In Episode 15 of the Hockey &… Podcast, Jay and Jen break down some of the biggest and weirdest stories around the hockey world—and beyond.
Jay and Jen discuss the NHL’s possible new “power couple”: Jack Hughes and pop star Tate McRae. The hosts debate whether the relationship actually qualifies as a power couple, compare them to famous sports-celebrity pairings, and speculate on whether the relationship could affect Hughes’ career.
The episode wraps with a hilarious and slightly uncomfortable segment about “creepy lyric songs.” Jay and Jen highlight classic tracks that didn’t age well, and break down why their lyrics feel pretty questionable by today’s standards.
From serious NHL talk to celebrity relationships and cringe-worthy music nostalgia, Episode 15 delivers the usual mix of hockey talk, humor, and off-the-rails discussion
So it does work both ways granted.
I don't know if I believe you will go ahead.
Because I don't even know if you checked me.
I'm not way to fact check.
Well, then there was not even.
Welcome to Hockey and Podcasts.
Hello, everybody and welcome to the Hockey and Podcasts.
This is episode number 15.
This is the podcast where the gloves drop
and the opinions lie.
We're breaking down some of the big stories in the NHL.
We're also calling out the nonsense.
We're even mixing in whatever makes other conversations interesting for us.
Whether it's about hockey or about something else.
If it's happening on the ice or even near it or adjacent or not on it at all.
If it's interesting to us, we will talk about it.
So let's get into episode 15.
Yay!
With me always as my co-host, Jennifer, on the other side of the desk.
Jennifer, how are you doing on this lovely day today?
I am doing, wow.
How are you doing on this lovely day?
I'm doing okay.
The weather's warming up now and it's getting nicer slowly.
We had a really nice day one day.
And now we're back to it being cold-ish.
So someday, someday soon.
But as long as the cold weather's here, that means hockey's still around.
So that's a good thing.
That is a good thing.
All right, Jennifer.
Thank you for that spirited give-and-go there.
So let's get right into our episode.
You know, one of these days.
Today in episode 15, Jen, here's what we're going to talk about.
We're going to look at some unfortunate news dealing with Austin Matthews.
We're going to take a look at Charlie McAvoy.
And why is it that everybody just wants to punch him in the face or hurt his pretty little face?
You know, they better stop.
It's just, it's too much at this point.
Then we'll get into our first segment where we will take a look at the NHL's new power couple.
Who is it?
We're going to let you know.
I don't know if I call them a power couple, but...
And then, Jen, we're going to end with a very interesting topic to each of us that we brought
up last week. We kind of hinted towards it.
We're going to talk about some of our favorite creepy lyric songs.
All of that, Jen, and much more on episode 15 of The Hockey and Podcast.
You know it.
All right, so we mentioned we're going to start off with Austin Matthews.
Yes.
Now, sadly, the Toronto Maple Leafs captain, Austin Matthews, or as I like to call him,
AM-3-4, because I'm cool and hip.
He's going to miss the remainder of the 25-26 NHL season with a touring MCL injury on his left
knee. This was announced on Friday by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Now, Matthews has a grade three MCL tear.
Do we know what a grade three is like, is that on the more extensive end or on the top end?
Well, I can speak to this.
On the top end or on the go before.
Please do. Please do with your fast knowledge.
All right, see as how you're cutting me off left and right here.
I'm just going to cut, you know, get into it.
So I recently have dealt with this similar injury.
Now, Austin Matthews and myself are very similar.
No, not even those.
We're both great hockey players that contribute to their teams in a very effective way.
I myself had an MCL tear.
You definitely have a tear.
I had an MCL injury.
Now, my injury was somewhere between a one and a two.
Now, an MCL number one means you strained it.
Typically, it takes between two and four weeks for you to kind of get back.
I would assume if you're a, you know, high output athlete, like Austin Matthews,
probably less. So that's number one.
Number two is you're on the edge of, you've really injured it.
You bruised it, as they say.
The typical recovery time for something like that is between four to eight weeks.
And they say for the normal person, usually a little bit longer,
and you'll have some side effects from that.
So yours was like a, yours was like a point five then, right?
Mine was somewhere between a one and a two.
Now, grade three, you're getting more on the severe side.
And they did throw in the word tear.
So now when that happens, that's a very extensive long term injury.
Could be months rehab is a slow go because, you know, the MCL's got to get
itself back together.
They have a lot of therapy they got to do.
But like we said, Austin Matthews is a prime athlete.
The other part of this is not only did he get an MCL tear,
but he also bruised his quadricep muscle in the same injury.
Now, you might be asking, Jen, how did this happen?
Did he slip in the shower?
Where was it?
Hopefully, what didn't have anything to do with the Olympic?
It did not.
Okay.
It happened this past Thursday when the Toronto Maple Leafs played the Anaheim
ducts and defenseman Radco Goudus went to hit Matthews and they had a neon knee collision.
Now, neon knee is not good in the NHL.
You don't want to see that happen.
It was pretty bad when you watched it.
Now, Goudus in the game was giving it, given a major penalty and then he was ejected.
So that kind of tells you the ref saw it as something pretty severe.
We just found out that Radco Goudus is going to get a five-game suspension because of that hit.
So that was more like intentional.
That's awful.
Did it look intentional?
Did you saw it?
I did see it and the problem is when you use the word intentional,
that's a tough word to use because this game moves at the speed of light.
Radco Goudus is a physical player.
He's looking to use the body, especially on a guy like Austin Matthews is flying all over the place.
But is he considered a dirty, he's not considered a dirty player, right?
Where is he?
Dirty.
No, but physical, we'll use the word physical.
He has had incidents in the past where he may have pushed it over the line a little bit.
Okay, gotcha.
Now, when asked by the reporters, they asked the Toronto coach, Ruby, he kind of said,
yeah, look pretty intentional to me, but when they talked to the Anaheim coach, of course,
he said, look, everything happens at a split second.
Yeah, it's just an unfortunate incident.
Either way, we're not going to have Austin Matthews for the rest of the year.
And neither are the Toronto Maple Leafs fan.
Now, the bad part about this, Jen, for you and me, because I know you're concerned about
what I'm about to bring up is this potentially can affect the Bruins.
Hmm, how so you may ask you.
How so, dear, please explain.
You'll recall the Bruins made a trade last year with the Maple Leafs where we sent
Brandon Carlo to them. And we received back Frazier Minton, who by the way is unbelievably great.
He is my new favorite player.
Yeah, I know, I know you don't ever shut up about him.
Go on.
We also got their first round draft pick for next year.
But there was a little caveat put on that draft.
And the caveat was, is that pick is protected if the Toronto Maple Leafs end up with a top five
pick, meaning we don't get that pick, we get next year's pick after that.
Now, right now, where everything stands, Toronto is a bad team.
They only have 67 points. Now, they're not the worst team in the NHL.
But they are in the bottom, let's say, 7 to 8.
So, the problem lies in this.
Let's say, Jen, that these guys, that the Toronto Maple Leafs just tank it.
And they end up with a top five pick when the season ends.
Well, that doesn't mean the Bruins don't get that pick yet, because in the NHL,
they have that little lottery system, where they take the, I believe it's top eight teams.
They throw a bunch of ping pong balls or cards into a bingo thingy.
And they start picking and you could have a high pick and you could move down or vice versa.
Now, the worse you are, record wise, you get more ping pong balls in there. So, it usually works out.
But look at last year, the Bruins ended up being the number five worst team in the NHL.
Where did they draft though in that draft? Well, they moved down to number seven
because of the way the ping pong balls worked out. So, right now, if you're a Bruins fan,
you're kind of sweating because you may not get a top five or seven or eight pick this year,
because Toronto may end up keeping that pick. And Austin Matthew's not being on the ice does
not help out our situation. So, that's why we're a little concerned as Bruin fans because of the
fact that, well, the Toronto Maple Leafs don't have their best player for the rest of the year.
Will that change if, if the Bruins are suddenly like so much worse?
That pick has nothing to do with the Bruins. It's how good Toronto does because it's their pick.
We obtain their pick and it's reliant on how bad they do regardless and then where they end up
in the after the lottery. We need them to be say pick six or lower. That's where we need them to be.
All right. So, unfortunately, no Austin Matthews the rest of the year, great player,
gonna miss them for the rest of this year, but he will be back and I think he'll be back next year
with a little chip on his shoulder, but we shall see. Jen, the Boston Bruins and our boy,
Charlie McAvoy. I'm telling you that guy, he just starting to look, he's just starting to look normal
again. That's so bad. Why is it? What is it about Charlie McAvoy that either hockey pucks,
hockey sticks or the boards or other players just seem to want to bash his face in?
I feel like he's just got got a bullseye on him right now because of the injury because it's
such a massive injury and they look at him as a potential weakness. So, I mean, that's
what I'm thinking partially. I think it's just misfortune. I don't think you are not wrong.
Let's go over that misfortune that he's had this year. All right. In the 25-26 season,
on November 15, Charlie McAvoy suffered a fractured jaw. Now, he suffered in more medical terms,
a linear fracture of his jaw after he took a no-adopted slap shot off of his face when they played
the Montreal Canadian. He went right into surgery. They inserted a metal plate and he lost several
teeth from his face getting hit by the puck. I wonder what the what the comparing
chara's injury to McAvoy's. Well, you recall chara when he suffered that injury, they wired his
jaw shut. They did and they didn't do that with McAvoy, right? He was still able to
do that. They didn't do anything or anything, but well, they said that the injury forced him to
follow a liquid diet that resulted in Charlie McAvoy losing significant weight. I believe it was
like around 20 pounds. And then he was sidelined until mid-December. Now, Charlie McAvoy heals,
doesn't heal up, but basically gets to the point where they clear him to play and he's playing with
the bubble now. We remember that, you know, around the end of December going into the Olympics.
Okay, you would think, all right, bad injury, you know, but let's leave it. He'll heal up for
during the season and he'll just be fine. No, no, no, no, no. In early February of 26, Charlie
McAvoy took an elbow to the head slash face from Sanders, Vilmantis. Yep. Okay. Now, although he
continued to play, he later shared photos of his severely swollen face, and he expressed
frustration over the lack of a penalty on that play. And I agree with him. I agree with him too.
Now, even before that, Jen, let's flash forward. So Charlie McAvoy's face is getting beat up.
It's all swollen. He's missing teeth. It's okay. But he's on the men now. Well, March 10,
2026 in a game against the L.A. Kings, McAvoy sustained another hit to the face. So he just
took the bubble off after the Olympics was over. So he's playing just with the half-sheel
and he proceeds to get hit in the face again, that shift or knocked out several of his front teeth.
Okay. So let's see. The initial injury where his jaw is broken, I think I believe it's the left
lower side. And possibly I couldn't really see possibly the upper as well. I know the lower
is all going on the left side. He doesn't have that many more teeth to be knocked out. What the heck
is going on this poor guy? He just can't catch a break. This shows you how tough this kid is.
Yes. He takes this injury. And despite the fact that he's missing teeth, he's bleeding visibly.
You can see in his mouth it's just full of blood and his teeth are stained. He comes back in the
game and scores the game winning goal against the L.A. Kings in overtime. And you'll recall after
he scores that goal, Jen, he goes up against the glass where he celebrates with that was awesome.
Lost in fan. That was amazing. I loved it. And I mean, all I got to say, and I've mentioned this
before. If anything even remotely close to that happened to me, I'd be out on down for the count
for weeks, weeks. And I'm not even talking about the broken jaw thing. I'm just talking about
getting banged in the head where you get your your teeth knocked out. That's horrifying.
To the fact that he was able to get they must they must really shoot them full of some happy
juice as man oh man. Well, after that L.A. game and the victory, I don't think he was full of any
happy juice because they showed him during the interview, you know, they after around the lock
room. He said, I'm only answering two questions. And one of the reporters asked, you know, why do you
think this keeps happening and what's your state of mind? And basically, he just said, I'm really
tired of this. And I understand that statement because of what you said, if you're getting hit in
the face constantly, the pain is unbelievable. Yeah. Face to jaw pain is very bad. And he's been
dealing with it since November. And you know, the way it works, you get jaw pain. It just doesn't
stay in your jaw. It goes down your neck, goes down your back, goes down your arm. I feel for him.
It's even to the point where it affects all those things. But let's talk about the fact that he
can't really eat probably as well as he wants. He's probably still on a heavy liquid diet
because he's missing teeth. And the pain is just through the roof. He can't go heavy on pain
medication because he's a professional athlete. And it's going to affect his overall play because
he's still playing. So from the hockey and podcast to those in the NHL to the NHL gods above
whoever's listening, please stop focusing in on Charlie McAvoy's face and leave the kid alone.
Let him have some joy the rest of the season to where he could sit down to a meal and not have
a lot of pain because he took a puck to the face or stick to the face or an elbow to the face.
At this point, his luck is going so bad in that regard. He should just leave that shield on.
Just leave it on until he's completely healed, which probably won't be until the end of this year.
And I mean, the end of this year, meaning like into October because I mean, how can you properly
heal if you're still getting knocked around? It's not possible. So I don't know. I just don't want
to see it stopped. It's poor guy. Let's leave it with this question, Jim. The Bruins don't
have a captain. The top two candidates are David Postranak and Charlie McAvoy.
Does this do anything for you as far as your mind that he should be the captain? Yeah. He's
given Chara vibes right now. What kind of vibes? Chara vibes, you know, the kind he's going out there
and he's doing it. He's doing it regardless of injury, regardless of what he's gotten going on.
He's still out there and he's still making the plays that matter. And I love Posta, but for some reason,
I don't know. I just don't feel like he's as relatable as McAvoy. And it could be just because of
the fact that McAvoy has been injured so much this year. I mean, when you when you get injured that
much, it'd be very a very cold person to not be able to look at him and feel some empathy for him.
So maybe that's what's happening with me and why I'm feeling him more than Posta, but I just
think that he's he's putting forth all all the feels, you know, he's got the feeling of captain.
The Bruins organization and the Bruins fan base always respect players that give
their all that show up when they're injured, like you said, Chara. So he has that going for him
as well as how well he's been playing lately. I would say he's by far the Bruins best
defenseman and look what he did in the Olympics. He really showed up. He was a top-notch defensive
defenseman that helped them win gold. So he is that going for him.
Now the other thing is Posta is a fan favorite. He's got that personality that a lot of people
like. He scores a lot of goals. He's a very offensive player. He's even showing up
as far as he's throwing the body more. He's really he's playing hard. I'm not taking anything away
from him whatsoever. I just feel like McVoy just has a better presence.
You feel like he fits more into the Boston Bruins framework as far as what the captain should be?
Well, yeah, I think. I mean, okay, so I look at Posta and I see fancy. And Boston isn't fancy.
And that's not taking anything. I'm not downgrading him in any way. It's just that, you know,
he's not as gritty of a player as McVoy is. And I think with Boston, you need a really gritty
captain. That makes sense. And I think there's a lot of Boston fans that agree with that.
I think there's some fans that will go the other way too. That's why this is going to be an
interesting choice. I think it's going to be next year. One of those two will be the captain
next year. I mean, if you ask me, who do I think it's going to be? I have to agree with you.
I'm leaning a little bit more towards the Charlie McVoy being the captain. Right. I mean, just
the way that he reacted with the fans was he's going to get his own team psyched to play. And
that kind of stuff like what he did with the fans on the on the glass. I think that's a big deal.
It speaks volumes to his own player, you know, to his own team. So I would love to see him be
captain. I think that it would be a nice fit. We'll see next year who the captain is. But as we
mentioned before, please, NHL gods leave Charlie McVoy's face alone for the rest of the season.
For the love of all, I mean my goodness. Okay, moving on. Yes.
You've heard of power couples in the actor world, in the musician world, in the sports world.
Jen, we're going to talk today about potentially the new NHL power couple. Okay.
Okay. Now who were referencing who you're referencing who I'm referencing. And I think you're
going to agree with me on this. The new power couple in the NHL is golden boy Jack Hughes
and pop singer slash dancer, Tate McCray. Now news came out recently that the two of them are now
dating exclusively, which means they're not dating anybody else. If you didn't know that,
that's what the kids are calling it these days. Okay. Now we all know who Jack Hughes is, right?
He's a talented NHL superstar plays for the devils. He recently became very well known because he
scored the golden goal that propelled the US to gold medal status against Canada.
Yeah. So we all know who Jack Hughes is. He did the talk show circuit. He played very well in
the tournament. He lost some teeth, continued to play, took a penalty where Canada couldn't capitalize
and then came out and won the game and over time for the US. So Jack Hughes, we all know him well in
the hockey world. Jen, do you know who Tate McCray is? I know who she is. And the only reason I
know who she is is because she's dating Jack Hughes. I mean, I don't know where from from anybody
in for any other reason, never heard her music. None of that kind of stuff. So
well, let's get a little background on Tate McCray because she is dating a NHL superstar. So
maybe this will help you to say yes, this is the new NHL power cup. I don't think the the word
power couple is applicable to people that just started dating FYI, but any who? Well, Tate McCray
is a Canadian. So let's just start there. If you're Tate McCray and you're dating Jack Hughes
and the Olympics are going on, who do you think she's rooting for to start this conversation? Jack
Hughes or Canada? I would hope I would hope since they're just dating that she'd be rooting for
Canada, but who knows? People are weird. People are weird. So Tate Rossner McCray was born on
July 1st, 2003. Now, I know I'm getting old when I'm starting to hear anybody born in 2003
is now somewhat of an adult or as of adult age. So that makes me feel real, but she is a Canadian
singer, songwriter and dancer as I mentioned before. Now, she first gained prominence as a contestant
on our American reality TV series. So you think you can dance and she premiered in 2016.
After that, she signed with RCA Records and started to gain recognition for her EP,
all the things I never said, a song that was released in 2020. And later on, she released another
song called Too Young to Be Sad in 2021 that became, well, this just goes to show you how to out of
touch you are because this became the song Too Young to Be Sad, the most streamed female EP
of 2021 on Spotify. She then proceeded to follow that up with the single You Broke Me first,
and it was her first Billboard Hot 100 chart entry in the US. So she's climbing, right? She's
climbing. I still don't know who she is, but good for her. In 2022, McRae released her debut studio
album called I Used to Think I Could Fly, which peaked at number three on the Canadian music charts
and she had a single called She's All I Want to Be. And it was big in Canada. Now, her second
studio album came out a year later in 2023 called Think Later. And she started to get into more
of a pop-oriented sound. And that was really shown by her multi-platinum single called Greedy,
which became one of the best-selling songs of 2024 globally. So you say she started to get into
more of the pop genre. Was she not in the pop genre before? Did she start out as something else?
I don't know. She was a singer. I thought maybe she started country or something like that.
To be honest with you, the only song that really was ever on my radar was Greedy. I did hear it
from time to time. So I do note, and it's your typical straight ahead young female pop.
So yeah, I mean, obviously she's a very attractive woman. They're playing that up.
She has a really good voice. So again, we've seen this before.
Now in 2025, McRae released her third studio album called So Close to What,
which topped in the US Billboard 200. He yielded another top 10 hit, or I should say hits called
sports car, revolving door, and tit for tat. Now in the same year, she scored her first American
number one single because she was the featured artist along or as she said, she was a featured artist
on Morgan Whalen's song, What I Want. And her first Grammy Award nomination for the soundtrack
just keep watching. So she plays with Morgan Whalen, gets a lot of recognition,
and then gets nominated for a Grammy for the single, just keep watching.
Great. Good for her. So great. She's made a name for herself.
And now she's dating Jack Hugh. So you said before, you don't consider this a power couple
because they just started dating. Okay. Yeah. I mean, a power couple, you know, to me,
a power couple has been through it, you know, and they they're very well known and
they've been around for a while. And this is so new. They're just just now a couple. So I don't
see them being a power couple, but we shall see because things do have a way of turning into much
larger things. So we will see what happens with their cute little relationship.
It got me thinking who are some of the bigger names when it comes to power couples in the sports
world. So Jen, I'm going to give you a list and you tell me power couple, yes or no, you ready?
I'm going to start off with David Beckham and Victoria Beckham. So I was right. You're talking
soccer star, world soccer star and a spice girl. Yep. So massive, right? Massive, yes, massive.
Okay. How about America's Tom Brady and Gisele Bunchan when they were together? Massive.
Massive power couple that he destroyed, but I dig right.
Agreed. Totally agreed. Yeah. Totally agree. How about Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez when
they were together? I don't know because I mean, they're right on the edge because how long were
they even together? They weren't they were together for a few years, but it was I mean, they were
they were almost there, but not quite. They did engage. They got engaged and then they split
up before the marriage. So does that constitute being together long enough? I don't know. I think
I think like I say, I think they were right on the edge. Okay. Here's a couple I think that
when we talk about Jack Hughes and Tate McCray, I think this is the equivalent of a couple back
in the day. Jen, do you remember the tennis player Anna Cornicova when she dated Enrique and Glacias?
I do very much so. And I do not agree with your comparison. I don't think I don't think
that Anna Cornicova or Enrique Iglesias are the same as Tate McCray explain. I think Anna Cornicova
and Enrique Iglesias are definitely in a higher echelon than the two that we're talking about
because Anna Cornicova, she had, I mean, she was just well, I don't know, maybe maybe not so much.
Let's talk this out. I don't see them as a power couple. Anyway, Anna Cornicova and Enrique Iglesias
let's talk this out from this aspect. Think of this. So as an athlete, Anna Cornicova and Mesamesh,
she was a top athlete, but she'd ever won big tournaments, but she was more known as a model,
I guess we could say, right? But she was sports is what got her into that world.
Right. So let's compare her to Jack Hughes. So you're saying Jack Hughes is a bigger star than Anna
Cornicova? I think as far as notoriety, I think that Anna Cornicova was bigger than Jack Hughes,
as far as notoriety as an athlete or as a model both put together. So I think she was more well known
due to different for different reasons than Jack. I think she was more widely known,
whereas Jack Hughes is well known in the hockey world. Okay, so name recognition and
a Cornicova check mark next to it compared to Jack. Fair enough. Now if we go to the other side,
compare Enrique Iglesias to Tate McCray. Not even close. Not even close. Not even close.
Go ahead. As you got the last name Iglesias with you, I mean, he had quite a few songs that were
pretty decent on his own, but then he's got the last name. So that already gives him cred.
But I still wouldn't put him and Anna in the category of being a power couple either.
So I don't think either couple are considered power couple.
January for this, I can name two Enrique Iglesias songs.
Okay. Okay. Off hand. Did you look this up? No, no, I'm not looking this up just off the top
of my head. One of my favorite songs. Yes. Because it's ironically bad, but it's good. Yeah.
Is by LaMose. I love that tune. Great song. Catchy song. That's where Anna Cornicova shows up
in that video. Yes, I know. Okay. And then he also has the song just want to be with you.
So two right off the top of my head of Enrique Iglesias. I agree with you. I don't think he's a
superstar in his own right. I think he's a star because he is a pop star. But the last name does help
I've situation. And I'm going to end with this power couple. And this may be
with this either. I don't think they're a power couple. I don't think they're a power couple.
Well, let's let the people know. Jen, who are we talking about here?
Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe. I don't see them as a power couple at all.
So Mr. Coffee and Marilyn Monroe considered to be the most popular female actress of her time.
Right. You don't consider them a power couple. I don't. I consider them huge on their own.
I do not consider them together as a power couple.
Inter. I don't see it. I don't see it. Because I mean, and I'm not
downing either one of these people. But you know, usually when you're a power couple,
you can think of that person or think of either person and automatically think of the other person.
When I think of Marilyn Monroe, I think of a lot of people not just Joe DiMaggio. And that's
now I'm not thrown shade. It's just the facts about her life. It's just how she lived her life.
And Joe DiMaggio, you know, I hear his name. I am not automatically thinking Marilyn Monroe.
In comparison, when I hear David Beckham, automatically, my mind goes to, oh, Victoria Beckham.
Or Tom Brady. Yeah, my mind automatically goes to Giselle. And even I'll even put Alex Rodriguez
and Jennifer Lopez in there. You know, those two, not as much as the first two, but those two, you
know, their names are kind of synonymous with each other. But Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe,
it's it's not something. It's not for me. Again, I was not alive during this period of time. So
who knows? Maybe at the time they were considered a power couple. Well, back then, you did really
have a lot of this kind of coverage. It would pop up every so often, but not like today.
And when you're Marilyn Monroe and you're kind of tied into President John F. Kennedy. That's what I'm
saying. That's so I can agree with you on that one. Definitely. Okay, Jen, we went over some of
the power couples in sport. Now, here's some Jack Hughes tape, break questions that I have for
you. So let's have a discussion on these three questions. Okay. First and foremost, when it comes
to those two, who people outside the hockey world really care about this. I doubt it. I mean,
I'm in the hockey world and I couldn't care less about it. So I'm thinking anybody who's outside
of the hockey world was like, who? You know, I don't know. Maybe now because he was in the Olympics.
Maybe that's something that maybe his name has gotten hotter. And again, like I said, I didn't even
know who Tate McRae was. I just know her in relation to the fact that she's dating Jack.
If Jack Hughes doesn't win a gold medal in the Olympics, who had would have the bigger name
recognition than at this point? If he didn't win the gold, who do you think has the bigger name
recognition between the two? Well, it's asking me that is kind of not really not fair to Tate
because I already know Jack and I know his siblings. You know, so the name itself is out there.
You know, he and his brother. So and I don't know Tate at all. So for me to give you an opinion
on that, that wouldn't that wouldn't be fair to her. I don't think. I think she has a bigger name
than he does because she's in that pop world. She's got many number one hits. She's been doing it
for a while. She was on. So you think you can dance, which is a very popular series. Right. So she's
in the mainstream. Yeah. Popularity. That Hughes is in the hockey mainstream. Right. I'd say he's a
top 10 name in the NHL. Would you say top 10? Well, now after the Olympics, yeah. Yeah. I'd
agree with that. Here's another question. You look at Jack Hughes. Do you see just handsome,
manly, physical type of guy? Or do you see kind of a little bit of a nerd? I don't see a nerd.
I see a boy. And that I'm not that is again, not I'm not throwing shade. It's not disrespect.
He's just small or then the kind of person that I would think would be with somebody like Tate.
And she's tiny, but he's just not an imposing figure in the hockey world. He's not somebody that
you go out on the ice and you're scared of him or anything like that. I think that she's going to
run right over him. Let me tell you that though. That's my next question. Will Tate totally destroy
geeky Jack in this relationship? Do you think she will break his heart? She's going to show him up
and spit him out. Really? I don't think they have lasting power. I would be very, very happy
for them. If they do, I know nothing about them. I could be completely off base. But I'm just
taking into consideration how old they are, how long they've been together, and what things
look like from the outside. And she just she looks like she's she knows who she is. You know,
she looks like she might have more experience in the relationship world. And again, I have to
keep reiterating this is not I'm not grown shade. This is not a cut on her in any way shape or form.
She's beautiful. It seems like she's a very strong young woman. And I hope that she is.
But yeah, I do see her as somebody who's just more worldly wise, I suppose. And then he is.
Last question. Last discussion. How will them dating affect Jack Hughes's gameplay?
I don't think it's going to I don't think so. No. No. Because you know, the way that he is,
the way from what I've seen of him and how much effort the whole family puts into
being a hockey family that I think from very young age, they have been brought up
to have their career in hockey as their focal point. And there's nothing wrong with that.
But just like the other couples, somebody in the relationship would have to take a back seat.
Because if they're both running constantly, they're not going to work.
It's just not going to work. I mean, look at what happened with Tom Brady and Giselle.
She took a back seat for a really long time. And when it was finally her turn,
what destroyed them was the fact that he didn't back down. He wouldn't take the back seat for a
little while so that she could do what she needed to do for her life. So I think in a relationship
that works, especially with athletes that are as actively playing as hockey players do,
the spouse needs to take a back seat. I don't think take and take a back seat.
I think she's too strong. I'm going to take the opposite side and say, I think it could potentially
affect this game. Meaning. Okay. Let's say they date for a year or so. And let's say they have
a bad breakup. And because they're both public figures, of course, that's going to be in the press
nonstop. It's going to be, you know, whose fault was it? Why did they break up? You know, a lot of
media attention, potentially. I could see her handling that a lot better than him. I don't know.
Like I said, with the family background and how structured everything is, I don't see that being
a problem for him. And I would hope, I would hope if something happens and they part company,
I would hope they both give each other the respect that they deserve and just part amically and not
have, you know, things all in the news, in the media, in the tabloids, all the rest of it. I don't
know if they're big enough to garner that kind of attention. But again, as I say with everything,
we shall see, you know, time, time, they just need time to figure out what they're doing.
Okay. I want to end this segment with a potential power couple that's coming down the pipe.
Yes. And that is Taylor Swift, who is potentially marrying Travis Kelsey.
They are engaged. They're supposed to be getting married this year.
Jen, I have four questions. Rapid fire. Give me the first thing that comes to your mind on these
questions. And I'll do the same thing. You ready? Okay. When it comes to Taylor Swift and Travis
Kelsey, where do you think the ceremony takes place? I already know where the ceremony takes place.
It is supposed to be held at the Ocean House Resort Watch Hill, Rhode Island.
And that, I mean, she had a house in Rhode Island, a massive house in Rhode Island.
And then the date, they have the date down as being around June 13th.
And the reason for that would be their significance in the numbers.
Yes, we'll see how it goes with them too. I do think that they are a power couple now.
Even though they have not married yet, they are so out there in the public eye that as soon as
they got together and she started showing up at his games and whatnot. And then after that kind
of died down, after all the crazy, my god, she's here, blah, blah, blah, after that kind of
died down. And everybody got used to the fact that she was there. I think they kind of
glided in nicely into the power couple role. So I do see them as a power couple. He's supporting
her from the sidelines all the time when she's on tour. And he's even joined her on stage.
So I think that that makes power couple and the visibility and things like that.
I think she's definitely the star of that relationship. Absolutely.
Hands down. But I'll say this, look, Travis Kelsey is amazing football player. So that's one thing.
I do think he's gotten more notoriety as a public figure because he's dating her obviously
or about to marry her. But I'll say this, he's a personality. Their podcast with him and his
brother is fantastic. Yeah, it's what I wish our podcast would be. I don't know how we can get it
there. They're just off the chart just they're giving others. That's true. I mean, different
scenario. That's true. I they can say whatever they want to each other and get away with it because
they live separate lives. I have to be a little more on guard because there's certain things that
you and I do together that I would like to continue to do together. So I have to be careful.
And that's why I can't go down that road of. No, no, that's not why it's because you respect me.
You respect your wife. You love your wife. You would never do or say anything to harm
her regardless of anything else. I think Travis Kelsey is a massive, massive catch for her.
Let me say I think that she is so fortunate that she found somebody who lives up to her
standard and who is along the same lines of her brand of crazy. Like they're both they're both
very outgoing. They both loves to have fun. They both are kooky, the goofy and the goofy together.
And it just works on so many levels. So I'm excited for both of them. I'm very happy for both of them.
Okay, we kind of diverted from the questions, but here's another question.
Why do you always got to stick me out like that? Because that's what I do. You could always ask me
questions, but you just don't seem to have those quick thoughts like I do. Here's my next question.
The first song that they dance to. Is it one of her songs? Yes, I know. I don't, I hope not.
It shouldn't be. Okay, another question. What kind of cake do they have?
Is it chocolate? Is it vanilla or is it a weird flavor? I don't think they have a cake.
What do you think they do? I don't know. But she's unique. So it's not going to be something that's
just run of the mail. I'm going to call it here. And when it happens, you can all say you heard
it here first. I think they have a cake. I think it's vanilla. I think it's big. And I think
that his brother Jason jumps out of it at some point. How about that? Okay, sure.
All right, Jen. Last question. Name me one famous person or a couple that you think is showing
up to that wedding. Selena and Benny. That's a good one. Well, that's obvious.
Anybody else? You can think. How do you said one? What about you? You know, you talk about it.
I'm going to say, let's see. Boy, you kind of took mine there.
Took you. There's a lot of celebrities. I know. All right, you ready for this?
I think she has crap. What's his name now? The singer there. The Irish singer that everybody loves.
He sings the barrel it. Thank you. I think Ed Sheridan shows up to that.
Ed's not Ed Sheridan, first of all, it's Ed Sheridan. And very well could be.
Well, thank you for correcting me on that on our podcast. No problem, honey. You can count on me.
Jen, do you know who is also trying to correct a wrong out in the sports card world today?
Who does? Well, it's the sponsor of our podcast. It's my card post.
My card post is a sponsor of this podcast, but it's also a great website.
It's a website where you could go and you can buy, you can sell, and you can trade sports cards,
TCG cards, memorabilia, all kinds of things. It's a big, buying, selling, trading platform.
Now, unlike all the other big platforms that are out there, guess what? My card post doesn't do.
What? You got to tell me. It doesn't take your money when you make a sale like the big platforms do.
The big platforms will take double digits of your sale and put it in their pocket and get
greedier and get richer. Those handles. My card post, all he asks, and it's just to keep the
lights on, and it's to keep the website up, is you pay a subscription every month to sell cards
on his website. And get this. Subscriptions, most of them are under $20 a month.
So, yes, you could sell thousands of dollars of sports card, and you could to keep thousands of
dollars, and you only have to pay $20 or less a month to do so. I'm telling you that just makes so
much more sense than all the others. It totally does. I don't know why anybody would go anywhere else.
I mean, think of it this way. Gas is not getting any cheaper. Milk is not getting any cheaper,
so we need to save money. And how we do this is by going on my card post and selling our valuable
sports cards on a site that doesn't take any of their money when you sell it. So, if you haven't
already, go check out my card post because the website will save you money, you'll have a lot of fun,
you'll meet some very interesting people, and then you'll get some really cool cards. So,
check out my card post, long running sponsor of the hockey and hot cat.
Jen, we all love music. We all love bands. We all love certain songs. But there's something that's
been bothering us lately. And what is that? I mean, we touched on it last week when we spoke about
Neil Diamond, which I still haven't forgiven you for the things you said about some of his lyrics are
some of his lyrics are a little you know, a little gross. But there are so many others out there
songs that have not aged well. And whether they be songs from the 50s, 60s, or even today,
just some bombs out there that probably should not see the light of day again.
Well, that's where we're going to go over in segment number two. We're going to take a look at some of
our favorite creepy lyrics songs. And you're worthy. We each pick three songs. So, as always,
let's go with ladies first. Jen, give us your first creepy lyrics song.
This is an old song. It came up before I was born. But it's something that I
heard a lot in my house as I was growing up because I had a lot of Beatles fans. And it is
a song by the name of your 16 by Ringo Star.
Did not age well. Let me tell you, it's pretty gross. Do you have an example of a lyric from that
song that maybe in 2026 kind of makes you? Well, the name I think in itself, it suggests that
you're 16. So, you know, he's he's saying you come on like a dream, peaches and cream,
lips like strawberry wine, you're 16, you're beautiful, and you're mine, mine all mine.
Oh, oh, and this is not when he is 16 as well. He is well into his late 20s.
Ick, Ick, Ick, major, Ick, major gross. And that's from a Beatles.
That's for he calls her, you're my baby, you're my pet.
Yeah, 16. Oh, was that song written when he was with the Beatles or when he was on his solo?
I believe he was solo with that song, right? It was a solo song. I don't know whether or not he
was 73. I don't know when. Yeah, Beatles were done by thens.
Yeah, so he said, ooh, ooh, when we kissed, I could not stop.
The reason why I brought that up is because if he was still in the Beatles, don't you think the
other three Beatles would look at him and be like, Ringo, no, no, no, no, no, no, because there's
a bunch of tunes by the Beatles that are just very cringe as well.
Okay. Yeah. All right, that's a good one to kick us off with. So I see your 16-year-old song,
and I'm a raise you another 16-year-old song. You're ready for this one. Sure.
This is a song that I have to admit before I really looked into the lyrics, I really like because
it's a very catchy song, and this singer reminds me a little bit of like a Steve Perry type of
singer. He has that kind of vocal range that it's impressive. The singer I'm talking about is
Benny Mardone, okay? Not many people know him. He would be considered a one-hit wonder. Okay.
And unfortunately his hit song is the song that we're going to talk about. Benny Mardone is
releases a song in 1980 called Into the Night. All right? Yes. Yes. Now just from that title,
not bad, right? Right. You listen to the song. It's got a very catchy little kind of Caribbean intro,
very nice, very relaxing, very easy to listen to. I think I actually have it on one of my playlists.
Oh, I have it on a couple. So yes. Now here's where it falls apart for me. Here's the first verse
and then the chorus. So I'm going to read you the actual lyrics. You ready? Okay. Go for it.
He just comes out hot. His first lyric is, she's just 16 years old.
Leave her alone. They say. Okay. So we're not starting off well. Well, it doesn't get any better.
Then he proceeds to say separated by fools who don't know what love is yet, but I want you to know.
Not good. It's getting worse. We're talking about. He's talking about someone who's 16 years old.
He then jumps into the chorus where he said, if I could fly, I'd pick you up and I take you into
the night and show you love like you've never, ever seen. And do we know how old he was when he sang
this or wrote this or when this came out? He was in his late 20s, early 30s. Rose.
Here's the thing that gets me. So he writes this song. Okay. And one day he goes into the studio
and hands out. Here you go, guys. This is the song we're going to record. Now if you're like,
say, the bass player in this session, right? And you're starting to play the cool groove and
he belts out those lyrics just the very first sentence battle. Aren't you stopping and going, whoa,
whoa, whoa, wait a minute. What are we talking about here? 16 years old and dude, you're almost 30.
And he says it in there. He acknowledges she's just 16 years old. So he's acknowledging the fact
that she's a baby. He even mentions later on the song that, and this is another lyric, I would wait
till the end of time for you. So he's basically might even be saying, look, you're not there yet, but
I'll wait till you're legal, but it doesn't have that vibe. It feels like
he's not first lyric where he's like, he talks about you just don't understand. Yeah.
So we just started this discussion off with two 16-year-old songs. So gross. And they're both
very gross. So you had Ringo Star. I have Benny Mardonez, which people don't take our word for it.
Go check out these songs and really listen to the lyrics. All right, Jen,
give me your next song of creepy lyrics songs that we love. Okay, so the next one that I have
is not out now creepy. I mean, it is to a to a degree. And it's 8, 6, 7, 5, 3,
9, Jenny by Tommy Tuton. And that was it. Wonder. Yep. And that was in 1981. So we're coming closer to
current times. We're not much closer, but we're a little really 80s. Benny was in the 80s.
This one's in the 80s too. Okay. So the lyrics, Jenny, Jenny, who can I turn to? You give me
something I can hold on to. I know you think I'm like the others before who saw your name and
number on the wall. And then he's saying, I need to make you mine. So it's creepy enough that he
saw her number on a wall. And from this, and I mean, on the wall, that's pretty much in the men's
bathroom in the stall probably. Yeah. And that's that's gross enough to begin with. But then you
throw into it the fact that for some reason, he is infatuated with her to the point where he needs to
make her mine. That's kind of it. And then when you hear Tommy Tuton talk about it,
he explains that the song is about a stalker who finds a girl's name and number on a bathroom wall
and it becomes obsessed with her. That is just freakish kind of stuff. And yeah,
that's given me the heebie jeebies. There are tons and tons and tons of honorable mentions.
But these are the ones that just stood out to me. So Tommy Tuton, 8675309, everybody knows this song,
even if you're a young person, you got to know this song because it's just everywhere.
It's creepy. The two things about that song that always amazed me. Number one is, and I've read
things about this as to how many people actually back in the day when we all had phones hanging on
the wall called that number. And in the very beginning, apparently people had that number in
real life in different places. And it would just get them parted with phone calls for just people
trying to check that out. So there's that. The other part of that song that kind of always,
I guess, mess with my mind is there's a lyric in that song where it said,
I got your number off the wall and goes, I got it. I got it. And he says, for a good time,
for a good time calls. And that's pretty much that it had to be what was written above
her number on there. That's it.
Just to give some of the younger people out there a little kind of reference here.
For cyber bullying. You think younger people are listening to us here?
Yeah, I think there's one or two that yeah, I don't know about that.
I don't know about that. And like, hey, check out these old Fogies.
So before cyber bullying was a thing, right? Before you could just totally break someone down
from your house while they were at home. The way that you would, I guess you could say,
try to change people or whatever it was, you'd go into the stall of a bar or the gym,
you know, your high school, the locker room, that type of thing. And you would write in marker
on the wall. Some girl that's slighted you, you know, maybe you asked her out and she laughed
that you or she said, no. And you would say, hey, for a good time call this number or, hey,
this girl or this guy is easy. That's how we cyber bullied back in the day.
And speaking to the misogyny that we talked about last week, this is also one of those because
you go into the girls room when I was younger, you go into the women's bathroom or the girls'
bathroom, wherever. And there's all these sweet things like a heart with a person's initials
in the middle and like Jenny loves Jay and all that kind of stuff, all this sweet stuff. We
never did any of this kind of stuff where people are bad enough for a good time call. I mean, now.
Unfortunately, I have to disagree with you in the school that I went to, which is, I hate to say,
it is not as ghetto as the school you went to. And you're, and I'm not saying this
specific slate. Okay. There was actually a case in my school where the girls wrote things about
another girl in the bathroom and another girl. Well, wait a minute. I'm not writing it about the
guys. Well, wait a minute, that way. It was so bad, so bad that they, they would, when it first
happened, you know, they went in, they take it down, wash it, paint it, whatever kept happening.
Got so bad that the girl they were referencing to literally had a mental breakdown and had to leave
the school. So there was that. Then like the next year when I was a junior, there was a boy
that something happened. He wronged one of the girls. I don't know the full story. And they
started writing things about him in there too, that eventually would get back to him. And I hate
to say that it did affect him too. He didn't even end up graduating from that school. He had to go
be home school. So it does work both ways, granted. I don't know if I believe you. Well, go ahead.
Because I don't even know if you checked me. I'm not waiting to fact check to check. Well,
then there was not even any homeschooling back in the day when we were there was what are you there
for? He's not not the kind of. There totally was. Okay. Totally was. Do your research. Totally.
What? Okay. Let's move on. You talked about stalker songs, Jen. All right. I see your Tommy
Tutone. And I raise you the ultimate stalker song of all time. That was a number one hit. Yes.
And that is by the police. And that song is every breath you take.
This song was released in 1983. There have been people that have said is their favorite song of
all times. They have played this song at their wedding at their anniversary. You name it. This song
has been played. Very catchy song. Do you like this song? I do. I love this song. Great song,
right? Ding wrote a great song. Here's the funny part is this song that's frequently mistaken for
a romantic ballad is a song that was actually written from the perspective of a stalker.
And it's a stalker who's basically constantly surveying their former partner. So they're basically
watching this person. When you now look at those lyrics from that slant, this song gets very dark
very quick. Yes, it is. And that is something that has been talked about a lot. And he has come out
and he's like, why are people using this at their wedding? He's like, stop doing that.
It's not a romantic tune. The way it comes across, it doesn't come across as being stalkerish.
But when you break it down, yeah, it's pretty stinking stalkerish very much. So when you look at it
through those glasses, right? Now the song itself has a very melodic, catchy musical side to it.
The words every breath you take, very romantic you would think, but no, it's not the case.
And what I love, and this is as a musician one of the things I love when I write, I always like
writing like this is from this slant. I love when songs are presented in a way where
majority of the public can look at and say, oh, this is sweet. It means this, this, this, and this.
But the reality is it has, it was written from a dark slant. That's it. And I love songs like
that. I'll give you another perfect example, right? Third, I blind semi-charmed kind of life. Great
song. But that song is about doing heroin. And I've been to countless weddings, countless gatherings
for that song is played. And everyone's just having a grand old time. And they're talking about
bump in heroin. Right. But you know what? That's why I appreciate the artists who don't come out
and say what the song is about. Because then you can take it and do with it. What you make it,
make it your own. What you are getting out of it, you know, stink came out and said that about
his song, that song. And it ruins it for a lot of people, including me. I was like,
man, that's just not right. So I can really appreciate the people, the artists who
keep their mouth closed about what their true intention was with the song. And they just let
the audience take it and do as they wish. I agree. I think that even if you wait for time,
like let a lot of time go by and then you kind of explain it, it does take away from the song.
So like you said, just let it be and just say I wrote this for whatever the reason may be.
And I leave it up to the public to interpret it how they want. So I know what the reality is,
but I'm not going to share that with you. Our first songs were were age, Ick. Okay.
Our second, our second songs were both stalkery, Ick. What do you think our third songs are
going to be? Why don't you lead us off with our third and final song? Okay.
Well, this may not have the same kind of Ick that we were talking about. And it's actually
by very well known artist, Lionel Richie. I love Lionel Richie. Don't ruin it. It's not going to
ruin it too much because it's not like you. And it's the song Hello. Now you know the song Hello.
It's a massive, massive song. Is it me you're looking for? Exactly. If you remember, you may not
remember what the video was like. I remember that video vividly. What do you remember about the
video that stood out the most? The most. It was a terrible video first and foremost,
but what I remember the most is the fact that I believe the girl in the video was blind.
And that Lionel Richie was a teacher, I believe. Yes. And she never knew his face, but she sculpted
his face at a clay. Yes. If I'm not mistaken. Right. Okay. Now given the fact that she's blind,
he goes on and and he's a teacher and all these things. Hello. Is it me you're looking for?
I mean, it's just a kind of
you know, because if she can't see him, then this is all going she's she's not able to know whether or
not he's there. She's in a crowd of students. So in my mind, he's looking at her and putting what
he thinks she was thinking about him and she can't even see that he's there. So he's putting all
of this feeling stuff on his student that are you looking for me? Am I the one? She may not even
know that he exists. I mean, and then to boot, you said she does the clay about him.
Exactly. How does she know what he looks like? In the video, there's one point where she actually
touches his face. Right. She's a student. But I will say this, that video, I think they portrayed it
that this was college. It had that feeling of college. Well, a college compared to 16 year olds.
No, I know. It's a little bit blind as well. And people deserve love to it. That's not what I'm
saying. Don't even try to go there. I'm just saying it seems like he's taking advantage of a
situation. And that to me is, I don't know. I don't know that one. I don't know if that sits well
with me because it's Lionel Richie and who doesn't love him. Lionel Richie is gross, grosses all
of them. Let me tell you, Jen, can I share with you my favorite Lionel Richie story that I've
ever heard? I know which Lionel Richie's to this story is going to be. I know it. It's such a good
one. All right. You and I were at a, I believe it was either Rob Thomas or matchbox
20 concert, not Rob Thomas, the NHL player who didn't get traded, but the singer.
And he was telling us about the time he met Lionel Richie.
He went up to Lionel Richie and proceeded to tell him a story. He told Lionel Richie, this is
Rob Thomas, that when he was in high school, he was an awkward kid. So he would go to parties and
he would hope that there was like a piano there. And the couple of parties he would go to,
there'd be a piano that was in the house that he would proceed to sit down at and pull out a
song book and play Lionel Richie songs on the piano while he would sing to the party, which
garnished him attention, which the ladies fell in love with. So basically he ends up saying to
Lionel Richie, thank you. You helped me have sex in high school because I was able to play your
songs on the piano. I was supposed to be saying that. Come on. It's 2026. Everybody knows what
family friendly. The internet's dirtier than we are. Now here's the funny part is Lionel Richie
listens to that. And at the end looks at Rob Thomas and goes, you're welcome. The same happened
to me too, meaning Lionel Richie had a lot of sex because he played songs on the piano all the
time too. So that's why I love Lionel Richie. He's just a cool dude. I don't like new Lionel Richie
with the makeover and the pull back face and all that. Give me old Lionel Richie dancing on the
ceiling. I mean, come on. But anyway, I digress. So, Jen, that's a, okay, that's a good third one.
I'm going to end with a song. This pains me because I love this song when it first came out.
It's such a pucky, great song. It just makes you want to dance. But there's a lot of problems with
it. Unfortunately, the song I'm talking about is blurred lines. Jen, you know the song I'm talking
about? Yeah, you already said it. Yeah, but you know the song. Yeah, I know the song. Okay, everybody
get up. Great, great, bouncy tune. Yeah. Nowadays, especially more recently, to be criticized for the
lyrics and the meaning to the song. Unfortunately, this song has been pointed out to promote
rape culture, misogyny, and non-consexual, sexual advances. Now, when this was brought to
thick and Williams attention and they were asked the question about that, they would defend this song
and argue that this song's more about good girls embracing their inner bad side.
And the lyrics really became a lightning rod for criticism over the concept of consent
and the objectification of women. All of this from a catchy pop song. So I dug a little bit
and you know what? Good. Yes. You know what, Jen? Let's see. Okay, here we go.
The first thing that stands out to you when this song is the phrase, no, you want it,
is repeated consistently throughout the song. Many have said that this repeated phrase is the
focal point of the controversy with critics arguing that it dismisses a woman's lack of consent
and assumes her body dictates her desires and her way of dress, regardless of what she says.
So again, that idea that asking for a type of thing, regardless of what they say,
that's number one. Then the idea of blurred lines of consent, the fact that the song implies
that a woman's flirting or her clothing or simply just being a good girl having a bad moment
means she wants to always engage in sexual acts, regardless of her actual verbalized consent
in the situation. So there's that. Then there's a line in there that says, do it, like it hurt.
Now these lyrics, particularly in the unedited version, which is pretty, if you would,
has been very criticized for normalizing the association of sexual violence with pleasure
when it comes to women nowadays. Then the version that has TI's wrap in it,
TI's wrap added the controversy with lines basically that some, I guess you could say aggressive
or violent lyrics in his wrap, which is contributing to the overall sexual misconduct vibe
that this song is putting out. Then the cherry on top is the music video. Now music videos aren't
as popular today as they were back in the early and mid 2000s, but this video really I think
tries the point home. The music video, there's two versions, there's an edited and an unedited
version. One featured male singers all fully clothed, but the women in the unedited version were
all topless and naked. So okay, that's not a good thing. That adds a lot more criticism of the
song as being more demeaning and objectifying. So like you've always said, why does the women
have to be naked and the men are all sitting there dressed on there just creepily looking at these
women? So with all of that, Jim, this is why I put this song on my list, even though it pains me
to because, as I said, very catchy song, but unfortunately catchy songs can be disgusting too.
Just to further emphasize it, I don't know if you remember or not, but during 2013,
I mean MTV Video Music Award, he performed it with Miley Cyrus and Miley at the time was in her
trying to get out of her role as Hannah Montana and it was an overly sexualized performance.
She has said that she felt sexualized after the performance and that it became an expectation
from that point forward of the way that she was going to act and she also said that she's at
peace with it now and she knows it's somebody who is not who she is anymore.
But the way that it all went up because I believe he was either married or in a very serious
relationship at the time and I don't know if you remember this award show or not, but she was just
disgusting. It was pretty, pretty vile. He says his take on things. He says he claims that he was
aware that Miley was going to do all of this stuff and he felt that it was the goal to provoke
and excite. He found it to be silly and funny. So it's interesting the way the two people
that were involved in it with his song saw the whole thing and the outcomes of it.
hers went toward negativity. He felt it was just silly. It's just overall the song is kind of
you know, blah, blah. We should caveat all this by saying to that all of these songs were done
a long time ago. The world was a different place unfortunately back in the day. That's before
the conversation started. Yes. Thankfully, the conversation is ongoing. Right. But again,
this was in a time period where unfortunately a lot of these things were more acceptable. Even
some of those gross early songs from the 70s and 80s. Well, and there are a lot of tunes. There
are a lot of songs out there. Tons of them that specifically come at you with this kind of
feeling or this kind of lyrics specifically to upset you.
There's all kinds of crazy, crazy stuff out there. But these songs were just talking about them
because they were not meant in that way at the time that they were published. But now that we're
in 2026, they tend to look a little bit different now. There are songs that have always pushed the
limits. I think these songs potentially could have been written with this stuff in mind because as I
said back then, this was just more, I hate to use the word accepted, just wasn't bought against,
you know, again, the conversation didn't start. I think it comes from a place of misogyny and
or creepiness. But at the same time, I do agree with you in the idea that there's no such thing as
bad press. Oh, I think that things where people were much more naive to back in the day. And when
I say back in the day, I'm talking about the stuff that came out like in the 70s and things.
It was not the way that it is now. I mean, things have just taken a nose dive now.
But at least the conversations ongoing. Yes. We're bringing it more to the public. There are people
not getting away with stuff like they did back in the day. Right. That's a good thing. But we
as a podcast, as a hockey podcast and we just thought it'd be interesting to talk about creepy lyric
songs that everybody loves and that we're hits. That's because of Neil Diamond. Thanks, Neil Diamond
for your. Neil Diamond has nothing to do with this. Hey, Neil Diamond. Neil Diamond does talk about
some of this stuff too. I left him out of it this time because you nearly had a connection
last week, but you know, I mean, he's he's he's got some pretty creepy lyrics too.
Well, Jen, if you keep bringing up Neil Diamond, you'll be a woman soon. You keep bringing up
Neil Diamond. One of these days, our love will be on the rocks too. Okay. Okay. Yes, Mike drop.
All right, Jen. I think we've covered the creepy lyrics songs pretty well. I thought they're
there. They were some big hits on there. But I think we're bringing a service to the people to say,
look, listen to the lyrics and that's just to the fact that the song makes you feel good. But
listen to the words and maybe every so often kind of takes stock in some of the songs for listening.
Hey, back in the day, listening to those songs. I didn't think anything of any of this stuff.
You know, Winger, she's on our 17. That almost made my list. That was like number four. Yeah, I
mean, none of that stuff. It didn't bother me back in the day when it came out. It didn't even
occur to me. I loved that song. But in hindsight, now it's like, yeah, that's not legal. So yeah.
I think when you're a kid, listen to these songs, you can't appreciate it because you're a kid,
yeah, you're dumb. You just don't get when you become a parent or an adult, then you kind of see
the force through the trees. If you would, yes, yes, you do. Then you wish you could go backward and
not know. Well, I wish I could go backward and tell Lionel Richie that thanks to him. I also got
a lot of nook, nook at parties because of him, just like Rob Thomas. Jen, that's the end of our
episode. You're so gross. You're going to put me on a list then next week. You should be on all
kinds of lists. We might have to come up with one. So, Jen, that's the end of our episode. And
as always, we want to thank the people, the few people, as you mentioned, the few young people
who actually listen to our podcast. I seriously doubt if we have anybody under 25 listening to us
under 30 even that could be true. But regardless, we want to thank everyone who does listen to our
podcast and say, as always, if you could share it with people, give us a like, give us a follow,
give us a subscribe. If you do all that, gets it out there to more people. If you missed one of our
old episodes, go check us out on platforms like Spotify and Apple podcast along with YouTube.
And if you have any suggestions for us as far as topics or things you'd like to hear,
let us know on our Instagram page at hockey and podcast on Instagram. Now, if you also maybe
disagree with our list or maybe there's other creepy songs that you like or that are hits that
you want us to know about, put it on our Instagram page so we can all have that discussion about more
creepy songs. And we can really draw out in the light these songs that were hits at one time,
but are now a little bit different in 2026. All right, Jen, that's the end of our show. Do you have
anything you want to add before we close things out? No, I got nothing. I got nothing to say.
So you take it from here. I'm going to end the show like I started the show with the really weird,
radio kind of viby outro. You ready? Okay. All right, here we go. I'm scared.
So that's the show people. Hockey and podcast, we want to thank you for tuning in and remember folks,
keep your passes, Chris, your chirps spicy and always aim top shelf where mom keeps the cookie jar.
And if you write a hit song, creepy lyrics can be a hit for you as we've learned.
So for the hockey and podcast, I'm your host, Jay. That's Jennifer who's holding her hands over
her eyes. And we're just saying thank you for tuning in and we'll see you next time people. So I do.
