Before we begin this episode, I need only 60 seconds of your attention.
0:05
This week and this week only we do our only fundraiser of the year, givetorch.net.
0:11
We ask our friends, our listeners, our viewers, our participants to partner with us so that
0:17
we can continue doing the work we do.
0:19
We don't cancel any classes.
0:22
We don't make any exceptions for days off so that we can raise money.
0:27
No, we want to continue to teach.
0:28
We want to continue to influence in every way we can, just so that you know, last year
0:35
in 2025, our videos grew 295% in their exposure, in their viewership.
0:43
Our podcasts grew, some of them 10%, some of them 30, 40, 50, 60, some of them 200%.
0:52
Really unbelievable growth in the listenership of our podcasts.
0:55
But not only that, we have in our torch center, we have ongoing classes, we have lunch
0:59
and learns, we have evening classes and chavaras and people's homes, we have our torchwood

1:31
My dear friends, thank you and enjoy the episode.
1:37
You're listening to Rabbi Arya, will be of torch in Houston, Texas.
1:42
This is The Partial Review Podcast.
1:46
Good morning, everybody.
1:47
Welcome back to The Partial Review Podcast.
1:49
This week's Partial is Parshas Sav.
1:52
Also my bar mitzvaparsha, also Shabis Hagadol, which is the Shabis that precedes Pesach.
1:59
And the reason it's called Shabis Hagadol and many reasons, we talked about it.
2:02
We have a whole episode on the Jewish Inspiration Podcast discussing why this Shabis is called
2:10
But the most important part is that the Shabis right before Pesach, people would need to
2:16
learn the laws of Pesach.
2:20
As we will see soon in our upcoming episode about the Hagadol, that there's many, many laws
2:28
And this would be an opportunity for the congregation to get together and hear the Rabbi speak and
2:32
share words of inspiration for the holiday, but also laws regarding the performance of
2:40
this great, great, great festival of closeness and connection with Hashem.
2:45
So this week's Parshas, Parshas Sav deals with more of the offerings, but something very,
2:51
very unique is discussed in this Torah portion, aside, of course, for it being my bar mitzvaparsha.
3:01
And my bar mitzvaparsha also being Sav, which is Sadigvav, which is 96.
3:06
There are 96 verses in this Parshas.
3:09
It also has some unique tropes as part of the cancellations that are read.
3:15
It has the Shalshellas, which is one of very few in the entire Torah.
3:20
And it's basically a beautiful Parshas, like every Parshas, but something very, very unique
3:27
in this week's Parshas is the inauguration of the priests, the Kohanim.
3:34
We see something which is really remarkable, so they had to get...
3:38
first is Moshe Gathers, all the people.
3:40
This is in Chapter 8.
3:43
In this week's Parshas, Parshas, Parshas, and Shem says to Moshe Gachas,
3:45
Arun, Vez, Bono, Vez, Vez, Mugadim, Vez, Shemana, Mishra, Take Arun and His sons
3:50
and His garments and the oil of anointment, Shemana, Mishra, Vez, Parachatas and the bull
3:57
of the Sin offering, Veshtehah, Alim and the two Rams, Vesalamatos and the basket of
4:03
And then what happens?
4:04
Viyas Moshe Qash Hatsi Vashem Moshe did exactly with the way Hashem commanded him.
4:08
Vati Kohel or Eid al-Pas Hatsi Vashem Moshe then the entire assembly of the Jewish people gathered at the tent of meeting.
4:15
Viyom or Moshe later and Moshe says to the people, those Hadovar ashrati Vah Hashem Lasos, this is the commandment of the Jewish people.
4:25
Viyakor Moshe is Arun and Moshe brings Aron, Aaron, the High Priest, and his sons, close.
4:32
Viyyir Khatsosomamayem and he washes them down.
4:35
Viyyitin al-Alovis, Kutones, and he puts the garments on them.
4:39
And he puts the aphod, Viyachgros, and he ties the belt.
4:43
Viyyir Khatsosomamayem and he washes them down.
4:46
Viyyitin al-Alovis, Kutones, and he puts the garments on them.
4:49
And he puts the aphod, Viyachgros, and he ties the belt.
4:54
And he puts everything, gets them all dressed up.
4:56
Viyasim al-Alovis, a Khushan, he puts on Aaron, the breastplate.
4:59
Vesurumetumim, all of the incredible aspects, all of the incredible garments of the priests and the High Priest are done.
5:11
Okay, then what happens?
5:13
Viyyikach Moshe, Shamana Mishra, and then Moshe puts the oil of anointment.
5:18
And he anoints the tabernacle and he sanctifies them.
5:24
And then he takes seven sprinkles and anoints the altar.
5:30
And he anoints the utensils and anoints the labor and sanctifies the base, all of it.
5:39
Viyyitsok Shamana Mishra al-Rosh Aron, and he puts the anointing oil on top of the head of Aaron.
5:47
Viyyim Shakhos al-Akacchon, he anoints him to sanctify him.
5:51
Now further, Moshe now gets the children of Aaron dressed.
5:56
And he gets them and then what happens?
5:58
He brings offerings and he takes the blood and he sprinkles the blood on the altar.
6:04
And he sanctifies them.
6:07
And he takes the fat and he takes the innards and he takes the liver and the sterecloius,
6:12
the kidneys, the chalbeum and the fats, and he brings them as an offering to Hashem.
6:18
And then we go a little bit further into verse number, this is chapter 8 in Leviticus.
6:26
And we go to verse number 24, verse number 23.
6:33
And he slaughters it, he slaughters the animal.
6:36
Viyyikach Moshe midauman, Moshe takes of its blood.
6:39
Viyyitin el-Tnuch-Ozan Aron.
6:42
And he places some blood on the middle part of the ear of Aaron, on his right ear.
6:52
There's Bowen Yadu Ayyamanis and he puts the blood on his right thumb,
6:59
Valbona Raghla Yamanis and on his big toe, on his right foot.
7:04
And then Aron does the same for the children of Aaron, on their right ear, on their right hand,
7:12
on their right thumb, and on their right big toe.
7:17
Now, I know that we do a lot of interesting things as Jews.
7:21
I know we do a lot of interesting things.
7:23
You know, we wear it to fill in, you can see someone wearing it to fill in.
7:26
If a Gentile sees a Jew wearing to fill in in the airport, it's interesting.
7:35
You have this box on your head, a box on your arm, opposite your heart.
7:39
It looks a little odd.
7:41
We're used to doing odd things.
7:44
We have four species that we bring together on Sukkot.
7:51
We blow a chauffeur, right?
7:54
That's taken from, from, I mean, we do a lot of interesting things.
7:58
We, Matsu, which is weird.
8:02
Okay, we have a lot of interesting things that are not understandable so easily.
8:07
But you're putting blood on the ear of the Kohane.
8:13
You're putting on his thumb, blood.
8:16
You're putting on his big toe, blood.
8:19
And what in the world is going on here?
8:23
And our Sages ask this question, what in the world is going on here?
8:28
So we have to know a very, very fundamental principle that we have a tendency when we are in a place of leadership
8:43
that we start thinking about ourselves.
8:48
Look what I've accomplished.
8:49
I am a senator, not you.
8:52
I got elected by millions of votes.
8:56
I'm the prime minister.
8:57
I am the member of Knesset, whatever it may be.
9:01
And it gets to your head.
9:04
God recognizes that.
9:07
And God instructs Moshe.
9:10
Place the blood from the offering on their ear, on their thumb, on their big toe.
9:22
What are these things?
9:24
These are the things that are the least essential for your life, for your existence.
9:35
Our core is very important.
9:37
But the edge of your ear, you can live without it.
9:43
The tip of your thumb, you can live without it.
9:46
The tip of your big toe, you can live without it.
9:51
You know what those extremities are?
9:54
Those are the people that are distant from you.
9:58
The core, you, your family, oh, that I'll take care of.
10:02
But how about the people that are at the extremities?
10:05
The people that are further away from you.
10:08
Them you might neglect.
10:11
Hashem says particularly at a moment where you're going to be inaugurated.
10:16
To be elevated, you have to always remember your job is to be there for everyone,
10:24
even those that are far away from you.
10:27
Your job is not to be a taker, your job is to be a giver.
10:31
Your job is not only to be responsible for those who are close to you,
10:34
but to be responsible for those who are far from you.
10:39
You know, one of the things that we mentioned this previously,
10:42
and I think we need to repeat it, we say about a baby when a baby is having his bris.
10:52
can you call this the Torah of Khuppah Massim Tovah?
10:55
Just like he enters into the circumcision into the bond between him and God,
11:06
this baby and God, so he should go to Torah, to study of Torah, to Khuppah,
11:11
with the Massim Tovah and to canopy and to good deeds.
11:18
this little one will be great.
11:23
What does that even mean?
11:26
This little one will be great.
11:29
So we mentioned previously, what does it mean to be great?
11:33
What it means to be great means that you go beyond yourself.
11:39
To be great means to be great.
11:42
You're greater than yourself.
11:45
When you're just yourself, you're small.
11:48
What does this baby know about life?
11:50
This baby knows only one thing.
11:52
Me, me, me, me, me.
11:56
I don't care about people sleeping.
11:59
Total indifference to anyone else.
12:03
I'm thirsty, I cry.
12:07
I'm uncomfortable, I cry.
12:14
That's someone who's small.
12:16
You know what someone big is?
12:18
Someone who thinks beyond themselves.
12:20
Someone who opens up the world to become so much bigger than just me.
12:25
And that's why we bless this little child.
12:27
Zach cotton, he's small.
12:29
He's crying, he's in pain.
12:31
He doesn't care that it's going to wake up his mom and dad.
12:33
He doesn't care about anything.
12:35
Except for himself.
12:37
That's someone who's small.
12:39
You know someone who's big.
12:41
He takes on responsibility for other people.
12:44
And what do we see about someone who takes responsibility
12:47
about other people?
12:49
We see regarding someone who gets married.
12:51
The day a bride and groom get married is considered like Yom Kipper.
12:57
Because they're forgiven of all their sins.
12:59
The day that someone is inaugurated to office,
13:02
to become mayor, to become governor,
13:06
to become a member of the parliament,
13:10
the member of congress, to become a president.
13:14
It's also like Yom Kipper that day.
13:18
And you're forgiven of all your sins, says the Talmud.
13:23
Because you've now graduated from being just me,
13:34
Till now I was a private citizen.
13:35
I take care of myself.
13:36
I worry about myself.
13:38
But now my responsibility is not only for me.
13:41
Now I open up my world to be being responsible for many more people.
13:48
When a person is single, I need to worry about my own laundry.
13:52
I need to worry about my own dinner.
13:54
I know what I like to drink and I know what I like to eat.
13:58
Do I know what my spouse likes to eat?
14:00
Do I know what my spouse likes to drink?
14:02
Do I know when they're tired?
14:04
Do I know when they need something special or unique?
14:09
We need to be in tune beyond ourselves.
14:12
So now you're opening up your world far beyond just being you.
14:19
You know what happens?
14:20
As Shem says, you're forgiven of all your sins.
14:22
Because now you're a different person.
14:23
Till now you were just in it for yourself.
14:25
Now you're way beyond yourself.
14:28
You're a new person.
14:29
You get a new beginning.
14:32
We see this responsibility of going beyond ourselves.
14:36
The problem is how many times and I see this cynicism in your eyes, Gary.
14:41
You're looking and you're saying members of Congress.
14:44
They're the most selfish people on earth.
14:46
They don't care about anybody.
14:49
Because that's what happens when you get into leadership.
14:52
When you get into leadership, it's very easy to forget about your constituents.
14:57
Till you're going to lose the election and then, oh, whatever you want.
15:01
Yes, you're listening so carefully.
15:03
After that, once you're elected, don't know you.
15:06
Don't care about you.
15:07
You need something.
15:08
Sorry. Call the office.
15:10
Nobody's going to return it.
15:14
It's very tempting and very challenging when someone is already in that leadership role
15:21
for them to keep the extremities close.
15:26
You know what the king of the Jewish people needed to do?
15:30
The Torah tells us in Deuteronomy that any king of the Jewish people
15:35
needs to walk with a safer Torah in his hands at all times.
15:40
At all times, not the coin.
15:44
The king holds a Torah scroll.
15:51
Doesn't hold a scepter?
15:56
No, he holds a Torah scroll.
15:59
Because the first thing that's going to happen when you become a king is going to be like,
16:03
ah, what's in it for me now?
16:08
How do I tax the people?
16:10
How do I build a bigger castle?
16:17
No, it's not about you.
16:19
Remember that you're here on a task on a mission to serve Hashem,
16:23
to be there for the people.
16:25
The Torah scroll that you're holding is going to be a constant reminder
16:29
of your responsibility.
16:31
And this is the same thing that the Kohane was reminded with the blood
16:36
that was placed on his ear, placed on his thumb, placed on his toe.
16:44
but it was a public reminder
16:47
for these people who are taking in a new role of responsibility for others.
16:54
You are obligated to be beyond yourself.
16:57
Don't forget your extremities.
17:00
Don't keep it to yourself.
17:04
Don't keep it to yourself.
17:05
Your responsibility, when you become a public servant,
17:09
is to never forget the people you're there to serve.
17:16
it's not about taking, it's about giving.
17:19
A child takes an adult gives.
17:24
That's our responsibility.
17:29
And that's why the Torah so beautifully describes the process of anointing
17:38
the leader of the Jewish people.
17:42
You have the whole procedure.
17:44
And then this weird thing shows up.
17:46
You've got to put some blood on the ears, some blood on the thumb,
17:49
some blood on the big toe.
17:51
Those are the extremities.
17:53
Those are the people you don't realize they're living on the outskirts of your district.
17:59
It's not a big deal.
18:01
Those are the people you're responsible.
18:07
It's interesting that in medicine,
18:09
one of the ways you can tell if the perfusion of oxygen in the body is proper,
18:17
is you go to the extremities,
18:19
and you see what the capillary refill is.
18:22
You see that when you press it, it turns white.
18:24
And then it turns red again.
18:26
It has to be within a certain amount of time that you see that the circulation is proper
18:31
to the furthest place of the body.
18:35
When you go to the furthest person away from you,
18:38
in your district, in your region, in your country,
18:42
and you see how connected they feel.
18:45
If they feel disconnected, you're not doing a good job.
18:49
They need to be part of the circulation.
18:52
They need to be part of it.
18:55
Not that I'm exclusive untouchable.
19:00
And that's what it means to have real greatness.
19:03
That was the job of the Cohen.
19:05
The Cohen was there to represent the Jewish people.
19:07
When he brought offerings,
19:10
he brought it in the name of every single Jew that he was representing.
19:19
I have the privilege of going into the Holy of Holies.
19:21
No, I'm representing an entire people.
19:26
Not just being there for ourselves.
19:28
And in a practical way for each and every one of us,
19:31
if you're not a Cohen,
19:35
who are my responsible for?
19:38
Who do I need to take care of?
19:40
What are my obligations?
19:43
If it's to my spouse, if it's to my children, if it's to my parents,
19:47
if it's to my neighbors, to my friends,
19:50
what am I doing to keep them connected?
19:52
What am I doing to help them feel loved?
19:55
What am I doing to ensure that they are part of this circulation in our life?
20:00
To make sure that no one feels left behind.
20:04
That no one falls off the extremities and into the abyss.
20:09
That's our responsibility.
20:13
Hashem sure bless the soul that we should learn a lesson from this week's Torah portion.
20:16
Particularly when we're going into the holiday of Pesach.
20:19
When we're going to the holiday of Pesach,
20:21
when we experience the Exodus from Egypt,
20:24
together with an entire nation.
20:26
And then we went to Mount Sinai,
20:31
It's one long holiday, our Savior's tell us,
20:37
from Pesach to Shavoot.
20:40
It's one beautiful long holiday.
20:43
We have 48 steps that we're going to be learning together,
20:46
that connect between, and we're going to count the omir,
20:50
that connect between Pesach and Shavoot.
20:57
So it's not just some random idea that they're connected.
21:01
We're going to connect them by learning the 48 ways,
21:04
by seeing, by attaining tools of perfection,
21:09
being ready to receive the Torah as one nation, one soul.
21:14
My dear friends, each and every one of us,
21:17
we have our own Exodus from Egypt that we can experience today
21:24
when we observe the Pesach Seder.
21:29
It's not only back then that they were taken out of Egypt.
21:34
We here today are taken out of Egypt,
21:37
our own little Egypt, our own Maitsar, our own bondage,
21:41
were able to be freed from that as well.
21:44
The greatest way to do that is to be responsible for others.
21:49
Take the responsibility,
21:51
we're it as a badge of honor that you can go beyond yourself
21:55
and be there for somebody else.
21:57
My dear friends, have an amazing Shabbos.
22:00
You've been listening to Rabbi Arya Wolby on a podcast produced by Torch,
22:04
the Torah Outreach Resource Center of Houston.
22:07
Please help sponsor an episode,
22:09
so we can continue to produce more quality Jewish content
22:12
for our listeners around the globe.
22:14
Please visit torchweb.org to donate
22:17
and partner with us on this incredible endeavor.
22:29
I understand there's a fundraiser going on.
22:33
Why would listeners want to donate to Torch
22:38
versus other organizations?
22:41
It's a very, very good question, very valid question.
22:44
I want to tell you something like this, okay?
22:46
Torch is here for one reason.
22:50
Torch is here to share the word of Torah with the world.
22:53
Any one of you listeners out there listening on a podcast,
22:56
listening in a video last year alone.
23:00
Our videos grew, our video exposure grew 295%.
23:06
If I told you that there was an investment in the stock market
23:10
that is going to grow 295%, everyone would invest.
23:15
I am telling you, my dear listeners,
23:17
that last year our YouTube videos alone
23:20
grew 295% by our viewership.
23:25
Our podcast, there are many podcasts that grew
23:29
by well over 200% as well.
23:33
This is a great investment.
23:35
I really believe so.
23:36
I really feel this, my bones.
23:38
I know myself that I keep a very meticulous log
23:42
of all of our videos.
23:44
Last year in 2025, we published 1,092 videos.
23:51
I don't know about you, but I think that's a lot of videos.
23:55
To me, it's an exceptional privilege to be able to teach
24:00
and learn Torah together with so many amazing people,
24:03
not only you here in the room,
24:05
and those of you on Zoom every day,
24:08
but also those listening on the podcasts,
24:10
and those of you watching live online,
24:12
or later online, a video on demand,
24:15
and we're on all these different platforms.
24:17
It's all because we have a foundation here in Houston, Texas,
24:22
where we learn, teach from our Torch Center
24:27
and share that Torah with the world.
24:29
That's just one component.
24:30
We have the Torch Center, we have our Torch Media.
24:33
We also have Torch Wood, which is a Torch community,
24:37
with now 15 families, robust programming,
24:41
for the men, for the women, for the children.
24:43
Every Shabbos, there's over 100 people there,
24:46
for Kiddish and for Davening.
24:48
It's unbelievable what goes on over there.
24:50
And then we have our newest young professional division.
24:54
It's just unbelievable the things that are going on,
24:57
and what we're trying to do is really open up for people
25:01
one time a year, where we ask everyone to invest in Torch.
25:05
This is a time, get in on the ground floor
25:08
because the midst of us that we're trying to do,
25:11
we cannot do without the support of the community.
25:14
That's the honest truth.
25:15
I don't say it as a cliche, oh, we're partners.
25:18
I really, we cannot do it.
25:20
We can't keep these lights on.
25:22
We can't have these cameras.
25:23
We can't do the broadcasting.
25:24
We can't do any of this without the support of our partners.
25:29
And therefore, this one week that you have,
25:32
you can go to givetorch.net, givetorch.net,
25:36
and contribute every dollar that you contribute
25:39
is matched by donors.
25:41
The entire week, the campaign will be up until we reach our goal
25:45
because this is our budget for the year.
25:47
We do everything we can to not stop even a single program
25:52
We continue, all of our classes will be on.
25:55
Our Monday Lunch and Learn will be on.
25:57
Our Monday night, Mr. Mondais will be on.
25:59
Our Tuesday morning classes will be on.
26:01
Tuesday night classes, Wednesday and everything is on.
26:04
Because that's why we're here.
26:07
We're here not to raise money.
26:08
We're here to teach Dora.
26:10
So if y'all would be so kind and generous
26:13
and support us, we'll be able to end this campaign
26:16
just like they did for the temple.
26:19
What happened to the temple?
26:20
They said enough, enough donations.
26:21
I'm ready to do the same.
26:23
Please help us, my dear friends.
26:29
I appreciate your question.
26:30
Now I want to talk about giving to torch.
26:33
We are so blessed that God has given us.
26:38
And it's not just for us.
26:39
It's for the whole world.
26:40
As a matter of fact, our choice being chosen
26:44
is to be a light to the nations.
26:46
To bring Torah to everyone.
26:49
They don't have to all do the commandments.
26:52
But this is, as you have often said,
26:56
the owner's manual for living.
26:59
And for those of us who grew up at a time
27:02
where a good Jewish education was not available to us.
27:06
Now there's a little bit here, a little bit there.
27:09
I am so grateful that I get to come here four times a week.
27:15
But more importantly, as a good friend of mine once said,
27:20
if you could learn everything from a video or a book,
27:23
there would be no universities.
27:25
And here at Torch, not only can you come and participate,
27:30
but even if you can't come, we take people on Zoom
27:37
And I don't know any other organization
27:40
where you can't, you can actually participate
27:44
long distance with a rabbi.
27:46
So studying torch is like trying to eat an elephant.
27:51
You do it one bite at a time.
27:54
How do you learn Torah one bite at a time?
27:58
And that's what you give to us.
28:00
And for all of you out there, not only is this invaluable,
28:04
you couldn't put a dollar value on it.
28:07
But in addition to that, it's always free.
28:12
And the only way it is always free is if you help provide
28:17
the funds that we need with the only ask once.
28:21
You go to some places every single week.
28:24
They pass the pot and try to get money out of you.
28:28
But here, they wait once a year.
28:31
They don't bother you.
28:33
They don't send out a, give me, give me, give me once a year.
28:37
That's all we ask, givetorch.net.
28:40
All my friends are my friends from class and my rabbis.
28:45
They're my friends.
28:46
That is my solicitation from y'all to please contribute.
28:54
Thank you for letting me speak.
28:56
Reporting torch is one of the best things you could possibly do.
28:59
It will change your life.
29:00
Jewish, not Jewish.
29:02
Being part of torch will inspire you, will teach you life lessons,
29:06
and will give you all the tools you need to be successful in life,
29:09
marriage, family, and all areas of your life.
29:12
Support torch if you can.
29:14
We thank you very much.
29:15
I know with confidence that the Almighty will succeed our way
29:19
and we will raise all the money we need to continue to operate.
29:23
But I want you to be part of it.
29:25
And if you can please, whatever donation amount, the smallest, the largest,
29:29
it doesn't make a difference.
29:30
I want you as a partner.
29:31
If you can please go to givetorch.net and donate so that you can be a partner
29:37
in what we're doing.
29:38
I'd greatly appreciate it and I hope you enjoy this episode.
