Jay Zawaski and Mario Tirabassi react to the Chicago Blackhawks trading Jason Dickinson and Colton Dach to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a conditional first-round pick and Andrew Mangiapane. The guys break down what this return says about Kyle Davidson’s plan and how Mangiapane fits into the Hawks’ lineup moving forward. What does the conditional first mean for Chicago’s future draft capital? And with the NHL trade deadline approaching, could this signal that more moves are still coming?

Welcome into the CHGO Blackhawks emergency podcast presented by Xfinity.
Jason Dickinson and Colton Doc are the newest Edmonton Oilers, Andrew Mangiapani, and
a 2027 first round pick that is top 12 protected, we have their protection, we have the conditions,
we don't have to wait a year to get them.
That's what they are.
Thanks for being with us.
Hit that like button for us, make sure you subscribe to our YouTube page on this, our
fourth birthday at CHGO.
It's only fitting that we have an emergency pod.
That is what we do.
Yeah, I was looking forward to, you know, coming home and having some dinner and just relaxing
and then I'd pull up in the driveway, I checked my phone and I literally put it in
park, looked at my phone and you had texted us the Elliot Friedman tweet and I said, of
course, but you know what, hey, you know what, that's fine.
I kind of felt like it was coming anyways today, especially since last night they canceled
practice and everything, like it kind of just felt like if this was a, if there was
going to be a move today would be a good day to do it, no practice, going up way to the
deadline, they get it done and you know, this, look, it's kind of odd.
Two trades with the same team could have just been one big giant trade, but it feels
like a good bit of business for both teams and we can break it down right now.
100% and look, you got a first round pick and let's talk about the Mongeo Pony part
of this thing and this is a guy who just went through waivers for the oilers, him and
black hawks legend, Alec Wurgula, both went through and cleared.
So I think like familiar names in this, yeah, two teams crazy.
So don't, one way or another, don't get crazy worried about the Andrew Mongeo Pony thing.
I know that he is signed through next year, but like I said, he's already been through
waivers. If they want to send him to Rockford, they can't.
I think he's going to play.
I think you're going to give him a look.
It's a guy who has had some success before it, a 35 goal season with Calgary a couple
of years ago and then goes to Washington in the oilers.
Yeah, and his ice time dips a lot and so does his production.
So I think don't give him a look to see what he can do.
But I think one Sasha Bovara is here and once Anton Frandell is here this year, we,
that might be the entire Andrew Mongeo Pony experiment.
I will see.
I think they'll give him a chance.
But don't sweat the money.
Don't sweat the roster spot.
If they need to make room for somebody, they can find a place for Andrew Mongeo Pony and
it's not going to prevent any hawk you like or care about from being a black hawk this
season or next.
Yeah, I feel like so he's still got one more year left on his current contract at $3.6
million.
That's, uh, Mongeo Pony.
And if they keep them around, that is a guy that is a warm body in the NHL, uh, that
also is on your books and helps you at the floor.
If you buy them out and you just say we want the roster spot, we were talking about it
before the, uh, before the show started, uh, it would be a 2.9 and change million dollar
hit next season and then an extra $333,000 and $333 on the, and 33 cents, and 33 cents
on, uh, on the 27 28 books.
So even if you buy them out, he's still on your books next season for more than, uh, you
know, what's your retaining on Dickinson or Murphy individually.
So, um, yeah, I mean, I, I, I don't hate the idea of giving him an opportunity if they
want to.
Why not?
Um, I also like if, if you send them down and he goes to Rockford and he actually reports
there, which is another part of it, um, that helps the ice hogs because all the guys that
they've banked on helping them this year are in the NHL basically aside from Nick Lardis.
And you know, if, if he plays like, give him an opportunity, he's a, he's a fast guy.
Um, you know, he's like you mentioned before, he's had a 30 goal season before, even though
it was four years ago, um, he's a guy that, you know, his experience can play in the NHL.
If they play him fine, if they don't, it's, it's, it doesn't really affect much, uh,
from this group.
Um, I, I think this is a really good deal.
I think this is a good deal.
It's, it's similar to the Murphy deal, like Edmonton needed a specific type of player.
They needed a depth defensive third line center and they got it.
They needed a depth defenseman that can play second or third pair and they got it.
Like, what have we talked about with the oilers specifically and their deficiencies in the
playoffs?
Defensive?
Yeah.
They still like, like, they still need to kind of work on that, who knows if they're going
to work on the goal, tending north, they're just going to say, Jerry's our guy, we're going
to write it out, but we got better defensively as a team with Dickinson and Murphy.
Like that could be what they, what, where they go, um, but it's always been, that's always
been part of it is the defensive side of things, adding Murphy, adding Dickinson helps
your team defense.
Um, and for the black ox, you open up now three roster spots because Colton doc was a guy
on your NHL roster in and out of the lineup, couldn't really find a consistent home, but
Murphy's out Dickinson's out, um, you know, now you have a third line center spot that
is that where Ryan Green goes, is that where Oliver Morgos, a lot of people have been complaining
that he's the fourth line center, but they really like him at center.
Do they move him up to the third line?
I would do that.
Yeah.
And, you know, we've had the conversation with Murphy gone about the defensive rotation
and all that Kortzinski, Del Mastro, you know, Rinzel's getting more minutes now.
So, um, very interesting to see like the guys, uh, that are still around what it's going
to look like tomorrow in practice, uh, what it's going to look like Friday.
Once the deadline completely passes, but I think this is a really good deal.
And you add that first round pick, you add a future second round pick, like those are,
those are quality draft capital to have to either actually use on young players or to
trade by either getting another player or improving draft, you know, your draft position
by, we've seen Kyle Davis and trade second round picks to get back into first round and
so on and so forth.
Here's what I, uh, as we were kind of speculating who the other piece would be to go.
That was what we were waiting on, um, in the Mark Spector from sports that said, the
reason this hasn't been announced yet is because the person, the other player involved, which
turned out to be Colton Doc, had not been informed yet.
So they had to get all of the him and tell him he's been traded.
So here's what I was tinkering with, uh, top line you keep as it is for now.
Uh, well, I wouldn't, but I think Jeff Flash will, but dark green and Berkowski second
line from last night was Nazar Donato Taravinen, that line looked good to table scored.
Nazar had his best game in a while.
So I keep that together.
More Bertuzzi and McKayev.
If McKayev is still here, I like that as a third line.
And then you put Felino between slaggert and Mangia Pony and see how that goes.
And if Magia Pony shows you a little more offense than you expected, maybe you can, maybe
you can figure out maybe you flip him and Ryan Green and give Ryan Green some center
time.
Or you put more on this op line.
There's options here.
There's options here, but it's, it's a lot cleaner right now.
And you can definitely see the path forward.
If you're adding Bavaria has been pope reported today and you're adding Anton Frontel by the
middle of this month, end of this month, um, they're in for Magia Pony and they're in
for slaggert.
And maybe they trade Felino, maybe they trade McKayev.
We don't know yet, but they slot in very easily right there.
So you've got people to fill the spots for now.
Remember Sam Lafferty is still on the roster too, still at the NHL team.
So there's your 13 forwards with Magia Pony.
And then you add those two whenever they're available and you, maybe you send slaggert
down.
Maybe you wave Lafferty or something.
They've got a lot of options here.
This team is about to get young and as, as Josh points up, Nick Lardis too, Nick Lardis
will need a spot soon as well.
So I wonder if they just do the Magia Pony thing right away.
That remains to be seen to create a spot for, for Nick Lardis.
There's a lot of possibilities here.
It's young and exciting.
If I do have one concern, um, and this can be addressed fairly simply next season, you're
losing a lot of grit.
You're losing Murphy.
You're losing Dickinson.
You're losing Doc.
Three of your more physical players and you didn't really bring that back in Magia Pony
at all.
If, if Lardis comes up, he's not bringing that back at all.
And it's something that I think we've said about the Hawks all year, even when they were
at full strength as they could be a little grittier that the losing those three.
And if you're losing Fulino or McKev, which we don't know yet, that's all your grit
aside from pretty much Tyler Bertuzzi.
Yeah.
I mean, you brought in Ethan Del Mastro helps like that's the guy that, that can play physical
and that can be that, that edge player, that gritty player.
And you know, as we kind of talked about on today's show regarding Boa Ver, like that's
a guy that has that, that physicality, that edge, that grit in, in his game as well.
But of course, he still has yet to even be a professional hockey player.
So you can't really just say, oh, well, he's going to step in and do it.
Yeah, I mean, that is a factor.
That is something that I think you definitely lose.
But it's something that Jeff Blaschel's talked about specifically with like the defenseman.
Being able to find that edge in your game.
And if it's not ingrained in your DNA, find a way to pull it out of it.
Like dig deep in your DNA and find that ability to play with a bit of an edge and be able
to be a bit more physical, be a bit more of a, you know, a pain in the butt to have to
deal with.
And you know, you could look around the room if you're a member of the Black Hawks and
see that Dickinson's gone and Murphy's gone and, and, and docs gone.
And kind of realize like, hey, like we, we can't get pushed around.
And I'm sure Nick Filino is going to be a guy that is, is going to make that message
clear.
And maybe he needs to beat up Kevin Kortzinski again, like he did a few years ago.
But he's, yeah, I mean, that's going to be a, a message.
I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow's practice, you know, they, they do a little bit of that,
like, hey, like let's, we need to, we need to compete.
We need to keep that, that edge in our game and the guys that usually bring in aren't
here anymore.
So we got to, we got to find ways to bring it.
That'll definitely be something that they'll need to, need to look at and address.
And, yeah, I mean, that's, that's, that's a fair point.
We have a super chat here from history, racer 22 says, good value.
We'll miss Doc.
Here's hoping the first comes in big and by the offseason, it's time for Kyle Davis
in the flip the script and acquire talent.
That remains to be seen.
It really feels like they're going super, super young next season.
But you never know, he has been, he's Davidson, the sniffed around big moves before.
We've talked at nauseam about him trying to get Jay Gensel.
We learned that last offseason, he was sniffing around Jason, Jason Robertson.
If Dallas was willing to move him, they have not yet moved, Jason Robertson.
And he always says that when it makes sense and when the opportunity presents, he won't
be shy about doing it, I don't think he's going to go out there and do anything for the
sake of it, which I think is prudent, right?
And there's one thing Kyle Davidson, and I think it's, some people hate it about him,
but it's probably in the, in the long term, a good thing is he is patient and he's not
going to do a move just for the sake of appeasing a vocal part of the fan base or for making
a headline in the over the summer.
If the move makes sense, he'll do it.
But if I'm predicting, I think they're just going super young next year and given
Frandel and Cancer, I'm in Lord, isn't all these guys a chance to prove themselves at
the NHL level.
You know, we might have found out tonight, what mystery player, Andrew Mangia Pani.
Yeah, well, maybe who knows who knows, um, yeah, I mean, I, I think this is, look, as, as
much as it's like, uh, and I understand people's, um, you know, pounding the table, gotta
get more talent, get the dark, help, all that stuff, um, this is, this is the rebuild.
This is what it's been predicated on, it's been, it's been, you know, talked about with,
with patients and these, you know, restocking the prospect system and getting these young
players in and getting them to be the guys that are going to turn the page of the black
hawks into that next era and Friday night's game is going to be the, the new, what was it?
The new, new originals, the next originals era, good timing.
Cause here they all come, um, but it's, yeah, I mean, that's, that's all these guys that
we've, you know, been following and getting excited about these first and second round
and third round picks and these prospects that we've been watching and, and seeing their
development growth, they're all going to be in training camp next year.
A lot of them are going to be in training camp next year and it's going to be exciting
to see, you know, who makes the opening night lineup, how they're utilized.
I, I do expect Frontel to be an NHL air quickly, sort of a, if not to start next season
in NHL air.
I would think there'll be an adjustment period for him and Roman cancer off, but they'll
both do it in the NHL.
Um, you're going to have spallicy turn pro, the knacker turn pro.
We know Boavares turning pro, um, I'm missing somebody.
Maybe Jack Pridum is a guy that, you know, you, you look at and say, hey, maybe like he
could be, uh, on that cusp, John Mustard's been talked about, um, like they've, they've
got a lot of young guys that are taking that next step and there's guys that are here
now, that'll be second year pros.
That makes a big difference from year one to year two.
We've seen how much of a difference it makes from year two to three for a guy like kind
of a dart.
It'll be year two to three next year for nasa like that's, there's a lot of excitement
in, and youth and those are going to be the guys that are supposed to be and are
going to be likely given the opportunity to be that help for a bit dart.
Like I would love to see Anton Frontel and Conor Bordard play together as soon as he's
here, it's not going into next season.
Can they, um, just, they, he assigned, can't they just say like, you're coming now?
Frontel.
Yeah.
Like, they could be technically on loan to your garden.
They're not going to rip them away right before he gets to play in the playoffs through
that.
Get over here.
Come play on the, on the next generation night on Friday, let's do that.
All right.
Let them play those playoff games.
Yeah.
There you go.
All right.
We got to hit the break zone.
When we come back, we are going to get some super chats and continue the conversation here
back in two minutes on CHGO Black Hawks.

the products, but our friends at fuel stocked me up.

We're back on CHL blackhawks.
If you've not done it yet, please hit that like button for us.
We just finished our show.
I drove home for two hours and immediately came back down to the basement to do a to
do an emergency pod presented by infinity, of course.
If you're just joining us here are the full details of tonight's trade.
The blackhawks acquire Andrew Mangiapani in a 2027 first round pick that is top 12 protected.
The oilers get Jason Dickinson and 50% retained and Colton Doc.
So that is the full deal.
We have a 20 dollar super chat from Adrian who says, so what do the lines look like on
Friday?
I kind of ran through this earlier, but here's what I'm predicting.
I'm saying Bidard Green Burakowski, Nazar Denato, Tara Vinein, more Bertuzzi, Mikaev,
Fulino, Slaagert, Mangiapani.
That's my that's my 12 if Mangiapani is here in time and he should be.
So you got to go through the visa process coming from Kale.
That's a good question.
Well, Dickinson would have to do that too to go to Edmonton, right?
Yeah.
He's with the oilers right away, so he's already with the oilers, but did he play?
I don't think he played.
I think he's playing tomorrow.
Yeah.
Okay.
Well, then yeah, I mean, if if Mangiapani is here and ready to go on Friday, then sure,
give him the run.
But you also, like you said before, you also have laughter.
He's still around or you got a bunch of defensemen.
You can go 11 and seven if you want.
And that way you get all the defensemen that are healthy in the lineup.
I'd be fine with that.
I think, you know, moving forward, like Friday's Friday's game so long as they're if they're
done making moves, Friday's game lineup is not going to be like the end all be all for
the rest of the season.
Like there will still be some movement, there will be call-ups, there'll be, you know,
the additions of Wavair and Frontel eventually down the road.
Like that'll be, you know, that'll all come into play.
But yeah, Friday, I think they'll keep those, I think they'll keep those top three
lines the same.
And then, you know, we'll just see, we'll see how, how quickly the fourth line shakes
up.
If, if not, you know, go 11 and seven, I'm completely fine with that.
That gets Kevin Kortzinski in the lineup, too.
Well, your teams starting lineup may change, but the price of your internet will not check
out the five-year price guarantee from Xfinity and all of our emergency pods here on CHGOR
sponsored by Xfinity.
We thank them for that sponsorship back to the superchats history racer did that one
already.
Thank you again, buddy.
Wendy City Hockey and M. Hyalman both mentioned Samuel Savois is getting an opportunity
to add some grit to this team.
Savois currently injured, I think.
Yeah, he is injured and I am as much as this pains me.
Uh-oh.
I don't know if he's going to get an NHL look.
I would have happened by now.
I would have thought, yeah, I think we've we've kind of been seeing a lot of different
opportunities open up at times and then it just he hasn't been the one to get to get the
call.
Um, I don't think you need to close the book, but I do think that it's it's getting close
to time where he's going to be passed over.
And he could, like, he could be one of those guys that, you know, has a very good professional
hockey career plays in the NHL and could be that, like, on call NHL guy, if you need
him, um, but he's just never been to the NHL yet, like he's still, he's still waiting
for it.
Um, yeah, I don't know.
I think once frontels here, he's down a step.
One spot there is here.
He's probably down a step again.
Nick Lardus surpassed him pretty quickly.
So I mean, it's unfortunate because we all, I think everybody really likes him in the
Black Hawks world.
Yeah.
Um, I just don't know if, if he's going to get that opportunity to ever be in the NHL in
Chicago.
Could be, could be elsewhere.
Who knows?
But it just seems like, uh, you know, the, the leap frog effect is, is, uh, is happening
for him.
Yeah.
100%.
And I think if anyone's coming up from Rockford and usually we find these things out right
before practice, that's going to get announced because either the guy is standing on the
ice or he's about to be standing on the ice.
If I'm predicting a call up, I think it's going to be Nick Lardus, but the ice hogs
are playing right now.
Uh, they're playing Grand Rapids as we speak.
I actually sent a text to somebody out in Rockford to say, Hey, anyone's minutes going
down?
That's before we knew about, uh, Colton Doc getting traded.
Um, so yeah, uh, we'll see.
But if you don't have to call anyone up, though, you really don't know you don't know.
You, you have the, you have the bodies, uh, to, to fill out a lineup without having to
call them up.
I would, I would do it, um, but, uh, yeah, you don't, you don't necessarily have to, uh,
right away.
But yeah, Lardus, uh, he's, he scored in the Rockford game.
So that was good.
Good to see that for him.
Um, yeah, it'd be interesting to see it to keep, uh, keep an eye on the AHL transaction
log tomorrow morning because they're usually a little bit faster.
When a guy gets called up, then, uh, you know, when, when he's actually dressed, uh,
and ready to go, um, for practice tomorrow, but yeah, it won't be exciting.
There's a lot of people mentioning in the chat, uh, if Mangio Pane is with the black
ox, it's going to have to change his number because he's wearing 88.
He's worn 88 in every, on every team he's ever been on.
And that stops now.
Yeah.
Is he going, is he going 89?
Oh, yeah, you can do that because that's open.
Eight's not 18 is not 28 is not 38 is not 48 is not 48 is not over Kowski.
He'd have to go 58, 68.
Yeah, I think, I think 98 makes sense.
Yeah.
Probably.
It's the closest one.
I don't know why he wears 88 is he born in 88?
No.
No, he's not that.
Yeah, he's not that old.
He could, I mean, could have been influenced by Patrick Kane himself.
Who knows?
You might just love Patrick Kane.
Yeah.
And who can blame him?
By the way, he was getting honored, uh, tonight in Detroit for becoming the, uh, all
time US born leading scorer and Mike Medano was there in Detroit, which is pretty cool.
So props to Mike Medano, who leveraged the Black Hawks for a really big deal on it.
Still annoys me to this day.
Good for him.
Well, Mike Babcock got him in the end to nine him as 1500th game.
There you go.
Karma.
Cool.
Yeah.
Um, it was something we were kind of talking about with, uh, with regards to this
trade before the show in regards to the 2027 top 12 protected first round pick coming
back in the, uh, doc in Dickinson deal is right now looking at it, you know, with, with
the Florida pick this year, which is top 10 protected.
They're currently ninth, uh, would, would be drafting ninth.
If that ends up being the case, Black Hawks have a very high likelihood of three first
round picks in next year's draft and like you can, you can talk about, you know, stock
piling picks and how many picks do you need?
If you lose the Florida pick this year, because it's top 10 protected and it shifts to next
year and you already have this 2027 top 12 protected, uh, first round pick as well.
You have three second round picks.
You have a 2028 second round pick that you've got in the Murphy deal.
Um, you could still come away with two picks in this year's draft by packaging two of
those three 2027 picks and, and, and making moves that way.
You could still come away with two picks in this first round and you going into, um, you
also have three seconds this year.
Right.
Yeah.
Like you have a lot of capital to move capital move around.
So, you know, if it's, it's, it's not necessarily all doom and gloom.
If the Florida pick transfers to next year, you could still package things up and come
away with at least two first round picks this year and we've seen Kyle Davidson be aggressive
with that capital and be aggressive with getting first round picks, um, multiple ones.
He's had multiple ones in each one of his drafts.
So, and he's always trying to move up for the guy he wants.
He's done it year after year after year.
Yeah.
And I did see that question too.
Like how many first round picks do you need?
They're getting to the contract max.
You, you get these first round picks because you never know which ones are not going to
pan out.
No one bats a thousand.
You know, everyone loved Dale Talon and rightfully so he picked Cam Barker and that was a
bust and he picked Jack skilly and that was a bust, right?
Like it just happens, not every pick pans out.
So the more scratches you have in the lottery ticket, the better odds you're going to have
and those more expensive lottery tickets usually pay out more.
So those first round picks become very valuable.
And I think that's part of what you would probably imagine that in an ideal world, Sam
Bowman wanted to give up less than the first for Jason Dickinson.
So Kyle Davidson probably said, okay, fine.
You've got an Andrew Mangiapani problem.
We'll take him, make it a first.
We're checked it.
Top 12.
I don't think Edmonton is going to be one of the 12 worst teams in hockey next year.
So fine.
You never know, but probably not.
We said that about Florida.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, if Connor McDavid, you know, blows his knee out, then all bets are off.
But it seems like a pretty safe bet.
What we do need to learn though is if it's, so I would imagine the condition we need to
know is if it is, if the lawyers do have a top 12 pick, does it just slide unprotected
to the next year?
I would imagine.
That's a bit of info.
We don't have that.
We will get one things become official.
So we'll see.
All right.
And so I think it was Pastor Steve said that the deadline is going to be very slow in
Friday.
Of course it is.
You know why?
Because we're going to be on live during the whole damn thing.
We're on tomorrow at three.
So unless, of course, like we said, after today's show, unless something happens between
now and then, tomorrow at three will be on after practice.
We'll have a lot to get to after the first practice after these two big trades.
And then trade deadline day.
The plan is for us to be live from 1 p.m. Central to 3 p.m. Central.
So the hour before the deadline and the hour after the deadline, and then there's a game
that night.
And then we go to the game.
Yeah.
Then we go to the game.
Then we do a post game show.
So you're going to be sicker than us, sicker of us than usual.
So set your reminders tomorrow at three, Friday at one, and then again, post game.
And then we have a nice calm Saturday where we can just take the day off and sleep for
12 hours, which sounds amazing.
Who are they going to sign on Saturday?
Saturday is going to be a, but darks extension.
Well, that'd be fun.
That'd be fun.
Work another day.
Something exactly.
All right.
We're going to wrap things up.
Thank you all so much for being here.
If you've not done it, please hit that like button for us.
We'd really appreciate that big time.
We want to thank Chloe Feele for hustling to get the show ready to go.
Thanks to Emma Elperovich, our social media director, who just knocks out the park with our graphics and everything.
Thanks to Steven Nicholas, who was on standby in case we needed anything.
But again, thanks mostly to you.
And we got one more chance to tell you today only expires at midnight central $34 for a whole year of a CHGO diehard membership.
And that includes the t-shirt.
So basically you're paying for a t-shirt and you're getting all the perks you get of a diehard membership.
So jump on it.
Take advantage that offer expires again tonight at midnight.
So only a few hours to go all CHGO.com is the place to go.
$34 for the year.
We've got links all over our socials about it.
So hit it.
Make sure you get it.
We'll talk to you tomorrow with three or sooner.
Thanks to Xfinity for sponsoring this and all CHGO emergency podcasts.
We'll talk to you then on CHGO Blackhawks.
