We've got a question from Anthony.

My name is Anthony, I live in South Western Pennsylvania.

I want to know if you can paralyze garlic and if you can, what do you use and when do you

pull it on?

My garden has been kind of weak lately and what fertilizer do you fertilize green beans

with?

I've had a lot of trouble with them the last year or two.

I listen to you share it all the time.

Okay.

So with the garlic, you can do two things.

You can use a compost tea.

You can use compost, side dress, the plants at right now and then as you water, which typically

you won't need to because springs are typically wet.

That water will percolate through the compost and feed the soil, which will feed the plant.

You can go a liquid fertilizer, organic or inorganic and water it that way as well to supplement

the nutrients that is required or you feel is needed for your garlic.

On the green beans, work the soil, ag compost, good rotted, commoner, chemical-free seed-free

grass clippings, whatever material, whatever it is, make sure it was derived from a safe source.

And then work that in the soil and then you can add some granular organic fertilizer.

You can use ivy organics fertilizer.

You can use a organic fertilizer that has the three numbers on the bag less than 10-10-10.

You can go up as high as 10-10-10, but a 5-8-3, whatever that is, to add a little bit

of granular fertilizer or some nutrient help there and water regularly and you should

see very different results as you did from past years.

All right, we will continue on with questions and answers.

All right, I have made an ignorant choice on sweet corn.

Does this mean I'll only get literally one year of corn per stock?

I've never grown corn before.

So yes, not that you made an ignorant choice.

Corn takes, and most times you're going to get one year, if everything goes right, one nice year,

and sometimes one subpar year on the plant.

Lottie energy input to get that green plant to grow 5, 8, 10-foot tall in order to put that year on.

We have done it.

We put a lot of energy fertilizer, time, moisture, water into the garden bed in order to do such.

Just search for sweet growing sweet corn.

It can be done.

I think it's much more beneficial if you're going to do it on a large scale.

Yes, small scale, buy it from your farmer's market, but it certainly can be done.

There are also a variety in which you can grow in containers on your patio porch or deck.

So your mileage may vary and it's up to your decision whether you feel it's something

you want to go forward with.

All right, we got a canning question.

Go ahead with that one.

I did a water bath canning two years ago when I was just learning and following Amish,

Men and I, YouTube videos, and all jars sealed, both meat, dairy, et cetera.

Then I invested in a Presto 23 court induction stove pressure canner.

What I am finding is that jar sealing seems less effective with the pressure canner,

even though I'm using new jars, new lives, new rings.

I tried canning salmon, stew, beef, meat, and several jars did not seal.

However, I'm wondering if the oiliness of the fish and meat is siphoned

from the jars when I turn off the heat and move the canner to another cool burner.

Should I just let it slowly release the heat and shut off the burner?

It's a glass top electric stove.

I'm considering returning the water bath canner,

returning to water bath canner only,

rebel canning in some cases for the meat fish.

First of all, I'm not going to condone canning meat fish with a water bath canner

at all, ever, or dairy, or anything that's not a fruit or a pickled vegetable

with sugar added, I only practice safe canning, but for this,

I would think that you would want to just,

I would just leave the canner where it is.

I don't know why you're moving into a cooler burner.

I would just leave it where it shut the stove off.

This is if you're doing it correctly in a pressure canner.

Yeah, yeah.

You just shut the stove off and let it do its thing.

You don't let it depressurize with that weight or day.

You don't need to move it.

I'm assuming it's probably depressurizing too fast.

When you move it, I'm assuming it's not getting hot enough with that water bath can.

No, she's talking about the pressure here.

Right, right.

Okay, yeah, they're not sealing your depressurizing it too quick.

Yeah, so I would just, yeah, you just would want to turn off the the as much as you

want to lift that weight in here, don't turn off the burner and let it do its thing

naturally.

Let it come back up to, I guess, down, whatever, down, down, down, down, down to room temperature

so that the seal can then be safely, or the lid can be safely removed.

You don't want to move it to a cooler burner.

When it comes to canning, when you're letting stuff do their thing in the canner, whether

it be water bath canning or pressure canning, don't move the canner.

You want to have a little movement as possible with the canner itself and then you move

the jars.

So don't move the canner.

Can you get free soil to fill raised beds with our, I know that some cities have piles

and then I could just add other things like nutrients and fertilizer to that soil.

Well, this is definitely your mileage, mileage would vary and kind of use it your own risk.

The reason being, yes, there are some municipalities that have a yard in which you can, in the

fall, go dump your stuff or they pick it up on the street and then they go compost it

and then in the spring, either for a small fee or you can go and pick it up and bring it

back and fill whatever containers you want.

Here's the problem.

You may be a wonderful gardener.

You may keep diseases at a bay.

You may see this, that other gardeners could care less and they just throw all their

diseased plants in a pile and it gets composted up at the city yard and then some diseases

if kept warm enough over winter, they will still be active and you're bringing that trash

into your garden in a black composted form, chemical seed free grass, like a weeding feed

in your grass clippings, people just take the yard and dump them and then they get composted

and that herbicide that broadly, chemical is in the compost and your tomatoes, your peppers,

your plant, your potatoes are all deformed and you can't forget what happened.

But you got this free soil and you don't know who or what was put in it and now you're

adding it into your garden or your garden causing massive amounts of problems.

Okay, yeah, definitely.

Another question is, I'm a newbie.

What is the difference between garden soil and compost?

Do you need both in both in a vegetable garden?

You do not need both in a vegetable garden.

If you have both, it's not a problem.

If you have a combination, that's not an issue, you're not going to cause any problems.

Soil is generally a mixture of organic matter and then something like a perlite herb

or muculite.

Right, a nutrient mixture, it's got top soil and organic matter, manure or bark that

has been broke down, minerals specific to aim to improve existing soil.

And then it often will sometimes have a solar release fertilizer, too.

It depends on the manufacturer or the yard that makes it, yes.

Yes.

Compost is compost, so it's all organic matter.

There's typically nothing added to it, it's just compost.

And if you are building a raised bed or you're looking for soil for containers, you've

got a raised bed mix or a container mix.

We've grown in complete compost.

When we built our raised beds, which is what we predominantly grow in, we had the choice.

There was a compost or a raised bed mix and the compost was like $5 cheaper a yard.

And it was perfectly fine.

There was nothing, there was a very trusted yard, a trusted business, a great reputation.

We had it brought in, we hauled it over, filled the raised beds and nothing bad has happened.

And the only difference is that with a raised bed mix, again, they're adding some stuff

to it.

With the compost, yeah, there's a little sand, there's a little clay, there's a little

bit of this or that and everything because it's not a potting mix, but it is a mixture

that will be very good for your garden beds.
