more wins than losses in 2020. Thanks. Yeah, that'd be great
We'll see if uh Spencer Jones has anything to do with some of those wins or losses going into the Yankee season this year
Um something interesting
He moved his swing and tweak to swing a little bit to uh make it look a lot more like show hey otani's and have to go through the zone a lot more like show
Hey otani's why don't you tell us about this days
Yeah, so
I got the original article from Yahoo
Like throw all the article from Yahoo, but the original article is from the athletic it was written by Brendan Cuddy
Brendan Cuddy spoke with Spencer Jones about this change because as we mentioned
In a previous episode the talk of baseball was the fact that David Cone was the first person to point it out during a yes
broadcast that Spencer Jones's at
batting stance and swing looked a lot more like show hey otani than it ever has and it turns out that Jones's
Purposely doing that because there's similar in body type otani six four
He's six seven, but they bat from the same side of the plate and he's trying to make it so his swing is not so long through the zone because he
It's funny when you look at our judge
He's just as big as Spencer Jones, but bigger like he's built bigger than Spencer Jones
But he can shorten his swing. He's not you know what I mean like it's just different when you look at the two of them
And I think Spencer Jones is realizing that he needs to fix that because
What's his big problem in the
Strike that right, but guess who also had that problem when he was in the minors
Oh, yeah, especially when he got when Aaron judge got to the majors remember that that first
2016 season where he was there for the last month of the year the power numbers weren't there and he was striking out a ton
So that was an issue um it actually is ridiculously impressive for how big of a dude show hey otani is how quick he gets through his own because
He does have that uh that prototypical Japanese stance where a lot of these guys that come over from the Japanese league kind of have the bat
A little further away from their body kind of more into the strike zone and he compacts that swing and gets it through the zone
So quick if you look watch otani swing
From where he starts off the bat out front and front at him to getting it in and being able to make contact anywhere in the zone
It's in the bat speed is incredible on that guy and obviously one of the all-time great players
So his bat speed would be incredible, but not a terrible guy to emulate your swing after right and I think
If Jones can get something from judge when it comes to you know cutting down on the strike hour
Because you saw what what kind of player return judge into because
The 2017 year where he should have won the American League uh rookie of the uh should have won the American League MVP over a hose out to bay
In his rookie year
One of the hidden things in that season judge struck out a ton in that season
I mean it was like 250 right something
Yeah he was like that ton of strike down start the entire year and
He has dramatically cut down on that almost to like
It's again one of the least talked about things when it comes to judge's career because of all the other amazing things that he's done throughout his entire career
But the fact that a player like that who was so strike out prone and then got into the majors and put up power numbers
But also struck out a ton
They said the fact that he's completely fixed the strikeouts in his game is is is is remarkable say the least it's incredible
And it's not only that
We're in an era where
People were clamoring for Cal Raleigh to win MVP over judge when he only batted like 240 when judge batted over
300 in an environment where people don't usually hit over 300
Plus he's hitting over 50 home runs a year while hitting over 300
It's unbelievable what he's done. So I want Spencer Jones
To look at Aaron judge and continue to look at Shohei Otani too because they're one and two in the top 100
MLB list what he said about Otani was the best guy with the toe down swing is Otani
So it was just kind of looking at some of the moves that he does lined up with some of the things that I'm trying to do because people noticed
The toe move immediately like I said David Cohn clocked it other fans have clocked it and let's not compare Spencer Jones to Otani
Because people were doing that he's just trying to emulate him because there's similar body types
And he wants to be a good hitter in Major League Baseball. So who better to emulate from that side of the plate
Then one of the best hitters from that side of the plate and applause to him for actually trying to address the major problem
That he has in his swing and not just trying to you know bash forward
I'll give you this last point on judge to
If after judge's rookie year
He continues to put up the exact same numbers that he's put up the right as career a 50 home run pace every single year over 100 RBI's
But still struck out 220 times a year the Yankees would have signed for that
They want those power numbers you signed for those
And judge completely think he's a perfect hitter Aaron judge
He's on base history he walks a ton his on his OPS is amazing his batting averages high
He has contrendous power that there's no holes in his hitting game right now like I'm really struck by how
Well of a hitter he's become like he is just so good at the plate, you know, he's basically
Becoming he's like Mickey Mantle, but also Luis arise with the with the batting average
It's unbelievable. It's actually remarkable and the only thing he doesn't really have which is weirdly enough that he said he was going to work on this
All season is the base stealing which again no one's asking him to do that. No, but that's really it
And you know what's funny is the base running is an elite level too like he runs the bases really well
He just doesn't steal bases. It is remarkable
I feel like he doesn't get the love that he deserves sometimes just for like we don't realize that
This is an all-time power hitter who hits for average
Yeah, like it's it's not a thing in baseball history. It really is just remarkable really is some more some more on Jones
He displayed obviously impressive power in the minors between
AA and triple A in 2025 he hit 35 home runs. He slugged 571. He also
struck out a lot. He had 150 plus strikeouts in three straight seasons
And obviously opposing pitching will not get easier for him if he becomes a full-time major leagueer, but like we said
He has judge
To watch like he's at his disposal because the downside of being taller is it takes you longer to get through the zone
But you see Aaron judge sometimes he does he takes those long swings when he's you know when he thinks the pitch is slower than it is he's yeah
But for all those they see he judge also had the element work
I mean the home run and let and in two years ago to play offs
The moment that he had last year's postseason the home run the one that he hit earlier on in spring train this year
Oh, yeah, turning on the inside he gets to the inside pitch really quickly, too
So that he can make that swing compact if he needs to also yeah
Yeah, so I just really want Spencer Jones like you know, I'm liking that he's
Doing this like he's working on changing things and obviously trying to make things better for himself because he wants to make the majors
He wants to be a contributor and
Again emulating the top two players
In baseball
Not a bad idea. Yeah
All right coming up news from around the league including news that the reds probably did not want to hear
So we're going to talk about that next

So first off wbc will circle back to the wbc in a second
Nolan McLean is going to be delayed in the wbc
He will still pitch. He's still on team USA
But he's gonna be delayed due to vertigo
Uh, that sounds awful. Have you ever had vertigo? I have vertigo. It's not fun. Yeah, it doesn't sound it could you pitch on vertigo
No, no
If it's really affecting you you can barely walk when vertigo is it's basically
How do I describe it? It feels like someone is pushing your head into your pillow if you turn your head a certain way
And if you try to walk you veer to whatever side is affected by the vertigo
I had vertigo from my 40th birthday and I couldn't go anywhere
I was walking around the house with a neck brace on to keep my head steady
And I I was on adivan to try and stop the vertigo from happening
Some 40 some of the fewer 90
No, well vertigo is a thing that happens. It's crystals in your ear and they get out of whack
I first started exhibiting vertigo symptoms when I was in my early 30s something happened
So um, it's not an old person thing it could happen to anyone
No, I mean we're walking around with a neck brace and feeling for the wall
I wasn't even walking. I just sat in a chair all day. It was it was such a great 40th birthday. Let me tell you
But I do not
Recommend vertigo to anyone. It is a horrible feeling
You know, I actually I can only imagine how awful he was feeling
But no, if you're on a pitchers mound and you're throwing he would
Throw the ball and then like fall off to whichever side is being affected by the vertigo
It would not see some of his uh his pitches may make the batters feel like they have vertigo at the movement that he has
But I don't think it would feel great to be on the mound having it
From what I did read it does seem like it's a pretty uh easy cure with what you know the doctors
They have on staff wbc and that kind of stuff. So he is gonna be fine to pitch what they but they do is
You could do it on your own
You hang your head off the edge of a table like an examining table or a bed if you're in your house
And you put your head at a 45 degree angle and you just let the vertigo take over
You feel like you're gonna puke
But you have to last through it for like 20 seconds and then you fix your head
And you do it a few times and then the crystals will move to where they're supposed to be and the vertigo will be okay
That sounds horrendous. I don't want that. It's horrendous. I don't recommend it to anyone
Yeah, something the reds wouldn't recommend either is uh the injury that hunter green has
Hunter green has a stiff elbow and is getting an MRI on friday uh
That's as bad of news as you could possibly get for their best pitcher
But a stiff elbow sounds horrendous and when you hear going for an MRI
Yeah, you kind of you kind of clinch your teeth there, right? Yeah, although I feel like
I
Feel like it's worse when they say forearm as opposed to elbow, right?
This is another one that really kind of scares you. Yeah, like this could be he could maybe he slept wrong
Maybe he had like maybe he sleeps like me with the dinosaur arms and he just did something wrong with his elbow and he didn't know
You know, you never know
But hopefully everything will turn out okay for him because that would be a big blow
I do feel like when it's serious enough to send you for an MRI though that kind of is
Yeah, yeah
Years go up a little bit. That's when it becomes a little more scary. So why friday
Oh, cuz you wait usually if
If it was like a swelling issue usually we for the swelling to go down to take a full MRI to get a clear picture
So at which again not a good sign if they're swelling there and the discomfort not a good sign
I'm hoping for the best because I want to see the best players play so right exactly not great news for the reds or hunter green
I hope it's I hope it's nothing
Hopefully you can have one of those the garracole in 2024
Where the elbow injuries there and he gets to come back in june or so. We'll see not not too short. We're going to have happening there um
USA played uh
The Rockies in their exhibition game on Wednesday startle kind of slow although Aaron judging a bowl to to to Mars in the first inning
53 feet and
Watch the highlight and look at the Rockies spring training episode
They got that kind of that degress patch
I kind of looks like the Astros old center field talent in the outfield. Yeah
Judge hit it 98% of the way up that entire hill. It's it's remarkable um
Yeah, the ball just looked like it never was gonna land. It was 116 miles an hour off the bat
I mean just obliterated this baseball and
If you're one of those people who
Loves the the springtime being in the air and baseball returning and you know that baseball's back
Hearing the crack of the bat and hearing that the snap of the ball in the glove
Go watch this highlight with the sound fully off because you will hear a crack of the bat. That's legendary with how loud the crack of the bat was on this so
Absolutely obliterated ball, but team USA took a while to get going in this game's days
They were down four three after four innings the Rockies kind of locked in
And then they they were up first then they were down because Clayton Karshaw gave up two runs
And uh, you know people were like oh because people were joking
They were like oh, this is definitely a reverse lock the like before the game even started
They're like oh, this is a reverse lock team USA is probably gonna lose to the Rockies of all people
And you know when the Rockies went up four three people were like whoa
What's gonna happen here and then yeah? Yeah, Kurt
I will tell you the Karshaw thing like he's not gonna pitch big innings for them his foot tap out the door of retirement
Like he's he's in Cancun pretty much so he's not uh, he's not you know taking this ass
See if you guys are um, yeah, well, that's a problem because these other guys are taking it seriously every series like
But USA winds up winning the game 14 to four that didn't even play the full game
They ended it in the eighth inning uh and the USA bar and they borrowed Rockies pictures
So it is ridiculous what they want. I'm doing and turning it on uh
Then Friday is the first game of the WBC where the USA will play Brazil um and
It is expected it could be one of the more lopsided games in like
X in like sports history
We'll consider there's foreign already against major majors. I know they're not playing the entire game
But the first parts of those caves they're playing against major leagueers. So
Yeah, it could be better speaking of speaking of lopsided. So the red speed up on team Cuba 19 to two
Which also had to end in the eighth inning because why which is seen because Cuba's actually supposed to be decent
Yeah, so how did this happen?
I aren't supposed to be getting yourself pumped up for this whole tournament like that is insane to me
Yeah, I
I don't I don't know
What happened there and I thought that maybe I was misreading the score and then my brother pointed it out on MLB
Networks ticker and he says does that say 19 to the red speed Cuba 19 to
So yeah, what you weren't also in the Yankee the spring training game uh earlier yesterday as well
Luis heel and three innings six strikeouts in those three innings and nowhere and runs. He was looked really good
Jake bird when I ending in a third one strikeout, but it also got nothing
um
uh no one bar junior hit a lead off home run against Garrett crochet
Then rice had two big hits including a home run Yankee's won that game for nothing. And yes, I know
it's exhibition, but
Garrett crochet a 97-mile-an-hour fastball from Garrett crochet
And george lumbar juniors of one two pitch turned on it and hit it 392 feet
Yeah, and a key there too to turn on it like he he got ahead of that ball, which is really impressive
crochet one two and two thirds three hits three earned
Was not good in this game so uh Yankee's won the game for nothing. They are not in two in spring. It's pretty cool
Um, they're playing really well there, but yeah, they uh this team USA thing is going to be a lot of fun
It's going to be a lot of fun to watch tacy
