Episode 745: Top 10 Television Shows

0:00Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of Speak Film and Enter a podcast where we rank TV seasons. Say what? Say what? I'm Nate. I'm Nate. Dylan, do not hear. Oh, there we go. I didn't even get to that point. I'm Dylan. The TV through everybody off. It's throw the audience off. It's throwing members of the podcast off. We thought it would be fun to do something a little different with this episode. We've teased this throughout the entire month of September. I had this idea about a month ago and figured if we're going to do it, we might as well do it the same month that the Emmys happen where we... I didn't know this until this year that the Emmy calendar year is not like an actual calendar year. Oh, I mean, it makes sense because we think of the movie year as not an actual calendar year. The Emmy year is like September through August or something like that.

1:05That might not be exactly what it is, but it's something along those lines. That's why it always threw me off and I was like, didn't that show come out like 18 months ago? And now we're doing like... It's nominated. It's been nominated for awards and it came out like two January's ago. I don't know. It would always throw me off. I finally learned roughly what the TV movie year is. But today we are not going to be talking about movies. We're going to be talking about our favorite seasons of television of all time. We each put together a list and the rules here were basically no mini series because we view those as something a little bit different where it's got an intentional beginning and end. It was never intended to be like anything beyond the little 6, 8, 10 episode batch or whatever it is that was created. Other than that, that's pretty much it. Also one season of or one show per list is kind of what I went with online.

2:08I don't know if you guys followed that as well. Yeah, that's how I followed you because we didn't want to have like season four of GOT game of throw in season five of game of throw. We'd have just so many. So we just... You have to pick one season of the show. The show can be on your list once. Yep, so we all should have 10 different shows and also if you're wondering what about the shows that wanted to have more but got canceled after one season. Those are totally allowed. Those were designed with the intention of the episodic kind of format and continuing on. But some shows just get canceled after one season even if they're really good sometimes that just happens. So we might have some of those included as well. How was this as a process for you guys? Because I had a top... I settled on six pretty early and then had like a seven through 13 or so that I took a while to kind of narrow down to 10. Yeah, my top four or five was pretty easy. The five after that took some time and then even as recently as today, number 10 specifically

3:13changed many times between something that had won incredible episodes. So I felt like it earned it versus something that maybe had a bunch of episodes and overall was good or something from my childhood. It switched around a lot at the 10 spot. But right away when we started, I had a top four top five that I think was pretty locked in. And then I mostly just had to narrow it like which season of this show and I usually had a good idea. I had to kind of watch that see the episode lists to remind me specifically which season I wanted to pick. That was my biggest issue was like the shows that I know that I love. I was like witches that like generally rated as like the highest season. Yep. So like finding that and then I also made me realize that like I, I mean I know I talk about this often like I don't watch a lot of TV. I haven't watched a lot of TV like recently I haven't either. Like even like in my adult life from I'd even say like 18 to now like I just haven't watched a lot of TV. So it's all or some of its older and some of it's like well I know that's supposed to

4:15be good but I don't have like 50 hours to sink into something. You know, so I haven't explored some of the new ones that people love, love, love, love. So I'm sure these lists are going to be kind of interesting. Yeah, I think we're probably going to be pulling for, I mean we're all the same age too. So I'm guessing there's going to be like a 10 to 15 year stretch that a lot of our seasons of television fall in. Yeah. And I like your guys' point about kind of you know the show but you don't know which season. Like my number two pick it was always going to be number two but I was back and forth between which season to choose. Yep. Which is sort of a funny way to think about it. It's like either one of these is going to be number two on my list. Yeah. Yeah. And for me like you mentioned that like I've only seen three and three quarters season of the sopranos. So I didn't include it because you know I it just and like you said I just feels like such an undertaking and I got a big chunk of it out of the way and then I just stop watching

5:16for whatever reason and I'm meant to go back but it just feels like such a heavy like all right. I got to rock out like you know X amount of seasons or something like boardwalk empire which I know is great but I just like I don't have like it with everything like the quality of TV now is so good. So episodes are like 45 minutes to an hour. It's like yeah. And that changed the game. It changed the game but if you go to like a 10 episode season like all of a sudden you have 10 hours of TV to watch it's like yeah but with as a movie podcast you a long movie for us is three and a half like three hours it's like okay I can do that in an evening. I'm not going to knock out you know show after show night after night after night if I need to catch up on like four or five different shows over the course of a month it's just not possible. But I think our age group has an interesting I mean we you know the golden age of television was kind of like the last you know let's say 10 years ago 15 years it was like all these great shows were coming out also like streaming the shift from every show is going to be 24 episodes with commercial breaks to like I don't know this episode is going to be 33 minutes

6:20and the next one's going to be 57. Yeah. And you can binge them all you know. I remember the first time I think it was probably Netflix but like the first time a streamer just like dumped a whole season on a platform at the same time it was just like what are they doing. Yeah. This can't be sustainable how are they going to make their money. Yeah. Like I'm going to watch it in like two days and then leave like what but yeah. You know it seems to be working it's kind of what people expect at this point though I do really love the streamers that try to maintain some kind of model of like let's stretch it out let's let people watch an episode or two talk about it with their friends hang around a little bit I do like that model I mean HBO stuck to it I know Apple generally sticks to that. Yeah. First of all you have a fan of when they kind of do it over the course of like three to four weeks in batches of like two or three. Yeah. That I think is kind of the sweet spot for me where it doesn't feel like you're stretching the show out over like two and a half three months.

7:21But it also doesn't feel like it feels like oh I've got time to catch up to this and discuss it with people rather than like we all know the people in our lives who we think oh this would be a fun show to discuss with these people it came out on Friday it's next Tuesday I'm going to text them and see if they've seen the first couple episodes yet and they'd be like yeah I watched the whole thing on Friday. Oh yeah they're like over it they don't even want to talk about it anymore. And yeah you don't you're digesting the entire thing instead of each episode and I think for me the classic example that is like stranger things when like stranger things season three or season four would drop they were all there and it was like oh this is all I'm doing for the next two days and I was like you know the whole thing versus some shows that still stick to it obviously Game of Thrones and other things where you build the anticipation and you build you know it becomes appointment television which used to be the thing but yeah it's interesting streaming has changed the game. Absolutely. So yeah I think we can dive into this and we'll see you guys can see kind of you know what a movie podcast what three of us what the three of us think of as good TV and I'm

8:24sure like Adam made a very good point that we're not keeping up with TV super well in the 2020s really so we'll see if there's any modern stuff on here for anyone I did note a couple of seasons to include in my honorable mentions of shows that came out in the last couple years that I thought were really good but yeah it's like one season is out I didn't want to include it here because I didn't think it was like that great but I did want to mention some stuff at least that has come out in the 2020s yeah we'll see what I'm not a problem but I mean yeah I'm I'm literally currently on episode nine of Widows Bay which crushed at the Emmys and everybody loves and I so far it has pretty much lived up to the hype but yeah at this point I'm at like two or three shows a year I mean if it shows really buzzy I'll check it out but I just I just don't have the time you know especially with the movies and yeah life and everything yeah I will also be getting to Widows Bay within the next three weeks yeah yeah it's fun so I guess if you

9:30guys are good with it I can start at my number 10 let's do it number 10 for me is Fargo season two nice hell yeah that's an honorable mention for me yeah that is the Jesse Plemons Kirsten Dunst Patrick Wilson Jane Lynch I believe is kind of the grandmother of the Fargo crime family just a truly excellent season of crime television if you see if you saw season one there are some cops this season two takes place chronologically before season one hmmm several cops in season one that mentioned like oh I haven't seen anything this bad since like you know 78 yeah oh yeah like Sioux Falls 78 and they mentioned that a couple times and then the main character from season one or not the main character but the main detective from season one Molly Solverson you jump back and she is a kid in season two and her grandfather is played

10:37by Ted Danson Patrick Wilson is her father and then her mom is the mother from how I met your mother I can never remember her name I know something there yeah and it's just a brilliant season of television about the death of family business sort of tongue in cheek black comedy told through a takeover of like small time North Dakota crime syndicate that's being you know taken over and had warwaged on them by a larger crime conglomerate out of Kansas City yeah brilliant performance by Bokem Woodbine as well as just a very scary human being yeah and I think we watched some are all of this together Nate I remember going over to your house to watch a couple of the episodes and this this season also has Hanzy Dent the Native American Vietnam veteran also great character yeah fantastic and it captures kind of the Cohen brothers feel which is hard to do and season one did that too

11:43but I would agree that season two successfully expands and the back-and-time aspect is very cool yeah yeah it's great yeah who wants to go next um I'll go next um my number 10 and again a lot of the competitors for this one but I'm saying season one of survivor oh wow it might be bending the rules a little bit I know it's a reality TV but that truly changed the game and it's still going I think you could argue it's the greatest reality show of all time the combination of survival stuff competitions strategy backstabbing I mean it was appointment television I absolutely was hooked my family was hooked watched every single episode I was I remember when my favorite character who I wanted to win did not win the old man and Richard Hatch one instead um I just think it it is it was groundbreaking and true appointment television and I

12:48you know I watched a few seasons after but even recently I just like jumped back into season 30 because Hannah's sister it was into it it's still great it still works I mean it like the formula is just so good um so just for influence and kind of the nostalgia um I it earned the 10th spot season one of survivor was a game changer nice I never really got into a whole lot of uh reality TV I think the only time I ever like dipped my toe in was um way back in the day during um like MTV's heyday I'd say it was like em uh road rules versus the uh uh and I never watched those either the challenge like that was the only way I ever watched because it was like a competitive show yeah I was like all right so I watched like a season or two of that was like that was interesting I mean there's a lot more BS for like teenage kids going on in it and then like the next show I watched that was reality was like oh I don't really care about this it's just not my formula it's on my format you know yeah no I didn't I never watching those I never got into big brother I mean

13:52then of course the explosion of reality TV yeah not usually into it uh me and Hannah every once in a while do a guilty pleasure of like love is blind or something you know yeah yeah but you know then that scratches the itch and I'm like okay yeah not a huge really TV guy but man survivor season one was like an event yeah that was what we were in like sixth grade maybe something like that it was like middle school like it was huge I remember okay yeah so yeah fourth grade even yep bio and uh yeah just um yeah I'm every single week me and my dad and my stepmom were on that couch at that time watching sir like yeah so yeah there you go that's 10 10 all right my number 10 um Dylan you might want to hop on hop in on this one uh apologies if it's lower or it's clearly higher on your list but my number 10 is firefly nice hell yeah absolutely it's absolutely on my list yeah I've never seen this oh yeah I mean it's it's a show that was groundbreaking for the time and like now

14:55you've seen this formula I mean it's a sci-fi show for sure you got cowboy western you know a guy when his crew go out be good guys across the galaxy but they're wanted because they have a sorted past and everyone very grounded yeah very grounded like very back backstory that's crazy and yeah it's not Star Trek it's not you know sci-fi with all these mind blowing effects and everything it is just like guys on a their smugglers and they got their ship and almost all of it is just like you know human stories and they're just trying to make it work and um definitely has been emulated and many shows have tried to capture that feel that firefly had and yeah I think you know rightfully it's held up there is one of the kind of widely regarded should have gotten another season travesties that a lot of people list yeah but yeah love firefly should have gotten a lot more should have gotten a lot more stuff I think it's the reason Nathan Filion has the rest of his career and Alan Tudyk and Alan Tudyk it was he was breakout and he got everywhere watch that

16:01yeah yeah honestly Nate I think I think you would like it it's good probably it's yeah um and you can knock it out fairly quick and yeah there's a ball when brother and oh yeah I would have watched ten seasons of firefly I was all in on firefly yeah yeah Chris see my hands makes her her I think debut there um Gina Torres who you'd recognize oh we made a Bachran uh please and aura uh like there's just uh there's a lot of people that you look back and go like oh I know who that is um it was a it was a big show for the certain type of community that it was uh that it was so um and aura and aura was one of my first TV projects oh yeah oh yeah bring a bottle and just how do you say no yeah my uncle's a huge science fiction fan and like any format but particularly books but he's a huge fan of the firefly season that we got yeah on of you for number nine I did want to mention to I think it would have been really easy to just kind of choose my top ten shows ever and then just pick a season of that that I like the best

17:02there are a lot of seasons in here that are not shows that I would have like the entirety of you know my top ten most of these would still be in my top like 20 to 25 probably but there are some shows that I have like in my top five or six of all time where I like didn't have one season that necessarily I felt like yeah stuck out to me as much as some of these others did um so with that said number nine for me is mr robot season one okay nice yeah which I mean when this came out this felt like the freshest thing I had seen in years I think for me this will likely always be the remi malich role yeah um he's kind of been chasing and running and simultaneously running from this ever since I think yeah he doesn't want to play something that's super similar because he already nailed it but it's also like the absolute perfect role for him so everything else he tries just feels not quite right yeah um but the this techno thriller

18:09about a giant corporation that's taken over everything in this coder that has joined up with a group of kind of underground fellow resistance people sort of resistance sort of trying to warm their way in here and fight back and just undermine this massive corporation whenever they can a lot of people have issues with season two of this show the first half of it I think is the only time the show really like stumbles a little bit there's like the main plot of season two doesn't really work but they kind of they kind of back themselves into a corner that it took them like seven or eight episodes to work their way out of but then once they did back half a season two is great season three and four are also fantastic but season one of mr robot really fits for me as something to hold up as like a really great individual season of television that also sets up the you know the bigger places that the show will ultimately go

19:12but also works very well with like just a single season yeah yeah no that's a great pick and I do still need to check that out I think you'd love it like this feels so up your alley to me let's get let's get Robby Malik in the next Blade Runner maybe that'll be how he moves on you know I mean at this point he's still searching for what that what that'll be all right my number nine and this one I definitely you guys did not see coming this is also a throwback to my younger years my number nine is season two of a little show called Batman Beyond oh I didn't go through a bunch of that stuff because I could not remember specific episodes but I know I like that is that the sequel to the Batman the animated series one yeah yeah yeah it takes place in a future Gotham it's a steam punk like like yeah it's like made by the same

20:18people that made Batman the animated series with the same artwork yeah and I think it has like the original Batman yeah still shows up like this Wayne still shows up Bruce Wayne is in his 60s he's like kind of a mentor right yep and so he yeah it's so cool to take his place so he finds Terry I believe McGinnis is his name but yeah I think so yeah teenager you know trains him let's amuse his tech and it's great because it kind of has because it's a teenager trying to fill that role it kind of has a spider-man Peter Parker feel to it while also being in the Batman world and grumpy old Bruce Wayne it's got a lot of tie-ins to all their normal Batman kind of lore but it's also in the future so you get cool vehicles and weapons and villains and I might have to go back and start this show again just to kind of remember because I remember really liking it but I don't remember like any specifics outside of that's how it was like really a sequel series to

21:20the Batman the animated show and it led to the it basically the reason it wasn't renewed for a fourth season as they decided to do what is that DC the group of oh teen Titans not teen Titans it's the dang it I should have I should have looked it up before I knew it before I brought it up I'll I'll get it but it has it like it kind of like it actually led to two spin-offs a show called Zeta and then this other show which was which you'll absolutely recognize I just can't remember the name of it which else I had many seasons but I picked season two because it has 25 episodes there's some old school TV for you and yeah I mean Saturday morning cartoons there was a lot of great ones but Batman Beyond was its own thing and I just think it was a blast and in this world now where we've been kind of saturated with Batman stuff I mean we've had what nine either direct Batman movies or spin-offs Batman Superman Harley Quinn all this stuff I think it's maybe one of the last parts

22:25of the Batman IP that could be redone the right way eventually I think eventually someone will tackle this because yeah it's all there there's a lot to work with but yeah Batman Beyond loved it season two that's my number nine nice well in a in the theme of going way back and off off the beaten path of these shows that I know we're gonna have on here my number nine is Dragon Ball Z the Sel saga oh wow okay this was this was like what third grade me fourth grade me rushing home after school to catch two nami to like lock in and be the coolest fucking anime I've ever seen I mean I loved Gundam Wing and stuff like that but Dragon Ball Z was the one that I always caught and caught up on the lore on it stuff I still I don't do as much of it like the post Dragon Ball Z era stuff like

23:25Dragon Ball GT or Dragon Ball Super but this is when the the series creator Atoriyama was originally going to have Goku Sun Gohan like take over the mantle and become like the next main character then he realized that like he didn't like Goku or Gohan as much and the fans really loved Goku so he ended up keeping Goku as the main character but this see this is like the first time in this series where it felt like no one is gonna be able to beat this this villain he's too dangerous he absorbs a bunch of people a guy from the future comes and tells them like you have to kill these androids because if you don't sell is gonna absorb them and become impossible to kill Goku is supposed to die like he gives up in the fight because he's supposed to die because that's what he's been told and like he's got a heart condition and all this stuff so like even our main character can't beat this guy and they give it to like teenage or preteen Gohan to go just rage mode on the animation's awesome that's the first time you get to see Super Saiyan 2

24:28which is insane I know this means nothing to you or nothing to some of our viewers or listen to Hellia it's it's it rocks it's the one of the coolest things the only problem with Dragon Ball Z or Dragon Ball as a whole thing is there's so much expositions I think there's like 30 episodes or something so you get like five episodes this season of like really cool action and the rest is just like standing there being like I'm gonna power up but like it's just so fucking fun yeah and if you ever get a chance the dbz abridged on youtube is like a somebody a fan made edits of like condensed all the episodes less than position and did voice overs and just like of what the characters probably like what they're like their character arcs are but just kind of made them funny so it's just like it's full of jokes it still gets the same stuff across you still get the action it's excellent but Dragon Ball Z the cell saga for sure is my number nine Hellia great yeah I haven't I never watched the whole series but I definitely have like watched

25:29big climactic fights on youtube just like all right I know the fights are amazing I'm just gonna like watch this like this part and then I did look it up it was the decision to end production of Batman Beyond was because Warner Bros decided to go forward with Justice League animated series and there's time towards the end of Batman Beyond he starts seeing members of the Justice League and then it becomes so yeah I can see that yeah I can all right back to you Nate number eight number eight for me is marvelous Mrs. Maisel season one nice yeah I'm having a list a plus season of comedy television yep if you're not familiar with this one this is a prime show kind of one of their first really big ones I think I think so yeah with Rachel Brosnanhan and what's her name the shorter woman like Alex Stein or something like that I don't know yeah Tony Shaloub Tony Shaloub is also in it he's so fun her parents are hilarious this is about a woman in the

26:32early 60s in New York who her husband does sort of like open mic night at the gaslight once a week she writes most of his jokes for him it's kind of a couple thing that they do but he starts to get just this feeling of kind of on-wee and he's the one who decides he doesn't like the kind of nine to five job wife kids yep you know stability kind of thing and he wants to go out there and kind of prove himself in some other way he's feeling a little undercut by the fact that like everyone just knows that she's funnier than he is yep and so he just leaves her in the middle of the night one night and then she gets basically shit faced and then storms down to the gaslight at like 2 a.m. in her night gown and just like shoves whoever's on stage off stage and takes the mic and rants for like 10 minutes and it's hilarious and I think it's Alex it's forcing Alex borestein yeah Alex borestein plays a woman who kind of runs the uh I don't think she's

27:34on the gaslight but she runs the like she's like the talent she acquires the and like schedules the acts got at the gaslight and she sees this woman uh march I believe that Rachel Brosnan hand plays and she's like this woman's got it she's hilarious and then the two of them set off to make marge a stand up in a world at a time when there were no female stand up like yeah and also there's I can't remember the actor but like Lenny Bruce is a recurring character in the show the depiction is fantastic her parents are hilarious yeah his parents are hilarious he's got a really good arc in season one hers is great it's just an absolutely fantastic season of television and a great funnily good show if you're an adult to just watch with your parents because it's also just a really good family show and it's got a lot of really good comedy that kind of everybody can enjoy highly recommend season one of Marvel's Mrs. Maisel I think diminishing returns as the show goes

28:35season two I think was still very very good but then season three is when you started to see some cracks and I never even bothered with season five mean either which but yeah man season one of Marvel's incredible is truly excellent television and a great finale of that season two with the telethon and just yeah oh yeah yeah great writing um my uh next one is season one of Deadwood nice from HBO we watched this together Nate and college just a fantastic western tv show with all the big names you know Clamity Jane what's the oh gosh there's I mean literally any wild bill Hickock incredible great cast notably oh I should have brought up the sorry I brought up the episodes I should have brought up the cast here Ian McShane and Timothy all of them yep they absolutely

29:37crush it um I mean season one just it is just banger after banger after banger episode so many memorable moments um Ian McShane as Al Swarongin is just incredible perfect um and it's just it's so hard not to binge and it just creates that world and that aesthetic so well I mean definitely one of HBO's achievements you know they're there they're end up being three seasons are there was a movie too but that season one is dang near perfection um and it'll definitely have you swearing like a sailor oh it's it's it's such eloquent filth yeah that's a good way everybody has the vocabulary of like a Shakespeare character mm-hmm but they're just swearing up a storm at the same time but they're just Arthur Morgan it's just yeah I don't know who Arthur Morgan is yeah you have yet to play red dead redemption to but you're on it you're on the path and yeah I do honest swearing up a storm you know bigoted you know I mean all the all the stuff it's just really fantastic

30:44and you know uh at times brutal at times hilarious but always just a great show had to include it so season one of deadwood yeah absolutely and one of the more fun worlds to just kind of hang out in yes and a world that you know there's been western shows i used to be more of them but I would say probably the best at creating that feel yeah all right my number eight uh snap back to reality and some recency bias uh show I actually just finished uh this is the pit season one nice yep you were I've heard I've heard amazing things about season one of the pit yeah I talked about this on our last roundup i'm pretty sure because that's when i finished it um uh it's it's Pittsburgh emergency room or a Pittsburgh hospital emergency room it's a 15 hour shift so it's 15 episodes and every uh episode is one hour of the shift you get the day shift um and then on episode I think it's like nine maybe uh you get kind of a full on um traumatic event that happens that kind of

31:54overloads even and already overloaded system and already overloaded ER um uh I've said this before I've I've talked about it I think with you guys but I think I've said this on the podcast it's structured sort of how the um the battle for Helm's deep is structured um and I take that from uh uh uh critic uh youtube critic uh that i really enjoy um and I highly recommend you watch the episode on that how he explains that and you tell you the full season because the way in which the like the the orcs are are the diseases are the specific cases and then you get this kind of all encompassing like oh shit event and that's when the orc dives in and breaks the wall breaks the wall and it is just it's it's awesome it's actually um no a wily is um the main character he was a doctor on the ER show we back in the day and this was originally crafted as an ER spin off um so there's a couple Easter eggs which I don't remember a ton I watched ER with my family when I was a kid but

32:54that was eons ago um uh so it's really good uh i can't wait to watch season two in season three um i would recommend it to a lot of people it's only a little bit gross there's sometimes where it's definitely worth like okay i don't need to watch this like next 30 seconds because they're gonna do like a procedure that's pretty gross but the storylines and kind of the very uh the very nature of the cases they get and the characters you have uh keep you super invested um so that's my number yeah yeah nice number seven for me we've got our first duplicate here okay and that is deadwood season one there you go okay i was like hell yeah anything i said yeah i'm just gonna shock you guys with the driving balls drop yeah no it's deadwood season one uh i've watched that season three times i finally got over the little like episode two three hump of season two that i'd been struggling with and then season two also fantastic once i kind of yeah committed um but season one

33:59of deadwood is unlike anything else al swear engine is one of the great characters in television history oh yeah and and watching them just kind of build this town and the slow build up of that and there's also like it's like a bit of a courtroom drama in season one as well because there's a murder and it's really interesting to see how they try to handle this in a town where they're like there are no laws here except now they're kind of have to be a little bit yeah but it's still not really because you know right whoever has the guns and the money is kind of in control you know um and yeah even kind of like themes of like the american dream kind of trying to build you know all these people came out west for a reason yeah and there's a lot more um a lot more just hunting for gold in season one then there isn't season two they're still doing it in season two but it's all like you're not watching like the actual workers anymore just like people getting updates from their employees that they've hired you're not actually spending time out in the hills

34:59you know a lot of that in season one also it's just fun with the western to be in south Dakota for sure i'm just a different aesthetic than what we usually get with deserts generally the south west and occasionally the pacific northwest but we don't get south Dakota that often and uh yeah deadwood season one highest of recommendations i can give hell yeah hell yeah and uh so Adam's point earlier definitely in red dead redemption to the character of dutch has some elsewhere engine in him for sure um you'll you'll pick that up uh next my number seven uh is house of cards season two i was wondering if anyone was going to have some house of cards yeah um one of netflix first big original series that was critically acclaimed um for me personally the reason why i got this high is you know i was a poly side major really interested in history so all this stuff government stuff senators power hungry i was like all in on it uh the

36:00international relations part and the reason i chose season two is because season two you know um slight spoilers but the show has been around for long enough you can you watch it but season two is where he successfully ascends to the presidency that's how it ends and he gets he manages to gin up a scandal so the president resigns he doesn't even get elected just great power hungry Washington lobbyist uh stuff going on and also really well written dynamic between him and his wife played by robin right um yeah just uh fantastic television this also came out uh when we were in college and i absolutely watched it all in probably two days i was hooked hooked hooked um yeah just great stuff still one of my favorites and you know it definitely season one two and four are regard as the best and then obviously the Kevin Spacey thing he had to leave the show and it struggled to kind of deal with that which makes sense um but uh yes season two really great stuff great finale um great performances so had to have it on the list and that's my number seven

37:03that's a good one that's a good one uh i remember watching season one of that show and really liking it but i never followed up on season two so i've only seen season one i remember watching it i watched the whole thing by myself at the at the second house that we all lived at together yeah great um my my number seven is the expanse season three nice love this sick so it's interesting i think it's the right pick for the expanse i think it is too but because the hard part with the expanse is it was originally a sci-fi channel show so it has really low production value but a great premise which is characteristic of every sci-fi channel show and some of them are varying degrees good or bad um this one was pretty solid and then it got canceled i believe after season three and then picked up by amazon four seasons four five and six yeah um but when i tell people to watch the expanse i say like normally i with any

38:05show i'd say watch the first season and if you don't like it give up on it unfortunately for the expanse you need to watch a season and a half because there's a twist in season two that changes the game and like they allude to it's kind of the culmination of everything that season happens in season one but it's in the middle of season two um so after that if you're still hooked like you should be uh but if you're still hooked keep going and season three is just when all of those threads kind of start to come together um and finish off uh it's got like all of the episodes i think are rated like nine eight or above or something like that on i'm db um it's really it's really the meat and potatoes before you get into the this kind of the second half of what the show is about with like some terrorism and how that faction of people um start to take over and uh uh i guess cause fear um in the rest of the the planets but um tell you what were you going to say anything about it i was gonna say so usually if you get something like game of thrones or whatever

39:08it's pretty common to adapt like a season per book these pants is a nine book series they only adapted six of the books because there's like a 30 year jump between six and seven so they're like we're just leaving that off season one is the first like two thirds of the first book interesting and then season two the first half of season two finishes the first book and then it's also the first half of book two the reason and i agree with your choice here adaman with the best season of the expanses um the reason season three of the expanses the best is because it's the back half of season two of book two and all of book three so in one season of television you get two like big climactic build ups yeah you kind of get the cliffhanger at the end of two that would get you halfway through that book and then you the first half of season three is like the entire climactic stop in the second half of the second book and then the third book is just the last like five or

40:12six episodes of season three so that also gets going in a hurry yeah which is which is really how climates in the same season of television yeah and it's where the expanse peaks and i also think that the end of season three of the expanse is one of the coolest things i've ever seen on tv yeah it's awesome and it's really where you kind of get like a zoom out or like we're now talking about more than what we've been talking about and you really kind of go not only does it like kind of recontextualize the stuff before it but now you go okay what the hell are we gonna do after this yeah like where do we go opens up all these possibilities it opens up all these possibilities and um i mean season four is solid but some of the episodes are a little like the arc on i forget which like colony planet they go to is kind of weak um for like i think that's like three or four episodes in season four maybe it's longer i forget um it's been the entire season there oh do they really shit yeah yeah that was kind of weak but the the stuff you get with Marco and Aros uh later on all of that is really really good um yeah i can check that out that's season five and time yeah you

41:16would also love the expanse yeah i will say to with the expanse they do a good job the guys who wrote the book their book series also wrote the tv show which i think is pretty rare so you know they combine certain characters when they need to but they're in full creative control so they know how things are supposed to happen and they don't kind of bastardize their own writing yeah they do a very good job of like taking care of it like okay this has to happen but it might just happen a different way in the in the show because it's a visual medium versus a printed medium we know what happens when tv showrunners exactly what i'm a little bit ahead of and stop working with the author and yeah yeah yeah yeah um it also does a really good job of trying to be quote unquote like realistic it's a it's a it's a series that takes place in space in the future very nice heavy yeah but like it's it still has to like you're in if you're in space and you're in zero gravity you still need something to walk around on the ship so they have you like magnetic boots like there are things they still abide by the laws of physics how things happen how things would

43:20Scottish myth and folklore it's got urban fantasy it weaves in our three in legend and some characters from Shakespeare plays like mcbeth is a recurring character in this show we get some really cool flashbacks to some of the stuff that happened to some of the other gargoyles like while the main ones were frozen in time uh we also get some Arthurian stuff that's really cool where they go to the island of avalan for like a three episode arc that is just insanely cool and then some of the characters get sent off um there's a thing in the show where they say avalan doesn't send you where you want to go it takes you where you need to be so after they're leaving there's four of them that basically get trapped by avalan and constantly sent to like different places around the world where they're needed to help and it's like a whole global hopping thing where the creator of the show use this as an opportunity to incorporate mythology from like a dozen plus cultures

44:22around the globe sick which was really really cool um there's just so much of what I like if I look back I can attribute it to this show hell yeah i mean a large part of the reason why mcbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play is because I was already sort of familiar with it from gargoyles before I ever actually read it in high school and it's just really cool it's got a great um evil billionaire character kind of nice you know sort of Tony Stark like character but he's mostly bad but every once in a while kind of on their side it's also got that x-men vibe of like yeah there are bad guys but like sometimes you need them to help you fight this other bad guy yeah and it's got a lot of really complex character work i mean it's way more mature than anything else disney was releasing at that time yeah um season one i think had like 13 episodes or something and then season two was 52 and then the original showrunner was gone they basically sold the rights to it

46:33gaga one two i believe it's season two um definitely my favorite i think season one is probably my second favorite then season two and then gets a little off the rails um but season two asylum just incredible horror show uh great cast Jessica Langs Sarah pulsand Evan Peters James Cromwells at recuinto um okay yeah um and it's basically like a journalist played by Sarah pulsand sneaks into the facility to investigate a notorious serial killer known as bloody face and she gets trapped inside she faces corrupt authorities and the thing is it it brings in so many different horror tropes it's incredible there's like demonic possession there's alien abductions there's a Nazi war criminal there's a serial killer there's ghosts like there's something in the woods like it all in this one season in one season dang yeah it it just it covers so many horror bases it's incredible

47:35and then to top it off the ending is like emotional and dare i say sentimental and like it just after like scaring you and just blasting you with all this kind of horror stuff and um like i was saying just any type of horror there's a little bit of it in there somewhere um and then it ends in like a heartwarming almost tear jerky way it's just incredible writing great performances um yeah american horror story asylum if you're ever gonna check out any of those i'd say asylum and then maybe season one because that's like a traditional haunted house one but season two really brings in a lot james cramwell is a possibly Nazi doctor is very menacing and wealth cast for a guy who normally plays heartwarming like grandpa characters it's like evil that's an anthology show right so you could just watch season one yep oh yeah they're all standalone um a couple kind of throughlines but basically yeah you could just go you could just go straight to season two cool yeah i think

48:40they're releasing season 13 is the one i think i just saw so yeah there's quite a few but if season one and season two are the are the tops then for sure definitely what i'd be checking out so yeah and kovan was pretty good to was about witches and stuff in norlands pretty good there's some good moments there but season two is peak okay we'll have to um my number six six is uh west world season one there you go i thought someone might have this yeah this show had a straight hold on me uh what was the year i moved here 2016 um i watched this with a roommate at the time uh and we were just like this is one of the only shows that i remembered like going under reddit and following like what do we think's gonna happen like who is that like what are these what are the theories because it was going so many different directions there's an old movie on this but it doesn't really follow a lot of that um it's written by michael kryton which is the guy wrote Jurassic Park so a lot of similarities there um he's also like dead so it's not like you can go back and and ask him a bunch of questions um this is a jonathan nolyn and i'm gonna forget uh the female

52:49three episode sort of chunks or arcs because they are split into those little three episode little new arcs so we're halfway through that now so we just got through the second arc of season one's been really fun to rewatch season one kind of remembering how all the characters started and some of the lines that get famous that get kind of echoed as the show goes further but season two i mean it's still new enough where i don't really want to like yeah but i heard only great things the direction that they take it is just so brutal and honest and historical i mean to in the way that how it relates to real things that have happened in the real world yeah historical and then just absolutely edge of your seat thrilling which is incredible knowing where all all of these characters essentially end up yeah the fact that it's able to just rattle off

53:54the second half of the season the way that it does is truly incredible one of the best executed political shows i've ever seen one of the best science fiction shows i've ever seen and the performances also are insanely good just a plus work all around and in my opinion not even close the best star wars thing ever made yeah that's what i think is real impressive is as we've been oversaturated with star wars things that andor was able to achieve such heights from what i've heard and be more serious and be relevant and yeah compared to just all the other stuff they've put out yeah it's like watching the you know i mean toney gillroy created the show he cited like the French resistance and the the Russian revolution the French revolution all different kinds of things pulling from real world like the apartheid in south africa it was like all these things he did a lot of research and injected a lot of incredible political commentary and storytelling and different

54:57types of characters we also follow several characters who work for the empire yeah who are excellent characters inner workings and stuff like that yeah just really really excellent stuff hell yeah um my number five is season one of true detective i think somebody who have this um this was just um this is a phenomenon when it came out phenomenon and i mean you got mccanae woody harrelson and just great um procedural stuff mixed with kind of almost it feels supernatural it feels like there's like evil in the air um but just both their characters are so well written um and really like you know the the twists and turns you gotta dig into this investigation it's not gonna go fast it's not you're earning every break every clue every you know the time jump it's just it's just fantastically written none of the other seasons have lived up to that first one

56:02um and just the pairing of mccanae and harrelson and how they play off each other um and i think still you know mccanae has done a lot of great stuff but still maybe his best work in this in this show best character maybe his best character and i mean the you know some of the crazy episodes where he just like goes in and goes hard are like incredible like action sequences edge of your seat stuff and there's also very emotional moments and uh yeah just fantastic television definitely had to make my list for sure it was just where to put it but season one of true detective um just incredible probably watched it two or three times because it was like i watched it and then i was like oh you haven't seen this let's watch the whole thing yeah and that really at the time like legendary longtake at the end of i want to say episode four i think yeah um was really kind of not something you saw in tv ever at that time now everybody's kind of showing off and with it yeah yeah i can do

59:08without me and it was a do not watch this without me which you guys did except i knew what was going to happen so i wasn't as like but you basically texted you were like we're sorry but we reached a point where like we couldn't wait anymore and then we have to finish it and i was like i know what happened so i understand and then i got back it was insanely hung over and i think the next day just powered through the rest of the show and then um i'll talk about this a little bit later yeah when it might be coming up again on my list so uh i love the hot swap here for this atom but yeah that is how we experienced because then atom arrived and like September or August or something yeah or late august and i was like i think you'd like this yeah and we sat down and watched it and just i just all the questions i remember having like all right so what the fuck is going on who are these people like the the show opening is beyond the wall with with the men of the night's watch and like you never see any of those people again but just like so the are these zombies like what is this and then going back and being like this is what the wall looks like to see these characters are this is like yeah the royalty is visiting winter fell yeah

1:00:15you get all the dynamics i mean yeah there's so many characters but does such a good job of introducing them all and it you can follow it if you just like pay attention and also you have a discipline the discipline to start with white walker stuff and then just not go back to it and just be like it's there i know you're still thinking about it but we've got enough other things going on like that was brilliant yeah i mean this this show took over like pop culture for like a decade like oh yeah and the this all of us were waiting for season two like oh my when is it here when is it here like yeah but i'm it was so big too i remember in the house that um we stole i somebody stole Nate's book or something like that because we were upset with you about something or it was just more like a funny gag or something like that and you were like if you don't give it back i will spoil the ending of season two yeah i remember i remember you have the net overheads of like i know what's gonna happen in season two don't fuck with me don't fuck with me the funniest part about that is that dillon was the one who actually made me realize i had that power

1:07:43roblo and adam scott show up in the last like one or two episodes of season two to kind of introduce them but then they're regulars for the first time in season three um so you got the Leslie Ben start to build up stuff you got the harvest festival stuff um you got the ron swanson pyramid of greatness showing up in this season you've got the little Sebastian funeral at the end the episode where they all get shit faced yeah tom's really cheap booze snake hole lounge mm-hmm uh and also april and andy's wedding yep is in this season um Ben and Leslie kind of starting to like secretly date is here um it's just phenomenal it's i think the most fun show to just hang out in yeah obviously this gets a lot it gets held up parks and rec or the office the office or parks and rec what they're out around the same time similar style shows same network uh i enjoy the office i can't watch more than like two episodes of it at a time because it's just

1:16:04tywin at the capital this time so you get like the real family dynamic stuff where occasionally you get like tyrian and sers they get drunk together scenes are always fun for me yeah because they just hate each other so much but every once in a while they're like you're the only other one in the city who gets it yeah yeah about their dad um the santa stuff in season three is really good that's when she starts to finally kind of grow up a little bit and you start to see kind of who she can become uh just the brand stuff is also really good where he starts learning about kind of warging and you meet jojan and mera oh yeah when they start going to the the the the north yeah when they're kind of making their way north yeah that's good really excellent stuff like all the way around and then just kind of the slow i mean you can see all the clues once you know it's coming about the betrayal and the red wedding and all that stuff and that just hits yeah so hard every single time i remember watching this Dylan at your place i think with our buddies Blake and Jay and jage afterward nobody spoke for like a couple minutes and jage just said i don't think i'm

1:17:06ever going to be happy again yeah so i i did have i what i had written here was season one but since atoms and they already had that and dilland since you already mentioned season six i was 50-50 on the two anyway so just a chance to talk about season three but those two were essentially tied for me especially when you look at like book adaptations i think those are the two best seasons as well hell yeah nice choice on to me for my number two and this one two top shows are going to be so i'm very curious to see what order you have them in and which seasons you pick so this one for the season was maybe the hardest to pick i ended up going with season five of breaking bad okay i think i mean there are so many great moments in the show almost went with three and then i was looking at four the episode list i was like oh my god great moment great moment great moment almost one with four but i gave it to five as kind of a crowning kind of lifetime achievement award for breaking bad because the thing that breaking bad did so wonderfully is it landed the plane

1:18:11and it ended perfectly and it has the penultimate episode i believe osamandius which i think is like one of the only ten out of ten rated episodes on whatever site always does this like regarded as one of the best written episodes of television ever where so many of kind of the lies and the like when is all this chicken to hit the fan when is he gonna have to become just the evil that he has been warring with for like four seasons now and i mean just for the mere fact that they were able to finish it the way they did just incredible writing and definitely appointment television i remember going over to like steves house when to watch it with his parents i watched osamandius's steven his parents it was just incredible so the show in general is incredible definitely one of my favorites but that's why i ended up going with season five just Walter white all-time great

1:21:11yeah it's yeah it's really fantastic television um so season one of True Detective is my number two and i believe we can all again say this unanimously our number one choice are we i don't think we're gonna have the same season you don't well know like we're the same show right oh yeah i don't gonna have the wire right the wire the wire the wire yeah what do you have what season do you have i have season four i'm almost a hundred percent certain i know what Dylan has season three yeah okay and what do you think i have maybe one season two i have season one okay okay i have season one it's just easy because for me like that's that's the one that started everything and like again you come at the king you best not miss the wire is is number one like the wire is number one yeah go ahead with these damn yeah tell you i mean yeah i also think i think any of the first four seasons of this show are would be worthy picks yeah season two gets better every single time i watch it yeah it's largely just for like the shock factor of like the hard left turn that it makes and then seasons three

1:22:17and four go back to being like what you expected the follow-ups the season one to be so it's still just sort of stands on its own over here but season four is also just a masterpiece yeah yeah fantastic but season four i chose because for me it just does the best job of like weaving all these storylines together and i think adding the school stuff just brings in a whole different perspective that ties into everything else so well um the one part i think the best argument for a season for like one or three basically is that you still have the barkstale stuff going on as like the front of the story um but you know season four for me with the kids with the kids generation preses redemption and seeing the evolution of carver yeah as a cop um it's the one

1:23:19season that also like mcnaulty kind of takes a backseat because he's like sober and just working on the street again and just kind of you know hanging out and doing his thing it's got i mean there are a lot of really tragic deaths in this show i think it's got maybe the most i think so yeah uh i mean it's an old show i could say it but i could also just not i mean i think bodie at the end of season four oh yeah yeah is the one that feels the most it feels the closest to like like we just took out the soul of part of this show essentially yeah yeah it's also fun to watch carcadie actually try to govern instead of just scheming for yeah yeah yeah and just you know he just fails so hard like you know kind of that he's going to um and like herk just fucking up so hard so many times i'm like the Omar storyline is also great

1:24:29here too yeah you know there's stuff it's just it's such a big show i'm sure i'm forgetting well the the stuff with bodie and like namened also at the school yeah great stuff the stuff with um bubbles and then who's the other kid the kid oh yeah that's right yeah sharad that stuff is just absolutely a killer as well and then this is you you also get some amazing detective work from freeman chema learning how to be on homicide bunk has some really good stuff with Omar in this season too i think yeah yeah um and then just all the investigation of like marlowe and his crew and the vacants and like where are these people going and just like seeing the different way that they are attacking this chris and um chris and pute snoop snoop chris and snoop and then my goal is coming up as bodie's buddy who yeah oh yeah eventually gets out but yeah chris and yeah chris and snoop and yeah the marlowe family being on top and trying to handle that yeah incredible um yeah uh minus

1:25:33season three um just because it's uh the war yeah it's the the the stanfield barksdale war so you get great moments with that you also it also the hamster dam season with bunny trying to kind of have an unofficial unpolished legal drug zone uh you get stringer bell moving the barksdale trying to make it legitimate getting to real estate working with prop joe and then him kind of clashing with avans kind of more gangster street mentality um and then with the political stuff you have uh carcetti making moves you know targeting mayor uh mayor roise um and just him being like peak like like the foreshadowing of little finger like yeah yeah so that's why I did choose season three but yeah I agree seasons one through four cutty stuff in season three is also excellent exolyte stuff is excellent and I mean stringers death like though I think the last episode of season

1:26:37three is very strong argument for best episode of the show yep um get some brother mu zone yeah stuff going on yeah um the like sort of dual betrayals where they just yeah it's yeah I mean season three is also really good it's got a lot of really good Omar stuff as well as most seasons do yep um I'm trying to think of like who uh I feel like I'm missing something also from season three that was awesome but that's the problem with this show is there's just so much good shit in like every season yep um though Adam the one that you chose is the easiest one to remember all the beats because it only has like it hasn't introduced all these other layers yet right yeah and that's what's interesting about season one is like you can show season one to anybody like again regardless of like even say like political affiliation and they're going to go like yep that's just the way it is man like that's just how things go and then like if you if you show that if show that season to somebody who's like staunchly republican they're gonna they're gonna fall in love with it regardless because it's probably gonna confirm a lot of their biases

1:27:40unfortunately yeah but and then you're gonna show them the season two and season three and season four and that may not change their mind but they're gonna go oh oh yeah like it's it goes so much deeper and it is more than than surface level shit but the surface level stuff is really really good in the show it's just how it's not it's not it's just it's just people trying to survive it's not good versus bad it's not cops versus robbers necessarily it's not that people in these institutions and the pressures that they put on them and the how they're you know they just want to do good but this but that and now we're at odds and this you know I wish I could just go and arrest these guys but you can't or it'll ruin the investigation or you know lester everything with lester setting up the wire caps and last thing I say it's season one you know that opening it's not quite a monologue but the opening scene with McNulty and snap boogie talking about why yeah why does he always rob the dice game if or why do you still let him play the dice game if you know he's always gonna rob it

1:28:41and it's just like I don't know that's just like how it is just like America man you got to yeah I remember I was gonna say about season three that also slim charles isn't see so just kind of the coolest characters ever ever I know Omar gets all the credit but slim charles so cool so great and then I can't remember which season has the iconic scene where McNulty and his partner I can never McNulty and oh my god why can't I since when they investigate the crime scene and oh season one that season one that's not one they just say fuck over and over over and over and over and over and over and over five minutes of them just look at everything they say yeah so good it's excellent yeah that's I mean that's season one is also I mean there's obviously a young Michael B Jordan in the show and also up there for I think that's most people's choice for the most heartbreaking death yeah yeah yeah but shout out to boogie too because his yeah you had

1:30:45broad church season one one of the best murder mystery seasons of television ever made I thought about putting this in there because it would have been hilarious and I do love this show American Vandal season one oh yeah okay into the dicks yeah and then I also just really quick have stranger thing season one prison break season one to just go for like you know the old like cliffhanger style TV readers like well next yeah and then haven't seen enough of this show yet but really good for season foils war also the doose season one oh yeah I really enjoyed and then two other ones that weren't really considered for the top 10 but I wanted to include a couple shows from the 2020s uh department queue really good mystery show on Netflix with Matthew Good takes place in Edinburgh which is kind of a fun uh little difference and then black doves season one oh I love to death it's yeah I recommend this show to pretty much everyone it's cure nightly and

1:31:47Ben Wysha in an action comedy spy show oh okay and it's like six episodes and season two comes out in early November oh that's cool it's black doves is an absolute blast I think I watched it like three times okay nice all right yeah I've got plenty I've got plenty of them too I'll just rattle them off here yeah season one of Battlestar Galactica sci-fi's greatest show by far I've heard great things great things um season one of Evangelion showed out to my I thought you might have this somewhere I just showed it to me we powered it out over a weekend I get why it's so iconic um season one of Severance gets a nod to me just great weird writing season two of the leftovers HBO show that's very very heavy but it's on here because in episode eight it takes a direction that is so different than the entire rest of the show one of the most fascinating episodes of television I've ever seen called International Assassin watched it with Jay we were both blown away

1:32:48next I have season one of playmakers ESPN's greatest show by far football the football that one there was something there they were just too ahead of our time and they weren't on HBO if that would have been on HBO it could have went places yeah I agree I also have a season one of the walking dead I mean wait up how to how it pulled off the the zombie world banger of a pilot yeah definitely got worse as it went on but my god season one was incredible I have season one of a show BBC show called Life on Mars which was forgotten which should not have been forgotten great cop drama about a cop whose present day he gots an a coma and he wakes up in 1979 London and just great weird like twist but good character work incredible finale I also had season one of Ozark because Ozark is pretty well written shout to Jason Bateman and then just some comedy ones here because I wanted to mention them season two of Sheppel's show with the Prince episode and so many other iconic moments so many other ones I have I have season eight of South Park lots of bangers particular the anime

1:33:54episode which is all time one of my favorites incredible I have season one and two of children's hospital weird little fucking show that I loved in college so many great comedy actors breaking the fourth watch just crazy good and then I have last one one to give a shout out to season one of one punch man which is a weird little anime yes it only it's one of those words like it was a manga and so it has like 36 episodes but like really there was 13 that were like an actual show just an incredible show about a superhero where that's his thing one punch he always defeats who he's fighting and you bet all these other heroes and all these other monsters and back stories and they take it so seriously and all this stuff and he's just like bored and like whoever whatever he faces one punch he wins which is a fascinating dynamic great finale just a fun a fun show that's kind of poking fun at anime while also being kind of badass so yeah wanted to give one punch man a shout really

1:34:55quick I forgot to mention archer season two oh yeah glad we got an archer I was getting there oh yeah yeah yeah yeah that's what I've got those I've got archer season two season three Bob's burgers nice probably season two um an old one samurai jack hey there you go yeah I'm interested in this show but I've never seen any of it I've heard really whatever that's great this is something I always watch as a kid and I like I was like maybe I just don't get it the art style is really interesting it's just one it's just one music great music verse yeah verse uh like a dragon beast that's it that's the whole show I'm glad we got some adults swim yeah yeah wound up some of that name right jack um obviously I mentioned this before but I don't know that I have like a full season of it yet but the match oh yeah yeah they love right show time in that regard scrubs season four five or six like that scrubs got a shout out Mike I mean yeah Mike's spirit is so over show in college the best um again

1:36:02I just rewatched this but uh last of us season one nice at yeah nice I mean yeah totally yeah totally bad it's totally good I mean that's one of the best video games of all time narratively so that helps um I had the west wing on here um I have Ted last those season one there you go I'm glad that show it's so heartwarming in a way that's not like so overly cheesy and like not like a family like a family show you know what I mean yeah it's not like network family TV yeah um it's it's solid and then with great comedy lines and stuff too yeah exactly exactly and like I mean I'm a sucker I'm a sucker fan so I'm a sucker a sports show but it's not helps a ton yeah a typical sort of um and then the last one I have is a night of the seven kingdoms more you go oh god yes I'm so glad you left that up that was in my honorable mentions and then I think I put it actually in the top 10 and then took it out from there but then forgot to put it back in the honorable mentions yeah I can't wait to see you know I spend up yes I also love and there's a reason to death yep yep and shout out again to widows bay I'm on episode nine so far it's lived up to the hype
