Is somebody in the room or did they all hear you?
Alex, who's in the room?
I'm Alex.
And coach.
Hi.
Your other sister, Zoe Thompson.
Do you think there's a world where we would see all three of you playing together?
Or is that like far off, do you think?
There could be a time.
I'll always think of her as a baby.
But she definitely could, which is the crazy part.

In the meantime, here is Giselle Thompson.
Hi everybody, welcome back to Friendly's.
I'm your host Sam US and today I am joined by a young player who in such a short amount of time
has gone from promising rookie to one of the most impressive offensive defenders in
not just the enemy cell, but the whole world.
She brings speed and precision to every touch and honestly, every TikTok.
Please welcome back to the show Angel City's own Giselle Thompson.
Hey, thank you so much.
Oh my gosh, I'm so excited to chat.
I was really happy to hear that you'd be coming back on because we have a lot to catch up on,
including your place on Emma Hayes's national team squad within the she believes cup.
I knew the first thing I wanted to ask you was what have you been cooking?
I remember you told me last time that you love to cook and I want to hear all about what you're
up to in the kitchen.
Okay, so right now, Claire M'sley's husband is a chef.
So he's been making a lot of my meals because I've been really into nutrition lately and like just
this season because I've been working on like being on the field for longer minutes and trying
not to get injured, injury prevention.
So I've been working a lot around that and he's been making it so easy to just cook meals fast.
We're just so helpful because after training, I'm so exhausted and I'm like,
I just want to lay down and not have to clean dishes.
But I have been doing a lot of baking and I baked chocolate chip cookies for our team and they're
gone literally within seconds and then everyone's mad at me because I didn't make it up cookies.
Do you have like a okay one the chef, the whole thing sounds amazing.
But too, do you have any like you know how everybody has their own chocolate chip cookie recipe
and they're like you have to do this like do you have one of those?
I do. I like perfected the recipe but I don't want to like give away the secret.
Give away my secrets.
I don't blame you at all. I like love that.
Maybe you can send it to me privately.
I don't know.
My husband is also like a cook and he like has to refrigerate his chocolate chip cookies before
baking them. Yeah. That also helps a lot.
Okay. I can do the other.
Yeah. Don't say the other.
I would never I would never want you to expose it.
I personally have been on my roast chicken game.
Like my New Year's resolution was to like perfect roasting like a whole chicken.
Have you over tried that?
No, it sounds hard though.
Well, I thought it sounded hard too.
That's why I gave myself literally a whole year to do it.
And like I'm honestly I'm honestly pretty good at it now.
So like it's darn as hard as it sounds.
It's actually really easy and so good.
And then you have like leftover chicken for the week.
It's like a really good like hack.
Yeah. We do like like juicy chicken or like more dry.
I like I like juicy.
I definitely like juicy chicken, but like I want the skin to be crispy.
Yeah. Yeah.
What do you like chicken?
No, I know some people like like more dry chicken and it just isn't my vibe.
That's why I'm like no.
I feel like I probably like in my cooking life have a tendency to like overcook the chicken
and make the chicken, but like I would definitely prefer to be juicy.
Okay. Um, chicken, cookies, everything aside.
I actually, I'm definitely going to circle back to that nutrition thing that you brought
up because I'm fascinated by that.
But I want to check it on like where you are today.
We're talking just a few days after the she believes cup.
The US women's national team won that tournament.
You didn't give up a single goal and you just actually got your first cap
at last year as she believes tournament.
In between, you've gotten a lot more experience,
several more callups with the national team.
How did this year's tournament feel different for you?
This year's tournament, I feel like I had to prove myself a lot more.
I know I was kind of in the in between of you 23s and the women's national team.
But I think something that kind of motivated me more was being able to see Alyssa during the
camps as well.
I feel like we don't see each other a lot, so those times that we do get together is like one of
the best. Um, I think I also just have grown a lot throughout the year of just being a player
in general. Um, I've obviously been said this, but like working on more minutes and playing
90 and I think I was really proud of myself after this.
She believes because I did two 90s in a row, which I haven't done in so long.
So just being able to keep my body recovered and just play my best in both of those 90 minutes
was something that I was really proud of.
And honestly, like going into that, I didn't really think I could do that in the moment.
But I think it was just like proving to myself I can do like I can't play 90 minutes two times
and do hard things, which just gave me more confidence in the moment and being able to play
not even just the right side, but also the left side was kind of something that gave the coaches
like I can be trusted in more than one position and being able to play with Alyssa was like it's so
crazy because last year we played together too on the right side. So just seeing the difference
of how we've grown over the years in both of these tournaments is kind of crazy.
I it's so cool to hear you say all of that. You have grown so much Alyssa has grown so much seeing
the journey you've both been on in just the past year. It gives me like butterflies thinking
about where you'll be in another year, which is like crazy to even say, but I love that one of the
things that you know motivated you and inspired you to be with the full the full national team all
the time is seeing your sister. We're going to talk a little bit more about Alyssa like later in
the show, but how was this past camp being back with her again? Obviously she's living in London
playing for Chelsea. You guys used to be in Angel City together. I know how hard the distance can
be. So how was it being in camp together? Yeah, it's always so fun. I feel like people think we talk
more than we do, but honestly, we don't talk over the phone. We don't face time that much.
Like we text here and there, but honestly, like only see each other. It's like no time has passed.
And whenever we're together, we laugh about the most random things and we can't control ourselves.
So we'll just be laughing in meetings where we have to calm down because this is like,
this is business. We have to be serious. But like seeing each other is always the best.
Oh my gosh. I know. Well, I can definitely relate on like the long distance sister relationship.
It's so hard. Something I loved seeing in this, she believed sort of it was actually you guys playing
on the same side of the field together. You had so much chemistry. And only a handful of times
did my sister, Christine, I play on the field together at the same time. One time she even like
assisted a goal that I scored, which was so cool. Do you and Alyssa like get along on the field?
Do you talk tactics when you're hanging out or do you feel like you just kind of naturally have
chemistry? I think we naturally have chemistry. I think off the field, we don't really like to
talk a lot about soccer. It's more just like how we're doing and just like we want to be more than
just soccer kind of people. So we're just like laughing about the most random things. And then on the
field, I feel like just having an older sister, I feel like she's always like hard on me. So she's
telling me what to do and kind of helping me through it as well, which is really nice because
she's been there obviously longer than me. So she knows a way around things. So it's nice to have
her to be somebody that can help me just be better on the field. Yeah, that's incredible. It's so
crazy and so special to have your sister there with you in that environment. And I think that
in a lot of ways, it adds that comfortability, that little piece of home that kind of helps you
perform even better. And looking back on this, she believes you said you played two 90 minute games
in a row. You had such a great tournament. Head coach Emma Hayes had awesome things to say about your
performance in those games. She said that her mission for you was to make you a more durable player.
And now that I'm kind of picking up on here and you talk about playing two 90 minute games back
to back working on your nutrition, what does that mean for you? And when you hear Emma Hayes say
that, what does that make you want to do? Yeah, I think it just gives me so much more confidence.
I think just this like this whole off season, I've been working on trying to be that durable player
because that was a big thing that they wanted to see from me. And to now being able to do that,
I think I'm just trying to get more confident in my right back position left back and
being able to be a player that they can trust not just for durability, but a trustworthy defender
in the back line. Yeah, I mean, great answer. I think, you know, obviously durability I'm thinking,
yes, the ability to play 90 minutes to do that back to back. But also like the national team and
playing in the international game is physically such a different level. You're so fast. You have
such precision technically, but you've really brought a physicality lately to your tackles as well.
And obviously you are a smaller player, but I think about like Crystal Dunn was a smaller player
and Crystal Dunn was one of the most physically dominant players in the game. In what ways have you
kind of embraced, you know, what you are working with and kind of turned everything that you're good
at and everything that you have into your strength? Yeah, I think obviously you can't really change
like how tall you are, how big you are, but yeah, I was definitely working on obviously with the
nutrition. It's just like eating more and having more fuel for me to stay on the field, but also like
in the gym, lifting more and wanting to be that player that obviously since I'm a defender,
just like winning those 1v1 battles or not being able to let them turn, just sending my ground in
those positions. But I think it's so helpful, like having such an amazing like center box as well,
like knowing that they have my back, even if I do get beat, like they'll be there for me and
having that support is something that just helps me on the field. Hi, it's Sam US of the Women's
Game Podcast. If you listen to or are listening to good vibes FC right now, you'll know I absolutely

one of them. Oli Pop can be found all across America in stores like Walmart, Target, Costco,
Kroger, Whole Foods, HB and Publix. Thank you to Oli Pop and all our listeners for supporting
the women's game. Obviously, there's such, you know, difficult competition on the US women's
national team for that roster that is coming up next summer. I'm curious when you look at your own
game. What is it that you see that you bring that special to the team? And how are you trying to
kind of build on that and showcase that both in the national team environment, but also in your
club play? Something that is a really good quality of mine is just getting up the field a lot.
Like I am a defender, but I feel like I am a very attacking defender. I feel like I play
like right wing and right back at the same time. I think I've just been working on like getting
into the final third and getting those 1v1s, but I think something I also do have to work on is
my crossing and finding those players just that execution in the final third. But I think like
that is just like an amazing quality that I've been working on not just in club, but also on
the women's national team in like the Canada game. I was on the left side getting high while
Alyssa was checking in the pocket and vice versa. So just continuing to keep that in like my game
and being consistent in that. Yeah, for sure. I mean seeing you and Alyssa work together,
especially in that game, it was so fun for everybody. Emmae has even joked about your other
sister Zoe Thompson. She's playing with the U14 team. I know she's younger than you guys, but
do you think there's a world where we would see all three of you playing together? Or is that
like far off, do you think? No, honestly, I feel like there could be a time which is crazy for
me to even think about because I feel like that's in such a long time. And also I feel like I'll
always think of her as a baby because she's my little sister. So it's so hard to think that she
could play with us one day. But she definitely could, which is the crazy part. How old is she now?
She's 14. Okay. All right. I mean, I mean, I wouldn't let that be 30. She'll be 24. I mean,
yeah, even like three years, five years, I think it all sounds very reasonable. Obviously, I know,
all, you know, hopefully the three Thompson sisters are playing together soon. But I think that,
you know, in this phase is my last question about the national team. And then I want to talk
Angel City, the World Cup is, you know, less than a year and a half away. I know that you are
fighting really hard for a spot on that team. But I know, of course, you're focusing on your club play,
the next camp, just everything in that process and taking it one thing at a time. But when you do
kind of dream about the future, how do you kind of just tune out the noise and focus on what you
have to do to get better each day in order to make that roster? Yeah, well, I think whenever I'm
going to camp, I just focus on those camps. I feel like I don't have a spot on the roster yet.
So I'm just focusing on how I can prove that I can be a key player on this team or be in the starting
lineup for left back or right back. I think each camp, I'm trying to prove myself and show that
I do belong here. So it starts with club, obviously, and proving that I am or have a key role on
the team. And I can not only do that on the club, but also in the women's national team. Well,
perfect transition. I want to talk about your club environment now. Angel City is going to be your
third season with the team. You're also from LA. So this is like kind of your hometown club. And
you and I are speaking just after the home opener where Angel City dominated and won four to
nothing, which was such an exciting start to the season. But this episode is going to drop next
week after your second game against BFC. Right now, how would you say the vibe is?
Okay, I feel like the vibe is so good. I think we have such a young, like youthful energy on our
team. And since we all are really like young, I think we get along so well. We have a lot of
new players, rookies, and just players from other teams. So I think this whole preseason was so nice
to be able to connect with each other and get our tactics and be all on the same page.
And I think we've just found this connection with each other in chemistry. Like there's no drama.
And it's just like such good vibes and like positive energy all around that is the best. I hope
that lasts forever for you. When a team is clicking like that, it feels so good. It's fun to go into
training. You do get better results. I know that the team has changed a lot since last season. Head
coach Alexander Strauss came in last season and brought with him, I think a little bit of a
different playing style, maybe more similar to his time at Bayern Munich. But it took a little bit
for him and the team to adapt because he kind of came in the middle of the season. Do you think that
now the team and your coach have had just more time together to get on the same page and you're
able to execute what it is that he's looking for? Yeah, for sure. And I also think he tried to put
in those tactics last year as well. It was just very hard because of all of the movement of
different players and new coaching staff and just a lot of movement throughout like the club. But
I think that kind of helped with this year's preseason and already having some level of knowledge
on what we wanted to achieve. Just helping each other out and communicating what we need from each
other. And it's not going to be perfect all the time, but knowing that we have each other and the
support behind one another. I think just gives us more confidence in how we press and how we play.
I mean, afford a nothing win to start the season, you know, says so much about your team's
off season and preseason. And also I think showed a lot of the identity that your team can have
and can play with. How would you describe the kind of soccer that your coach, Alexander Strauss
and that your club wants to play? Yeah, I think we just want to be dominant in all the aspects of the
game, like defending, attacking. When we win the ball, we want to switch the field and just keep
going out there back blind. But always having those high pressing moments and just being connected
as a team. And I think also just being consistent. I think last year also, we were dominant in a lot
of the last couple of games, but we didn't get the wins that we wanted because we weren't finishing our
chances. So I think we focused a lot on finishing what we need to in front of the goal and getting
those opportune movies that we can and just capitalizing on that. Yeah, for sure. I'm so excited
for you guys and looking forward. I feel like it could be Angel City's year. I'm just saying,
I'm really, really excited to see. I know. Well, wait, tell me more. Tell me more about how it feels.
Yeah, I feel like we just started off so strong and obviously you never know because it is such
a long season, but I don't think going into my third year, I've never felt this like energy
from the team that I've ever been on. It just feels like we want to win and we're dominating all
of our chances. So it's just like a different energy from all of the years past. I mean, okay,
I'm psyched. Like a lot of us here at the women's game are big fans of Angel City and it feels
like it's time. So we are ready for it. I know that, you know, a lot of things have changed. Some real
faces of the team, Kristen Press and Ali Riley retired in the off season. So I guess, you know,
looking into this kind of new era of Angel City, who are some of the players who've stepped up to fill
those leadership roles? Yeah, well, I think Sarah has always been like one of our leaders. I think
everyone trusts her and her knowledge and experience on the field, but also Emily Sam's. She's
had so much experience in just like the women's national team and just being such an amazing
key player that Orlando had. So I think she was such an amazing addition to our team and I feel like
she just fits right in. Like I love her. Like we've gotten close so fast, which is so nice to have
somebody just like connect with you and also just like her experience and being able to talk to her
on some things that I can work on and the communication there is just so easy all the time.
New balance is a brand I've loved daily for my whole life. Let's see if I can love them more
than now, an official sponsor of the MIB media network. And as it turns out, I'm not the only
elite footballer that sponsoring these days, but Kyosaka, Hendrick, Eberich Yeze, Jeremy Frimpong,
legendary Hammer's Rodriguez, and our own beloved Tim Weyer. They're all riding with new balance
these days with the biggest summer in soccer, fast approaching. I can't wait to see their incredible
footballers pay their path on the world's biggest stage, whether it's Hendrick cutting up opponents
in his tekelas or Bukayosaka, banging goals left and right in his furons. We're here for it all,
grab yourself a pair today at newbalance.com slash soccer.
I also know another big change that Angel City has gone through is that your sister Alyssa
moved from LA to London to play for Chelsea. Of course, we were all so happy for her and Alyssa
has had such incredible success there. Don't worry, he's leaving. He's leaving. Of course,
he comes in right when I started asking about Alyssa leaving. Okay, look, we all, of course,
are so excited for Alyssa. She's had such incredible success there, but I imagine it was,
you know, bittersweet in some ways for you, your sister who you've lived with, played with,
done a lot of brand deals with, is kind of going off and doing this new thing. Obviously,
I imagine that you miss her, but how do you remember feeling when she first told you she was going to go?
Honestly, it didn't feel real at the time. I feel like it happened so fast that I wasn't going
to believe it until it actually happened. I think it was such an amazing move for her and we knew
like eventually we were going to be on different teams, so I just didn't think it was going to come
so fast, but I think we needed it. I feel like whenever we were together, I kind of had her talk
for both of us, which now that she's away, I kind of found my own voice and found who I was as a
person as well. And then when we come back together, it's always such an amazing bond that we have.
So it was definitely something that I think we both needed.
I was actually going to ask about that because I know you're not like the little sister, you're
the middle sister, but as a younger sister of my sister, I felt a lot in high school like
similar, like she would speak for us, or I was Christie's little sister, or I don't want to say
I like followed her around, but I think that I played a role because she was there. And
when she went away to college, I didn't really have to like maybe play that role anymore,
and so I kind of came into my own. And it sounds like maybe you're experiencing something similar.
Yeah, I think just her, I feel like I trust her opinion. So whenever she made decisions, I was like,
yeah, let's just, let's just do that whatever you think. So now that I am by myself and to kind
of figuring out who and what I want, it's kind of nice for me to kind of just develop as a person
and just be more like confident in what I want. Yeah, well, I love that. I think that kind of leads us
directly into the same week that Alyssa left Angel City, you signed a contract extension to stay
in LA. Talk to us a little bit about how that timing felt, making that big decision, making that
commitment just as you yourself, Giselle. Yeah, I think it was super important for me to
make this decision just like off of what I wanted and what was going to help me develop as a player.
I think just being in LA, it's going to help with my development and my playing time and
just growing as a player. I still need to work on a lot of things for the national team. So
I think Angel City is just like an amazing place to help me grow as a player and a person.
That's so awesome. And I know that you and Alyssa are like always supporting each other.
Right after she left, you actually showed up to an Angel City game in her Chelsea jersey.
And then I think she came to Angel City's last home game. I know you said, and I imagine going
from living together and playing together every day to now she's in London, you're in LA,
you're not based timing all the time. How has that changed your relationship day to day?
Obviously, it's also very hard because of the time difference. So it's hard to even talk to her.
And also watch her games. A lot of them are like 2 a.m. 1 a.m.
It's really hard, but I think we'll always be supportive of each other and I'll watch the
highlights and I know she scores all the time. So I'm just super proud of all the things that she
accomplishes and I know she's proud of everything that I accomplish as well.
That's really sweet. I know I feel the same about my sister. My sister obviously also lives in
London. The time change is not great. Have you been to visit her in London yet?
I have like right before camp of last year, but it's just like really hard with our schedules.
So it's really hard. I know. It's really really hard. I know. And it's like freezing over there.
So I don't really know if that's like the best place to visit.
Well, I love that you guys are like each other's biggest fan. I think that that relationship
is obviously like the most special one. And so I love watching you guys support each other.
So a few other of your angel city teammates that I want to touch on, you know, we talked about
a few players who have left, but to your point about Emily Sam's, you've had a few new faces
join the team as well. Emily Sam's was actually just recently our guest on this very show and she
had talked, you know, so highly about the team. And I have actually seen you in her comments on
social media encouraging her journey to maybe get out there a little bit more and be a little
bit more active. Tell us a little bit about, you know, your relationship with Emily and what
it's like to have her around, especially on that backline with you. Yeah, it's amazing to have her
like on the backline with me. I think she's always somebody that I can rely on to kind of clean up
my messes in a way. But also like I think she's just such a fun like young energy as well. Like
I'll always make jokes with her. And you just know when somebody can just joke around with you.
And that's the type of person she is. Like she knows when to be serious, but also how to have fun.
And like that's the relationship we have. And I just think like she has so much content that she
just doesn't post. And that's why I just encourage her. Yeah, just get it out there doesn't have to be
perfect. That's what I'm saying. She just like, no, like Sam, I'm just like, I'm like, well, maybe
it's just because I'm like a little bit younger. Like I don't really care. Actually, I don't really
know. I'm just like, just do whatever you got it. Nobody here. You guys are so brave. I love
that you're just out there posting. It is so cool. And just keep encouraging, just keep encouraging us.
We will. We'll get it. Okay. You also this season is also the return of a very special
player, Savvy King. Savvy for our listeners who may not know how to cardiac emergency on the
field in an angel city game last year. She's only 21. She's worked her way back to being able to play.
She she came back onto the field last weekend. And everybody was so happy. Savvy looks like she's
having so much fun. What has that journey with Savvy been like for your team and how does it feel
to have her back? It's amazing to have her back. Like I've known Savvy ever since I was like maybe 10
or 11. We ran track together and we also played on like club teams together when we were a lot younger.
So just knowing that how she's developed as a player and how she can just come back from that
is so amazing. I think it just shows like how strong she is as a person. And I think she's always
there for everyone else. So being able to be there for her too was kind of something you can't
really get back. Like everyone loves Savvy and you could just tell by the way like she interacts
with people and how everyone is around her. Like she's that's like a loving person and a loving
spirit. So being able to have her on the back line you just can trust like she'll get to that
ball and she'll make those light tackles and those last plays where you really need it. And
obviously you could tell like from this past weekend she made a tackle that was really needed. So
I think it's always so amazing to see like such an amazing player have the opportunity to play again.
Yeah I know everybody here at the women's game is so so so happy for her. And I know it's
going to be a big season for Angel City. Angel City's fifth year in the league. The club has only
made playoffs once but I know that this is a club that has the kind of fan base and excitement
and investment that I feel like every end of the cell club aspires to have. So what are your goals
for the team and for yourself in 2026? I think for the team I think just being able to make playoffs
in getting far into that. I think that's a big one especially not making playoffs last year.
But individually I think just getting more assists and more chances on goal. I feel like I'll
get more chances on goal this year. So just finishing those chances and being consistent as a team.
I love all that. Okay last question your hometown of LA will be one of the host cities for
this summer's men's world cup. The US men's team is actually starting their campaign at so
if I stadium and obviously LA is like such a great soccer city. It's such a great place to kick off
the tournament. But what I want to know from you Giselle is if people are going to LA for the men's
world cup as a foodie as our like resident food girl where should they go to eat? Okay I have
different places. So if you want to tell Ian go to John and Vinnie's if you want Mushi go to
Yume and then if you want like steak go to Boulevard. Okay another sushi place is Thai show.
Okay I have so many good places it's like really good. I mean keep them coming let us know I
want to go to all of them. Yeah sounds so good. Yeah there's there's too many to choose from honestly.
Okay well I love that it sounds like you really can't go wrong if you're going to LA.
Giselle this was so fun to catch up I'm so glad we got to do this and I'll be cheering for you all
season thank you so much thank you all so much for listening Giselle is so sweet and
I can really tell she's coming into her own both with Angel City and with the national team
this year. I loved hearing about how she's fueling her body to become more durable and play more
minutes consistently that's such an important journey for a young player to go through and also
as a younger sister I'm just rooting for her I relate so much to the idea that younger siblings
need time and space to figure out who they are in their own and I'm so excited to see Giselle
continue to grow I'm a big big fan before we let you all go we've got our linked up voicemail
of the week presented by Verizon each week we want to hear from you so call and leave us a voicemail
at 855-611-4050 and you could be featured on a future episode of Friendlies here's our caller
this week. Hey Sam this is Amber from Galita California my favorite teams the US Women's National
team of course and if I had a second it would be Angel City a big love to them my question is
you just explained the inverted seven and I just learned so much and appreciate it but I would
also love to hear what it means to be playing a false nine sometimes I hear seven plays
in playing the nine but then they're playing a false nine could you explain that term I'd love
to hear your insight thank you bye hi Amber first of all thanks so much for listening I can tell
you're staying all the way to the end of the pods too which I so appreciate so a few weeks ago we
got that great question about an inverted seven which I explained to basically mean that while
the player starts as a winger on paper maybe you know their player profile or maybe tactics for
that game causes them to float inside a lot and they become almost like another 10 similarly a
false nine as a player who's technically playing striker but maybe their tendency is to play more
like a 10 Cap Macario does this sometimes even someone like Viv Medema they can play up top as the
nine but the way they play they're checking back to the ball a lot they're playing back to goal
they're combining in the midfield they're kind of like a nine slash 10 which you know in some
tactical setups it would be called a false nine or that's the style they would play in that position
I think it's fun to pair a false nine profile player with a 10 who's gonna make a lot of runs
in behind because it just makes that area in front of goal so unpredictable you have that push pull
you have them working off of each other when I think about like a more traditional nine somebody who's
not playing a false nine that's somebody like Sophia Wilson or Sam Kerr they can play back to goal
and they're great at holding the ball up but they're also more likely to be making those runs
in behind themselves stretching the back line being in front of goal to score themselves more often
than they're going to be doing anything else this is such a great question and I love talking about
stuff like this and kind of you know seeing which players kind of fit into which profile and
which kind of formations and and tactical adjustments work well together so keep these questions
coming this was such a great one thank you so much Amber that was our linked up voicemail of the
week presented by Verizon if you want to join us for this segment the banana phone is always open
