So, it's just, it's like nothing I've ever seen before.
It has so many different pieces to it.
I mean, it had very traditional looking altar pieces
and then it had this very modern sculpture
telling stories of the disciples and Jesus.
It was really, really cool.
Welcome, travellers, to elevated escapes.

Now, your hosts.
Welcome to episode number two of the elevated escapes podcast
being recorded in sunny Sarasota, Florida.
I'm your host, Mike, joined by my wife and co-host, Kristen.
Hello.
Hi, Kristen.
Hi.
I'm not used to calling you that.
That's true.
For those of you new to the show,
her middle name is Suzanne.
So we call her Susie.
Do you rather be called Susie on the show or?
Christian.
I like them both.
You can call me whatever you'd like.
Okay.
I like Susie personally.
Okay.
That's what we refer to you on our other podcast,
our WDW Beyond the Gates podcast,
and addicted to DBC podcasts.
When you join us on those shows,
so I'd like to refer to you as Susie.
Susie is fine.
Okay.
So we got that cleared up.
Speaking of Susie, I left you in charge of this podcast.
What are we going to be talking about?
We are going to talk about the adventures by Disney Barcelona escape
that we did a couple of years ago.
Hmm.
How does that sound?
That'll work.
I'm fine with that.
Okay.
So as we opened last week,
I'm a Disney nerd.
Susie is not so much a Disney nerd.
In a couple of years ago,
we went on a Disney Vacation Club Mediterranean cruise
where we started in Barcelona.
And we went over to Italy and did a few ports in Italy.
And what adventures by Disney does
is they do what is called an escape
where they do a shorter adventures by Disney,
usually around cruising, right?
Typically around cruising.
But what is adventures by Disney
for those of our listeners who may not know?
It's just a high end.
What is it?
Just a high end tour, isn't it?
It's a guided tour.
Yeah.
Um.
And it would.
It could compromise for us,
because Mike's got the, you know,
a built-in Disney service and the Disney train guides.
Um, and it was a good way for me to get him to do something
a little outside his comfort zone.
Because here's the thing with me.
I'm very simple as you're going to learn.
Um, I like to know where I'm going when I'm going.
Uh, I'm terrified of not understanding the native language.
Um, luckily in Barcelona,
they did speak a lot of English.
But if I'm going, I'm not one who's going to jump on a subway
or get an Uber or taxi and just be dropped off somewhere.
And that's like one of my biggest fears is not being able to get around.
So adventures by Disney,
they're going to hold your hand.
Every step of the way.
I mean, they early on.
Um, we did a pre-call.
They told us I had to give them all of our flight information.
We were leaving from Miami flying direct over to Barcelona.
They were going to have somebody.
Meet us at pretty much at the gate.
We, what do we do?
We came through customs.
And there was a young kid there.
Um, meeting us.
And then he brought us down to baggage claim.
And he grabbed our bags.
And it's really nice too.
I mean, we'll back one.
But um, they give you these bag tags to identify your bag.
So it's this big orange thing that says adventures by Disney.
And it wraps around your bag.
So when it's coming off the conveyor belt.
If you're not there.
If you're just getting through customs.
That kid will be there to pick up the bag.
Cause it, it signals that it's adventures by Disney.
So.
Yeah.
So then, you know, he took us out.
Into the arrivals.
Area in our one of our adventure guides met us there with our driver.
Who brought us directly to the hotel, which was really nice.
Do you remember who our adventure's guide was?
Yes, her name was Rafi.
Rafi.
Rafiella.
You roll the D though, right?
Don't you say Rafi?
Rafi?
You do, I don't.
Rafi.
I don't have that skill.
Yeah.
Learned that from, uh, Mr. Randall.
Oh, well, I told him.
Spanish class.
But it is.
I have, I have a really big desire to explore.
And I want to get out into cities and see things.
And Mike is a little more trepidacious than I am, I guess,
when it comes to jumping right in and trying to navigate, you know, a city that's.
Not necessarily catering to our native language, although it is widely spoken.
That was a big boy word too that you just used.
Which one?
Trepidate.
Oh, trepidation.
Yes.
That's one of those Ivy League words.
Sorry.
The word that came into my head.
Oh, that's okay.
Just a little bit over my head.
Nervous.
Is that better?
Yes.
Okay.
I know exactly, I know what it means.
I just, that's not just a word that I use.
It's not what comes into your head.
That is correct.
That is correct.
Yeah.
So he, he drove us.
He gave, he was good.
He's, he spoke pretty good English.
Yeah, pretty good.
And he was to, because I was watching actually an old video.
And he was showing us as we were getting into the city in old bullfighting ring.
There were, there was were all over.
Don't you remember all over Barcelona?
Yeah, a bunch of arenas.
So anyway, so he, he dropped us off.
And then we were there and we were met by our other adventures by Disney guide.
His name was Marco.
He was fantastic.
We're the, we're the first ones in, weren't we?
They said we're, yeah, because we flew.
We did a red eye.
We left Miami at four, four 30 in the afternoon, which would have been, you know,
right around 10, 30, 11 or so.
Barcelona time.
And we got into Barcelona.
What a seven or so.
Yeah, right.
Son was coming up as we were.
Coming into Barcelona.
So we were the first ones there.
Marco checked us in.
Kind of just went over a bunch of questions.
Right?
Pretty much went over what did a lot of dinner prep.
Did you want me to fish?
It's like you're going to a wedding.
Do you want me to fish here?
Do you want this?
Do you have any allergies?
I think he asked us if we drank.
If we preferred beer or wine.
He did ask that.
Yeah.
And then after that, we were pretty much on our own.
He was given us lunch recommendations and places to go in downtown Barcelona.
What does do you remember where we were?
We were in the center.
Yeah.
Because the hotel.
We were at hotel bar.
What was it?
Hotel Barcelona Center.
Center.
It was called center.
So he gave us some recommendations.
We started walking around.
Remember we got lost.
Yeah.
We didn't realize it was our, you know, both of our first times in Europe.
And we didn't realize that they put the street names on the buildings.
So the corners of the buildings are where you you find the street names.
So we had no idea where we were or where we were going.
We just knew we took two rights and a left.
And then it got to a point where we're not going to be able to get back to the hotel
if we don't turn around and go back.
So we ended up not eating.
Not eating.
Our room was not ready.
And remember we're sitting in that area.
We're trying to take a nap.
We sat for a while.
Marco did have some snacks though, which was nice.
He did have some snacks.
And then people were getting there after us.
And they were getting their room before us.
So we just went into Marco and said, Hey, is there anything you can do?
We've been sitting down here for hours.
And he went to what do you he went to the desk and said, Hey, these guys have been here the longest.
Yes.
You were told.
Rafi told us when we arrived at the airport that they had made arrangements for us to get early check in.
Which didn't really happen.
It did not happen.
So again, you know, with everything.
They're going to be.
Moments that are less than perfect.
But having somebody to kind of advocate on our behalf was really.
He was he was definitely advocating on our.
Be half.
So we went up to the room.
Kind of closed our eyes for a little while.
Because then we had a welcome reception right downstairs in the lobby.
Yep.
We had some tapas.
Some kava.
It was lovely.
We all introduced ourselves.
That's your favorite part, isn't it?
The introductions.
No.
Yeah, the introduction.
But then didn't we have to say something about Disney?
Like our favorite Disney moment?
Or did we have to give like a Disney twist and you just kind of rolled your eyes?
Maybe.
Because you didn't want to talk.
You didn't want to.
I think I might have done the introduction.
I did that.
You said will you do the introduction?
And I took over.
So what did they do?
It was just basically a little presentation about what to expect over the next few days, right?
Right.
Yeah, it's kind of a little mixer.
I mean, we didn't really get to.
That's right.
Yeah.
Quite as much.
Because, you know, it was.
A small room.
And they were, you know, just trying to get us all to.
We were, we were, we were from.
And then we got on a bus and headed to dinner.
And do you remember where we went?
I can't pronounce it, but it's the chalet.
Demons week.
That was a beautiful bus ride to.
I mean, you're going through the mountains.
And as we're.
And while you're on the bus, both Rafi and Marco.
We would tell you about all the buildings.
And this is a financial district.
And this is the XYZ district.
And then as we were getting closer to the restaurant,
um, Rafi was talking about where the Olympics.
All these when Barcelona hosted the 1992 US Olympics team.
That was.
Summer Olympics.
Summer Olympics.
The US Olympics.
I'm sorry.
The summer Olympics.
I'm thinking about the US was the 1992 dream team.
Hmm.
Men's basketball team.
Larry Bird.
Magic Johnson.
Remember who else played on that team?
Christian Laitner.
Christian Laitner.
Because they did.
They had a few.
They had a few hot college players.
Christian Laitner.
I believe.
Mike Shoshewski was one of the coaches.
I'd have been chucked daily the old the basketball coach of the Detroit
Pistons.
But later was one of the college players.
I'm right about to.
Barkley was on that team.
John Stockton was on that team.
Carmel Lone was on that team.
Michael Jordan.
I mean, you talked to dream team.
I mean, that team was absolutely loaded and they dominated the Olympics.
But you digress.
I digress.
I get a little excited there.
Yes.
Just a little bit.
And then remember when we were having when we were taking our pictures.
Um, we're.
I mean, it was beautiful.
We'll post some pictures on our social.
Uh,
The restaurant was basically at the top of the mountain.
And it overlooked all of downtown Barcelona.
It was absolutely gorgeous.
Yes.
Yeah, that's the swimming.
Yeah, that's the swimming.
But yeah, you could see the.
That's a grotto familiar.
Yeah, it was the stunning view.
And the food was amazing.
The food was amazing.
I don't remember what we had.
But it was.
We had so much, a lot of local flair.
It was, I mean, obviously you're in Spain, so it was tapest.
And they were just bringing.
have to play it. And if you want more, do you want more to drink? Do you want more
sangry? Do you want more wine? I mean, it was fish and croquettes and charcootery and
all kinds of stuff. It was phenomenal. Yeah, it was. I was one of my most memorable
parts of the adventures. Because it's, you're a little socially awkward because this is
your first time in front of all these strangers. Right. And you're sitting at a table. What
were their aid of us or so? Us too. I think there were 11 of us. Marcos sat with us.
Of 12. That's right. The family from Maryland. Yep. And then we had the three couples. That's
right. We had a husband, wife, and then his parents. No, his parents didn't sit with
us. We had our friends from Oregon. They sat with us. And there was another couple. And
I can't remember. I don't think it was the Texas couple. No, it's Tommy and Brooke. Tommy
and Brooke. But then there was another couple, but I don't remember where they were. Okay.
Let's neither hear nor there. Now I got to look at pictures to figure out who we sat
with on that first night. So anyways, yeah. So we finished up dinner, jumped on the bus,
went back to our hotel. And that was actually there were two adventures by Disney because
it was so popular they added another one. So it was, remember, they combined both groups.
Because we're staying at one hotel. And then the other group was staying at another hotel.
And I have a feeling because one of the things that adventures by Disney touts that you
stay at four or five star hotels, I think the other group was the group that booked first
obviously. Yes. So I think their hotel was maybe a little nicer than ours. I agree with you.
Yes. Yeah. Because they added that second one because there were so many people on the waiting
list, they just decided to create a second ABD Barcelona. And that's not to say that there was
anything wrong with our hotel at all. But no, but I know what you're saying. We stayed,
might have been like a hill star. Yeah. Yeah. As opposed to a five star.
So anyways, we got back. We were exhausted because we had been up straight. I mean, it was,
by the time we got back, it was 11 o'clock or so. Maybe a little earlier, but 10, 11,
which is, you know, five or six o'clock. It was at four in the morning our time, I think,
by the time we went to bed. Yeah. Yeah. At least so we're up a whole,
we grew up almost 36 straight hours. And then we got to get up up and out of next morning.
We go and get our free breakfast, which I was surprised. Usually when you get those
hotel breakfasts, they're kind of lame, but this was a good breakfast. It was a fantastic buffet.
And again, you know, being in Spain, they're catering to people from all over the world. So
they had a little bit of everything, but they had eggs. They had chacootery. They had pastries. They
had cereal. They had this lot of meats. They had, I remember they had chorizo. Yes, they had scrambled
eggs. They had hard boiled eggs. And then they had some Spanish flair, that potato and onion,
that you again, that I everyday fresh fruit. That was, yeah, that was excellent.
Mm-hmm. The coffee and was not the greatest. Not a fan, not a fan of European coffee.
Little too strong for my liking, even if you throw a little cream and sugar in there, but
but it did the job. It worked. And then what do we do? We get on the bus. And that's when we had
our local guides, because I don't know, I don't know if we mentioned, but you have,
typically you have two local guides from Barcelona and Marco and Rafi were just regular guides.
Marco is from Italy. He's living in Barcelona. Rafi was from Barcelona, but you could have
Americans who are going to be your other tiered guides on that trip or on an adventure.
And they, they actually, I think, go through Disney training and their Disney.
Yeah, they're, they're all the Disney employees. And then our other guides,
they're all just local guides. Right. Like, who was her name? Who was with us?
Astraya. Astraya. We got to roll the D. Astraya. We'll have, we'll have some rolling the D's training
and an upcoming podcast. And I think the other one's name was, was she Mari on Hell?
Oh, no, no, that's going to bother me. Yeah, she had like a two or three name.
So what do we do? We took the bus. We did. We took the bus over to the gothic quarter.
Okay. I think we actually were right outside of the train station, if I remember correctly.
Like D train station that takes you all around Europe, like the fast train. Like the bullet train.
I believe. Okay.
So what is exactly, I don't want to put you on the spot, but what is a gothic quarter?
So it's one of the original neighborhoods of the city. So when they were starting to build it,
you know, actual buildings instead of, you know, whatever it was. And the old and old and days
has the old stone buildings and brick buildings. And we saw some of the Roman ruins.
Do you remember that at all? Okay.
I remember the churches. I remember the Turos. We're all that at Turos. That Marco got us.
That was outside of the cathedral. We were eating them on the stairs outside because we actually did
a group picture. We were all holding our Turos and they were delicious. That was our first
authentic Spanish Turo. What else do we do? We do a museum or two. I remember going inside.
There was a Picasso museum. We didn't actually tour it. We saw where Picasso lived when he was young.
We did, didn't we? I think that I think I was dozing off there in that.
I'm not a big Picasso fan. I mean, I appreciate it, but I'm just I'm not an art fan.
Right. Would you say how you have an eye for art? No. Okay. Thank you. You're welcome.
I don't like art. Disney art. I like things that I can understand, right?
Yes. You like to know exactly what it is that you're looking at.
So what's the art that you that what is it called? Is it abstract? What I like?
No, what's the art that you don't like? I don't like abstract. But I lean toward
impressionism and like doesn't really care for that either.
Anyway. Where did where did we eat? So we actually went from the gothic
quarter to Sagrada Familia. Can I say it? Yes. La Sagrada Familia. That's right. We went to
La Sagrada Familia and we had another local guide. This guy was just one of the biggest church
geeks I ever met. So I think he was actually an employee of the cathedral. Yeah. He was phenomenal.
He was amazing. He was so good. He walked around with an umbrella. And once we get this YouTube
channel up and going, I have a video where Marco's still wearing the hat inside the church.
And he went over and like tipped it up. Oh, sorry. Marco took it off. It was classic.
So we did it to our La Sagrada Familia. Do you want to talk about La Sagrada Familia for a few
minutes or a few seconds? It is the oldest. What is it? It is still under construction. It's the oldest
church that's always been under construction the longest. So it's been over 100 years.
They don't get any government money. So everything. It's all donations. So depending on what type
of bankroll they have, they might be doing work for three or five years and then shut her down
for a year or two. They were supposed to be finished, but COVID put them significantly behind.
Yep. So it's just, it's like nothing I've ever seen before. I have so many different
pieces to it. I mean, it had very traditional looking
alter pieces and then it had this very modern sculpture telling stories of the disciples and
Jesus. It was really, really cool. One of the things that stood out for me was when they were
talking about the windows, how the east and the west, when the sun came up, it would go through
obviously a certain way. And then when the sun went down, he did a good job explaining.
Because they're all stained glass. Stained glass windows, right?
And they've got the names of just different cities in them. So cities that have been important
in the history of Catholicism and Jesus's life. And it was just really, really cool. So
what like each one I think was a different color. So the rays would come through and you'd have
an orange ray and a big green ray and yellow ray. It was a really cool. It was really nice.
I'd have to say that was one of my favorite things. Only because that church is so iconic.
I mean, they play it during the open and run of the Olympics, not the US Olympics, but the
Olympics. And anytime you see a postcard or a picture or a video, it is, it's a similar Barcelona.
Yeah, I mean, it is Barcelona. I was really cool. What would you say we're there for a couple,
at least a couple hours, weren't we? I think as a couple hours, they gave us a little free time
to kind of wander around the gift shop and go through some of the underground stuff. They have
you know, a model of the church and of some of the different features. And
it was just really, it was really cool. Because Barcelona was never really on my list of like,
you know, must see cities. It was never, I mean, nothing has ever been on my list other than Ireland,
England. But when we decided to take that cruise, I did want to spend some time because,
again, nerd now watching the 92 Olympics, it looked like just a cool city. I thought
yeah. And I love the food. I love good Spanish food. I like tapas. I like
paella. So I knew going in that I was going to like it. I didn't know how much I would like it.
So then after the church, we went to lunch. Okay, yeah, I'm looking at the outline.
Okay, that's why it's there. Yeah, I'm kind of like Dave Letterman from my home office. What was
this home office? So I can somewhere in Indiana. No, that's what I thought it was. I wasn't Iowa.
Was it in Indiana? I don't know. Anyways, those of you watching on YouTube about golden retrievers
joined us. He keeps coming in and out of the studio. So we went to this farmhouse. It was it was
on a mountain. It was probably a good, would you say half hour outside of the city? I don't have
half an hour. It's a sister restaurant to the one that we had dinner at the previous night.
It's the same ownership group, but it's a 1600s Catalan farmhouse and covered in Bougain via
gorgeous grounds and just historic. I mean, a lot of it is original. So low ceilings and dark
beams and just really cool. You didn't probably appreciate that as much as I did.
It was fine. It was nice. I mean, walking in was beautiful. That whole
the surrounding area was gorgeous garden garden. Yeah, I mean, it was like out of little house
on the prairie. You didn't realize that you were a half hour from a major world city. It was just
very raw. Oh, it was beautiful. But the food again was phenomenal. It was so good. That was
where we had the paella, but it was veggie paella. Remember, it didn't have any meat. Yes.
Do you remember what else we had there? We didn't have, did we have croquettes?
We didn't have croquettes, but I meant what did we have to drink? Oh, they had, I don't even know
how to explain it. It was, it was, it's an apple liqueur, but you have to hold it like,
it's in a glass dispenser. It's got a long spout on it. It's communal. You pass it around.
And so obviously, because it's communal, you don't want to put your mouth on the spout.
So you have to tilt it up and pour it into your mouth, but it also has an opening on the other end.
So if you tilt it too far, what happens, Mike? It splashes all over your face. I was one of the
first ones to try it. Certainly the first one at our table to try it. And I got some in my eyes.
And as people learned from my mistakes, shall we say, they were able to figure it out and
tilt it in the correct position. I didn't have any. And put it in their mouth, but it was tasty.
And it was fun because where that's, you know, that's our day two. Now we're getting comfortable
in front of each other. And we're all just goofing on each other. People have taken video.
Oh, give me your camera. I'll take a video of you. I mean, it was, that was a, I think that was
one of the funnest parts of the trip. And I think it was because of that drink. Like that's when
we were just all just everybody was just laughing. Marco gave a speech. He handed out the pins
right after that. I didn't mention that every day you get a different pin based on what you were
doing. This was probably the Mickey Mouse Lasagrada Familia pin. So for those of you who collect
Disney pins, he's a rare. These are rare. They might be for sale. Hit us up on social media.
And after that, what did we do? After that, we went to Parkville. Oh, what a fricking busy day,
wasn't it? It was a really bad. Oh, and I forgot about that. That was gorgeous too, wasn't it?
Yeah. So designed by the same, the same architect who did the bulk of Sagrada Familia before he
died, um, Gaudi. Is it Antonio Gaudi? No, no. Is it? He pretty much was the architect
of Barcelona. He did a lot in Barcelona.
Wasn't his house there? Yes. Was that his house that was on the side of the cliff? They
talked. We walked by it and it was like that fence around it. Yeah. Yeah. See, I did pay attention
in science class. Didn't I? Are you surprised? I am surprised. Things that you recall are not
not things I would have expected. Yeah. This was if this was in a in a history book in 11th grade,
I would have been either sleeping or reading reading a sports illicitate. Oh, absolutely.
If I even made it to that class. That's a good point.
Yeah, that was, that was, uh, was that, was that a tour? I think I think our local guy did that
because we had the headsets and that was, uh, a stray. Yeah. Was it a stray?
It's great. But the thing that was really cool about the trip to was, I mean, you had generational,
you know, your family is with, you know, their elderly parents and, you know, you had Tommy and
Brooke and his parents and it was, it was just kind of neat. Yeah. I mean, it was, it was probably a one
and done for a lot of people. Just it's expensive. You're probably, you know, you might not go on
another cruise that has an ABD. So it's a once in a lifetime because we had that that girl with her
mom, right? Who was pushing her mom around the wheelchair. I think that's when they had their,
was that the meltdown they had? I think she left her there when she was done pushing her. Yeah.
So she had a meltdown with her mom. That day, day two, starting to see a couple meltdown,
the loggerments here. Um, but like you said, it was a long day. It was a long day, especially
everybody's just hung over. Yeah, it's a jet lag. Not, it'll mean hung over in the, in the true sense,
but just, I think, just felt like we all got slapped in the face by it. It was that, it was
that point where you were so tired that you weren't tired. Right. Like the first day I was exhausted,
this I was so tired that I wasn't tired. Yeah. And I think that, you know, because we finished
pretty early, when we were done there, we went back to the hotel. We didn't have a dinner that
was did that was dinner on your own. Right. And, but we didn't do anything because we want to,
I think we went, I think we went upstairs to the roof bar and everything was closed and we
checked out the roof bar. We checked it out, but then we went back to the room and you conked out.
I thought, maybe we would go out and get dinner. I had done a lot of research before we left on
different restaurants. I wanted to try things I wanted to have.
Um, a horchata place that I really wanted to go to. Oh, what? What's horchata drink? Kind of like
tea. Okay. Sort of. Um, there was a pastry shop I wanted to go to, but we didn't make it to
any of that because I think by the time you woke up, it was maybe 11. Sounds about right.
And we had another early morning. So yeah. I think remember what we ate.
I don't think do we even need anything? I think we maybe had like leftovers or something that we
brought like from Miami. I don't know. I don't know if we have like a guava croissant or something
like that. Could have been. So that's it. We can wrap it up because that's day two and that we
have two more days to talk about. So instead of extending this podcast out, we like to keep it to
around 30 minutes, no more than 45. So if you have anything else you want to add?
No, just that we really were excited to be there and it lived up to our expectations.
So find out next next week we'll talk about the remaining days and kind of give our thoughts
about ABD if we would ever do one again based on how they're priced and what we think you guys
would think of it. So stay tuned for part two of adventures by Disney Barcelona escape.

Welcome to episode number two of the elevated escapes. I like the steps. Okay.
I
I had this perfect dream, so when you're about to meet me, oh,
this dream was me and you. I want all the world to see you, because sensation, my
guide and inspiration on my team is only coming true.
The wind is a gentle breeze. The bells ring and I are calling us to get ready to fly.
We should be good, never go away.
It was the first time that we met for a long time.
The moment that you stepped into the room, you took my breath away.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
The wind is a gentle breeze.
Let the songs begin. Let the music clear.
Let the voices sing. Let the celebrations begin.
And cry. Let's sing the foundations from the sky.
I'm taking all my life.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah.
I said, oh yeah, oh yeah.
