For the State Basketball Falls 80-79 to Duke, but this is a basketball team and a program
0:48
to be excited about.
0:55
You are Lockdown Seminoles, your daily podcast on the Florida State Seminoles.
1:01
Part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
1:06
But back into Lockdown.
1:07
Seminoles, I'm your host, Brian Smith, doing a quick recap after Florida State's 80-79
1:13
loss to Duke in the ACC tournament.
1:16
I'll have to admit, I'd watched Florida State play a few times this year, but never all
1:21
the way through wasn't necessarily all that interested all the time, because did know
1:25
a lot about the program, did know a lot about Luke.
1:28
The little bit I watched I was excited, but seeing this team play tonight and then looking
1:34
at their recruiting class, if you're not excited about what's ahead for Florida State
1:38
Basketball, you need to go back and watch and I'll give you my overview.
1:42
There are a couple things to look at statistically that you can't go wrong with here, but this
1:49
is overall just an exciting brand.
1:51
They attack, they attack, and they attack.
1:56
I grew up in Indiana where basketball was king.
1:59
I know what it looks like.
2:00
I grew up literally in the county where the movie Hoosiers was made.
2:03
This is the kind of basketball anybody could be excited about from any era.
2:07
When you add the kind of talent that Luke has recruited, they've got a top 10 class where
2:12
there's a don't know, including one Mr. Porter's down low, that's 6'11, 3'20.
2:19
They're going to be a different team next year.
2:21
They got out rebounded horrifically tonight by the way, 46-25 by David.
2:26
Florida State just doesn't have the post-claim to make it happen.
2:29
The boozer, those guys played basically just basketball in their own style, which was
2:35
just more physical, more powerful underneath, and that was the difference at the end, but
2:39
Episune, McCray taking a shot at the end had a chance to win on the last shot.
2:43
If it wasn't for some mis-free throws and just some mental heirs, they were up like,
2:47
what was it, 69-61 or something like that at one point?
2:52
The Duke went on their patented run, got back in it, and Florida State battled, like they
2:58
gave up like a 13-14 point run, and they just never gave up.
3:01
Again, they attacked, they attacked, and they attacked.
3:07
If you like up and down basketball, guys with a lot of athleticism, and no fear, look
3:14
out, coaching them, this is a lot of fun to watch, man.
3:19
I just tuned in today, didn't know if I was going to do a show or anything, but I'm
3:24
honestly just like really impressed.
3:26
Again, basketball was my first love, and this was one of those things where I didn't
3:30
really know what it was going to be like, because it's Duke, but then I saw Duke's
3:36
got a couple of guys out.
3:37
I could really hinder him, and Porta State's been hot, they've won some games here lately.
3:41
Maybe this would be a pretty good game.
3:42
I didn't know Porta State was this good, though.
3:45
Here are a few stats overall on the night, and by the way, I'll get Jones.
3:49
That Duke can't absolutely knock him down.
3:51
He had a couple shots like with Booser in his face, falling away, draining threes, like
3:58
Yeah, he is a really impressive guy.
4:01
For the night, Jones, he came up with 28, I'm a cray.
4:05
He had 25, and then Wiggins, he knocked down 13.
4:09
He didn't play bad, but in fact, he might have had the most efficient night.
4:13
It's just he has to play defense to do other things.
4:16
Again, they're not the biggest team, but Porta State, despite their front line size, man,
4:21
Again, the key, though, that's stat line.
4:23
I had to read this twice.
4:25
Rebound for FSU 25, Duke 46, holy moly, that's really crazy.
4:32
MAM had 10 boards, a brown for Duke, had four points, yeah, 12 boards.
4:38
That's a good effort by him.
4:40
Porta State needs to shoot three throws a little better.
4:42
That is one thing I know for sure.
4:44
They really, like, one of the things that has hurt Porta State in certain games this
4:47
year when they lost, they've shot a pretty low three point percentage.
4:50
They actually outshot Duke.
4:53
One even close Duke from three to night, I believe they were 29%, I mean, it was bad.
4:59
Yeah, they were 10 for 34 to 29%.
5:02
Porta State, they were 11 for 28.
5:04
You'll take 39% every single night that you shoot.
5:09
There's no way around it.
5:10
Unfortunately, the one guy that was knocking him down, holy cow, was he ever Evans.
5:15
He was, he had seven triples for Duke.
5:18
He was just a guy that Forta State did not close out on him as good as they should have.
5:22
They probably needed a few more breaks in terms of him not just being lights out, but that's
5:28
They got to get better defensively.
5:30
Their effort on defense is not where it needs to be.
5:32
I'm sure Luke knows that.
5:33
There was some key seniors, et cetera.
5:36
But with this recruiting class, it's pretty impressive.
5:39
And I want to kind of set the stage wide for to state fans need to look at this as more
5:42
than just a football school.
5:44
Again, I've talked about this for a softball, it's good, baseball is good, other sports
5:48
With Luke, you're recruiting the way he is.
5:51
This is a program that, barring something very unforeseen like this is his own reminder.
5:55
He's not going anywhere.
5:57
I couldn't Forta State be a top 10 basketball program.
6:01
They absolutely can be.
6:03
When you can recruit the way this guy does, and you're as passionate about FSU as Luke is,
6:09
and you play this brand of basketball.
6:12
Of course you can, absolutely you can.
6:16
We come back, I want to talk about the recruiting class a little bit, and I'll pull it up on
6:21
And we'll go over, as a matter of fact, let's just pull it up right now.
6:25
I'll share my screen real quick, and then we'll come back to it.
6:28
But there's no reason that you couldn't do this and have some serious fun with this, because
6:35
like, look at the size, like Marcus Ponder, by the way, that's the kid I mentioned.
6:40
For those of you watching on the screen here, if you're watching this live, he's 6-11-3-20-something.
6:45
That is a humongous human being.
6:48
That's going to probably be a situation he needs to lose a little weight, I'm sure.
6:52
But at the same time, look, there are always so many years of experience.
6:56
That's an extra five to eight rebounds of game you're going to get, because he's just too
7:00
He wants to run into that.
7:01
And then they've got several other players that are good, like, by the way, Jason Lopez
7:04
is already on campus.
7:05
He's on the football team too, Colin Paul, small forward, top 108 recruit in the country,
7:11
Brandon Bass Jr., number 97 recruit in the country.
7:14
He got Lopez, who's a point guard, I can tell you, he'd be ranked higher in basketball
7:19
if it wasn't for the football thing, but he's really talented.
7:24
And then Marta Barnes is committed.
7:25
He's number 90 in the country.
7:27
If you keep recruiting like this, and you play like this, I bet in the next class, four
7:31
to states recruiting, we'll take another step up.
7:34
And to that end, I want to come back to this here in just a second after the break, but
7:39
I've got something else to talk about now on four to states, walked all symbols, because
7:43
this is what basketball should look like in the modern era.
7:47
Just add a little more spice underneath.
7:48
Again, you can't get out rebound of my 21, and you can be a totally different program.
7:52
So let's talk about that next right here.
7:53
I walked on symbols.
7:57
Today's show is brought to you by our friends over at Fandall.
8:00

10:28
Just check it out down below in the description.
10:31
All right, let's talk a little bit more about the recruiting class.
10:35
I'm honestly pretty impressed with it.
10:37
I looked at this a few times before.
10:39
I do need to go look at Ponder and make sure that I've got a pretty good feel for him.
10:43
I'm curious to see what his film is like because big guys, you got to watch him a little bit
10:48
more. But again, he's the big guy out of Virginia.
10:50
He plays at Gillian Basketball Academy, Gillian Basketball Academy.
10:54
I never heard of it.
10:55
Probably a small school if I was the guest.
10:57
But if you're that big, it doesn't matter how big the school is.
11:00
You're a guy that's going to stand out on the court in a classroom where you're out.
11:04
So getting that center is important.
11:06
Now, my question is, can Ford stay now that they're out?
11:09
I don't suspect they're going to play in the tournament.
11:13
I would imagine they're done.
11:15
They can focus on next season.
11:17
Can they get a true power forward at minimum?
11:20
How much money do they have to spend on who?
11:22
It's like Luke talked about.
11:23
They were dead last in the ACC coming into this year.
11:27
I imagine that's going to go up a little bit,
11:29
especially with the way they played.
11:31
And it should be pretty easy for him to fundraise.
11:34
It shouldn't be that hard.
11:36
Secondarily, what player wouldn't at least want to take the phone call?
11:42
Whether it's a transfer or a Juco or a high school kid.
11:44
Maybe they could run in somebody that had a good end to their high school season or something who knows.
11:49
But this ought to be a pretty easy sell.
11:51
From the majority of kids that I speak to and I cover football recruiting obviously.
11:55
That's the only thing I've ever really covered.
11:56
So today, kids want to play in an offense that's exciting.
12:00
That's up tempo in football.
12:01
What's no different in hoops?
12:03
Nobody wants to play in a 61 to 60 kind of game.
12:07
Like, you know, kids maybe grow up in Wisconsin, go to play with the badgers, whatever.
12:11
But most kids want to get up and down the court.
12:14
Four to state was just as athletic as Duke today.
12:16
They just weren't as big.
12:18
Getting some of these kids, again, like Ponder to mix in with what they show today.
12:22
They're going to start getting top 50 recruits.
12:25
It's not going to be a hard sell at all.
12:28
I'm curious to see what they get in the portal.
12:31
Comment down below what you think the most important position is other than say,
12:35
I'm a big guy underneath this, the obvious.
12:38
What do you think is going to be necessary because they've got some players on the roster.
12:42
And I don't know what that well that didn't play a ton.
12:46
They've got a few more guys moving on.
12:47
I suspect the roster will change quite a bit.
12:50
But with the freshmen coming in, if they can just get one or two really good portal guys,
12:55
why couldn't they finish at the top six in the ACC next year?
12:58
And I can actually be an NCAA tournament team that nobody wants to play.
13:02
You see the style here.
13:07
You add just a little bit more of an elixir that's got some more juice in it.
13:11
Put it on top of what they already have.
13:13
I'm not saying you're going to have a guy like McCray, by the way, he is so much fun to watch.
13:21
Congrats to him on a great career for the state.
13:23
I think they can just be good at point.
13:27
Or again, you're not going to have McCray next year.
13:29
That's not likely with the way they play basketball.
13:34
Why couldn't they, I mean, is it out of the realm to see them?
13:37
We'd number four or five next year in the week.
13:39
I'm not going to pick them to win the week or beat Duke or something like that.
13:43
Why couldn't they be?
13:44
They get just a little more money.
13:47
And they get just a couple really good guys out of the portal with this class.
13:50
And Ponder is as good as he's supposed to be.
13:52
Comes in and helps him, gives him 10, 15 minutes.
13:56
Yeah, I think they could be at possible top five team in the ACC.
14:00
By the way, shout out to Wax.
14:04
He preached it before the season with this press conferences and stuff that I watched.
14:08
And I was curious, okay, is this guy just a talker or not?
14:12
But like he said, he's going to let him play free,
14:14
go to play hard, just play defense, et cetera, and we'll go at it.
14:17
They kind of ran out of juice at the end, especially in the defense event.
14:21
They're not deep enough.
14:23
But everything he said was true, especially about the offense just getting after it.
14:27
Get the best first shot that you see.
14:30
It reminds me of some of the old Dean Smith teams at North Carolina.
14:34
The best first shot is probably the best shot you're going to get before the other team's
14:37
defense truly gets set.
14:39
Before the state kind of lives and dies by that.
14:41
And they score a lot because of it.
14:43
And again, adding one more talent next year, there's no reason to think.
14:47
That they won't have a great opportunity.
14:49
And adding some of these kids, I think, is a big part of it.
14:52
So let me scroll down here again just so you can see a little bit more.
14:56
I need to watch the Marta Barnes kid a little bit.
14:58
He's a combo guard that's pretty athletic.
15:01
I'm guessing he's never 90 in the country.
15:03
He's got to be pretty good.
15:04
I wonder if he can really play point.
15:06
That would be big for a Florida state because if that's the case,
15:09
point guards are pretty expensive in the portals.
15:11
I'm sure most of you know.
15:13
It would be a good thing if Florida state could, you know,
15:17
get her top-notch point guard.
15:18
But that's a lot of your cash.
15:20
So we'll see what they do.
15:21
But thank you to everybody that stopped in.
15:23
And this impromptu walked on Seminole's live show.
15:27
They posted and kind of go with it from here.
15:31
I'll cover recruiting and stuff.
15:34
There's a reason to follow this.
15:37
And I'm glad that I have a chance now.
15:39
But got a comment or two here in the chat.
15:42
I wanted to just say hello Garrett.
15:45
They gave him hell.
15:47
The future is bright.
15:49
Like, why would you not like this team?
15:52
MBS, quick question.
15:54
What did Weekly Out to accomplish in his first year
15:56
that Norvelle has yet to accomplish?
15:58
Signed a top 10 class.
16:00
Yeah, that that shows you right.
16:02
This is a great point.
16:06
And true belief in the program that you've represent.
16:09
Goes a long way, man.
16:11
It goes a long way.
16:13
People will see through
16:15
when you don't want to be somewhere.
16:17
I'm not saying Norvelle doesn't want to be a Florida state.
16:19
But he's just not a good recruiter.
16:22
Laox gets after it.
16:25
He knows how I have to.
16:26
His family's in trench now.
16:29
That's going to be pretty easy for him to sell the Florida state basketball program.
16:33
Hey, making it football related.
16:35
I love FSUB ball as well.
16:36
And Luke deserves the love.
16:38
Just wanted to point that out.
16:39
Oh, no, you're absolutely right, man.
16:43
It's actually very true.
16:46
When you put in that effort, it matters.
16:50
That's on Norvelle that he didn't get that done in the past.
16:53
He's put it a lot more effort recently, but it's hard to get over the top
16:56
and that because people don't believe.
16:58
So he's paying the price for it.
17:01
Thank you folks very much.
17:02
I'm going to cut this one off here.
17:04
I'll post it in a little bit.
17:06
But everybody, once again,
17:08
we're going to do some basketball stuff from time to time now.
17:10
It's just fetching the off season.
17:12
Norvelle doesn't want to give access to the media and everything.
17:15
We'll cover basketball.
17:16
We'll cover some other stuff.
17:17
But thank you for checking out Walked On Simmons.
17:19
We will see you again soon.
