Florida Union Victory, Alabama Restrictions: Teacher Union Reforms

The Freedom Foundation scored a major victory in Florida with a new law that shakes up

teacher unions.

It requires at least half the members in any bargaining unit to vote each year just to

keep the union certified.

This change, pushed by Governor Ron DeSantis and backed by federal education leaders, aims

to ensure unions truly represent the majority.

Florida's old rules let unions hang on even without broad support, often favoring a

vocal minority of teachers.

The bill passed right at the end of the legislative session, marking a quick win for reform efforts.

In Alabama, educators face a tight restriction on leaving their union.

They can only stop payroll dues deductions during the last ten work days in July, and

it has to be in writing to their department's payroll clerk.

Another issue is that staff with the Alabama Education Association get placed in the state's

retirement system pension, vesting alongside, public, employees.

By highlighting these problems, the foundation hopes to rally teachers and taxpayers to urge

lawmakers for fairer rules across the board.
