Episode 18 : Fred Jollien

In this episode, I meet Fred Jollien, a passionate Bitcoiner from Switzerland, to explore his personal journey into the world of Bitcoin. Fred sold me his ticket to Bitcoin Prague because he's expecting his first born child and can no longer make it - a random connection that has resulted in yet another great connection for me within the Bitcoin space.

We reflect on his early memories of money and the unique tax landscape in Switzerland that affects Bitcoin holders. Fred shares his perspective on Bitcoin adoption in wealthy nations, the gradual shift in awareness, and how he distinguishes Bitcoin from the broader crypto space.

We discuss the cult-like behavior in communities—whether it’s Bitcoiners or football fans—and how changing minds can be an uphill battle. We also explore the practical realities of living on a Bitcoin standard, including the impact of volatility.

Fred stresses the importance of self-custody, planning for the future, and even touches on the growing Bitcoin scene in Prague. Hopefully he'll be back at Prague in 2026 and I'll get to meet him face to face!
