It’s departure from until-then standard plotting was something of a breakthrough and, along with other films by like-minded filmmakers of the time, helped to influence films – and style – to come. It was voted 2nd in Sight & Sound magazine’s ‘greatest films’ poll in 1962, then came in at #5 in 1972 and #7 in 1982.
