ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ตอนต้น สยามเผยแพร่พุทธศาสนาเถรวาทและเปลี่ยนปราสาท วิษณุโลก จากเทวสถานฮินดูเป็นพุทธสถาน จึงเรียกว่า นครวัด มีการดัดแปลงบางส่วนเป็นพระอุโบสถและประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปให้บูชา คำว่า "นครวัด" อาจมาจากขนาดใหญ่ของปราสาท อย่างไรก็ตาม นครวัดเป็นเพียงส่วนหนึ่งของเมืองพระนคร การเรียก "นครวัด นครธม" จึงไม่ถูกต้อง
