Pamela Colloff, reporter for ProPublica and the New York Times Magazine, joins the show to discuss her debut book, Catch the Devil: A True Story of Murder, Deception, and Injustice on the Gulf Coast (Knopf). The book examines Paul Skalnik, a con man and jailhouse informant whose testimony helped convict dozens of people, including James Dailey, a Vietnam veteran sent to death row for a 1985 murder despite the absence of physical evidence against him. Colloff discusses how she found the story, her own experience being deceived by Skalnik during years of reporting, and what his case reveals about the use of jailhouse informants in the American justice system.
