Welcome to the Sports Media Podcast. I'm your host Richard Dutch, my producer's Patrick
2:01
Antonetti. This is the first look where we give you a little bit of a taste of the upcoming
2:08
longer form podcast that we're going to do. Our guest on this first look is Kenzie Malone.
2:14
She is the TSN Bureau reporter in Montreal covering the Montreal Canadians.
2:21
But for these purposes, she was the lead play by playboys for CBC's coverage of the women's
2:26
Olympic hockey tournament. So she called the gold medal game between the US and Canada
2:31
and all of the women's tournament in Canada. A really outstanding young broadcaster also calls
2:37
the PWHL. She wanted their lead broadcasters. You've heard her on the finals if you are in Canada.
2:44
And so this is a really a significant women's hockey expert. So I ask Kenzie if she thinks
2:49
there will be a carryover of momentum from the interest in the women's Olympic hockey tournament
2:56
to the PWHL. Because this is always interesting as to whether these sports, whether it's the
3:02
basketball or hockey, the team sports. Like if people are really into the Olympic coverage,
3:10
will they ultimately move from that Olympic coverage if they're not diehards in the NHL
3:14
in the NBA and then watch those leagues afterwards? So in our first look, Kenzie and I get into that
3:21
discussion, the full podcast will be out on Wednesday, March 11th.
3:30
I think ideally you always want to believe the Olympics are a showcase for your sport. And in
3:36
this case, it was a great showcase for women's hockey. What doesn't always happen though is that
3:42
the people who are into the watching the Olympics is the same for the men's side by the way in hockey.
3:47
They don't necessarily then go to the league and start following and being
3:52
ardent fans of the league. Sometimes it's sort of just the one-off because you're into the
3:55
nationalism and the patriotism and the stuff like that. But I do think for the PWHL, there's more of
4:02
an opportunity for the NHL because it's not as old a league. There's still a lot of people who've
4:06
never seen women's hockey. And if you watch the Olympics, you might have been like, wow, the skill
4:10
level of this game is incredible. So I wonder just from your perspective, understanding that you
4:14
call games for the league, do you think there will be a carryover from the Olympic Games and
4:20
the success of that tournament into the PWHL? Yeah, I think we're already seeing it. The New York
4:25
sirens who play in Prudential Center and have historically had a low attendance record just hit
4:32
first high. I think it was over 8,500 fans came out to their home game recently and that was
4:38
a new record attendance for them. Now, can you say that that is a direct relation of the Olympics?
4:45
I can't connect those dots, but you have to think just thematically and based on what you're
4:49
saying. Yes, it's drawing in more fans to want to not only maybe watch the games, but to attend the
4:55
game. So in terms of the viewership numbers, an increase there, but we're certainly seeing it
5:01
translate in terms of attendance numbers. I think what made this Olympics and that narrative
5:08
be successful is because for the first time after an Olympics fans now can go watch these athletes
5:14
on a regular basis. So just because of that sheer opportunity now, I think we're seeing it translate
5:19
because before it was these women come out of the woodworks, they compete and it's historic and
5:26
it's oh my gosh, the sochi Olympics. How did Canada do that? How did they come back and win?
5:30
And then they go back into hiding for four years and then they appear again and it's amazing
5:34
and shiny and oh my goodness. And then they disappear. So now there's no more disappearing.
5:38
And there's a place for fans across Canada and the United States to go and watch these women
5:44
on a regular basis. And we're seeing that. I think you look at the attendance numbers for these
5:50
upcoming games at Madison Square Gardens and at TD Gardens. The league has announced those games
5:55
as being sellouts. So those alone again, I think are building off of what we saw at the Winter
6:02
Olympics. And I think to that point of fans being more engaged now because of how great
6:08
these games were. We also had educated fans for maybe what the first time. So fans knew a lot of
6:15
these names coming in and we're interested to see the storylines of oh, they've been quiet in
6:21
the regular season. Can they find a way to get back to their scoring at the Olympics? And
6:26
that narrative now following, you know, who who who got a jump from that Winter Olympics? And
6:31
I'll use our John Wilson, the Swedish forward as an example was remarkable with the Swedish national
6:36
team bringing that experience now to the Toronto Sceptors scored two goals, her first two goals in
6:42
the PWHL following that Olympics. So there's an example of an athlete that that Olympic Games
6:48
allowed her to elevate her style of play and bringing it back to the PWHL. So I think there's
6:54
something to be said about how the international landscape the IHF needs the PWHL. And I also
7:01
think the PWHL needs the IHF. They need international competitions as well. So we see them work hand
7:07
in hand now. The woman's world has shifted to a November time slot to accommodate the league
7:12
because it's challenging. We see it in the NHL to break for an entire month and then pick back up
7:18
and keep going for a playoff push. So the the IHF and the PWHL are working hand to hand to make
7:24
sure these athletes are set up for success and the best possible schedule can be available for
7:30
these athletes. All right back in the studio. My thanks to Kenzie. As I said again the full podcast
7:34
will be out on Wednesday, March 11th. Check that out, especially if you're into women's professional
7:40
hockey, head to the archives. I won't go through all of them, but we had some really, really good
