他自己則是在各大學流浪一陣子之後，受到他稱為萊茵河以東最偉大的物理學家，索末非的吸引，來到慕尼黑，
他鑽研鈉鉀的光譜，針對鹼金族元素的季曼效應，提出蘭德規則，
更提出內層電子與原子核構成所謂的核角動量試圖解釋鹼金族元素的LS耦合，
雖然他的模型沒有成功，但卻引導未來一個重要突破發現！
