Fun Facts About the Alphabet

Fun Facts Daily

About this episode

The modern English alphabet is the result of thousands of years of linguistic evolution, tracing its earliest roots back to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Proto-Sinaitic script. Through adaptations by the Phoenicians, Greeks, Etruscans, and Romans, basic symbols developed into standardized phonetic letters. Over time, writing practices continually reshaped the alphabet, leading to innovations such as the dot over lowercase "i" and "j" known as a tittle, to improve manuscript legibility, as well as the formal addition of "j" as the 26th letter in the 16th and 17th centuries. Historical quirks also saw the ampersand briefly included as a 27th letter in 19th-century schoolrooms, while significant phonetic events like the Great Vowel Shift created lasting disconnects between English spelling and modern pronunciation. Beyond standard English, alphabets across world languages showcase remarkable diversity in scale and composition. Writing systems range from Rotokas in Papua New Guinea, which features one of the world's shortest alphabets with only 12 letters, to the Khmer script in Cambodia, which contains 74 characters. The full spectrum of letters also plays a practical role in typography, communication testing, and keyboard design through pangrams, sentences like "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" that incorporate every letter of the alphabet. Finally, applying standardized alphanumeric principles like the ISO 8601 date format offers a reliable method for organizing and archiving digital files systematically. Listen Ad-Free on Patreon. For just $3 per month, you can get ad-free versions of Fun Facts Daily, Who ARTed and Art Smart.
