Today is Wednesday, March 18th, and Pillsie, always a good match-up when the Ottawa Senators
take on the Washington Capitals.
Yeah, these two teams play each other well, and even last season, Ross, I was hoping
that that would be the match-up in the playoffs because I like the way the Ottawa Senators
were up against them.
This year, there was one outlier, but typically, all these games are within one goal.
Five of the last six games decided by just one goal, that outlier, of course, a 7-1 win.
That's the last time the Senators played in Washington.
We'll see if there's a little magic left for Ottawa to produce a victory.
The Senators coming off a great weekend where they earn back-to-back wins over the Anaheim
Ducks and the San Jose Sharks.
They're going back-to-back, back-to-backs, as they'll take on the Islanders at home tomorrow.
Big news coming out this morning.
Linus Allmark will start, were you a little surprised by that?
Yeah, it definitely was, especially after Linus Allmark started.
Both games in the back-to-back, I really thought it'd be like, okay, let's give James
Rhymer an opportunity here and then have Linus start.
The more important game up against the New York Islanders tomorrow, I don't want to get
into my whole song and dance, Ross, but typically, I'm not a fan of goalies going back-to-back.
I'm definitely not a fan of goalies going back-to-back and back-to-back-to-backs.
We're going to have to keep a counter on how many times we say back-to-back in this episode.
I think we're at like 25 already here.
But look, James Rhymer coming off a shut-out.
I think there's no reason why he shouldn't have started this game.
Well, I mean, it'll be tomorrow then, right?
You got to think he gets tomorrow.
Do we know that?
I don't know.
Well, if you're the head coach, you just want to win games.
And Linus Allmark right now is giving you a chance to win every single night.
He's 11, 1, and 4 in his last 15 appearances.
That's bad news.
16.
This is not a, do not start Linus Allmark.
This is a, let's make sure we're properly managing him down the stretch,
because I want Allmark to play a lot of these games,
because he's been looking good lately.
This is a Allmark appreciation rant that I'm doing here.
And if James Rhymer was just terrible, and you couldn't trust him at all,
that's different story.
But again, he's coming off a shut-out.
He's been decent this year, and he has a winning record.
So I think these are the types of scenarios where you play him.
Although it is kind of funny, though, Allmark does have an 884 save percentage
in his last six games, and that includes a shut-out victory where he was, of course, perfect.
So it's not like he's a world-beater out there right now,
but he is making key saves at key times for the most part.
Obviously, that goal against Montreal, the game winner, you'd want back.
But all in all, it has been a very solid stretch for Allmark,
and he will get the start in goal tonight.
He will get more into the lineups in the next segment,
but Allmark in his career against Washington is 752
with a 2.78 goals against average and a 900 save percentage.
He's also got two penalty minutes.
You might remember him skating all the way down the ice.
Wasn't that last season?
No, that was early this season in the 7-1 win,
where we had just seen a goalie fight, I believe, the other day,
and we're like, is Allmark going to get in the mix?
He was ready to, but the officials got in the way.
I didn't let him finish the job.
I think that's good.
That's it.
I don't know if I like Linus Allmark's chances getting in a goalie fight.
No, but you like him getting in the mix and being a part of the team?
I love the idea.
I love the passion.
And it's also another homecoming for Lars Ellor.
He was talking yesterday.
It's exciting for him.
I think his family stayed back.
He's got young kids in school.
So they stayed in the Washington area.
He'll get a chance to go and see them yesterday
and then get ready for the game tonight,
where it's going to be, I think, a battle of attrition.
Because I think if you're looking at Washington,
that's a team that had played more games,
still has than anybody else.
And they've kind of fallen out of it.
They're a bit of a dark horse here
because we know they have the talent.
They do have a plus 19 goal differential.
They're five, four, and one in their last 10 games.
They have the excitement of adding a young player
will make his NHL debut tonight in Cole Hudson.
But they don't have the luxury of the game's remaining.
Ottawa was 66 games played.
Washington's played two more.
This is the type of game where you can almost
put Washington to bed if you beat them in regulation tonight
because they're on that precipice
where we've got the doomsday clock
at five regulation losses remaining for Ottawa.
For Washington, it's probably down to two.
Yeah, I have the Washington capitals in bed
as far as the playoff race goes Ross.
Maybe if you beat them, then you fully tuck them in.
Yeah, they're in bed,
but they've got the reading light on still.
Yeah, sure.
Yeah, they're not fully asleep yet.
You can't cannot a team that has the talent
that we know Washington does.
If you look at it, Ottawa and Washington
among the teams that are wildcard right now,
they're tied with the most regulation wins.
They each have 28.
Now, Ottawa's one regulation win that keeps them tied
came in that incredible game on January 1st
in Ottawa between these two teams
where Washington tied the game with four minutes left.
And Ottawa said, no, no, work it.
Amazing play by Thomas Shabbat,
spin a ram into the zone, finds Fabian Zetterland back door.
He made no mistake and they win the game
with that goal with two minutes remaining.
That was a huge win for Ottawa coming after the,
let's just say the start after the Chris was break
did not go well.
The loss, the infamous loss in Toronto
and then losing to Columbus when they traveled
in the day of the game.
So you came into that game just absolutely needing a win
and Ottawa did get that one.
So can they replicate that?
They'll need to because these are enormous points.
They had a town scoreboard not helping us out again last night.
It was terrible.
I mean, other than at least Montreal winning
and overtime, overtime merchants,
that's what they do and stopping Boston
from getting that extra point, it was all bad.
It was horrific.
Everywhere you look, the Islanders getting two points
over the Toronto Maple Leafs, you look elsewhere.
Who else got two points?
Columbus, five, one win over the Carolina Hurricanes,
even the late night game.
The lightning had been floundering a touch
not that they were gonna be the team to drop out
but they get a six to win over the Kraken,
the Sabre shut out, the Golden Knights, too, nothing like.
Anywhere you look, it's just classic
when an East team plays a West team.
Except funny enough, the Vancouver Connect's dead last
the National Hockey League did get a win over the Florida Panthers,
but we had talked yesterday about cheering for Florida
because we don't want them to bottom out all the way
and we know they've got injuries
and that they're gonna reload for next year.
You don't want them adding a top five pick
for their troubles this season.
So just an absolute garbage day on the out of town scoreboard,
the only thing that you can look at now if you're Ottawa
and you gotta win them, but games in hand.
You got two games in hand against both Detroit and Boston
right now, you're five points back in both of them
and you're about to go on an absolute tear here
in terms of games played.
They just had two days off, but then it's back-to-back,
add it to the tally.
You got Toronto Saturday and then a back-to-back
next Monday Tuesday, you're playing the New York Rangers
and then the Detroit Red Wings, both of those games
are on the road.
So we're coming fast and furious here, Pilsy.
That's five games in the next seven days
for the Ottawa Senators.
Hey, I'm excited.
It seems like it's been forever
since the Ottawa Senators haven't played.
We just had to take two days off.
One was a travel day Monday for both of us.
Yesterday was my birthday.
It seems like forever.
So I'm ready to get back in the mix.
I was saying though in the group chat yesterday
that I was happy they got that extra day.
I think everybody needed it, including the players.
You saw how many guys got the day off practice for Ottawa.
Yeah, no, we needed that as well.
So I was actually happy to.
But we're all the way back
and we're excited to break down this game,
get into some numbers, some lineup notes
and keys to victory next year listening
to locked on Senators, your team, every day.

All right, Pillsy, it is a Wednesday sports net game
which means the game starts tonight at 730 Eastern
and we will have our alternate feed
on the Locked On Senators YouTube channel.
So you can join Jack and friends for tonight's game.
It's a big one for the Ottawa Senators
and they are going into it with the exact same lineup
that we saw in both games this weekend.
What does that mean?
Well, it means that Tim Stutzla is centering the top line
between Drake Batherson and Claude Geroux.
The second line will feature Dylan Cousins
between Brady Kachock and Ridley Gregg.
The oh, so enammering, third line of Shane Pinto
between Nick Cousins and Michael O'Matio
and the fourth line of Lars Eller
with Warren Fogel and Fabian Zetterlin.
On the back end, Thomas Shabbat with Artim Zube,
Tyler Cleven with Jordan Spence and Danny Gilmer,
Dennis Gilbert with Nicholas Matten Palo,
Linus Almark starts in goal.
We had the injury updates yesterday,
Jake Sanderson expected to skate by the end of the week
and Nick Jensen will miss the rest of the regular season
with a torn Maniscus Pilsie,
your Locked On player to watch.
My Locked On player to watch
is going to be our number one star from last weekend Ross.
I'm keeping my eyes peeled on number 22, Michael O'Matio.
For a guy that is typically towded
mostly for his defensive play,
he's on a sneaky heater right now Ross
in his last seven games.
How about seven points for Michael O'Matio,
three goals, four assists.
He's been killing penalties more.
He's got 12 shots in that span,
shooting at a 25% clip right now.
Seven blocks, eight hits, three takeaways.
I'm liking what I'm seeing from Michael O'Matio in that third line.
So I'm going to be locked on to him
and see if they can shut down Alex O'Betchkin
and contribute offensively.
Yeah, and I think if that third line can continue
contributing the way they have on the scoreboard,
it's going to be a great sign for Ottawa.
Just like we saw the fourth line come through,
Warren Fogel and Fabian Zetterlin both scoring in that game
against the San Jose Sharks.
My locked on player is going to be Tim Stutzl.
I could go a different way with this,
but I'm going with Timmy Superstar.
No points last weekend,
even though many, myself included,
believe that he deserved one in the Anaheim game.
This guy brings it each and every night.
I'm really intrigued, though,
that I guess, you know what, I'm not.
I understand why.
The third and fourth lines, we're rolling against the Sharks,
but Tim Stutzl only played 16-34 in that game.
And for his right-winger, Collot Giroux,
that was the least amount of ice times Giroux
played all season and I'd argue,
potentially the least he's played as a senator.
He only played 10 minutes in that game.
So, look, does that keep guys fresh?
Or is it just a matter of, let's go with the hot hand?
We'll see tonight, though,
but I think Timmy should have some extra jump
in this game against the Washington capitals
in his career against the capitals.
Tim Stutzl only has one goal in 13 games.
Whoa, interesting note there.
He does have 10 assists and 11 points.
He's a minus four, 31 shots on goal,
averaging just under three per game
and he's averaging almost 20 minutes a game.
So, I'd expect him to be right back up
in that 20-minute range.
I also want to give some love to Dylan Cousins
because I don't think we spent enough time talking it.
How elite that shot was in the game against the San Jose Sharks.
It was only shot of the game.
And again, his ice time was down,
a touch 16-19, three hits in the game as well.
I've been really appreciating Dylan Cousins
who got to the 50-point plateau
for the first time in three seasons
by getting that goal in the third period
as 24th goal of the year.
I don't think there's enough runway yet, Pilsie,
for him to hit his career high.
He had 31, three seasons ago.
But if he could sneak up to 30 in the last game of the season,
wouldn't that be incredible for Dylan Cousins?
Yeah, I'd like Cousins to get 30.
I think that's a goal that he can do
and the way that he's been scoring consistently
over the last, I don't know, 10 games.
I don't think it's that crazy, Ross.
No, and we're going to see it tonight, too,
because Washington, and we'll look at their lines
at just a moment, they're built, I would say,
on the wing more than at center.
When you look at Ovech, can you look at Tom Wilson and the like?
I think that the center depth for Ottawa
should be shining light
if they are going to have success in tonight's game.
Let's take a look at how the Washington capitals
are expected to line up.
Their number one center is Dylan Strowham.
He's between Alex Ovechkin and Anthony Bovillier.
Their second line is Hendrix Lapierre.
Good Gatnau Boy in between Alexei Protas and Tom Wilson.
That's a big boy line on the wings.
Third line, Pierre-Luc Dubois
between Connor McMichael and Ryan Leonard.
And the fourth line is Justin Sourdief
with Brandon Duhame and Ethan Frank.
On defense, Jacob Chikren with Trevor Van Reamsdijk.
Cole Hudson, his NHL debut.
He'll be paired with Matt Roy.
And the third pair is Martin Faravari
with Rasmus Sandin.
Confirmation is in Logan Thompson.
We'll start in goal.
He was in net for that game on January 1st
where Ottawa got the victory.
His numbers are great.
A 912 save percentage this season,
a 2.42 goals against average.
How funny is this tone?
It speaks to the decline in scoring
for Washington year over year.
Last year, his numbers were worse.
He had a worse save percentage,
worse goals against average,
the exact same amount of shutouts.
This year, he's got a 2.2 19 and five record.
Last year, he was 31, 6 and 6
in just about the same amount of games play.
So he's doing his part,
but Ottawa's got to get to him early on in this game.
Don't forget, he's a southpaw,
catches with the other hand.
So that kind of changes the way you're coming down,
looking for spots on him,
but that to me is my lookout player.
Logan Thompson to see what kind of goal-tending performance
we're going to get from him
because his career against the Ottawa Senators,
he's only faced them seven times and get this.
Five, one in one record with a 923 save percentage
and a 2.55 goals again.
So he's done really well in his career.
Obviously, some of that with Vegas
and we know that Vegas had the Senators number
over the course of until this year.
But I'm going to be looking out for Logan Thompson.
Yeah, that's a good one.
Good goalie there.
I can be looking out for number six, Jacob Chicken.
It pains me to see how well he's doing away from Ottawa.
He is tied for points on this team
in the lead with Alex Ovescan with 51 points.
66 games, 23 goals, 28 assists.
He's a plus 14 scoring six of those 23 on the power play.
Seven of those 23 are game winners
and he actually leads the Washington capitals in shots
with 201 shots like this team.
Obviously OV is the face of this franchise
but kind of runs through Jacob Chicken,
especially with how they traded John Carlson away.
That decore belongs to Jacob Chicken
and he's a big part of their offense.
But he's been for how he's been producing.
He's been slumping a little bit
the last couple of games in his last seven games.
Just one goal to assist three points.
But here's the crazy stat.
He's a minus 11 in his last seven games
and he's a plus 14 on the season.
So I don't know if maybe trading wage on Carlson
has put that kind of pressure on him
and I know Carlson was injured the last little while
but I'm hoping that he continues to slump here
up against the Ottawa Senators.
He's obviously such a talented player offensively.
You cannot give him time or space
but as a left shot defense from Pilsie,
he's very likely going to see a lot of Michael Amadio
on the breakouts.
So I think if you're the Senators,
you're looking to disrupt him before he can create
because that's what he wants to do.
He's obviously got that bomb from the point
but when he's trying to break the puck out
and he's going to be the primary puck carrier
on that pair, Trevor Van Riemstein
a much more cerebral defensive defenseman,
you're going to have to be aware.
And that whole left side,
I know Faravari a little bit less so
but Carl Hudson in his first NHL game,
if he's anything like his brother,
the moment's not going to feel too big for him
and he's going to be a guy who's going to thrive
the more time he gets to have the puck and feel it
and be like, hey, this is just another hockey game.
It's not like I'm going out there against an amazing,
amazing team in terms of level up from college to the NHL.
He's obviously watching his brother have the success
that he's had and he's going to say,
I want a piece of that as well.
So if you're the senators, be aware of that left side,
being the break outside, being the side that's going to go back
and get pox and try to create in the offensive zone.
They're very yin yang because Matt Roy again,
his partner, Carl Hudson tonight,
a veteran right shot defenseman who allegedly the sense
we're interested in going into free agency in 2024.
We'll see how things shake out there on the back end.
One more note up front,
like it's kind of interesting to me that Hendrix Lapieres
getting that role here in between Protas and Wilson,
bumping down Pierre-Luc Dubois to the third line.
Dubois has been injured for much of the season.
He came back at the start of February
and in the first three games
and that was spread out before and after the Olympics.
He played one game before the Olympics
and then in the two games after,
he had five points in three games.
It was plus five, things were looking good.
But since then, it's been no bueno.
He's dashed four, his next game against Montreal
and he only has one goal and one assist.
He's minus nine in his last seven games.
So I think if you're Ottawa,
you're not gonna want him to get hot.
And I feel like that's kind of common denominator
through this team is we see they have so much talent
but they haven't necessarily all been clicking
at all cylinders.
So I think if you're Ottawa,
get out to a lead kind of try to turn that crowd against you
and go from there.
But you're looking at two really good teams going head to head
tonight, both teams scoring over three goals per game.
The caps are at 3.1, Ottawa at 3.36.
The caps, as I mentioned, Logan Thompson, great goalie.
They're under three goals against per game.
They're at 2.9, whereas Ottawa is up at 3.11.
So funny enough, Ottawa gives up almost identical goals
against as the capital score.
So I don't know if we can get a decimal there,
but if the caps might be scoring 3.1 goals tonight.
Oh, and you look at it, the caps give up four more shots
per game than Ottawa does.
Both teams are identical in shots for per game.
Senators penalty kill, obviously still climbing
after a tough, tough, tough start to the season.
But they've been a lot better of late,
and the Senators' power play is clicking at 23.4%.
Pilsy, the caps have one of the worst power plays in the lead.
16.3, do you think after 20 years,
people finally figured out they're just trying
to give Obi-Wan timers?
Well, I don't want to give it away too much,
because that's going to be a part of my keys
to victory on the other side here.
So let's get to it.

All right, Phil, see the Ottawa Senators coming in tonight.
Five points out of that final playoff spot.
Two games in hand over both the teams.
They're five points behind.
That is the Boston Bruins and the Detroit Red Wings.
There's six games in the National Hockey League tonight.
And neither of those two teams are playing.
The only ones that are adjacent to the Senators
would be the Pittsburgh Penguins who are in Carolina.
We're hoping that if Columbus keeps surging
that Pittsburgh or the New York Islanders
fall out of that Metropolitan Division top three.
And that's really it on the out of town scoreboard.
I guess, Phil, at all, if you had an outside look,
but there are three points back of Ottawa.
And I'm counting them out.
I'll go ahead and say that.
There in Anaheim, though, later on.
So really, it's a take care of business night
for the Ottawa Senators.
How can they do it?
What are your keys to victory?
My keys to victory are going to be what you talked about.
You would think that the Washington capitals
would be an elite power play team.
You got the greatest goal score ever in Alex O'Betskin.
You got Jacob Chikren, who I mentioned,
lights it up on the power play, scores goals.
We know that he's got a bomb of a shot.
But the capitals are 29th in the league
in power play percentage, sitting at 16.3.
And not only that, Ross, but no longer
is the story of the Ottawa Senators,
their brutal penalty kill.
And that is so refreshing.
Our guys over at the SENS 10-year-old podcast,
they put this together.
When the PK was under Nolan Baumgardner,
October to January, there were 31st in the league.
Then they made that switch to Mike Yeo, January 24th.
And they're 11th in the league with an 82.5% penalty kill.
And so what changed?
Well, they switched their coach, who was in charge of it.
And maybe they tuned into our episodes in the off season,
Ross, but they started playing Michael Amadio
more on the penalty kill.
That was one of my main things I wanted to see.
How do you have a guy that's one of the best defensive players
in the league?
And you're like, hmm, let's not bother putting him
on the penalty kill, no need for that.
It was just crazy to me that they weren't doing that.
So I'm glad that they've updated that.
But since that time, January 24th to now,
the Ottawa Senators are 32 for 39 on the penalty kill.
And they scored two short-handed goals in that period as well.
So the fact that they were able to drastically turn around
their penalty kill and that the goal-tending hasn't been
absolutely abysmal lately is a big part of why
this team has had more success.
So key to victory for me, Ross, is continue
to be a strong team on the penalty kill.
Because if you can fully understand
that Alex Ovestkin is going to be in his spot
at a big part of their power play
is getting it to him feeding him that one timer,
and then also not allowing him to act as a decoy
to open up Jacob Chikren.
Basically, what I'm saying is you just have to make sure
one timers don't get achieved from Ovestkin and Jacob Chikren.
And I think you can have success here.
Yeah, they do have those big bodies in protest and Tom Wilson
that you're going to have to get some heavy-duty machinery
to move in front of them.
If they beat you, though, so be it.
You just can't have OVScore from his spot
and you can't have them fool you into leaving Chikren open,
in my opinion.
Well, it was Ottawa's power play that has controlled
this season series and the reason why Ottawa
is two and O against the capitals.
You look at that seven-one game Ottawa
scored three power play goals in that one.
But what I'm looking at is when the caps have the power play,
try to get some fast breaks the other way.
The capitals are tied for second in the league
for the most short-handed goals allowed.
They've allowed nine shorties this season.
Only the Colorado Avalanche have allowed more.
They've got 12 short-handed goals against the capitals
are also sixth last.
So 26th or 27th in the national hockey league
in power play goals four.
So let's win the special teams battle tonight
if you're the Ottawa Senators.
And if you're wondering where Ottawa ranks
in power play goals scored, the Senators are fourth.
Only behind the Oilers, Stars, and Wild
in terms of total number of power play goals scored.
So that's where Dylan Cousins could be a big part of tonight's game.
That's where Brady Kitchock could be a big part
of tonight's game.
We love them at five on five playing with Ridley Greg,
but I think that PP won tonight.
I thought they were so bad against the Anaheim Ducks in particular.
Yeah, obviously we're able to smooth it out enough
against San Jose to score a big goal there for them.
But overall, I just, I hated what I saw from the break in.
They go two for three actually against San Jose.
Does that Erlin goal and the first goal,
the game, the Batherson goal,
where it went off of Mario Ferrero sticking in
was a power play goal.
But let's just get a shooter's mentality tonight.
Let's not look for the pretty play.
Let's not have to go tick tock toe
and have everybody get a touch and dust it off before shooting.
Just get pox on net, crash the net,
keep it simple, stupid, and try to get power play goals that way.
At five on five, the Ottawa Senators are a better team
than the Washington Capitals.
They're a better team, the most teams
in the National Hockey League this year.
If you look at shot attempts, percentage at five on five,
the Senators are third best in the league.
Well, the Washington Capitals are right in the middle of the pack.
You look at expected goals percentage.
At five on five, the Ottawa Senators are third in the league.
The Washington Capitals are 13th in the league.
This should be a situation where the Ottawa Senators
are able to get a victory because they want it more.
They're closer to a playoff spot, they can smell it.
And because they are at five on five, better team,
they got a better power play
and the penalty kill has been much better played.
The only one where it's heavy in the Washington Capitals
direction is their team save percentage.
At five on five, the Washington Capitals
have the fifth best team save percentage in the National Hockey League.
And if you go in all situations,
it actually drops a little bit.
So the penalty kill save percentage
in particular for Washington is not as high.
They are ninth in the National Hockey League
in overall team save percentage.
The Ottawa Senators are still dead last.
They are climbing a little bit,
but they're still behind the Florida Panthers
Vancouver Conoxon Edmonton Oilers Vegas Golden Knights.
Those are the teams just above them.
Ottawa dead last in team save percentage,
but Pillsy, when you give up so little
in terms of shot attempts per game,
your save percentage sometimes will get affected.
This is the last stat I'll bring up.
This is at all strengths.
The Ottawa Senators have given up the fewest shots
against this season.
Now again, they've played less games
than a couple of teams just in front of them
in Carolina and Vegas.
But Ottawa's given up 1,600 and two shots this season.
The team that's second behind them,
so third best in the NHL,
has given up 73 more shots than the Ottawa Senators.
That's the third best team in the National Hockey League.
Just for fun, let's see how much the difference is
between the best and the worst.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have given up 2,225 shots.
That's not a typo.
The Leafs have given up 600 more shots this season
than the Ottawa Senators.
That's crazy, holy.
That's wild.
Wow, so Ottawa's just got to keep doing what they've been doing.
I mean, this teams 14, 4 and 4 in their last 22 games.
They're 11, 2 and 2 in their last 15 games.
Just keep it rolling, keep it victory.
Keep it rolling, don't look ahead.
Do what Travis Green's been preaching.
Time and time again this year, don't look ahead.
Look at the task at hand.
And I think Ottawa's got a good chance.
Maybe a minus 135 chance at Fandall to win tonight's game.
Pills, any final thoughts on today's show?
No, I'm ready for Sen's hockey, go Sen's go.
Well, I'm ready for the live stream with Jack Richardson

It's a battle between the two capitals, senators,
representing Canada and the United States
being represented by Washington D. Steve.
For Brandon Piller, I'm Ross Levittan.
