Episode 53: You Don't Own Anything (And That's Good News)
About this episode
What does it mean to be a good steward? Is biblical stewardship really just about money, tithing, and giving? Or is God calling us to something much deeper?
In this episode of Dad Jokes and Discernment, we dive into one of Jesus’ most confusing teachings: the parable of the unjust steward in Luke 16. For centuries, Christians have wrestled with why Jesus seemed to commend a dishonest manager. But when we look closer, we discover Jesus wasn’t praising dishonesty—He was revealing the importance of faithful stewardship, wisdom, and living with eternity in mind.
The question isn’t simply, “How much do I owe God?” The deeper question is:
“What am I doing with what already belongs to Him?”
We explore the difference between ownership and stewardship, why God is the true owner of everything we have, and how our time, talents, finances, families, opportunities, and spiritual gifts are all things entrusted to us by God.
We discuss:
- The meaning behind the parable of the unjust steward in Luke 16
- Why Jesus said the “sons of this world” are often more intentional than the “sons of light”
- How Genesis 2 shows Adam was given responsibility, not ownership
- Why Christians are called to work diligently and avoid spiritual laziness
- How God has given each of us talents, purpose, and opportunities to use for His glory
- The danger of letting possessions, success, careers, hobbies, or money become our master
- The connection between Luke 16, Matthew 25, and the call to be faithful servants
- Why the goal of the Christian life isn’t success, wealth, or recognition—but hearing:
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
Stewardship doesn’t remove responsibility—it removes the illusion of control.
We carry the responsibility.
God carries the weight.
Join us as we ask the question every believer should wrestle with:
What has God entrusted to me, and am I using it faithfully?
Scripture discussed:
Luke 16:1–13 | Genesis 2:15 | Acts 20:33–35 | 2 Chronicles 15:7 | Matthew 25:14–30
