Teamworkiners, Deborah Egrillin here.
0:02
And I'm Keith Smith and we host the MPN Meta Marketing Show,
0:06
which is not just another marketing podcast,
0:08
but the marketing podcast about all the other marketing podcasts.
0:11
Podcasts are booming right?
0:13
We love them and people actually listen.
0:16
They don't scroll, they don't swipe.
0:18
Well, except maybe during the anthrax.
0:21
But here's the secret.
0:22
With the marketing podcast network,
0:23
your ads don't make people hit skip.
0:25
We put your brand on shows that people actually want to hear.
0:29
That's right, we match your message with podcasts
0:32
that make marketing nerds like us perk up and take notes,
0:35
or at least nod knowingly pretending they understand.
0:38
And don't worry because we'll deliver your ad naturally.
0:41
People might even think that we love your brand personally,
0:44
which of course we totally do,
0:45
unless it's a veggie smoothie, then maybe not.
0:48
It's you want your brand to heard
0:49
without making listeners roll their eyes.
0:52
Head to marketingpodcasts.net and catch marketing fans
0:55
at work, rest and play.
0:57
Seriously, your audience is already listening.
0:59
Make sure they hear your brand and not our awkward jokes.
1:03
Join the conversation because good ads shouldn't just be tolerated.
1:07
They should be enjoyed.
1:10
You're listening to Entrepreneurs Enigma, a podcast about the ups and downs
1:29
of the entrepreneurial journey.
1:31
Every week your host Seth Goldstein interviews entrepreneurs
1:34
from all walks of life about their entrepreneurial journeys,
1:37
from store owners to Fortune 500 CEOs,
1:41
we all have stories to tell.
1:43
So sit back and join us for the next 20 or so minutes
1:46
while we explore the entrepreneurial world.
1:59
Hey everyone, welcome to another edition
2:02
of the Entrepreneurs Enigma podcast.
2:04
I am Seth, as always, with podcast mastery Goldstein media.
2:09
And today I have a buddy of mine, Taylor May.
2:11
This is his second appearance in the podcast.
2:14
And this is good to show how you can take a side hustle
2:16
to your main hustle.
2:18
Because when he first discovered Taylor,
2:22
he was a budding side hustler on the security,
2:26
well, it was more of a security podcast SVIP, wasn't it?
2:30
And you were kind of just kind of
2:31
more of an influence play building stuff out now.
2:35
Taylor is the founder and CEO, which he's always been,
2:38
but of security VIP SVIP, Austin and As,
2:41
a research from dedicated to the version
2:44
the gap between manufacturers and users
2:46
in the security industry.
2:48
And he's been at this for 12 plus years.
2:50
So he isn't a fly by night guys and I have some ideas.
2:56
And so Taylor, when did you go full force into this?
3:01
Yeah, man, it was about, so actually in my birthday,
3:06
September or six months ago, it was like a goal,
3:09
goal from mine to make it full time.
3:10
And I was able to, the bootstrapped to the point
3:13
where I was able to financially support the family
3:16
and got the wife blessing.
3:18
And that's key, that's key.
3:21
Yeah, so I got the approval from her
3:23
and I took it full time in September of last year, man.
3:25
And best part is now, Kate is joining the company.
3:31
That's right, full time.
3:32
She'll be the chief strategy officer of the company.
3:35
She's been, she's already been working full time
3:38
this plus, you know, yeah, just behind the scenes.
3:40
Being in mom, being of your two adorable kids.
3:46
His daughter, her daughter, for better or for worse,
3:47
is a, is a pretty diverse of Taylor.
3:51
Oh my gosh, she looks just like you.
3:55
My son, I tell my, I tell, I tell Kate,
3:57
like, he looks nothing like me.
3:58
He looks like, what is he, what is he, what is he like?
3:59
Good, because you got one of those just like you.
4:02
Yeah, that's, it's funny, it's funny.
4:04
So tell us a little bit about what security VIP is now,
4:08
not just a podcast, it's so much more.
4:11
Yeah, yeah, no, I mean, we started as the podcast
4:14
back in 2020, nothing but the truth is the podcast name.
4:17
And then, you know, since 2020,
4:19
we've evolved in what I call a research firm
4:21
in the security industry.
4:22
So we still have the podcast of course,
4:24
but we do product reviews now,
4:25
we do health companies, we do articles,
4:27
we do educational content around the security industry,
4:30
primarily physical security,
4:32
but we do have some cybersecurity content as well.
4:35
But, you know, since kind of taking it full time
4:38
and doing all this educational content
4:40
and helping end users make more informed decisions
4:43
about their security and safety posture,
4:45
you know, a lot of people are coming to me,
4:46
like, yeah, Taylor, we're just kind of,
4:48
kind of burned out, man, of the trade shows
4:52
Yeah, I wish I wasn't there.
4:53
You can only have so much swag.
4:56
Well, that's the exact reaction, you know,
4:58
it's fun, the first round.
5:01
Sick around your car, I already got that thumb drive.
5:03
I don't need that thumb drive again.
5:04
I mean, the word I don't know either.
5:07
I don't need a thousand thumb drives, right?
5:09
But from the end user side, you know,
5:12
obviously like they go to like some of these shows
5:14
and they're just kind of overwhelmed
5:15
with the amount of people there in number one.
5:17
And number two, they don't feel like their voice
5:19
is being heard on this kind of conversations.
5:22
And then you push, you can't hear anything
5:24
at these damn trade shows any house.
5:26
I mean, the voice was wanting to be heard.
5:28
They literally can't hear you.
5:30
Yeah, it's an assembly line.
5:31
It's chaotic, it's noisy, you know,
5:34
yada yada yada, the list goes on.
5:35
But on the manufacturer side,
5:37
which I know you know this as well.
5:39
So it's like, it's expensive, man,
5:40
to have a booth at some of these shows.
5:43
When you're paying the union fees and the shipping
5:45
and building your booth and the T&E.
5:47
And so for a startup manufacturer that maybe is bleeding edge
5:50
or has these cutting-edge technology,
5:52
you know, they can't afford a 10 by 10 booth
5:54
or a 20 by 20 booth.
5:55
You know, if I can't afford a table.
5:58
Yeah. And for three days, you know,
5:59
or two days show, like they're hoping and praying
6:02
that someone stops by, it says,
6:03
oh, I've got interest in you're being like,
6:05
you know, they are wise always in question.
6:08
Long story short, I took all that.
6:10
Obviously, we still do the research,
6:11
but we're just now putting that research element
6:14
from the digital footprint to more of a brick
6:16
and mortar footprint.
6:17
So we're on at the SVIP Security Experience Center.
6:20
And this is our attempt to really challenge
6:22
and kind of disrupt the whole trade show.
6:23
So is this a new physical toe?
6:25
Is this going to be like a physical space
6:27
as well as an online space?
6:29
Yeah, it's roughly 15, 20,000 square feet,
6:32
piece of real estate based here in Dallas for worse.
6:36
We're subject to launch Q4 this year
6:39
just outside of the airport.
6:41
But we got about 25 manufacturers.
6:42
Perfect spot to put it though.
6:46
The airport people will just fly in.
6:48
Yeah, they can go, they can go to their meetings.
6:50
So trade shows and they can, on the way out,
6:52
they can stop by and see what you got, which is good.
6:55
So for manufacturers, it's permanent piece of real estate
6:59
for them to have the product all year round
7:00
versus a trade show.
7:02
And it's also online too, isn't it?
7:05
We do a bunch of what an e-commerce, not e-commerce,
7:08
more podcast, of course, is still online.
7:11
I have a studio now.
7:12
I'm going to have a studio, finally, for the podcast.
7:16
I know, I'm excited about that.
7:17
But yeah, we'll still do the product testing.
7:20
You all respond outside of your house to kind of get out,
7:23
you know, get the cobwebs off, finally.
7:31
And I was, so going back to how I raised capital,
7:34
I think before we kicked this off,
7:35
I got, I bootstrapped the course,
7:36
but I saw an industry friend saw what we were doing
7:39
and they wanted to be involved and help me out.
7:41
And so I was able to rate a little bit of not dilutive capital
7:45
to on board two full-time hires.
7:47
I've got my VP business development
7:50
and my chief revenue officer now with me full-time.
7:52
And the best part about being a founder,
7:54
I don't have to give out any equity
7:55
to get them all forward.
7:57
So I'm going to take a quick break here
7:59
from our sponsors and get right back to the show.
8:01
Hey, have you heard about podcast on?
8:04
This is a global podcast charity event
8:06
where hosts dedicate one episode
8:08
to a nonprofit they care about and release it together
8:11
the same week, no fundraising, no fees,
8:14
just powerful storytelling for good.
8:16
Podcast on 2026 runs March 14th to March 20th.
8:20
Join thousands of podcasters worldwide
8:22
and use your voice for impact.
8:24
It's free, it's simple.
8:26
And it starts at p-o-d-c-a-s-t-o-n.org.
8:31
The marketing podcast network
8:33
is a proud partner of podcast on.
8:35
Which is rare, typically, you know,
8:36
you got to go the VC route or family and friends around
8:40
and give out, you know, equity and stuff,
8:41
but this industry friend just solved the values.
8:44
And you know what, I want to help you out, Taylor.
8:45
And here's a bucket of money that you can build out.
8:51
And you're able to bring Kate on.
8:53
Your wife, which is awesome.
8:56
And then maybe you'll have your mask on.
8:58
You know, probably not.
9:00
What the put them in, like, you know, hats and garbage
9:03
and all that good stuff, you know.
9:06
I mean, I want the center to be very educational.
9:08
So like, honestly, like, I want school districts
9:10
to do field trips at the experience center
9:11
to really learn about proactive technologies.
9:14
So that's our whole foundation is be educational.
9:22
You know, we're, we're an independent resource, right?
9:24
So we'll have like competing technologies next to competing
9:29
That really, really benefits the end user.
9:30
And I think the other thing that's cool inside these
9:32
is experience center is we're going to mock up vertical
9:35
So I'll have like a, a classroom environment, a hospital
9:38
environment, a retail store, a casino floor, and they'll have
9:41
products inside those environments to really emulate
9:43
what a real world environment looks like.
9:46
Oh, it's a play with the big boy Legos.
9:53
You don't have to come check it out, man.
9:54
Once it's open running.
9:56
I'm going to get your belt.
9:57
So I haven't been to Dallas.
9:58
I haven't been to Texas yet.
10:00
I don't know why I've never made out to Texas.
10:03
I've been out to Kentucky shockingly.
10:06
Never had to Texas.
10:07
So how do we get you to have to have you on the podcast, then?
10:10
Although I love the podcast.
10:13
So I asked this before, but I asked this again, because what's
10:17
the best thing to be honest with you now that you're full
10:22
You might agree with this.
10:23
I mean, I just like working for myself now.
10:26
You're on your own boss.
10:27
He sets your own task and schedules.
10:31
Yeah, I don't know.
10:32
Nothing against corporate America or like working for someone else.
10:35
I think everyone has their own path wherever they are on their
10:38
But for me personally, I just kind of got burned out of working
10:42
for someone else and submitting someone else on their terms.
10:47
And so now I'm in the position to support my family and do
10:51
something that I'm 100% passionate about.
10:53
And you know, that's, I think it's the best job about being
10:55
a founding house, you know, just doing waking up every single
10:59
day and pushing yourself and believing in something that you
11:02
think is going to be revolutionary for this industry.
11:05
I think it's great.
11:06
Now, we'll keep seeing up at night besides your 10 month old.
11:10
He's actually funny, but he's actually sleeping
11:12
So I'm actually like, like, you do have a pretty awake
11:17
So I'm not going to tell you where he is.
11:18
He's free now, your daughter, my daughter's two and a half.
11:23
It's a two and a half year old and 10 month old.
11:25
If you look at why I didn't push it, tell it right now, it's
11:29
I think I think anyone's as a founder, I mean, being early stage
11:33
and kind of the revenue generation, just revenue solves
11:36
everything, you know, as a founder, you want to give as much
11:38
revenue in the door because that will solve literally any
11:40
higher issue or, you know, foreign rate issues.
11:43
So I think that's what really keeps me up at night.
11:46
It's just how do we continue to capitalize on the revenue
11:48
streams that we have available and making sure we're hitting
11:51
objectives that we need to hit?
11:52
Because as much as it is to raise capital and raise funding,
11:57
it's, you know, obviously I still have an obligation to my
12:00
friend to pay him back as money, his return, but obviously
12:04
He looked at simple.
12:07
But not unlike, you know, interest terms or anything like that.
12:08
It's really, it's a really good deal.
12:12
Am I an issue to do that?
12:13
We're in most of this revenue, man.
12:17
Just trying to make sure that we can, you know, hit the goals
12:18
that we want to hit.
12:22
And what's the now?
12:23
What's the most important thing to be carried with you all the
12:26
Besides a good book of business.
12:28
It's just to stay true to who I am.
12:31
You know, I think authenticity and accountability and
12:34
transparency is what I've always been preaching to my
12:38
And so making sure I always stay true to that as well as, as
12:40
we scale as a team.
12:41
I think every single week, like, I don't want to be, I know I
12:45
said corporate America, but I don't ever want us to be
12:48
Once you guys that all speak up, you guys have direct access
12:52
I mean, if you have an idea, let's, let's talk about it.
12:55
And then you're not the boss.
12:58
Because I get to make it hit by a bus tomorrow.
13:00
I want SVIP to still run.
13:02
Hopefully the camera will stop you from getting hit by a bus.
13:06
I want to, I want to be, I want to create that kind of
13:09
I like, look, like, you know, everyone has value in this
13:16
So though I got you on again.
13:17
And everyone go check out SVIP.News.
13:19
And also Taylor is very active on the, the LinkedIn.
13:26
That's like his, that's his place to hang out.
13:28
And with the only app I, I'm on like daily.
13:32
Hey, you pick your, pick your, pick your vertical.
13:34
That's a replacement base.
13:38
Thanks so much for being on.
13:39
And we'll see everyone next week.
13:41
That was a great show.
