Multiple governments have tinkered and fiddled, they've set prices, reset prices, but each and every auction has basically been a failure. Just quickly, if you don't follow this stuff, there are four auctions a year,

1:00you buy credits if you're a polluter to offset your environmental damage. Troublers, no one turns up, there are no bits, and the really bad thing about that is there is no revenue because of this actually worked, there could be two billion dollars worth for the government every year. I can't remember how many times I've asked governments about this from Robinson to Watts, they all say the same thing, all defend it, and yet the irrefutable proof walls and is, they simply don't work. Credits can be bought and sold in a variety of other ways, you can plant trees, you can trade with other people and their credits, and when you're literally dealing with an idea that one is invented out of thin air, until you've got no faith in any way, why on earth would you turn up and pay the government money? Obviously the answer is you wouldn't, and you didn't. And you don't. Hence the government got to the inevitable, but where someone other than me asked, do you reckon this thing is worth sticking with? Now under labour, I was not surprised that it didn't kill them because that's what ideology does to you, it blinds you to logic and common sense, but the current lot, you would have hoped you better. Well as the papers show, they almost did, and yet couldn't quite get there.

You remember when China used to grow 10% a year or they said they did and everyone eventually came to the conclusion that they basically made it up and then they sort of changed their ways and allegedly it's more straight up and down now, same applies to India, which I hadn't realised until this morning. So they came out this week somewhere between 7 and 8 counter-mibwater. It was 7 points something. Major controversy around whether India are now making these numbers up. So watch the space. 15 past six. I'm sure a part of Andrew Callerhue good morning. Very good morning Mike. Terms of trade if I'm optimistic and take the oil out, we're doing okay. Is that fair? We are. We are. So it's tax-punish on the Estabre released international trade figures. So at the very high level you saw a bit of well, you saw a lift in total exports in the June quarter, 28.5 billion to 32.5 billion imports lifted as well. So not wildly to some of the numbers at the end. As part of those numbers, we also look at what is called the terms of trade index. Now I'm going to admit here that not really a household topic.

6:20This is unlikely to be the sort of first thing that's going to be talked about around the work water cooler, but it's pretty important nonetheless to sort of try and explain simply the terms of trade measures how much we can buy from the rest of the world with what we sell to the rest of the world. So it's really looking at the relationship of export prices to import prices. So we basically we've got to we've got to kind of work out with can we afford to buy the stuff we need from overseas through the through the returns we get from what we sell overseas. And the reason I wanted to pick up on this is because it looked pretty bad which kind of flies in the face of this great export story that we've been selling doesn't it. So terms of trade fell 9%, which is a hefty fall, but it's one of these occasions when you have to look at the detail, you just put the outcome into the correct perspective. So it looks like we've got significantly less purchasing parents naturally, but what we saw as if you could probably most people could probably figure this out the higher all prices have pushed the import prices higher. So you saw a 14% increase in

7:22import prices actually a fallen volume, but because you know the price went up we had that increase there, but at the same time our export prices rose 3.5% and we had a 6.4% lift in export volumes. So without the fuel price issue the other side of the ledger the export numbers I think that look pretty solid. So and then in fact if you actually sort of drill it all down just still it all down the implication of the export numbers are sort of positive for the Q2 GDP. Look the where other flow and effects from the high all prices things like plastics went up as well, but Mike sort of I'll run the risk of being sort of repetitive on this, but we do have this non-trivial risk of down the longevity of the middle east conflict and its impact on fuel prices and supply. You know in other words the longer it drags on the more it increases the risk of second round but in direct effects. The one thing that I'm kind of surprised that Mike's looks slightly different topic, but if you've seen the reports of the last few days about this seems to be quite a lot of oil

8:22coming through the strait. That's what I want to say yesterday, listen to the party program man, I said on Monday Chris Wright was out there 17 million barrels through Monday, normally pre-war, it was 20. Yeah but the issue that I want to pick up on is that it doesn't seem to have had any impact on the oil price. No. And this is the thing that I'm intrigued by this at the moment, so I've been on chat GPT or morning trying to figure out what the what these price-tlawed telling you, what's he seeing? What's he telling? Well it's basically telling you that at the end result was there is still upside risk to the oil price, but you would have thought with all the oil coming out it would start to have a press press anyway. Well I've got you know so that when you mentioned the Q2 GDP, do you reckon they could surprise the upside, everyone's got it negative, do you reckon it could surprise the upside? There's always the potential for that, there is always, I mean there are you know our economic boffin friends out there, you know the real economists, not the backyard ones like me, you know that crunch all the numbers, they still seem to be coming up with sort of zero or slightly negative, so I think we should give them the benefit of doubt, but I think, yes what you're saying is I think that

9:24is a risk that they could surprise the upside. Now the fidelity life thing, does that I'm assuming takes a major player out of the market and therefore someone's going to want to question or two aren't they? Yeah absolutely so in the life insurance world in New Zealand, the refer, but few big players really got AIA, child, partner's life, fidelity life, yesterday it was reported that partner's life has acquired fidelity, so it's through the big players coming together, it's a big deal, nice significant deal, price quoted at $630 million, so partner's life is owned by Daitchilife Japanese company, fidelity was owned by, it was owned by the New Zealand Superfund and I told you had to state the founders had to state, yeah this deal is subject to the full gamut, the full range of regulatory approvals, OIO reserve bank comments commission, so if it does eventually go through, it does sort of remove a significant player in the life insurance market, so we'll have to wait and see what comments commission thinks about it. Yeah nice little rally going on as you said, the Fed governor sort of settled the markets down and the market, they've got back to doing what they do best which is pumping up the share market, the Dow Jones is up 626.1.18%, 53,600 and 88, the S&P 500 88.1.15, 77,5 for the market there and the NASDAQ is up 1.57% 412 points 26,631, puts you 100 up 0.7% overnight, what do we got? 10,831, the NICA fell small 0.17, 64214, the Shanghai composite barely changed 3942, the Aussies yesterday gained 0.46% 9,020, the close there, the NZX 50 fell 0.61% 84 points 13,846, 1 key, we dollar a little bit strong this morning against the US 0.5884,

It's a very good question So then what does this person do although they'll get to New York except they'll be going today But they won't be going direct which was the deal they bought They'll be going via San Francisco So when they get to San Francisco They then wait three hours at least to get on the domestic flight from San Francisco to New York So the three-day holiday will turn into a one-day holiday because it will take two extra days to actually get to New York
