Today on the LA Report Morning Edition, this week's heat wave is escalating, temperatures

that have the potential to kill.

Over 900 children have died inside hot vehicles since 1998.

The feds won't give up the fight to deport a father of three Marines, despite a judge's

ruling.

A former CHP officer, a cues of murder and a deadly highway crash is set to enter a plea.

I'm McKenna C. Burtson, in for Austin Cross, and this is the LA Report from LA News.

This week's historic winter heat wave begins to peak today, extreme heat warnings kick

in at 10 a.m.

Temperatures between 85 and 95 degrees are expected across the coasts and mountains.

Valleys, deserts, and inland areas could hit triple digits.

Row Shoeenfeld at the National Weather Service says the biggest threat to life this week

may be sitting in your driveway.

Parked cars are one of the main ways that we see fatalities, specifically children

in hot vehicles.

Over 900 children have died inside hot vehicles since 1998.

So it's one of the major killers during heat events.

Shoeenfeld says this will be the hottest period in March since 1988, and temperatures could

break today's record in downtown LA, which is 94 degrees, set back in 1914.

The feds are fighting a judge's decision to toss the deportation case of an OC father

of three Marines.

Last June, Narciso Barranco was aggressively arrested by immigration agents outside

a Santa Ana eye hop.

This month, a judge just missed his case, and now the federal government is appealing

that decision.

A move that Barranco's attorney, Lisa Vasquez, says has frozen his path towards legal status.

Because of the appeal, he will have neither the parole in place nor will his eligibility

for his green card move forward.

Barranco's family says they'll keep fighting until he's a legal permanent resident.

Two defendants, including a former CHP officer, are set to be arraigned for murder today,

and last summer's deadly crash on the 605.

Angelo Rodriguez is accused of driving 130 miles per hour when he slammed his patrol

car into a vehicle of four people.

Instead of helping or turning on his lights, prosecutors say he pulled off the road, and

that's when another speeder crashed into the same car.

These cases are some of the hardest cases I have to talk about.

Cases where this horrible tragedy could have been prevented had this officer not been

driving at ridiculously high speeds for no reason whatsoever.

That second driver is accused of being drunk.

All four victims died at the scene.

Coming up, a beloved theater with a 57-year history could soon be torn down and replaced

with high rises.

But it's not a done deal yet.

The beloved theater at the hub of the Newport Beach Film Festival is facing demolition

to make way for high-rise towers.

The Big Newport Theater opened in 1969, but the City's Planning Commission has approved

a pair of 22 floor towers that will house 150 condos.

Property owner Jim Edwards says a theater's popularity has been winging.

The theater attendance has declined every year for the last 20 years.

And of course, COVID decimated the business, which hasn't recovered since then.

There are already a pair of appeals that Newport Beach will hear next month.

And for some hoops, the Lakers beat the Houston Rockets 100-92 last night for their sixth

straight win.

Luka Donchitch had 36 points.

Meanwhile, the Clippers lost to the San Antonio Spurs 119-115.

Darius Garland had 25 points in the loss and Kauai Leonard missed the game with a springed knee.
