14 every day.
Well, it was the first night for a lot of guys around the league playing for their new
teams after the trade deadline yesterday and with that deadline behind us now it's the
official sprint to the playoffs.
We are on 11 games on the docket tonight so we have a lot to get to but first thanks for
joining us here on the locked on NHL game night podcast part of the locked on podcast network
the number one sports podcast network.
I'm TJ Shalot play by play broadcaster here in the Charlotte area and I'm Eddie Garcia
out in Los Angeles and the host of locked on LA Kings and with our local experts tonight
we're going to make our way through this packed schedule and make sure that you don't miss
a thing.
So let's start things off.
Jack Hughes in the New Jersey Devils look since the Olympics the former number one overall
pick he's enjoying a massive surge in popularity and it seems like his game is following suit.
Hughes registers four points in this one including the hat trick as the devils double
up the rangers six three to win their fourth straight.
For more on the losing side here's hosts of locked on rangers john chick who has more.
The raiders have now played five games since the Olympic break and this is the first one
in which they will not get a point they are two one and two since the Olympic break and
where the positive things for me is that the effort level seems quite a bit higher it
just feels like this teams playing with a little bit more fight a little bit more energy
a little bit more resilience but then you're kind of just reminded in a game like this
against the devils that there is not that could have a team and you know obviously that's
been the case for the majority of the season when you sell some pieces at the deadline
and of course you know you're doing what you have to do to hopefully rebuild but in the
meantime you know as with any rebuilding team or retooling or whatever the rangers want
to call it it has to get worse before it gets better and it's just tough seeing losses
like this because they were they were in it I mean they were battling the entire way
they played hard for 60 minutes which has been an issue for this team in the past but it's
just not good enough and frankly like they're just not good enough but we'll bring it down
the next episode a lot down to your rangers do not miss it.
Yeah and he's got a good point there I mean it was a three three game going into the
third. Will Borgon Vladisov Gavrakov and Will Cooley all scoring for the rangers and then
the jersey devils just kind of turned it on and I got to ask you this question here Eddie.
I mean what we're seeing now from Jersey and what we're seeing from Jack Hughes look he
was always looked at as you know being a number one overall pick but a guy that had potential
and was he ever going to get there do you think that with everything happening with the
Olympics and the surge that's taken off is he finally taking that next step to be that
marquee just big headline guy in the NHL.
Yeah I think he is and you know when you look back on the Olympics and some of the obvious
themes that jump out at you as far as younger players may be taking that Olympic experience
and translating into bigger and better things at the NHL level.
McLean Celebrini obviously jumps off you know right away.
Yarslav Yoroslavkovsky who had a good night tonight too we'll talk about later he jumps
off the page as well but I think you can include Jack Hughes in that as well certainly he's
never had that kind of a moment on that kind of a stage and you know if you watch this
game he certainly played with a lot of attitude was having a good time put his full talents
on display had a gorgeous breakaway goal you know caps it off with the empty netter and just
made everything look so easy and chance of USA USA in the crowd there in New Jersey as well
I don't think there's any question his profile has certainly jumped up and I think he can
take that and use that and play with even more swagger not that he had a problem ever having
that but I absolutely think that this experience from the Olympics can only help it's just
a matter of staying healthy and being available but the talent and the attitude and the things
he can do are special.
Yeah I also think he's getting some you know up to play from his line mates especially
Jesper Brad who had three points in this game a goal and two assists it seems like the
chemistry there is really starting to click because the one thing I've noticed with Jack
Hughes is when his teammates don't play well it's a hundred times harder for him to play
well because it's just he plays the game so fast so if his line mates are half a step behind
the entire game you know there's just no chemistry there's no cohesion and Jesper Brad's been
playing really well since coming back from the Olympic break as Jersey wins this one six
to three they spoil the return of Jonathan quick playing in his first game in over a month
he was good on 24 of 29 marks from not too busy he stopped 17 of 20 as the devils roll
on but let's keep moving forward as Buffalo home against the predators and talk about two
teams going in opposite directions national coming in having lost five of their last seven
and while Buffalo we know what's going on with them since they fired their GM back in
December they've been the hottest team in the NHL and though it was kind of close the
Sabre survived this one three two they win their sixth straight game taged Thompson his 34th
goal of the year Jason Zucker and Josh Donne also getting on the board for the Sabres national
getting goals from leharu and wood Alex line pretty solid and looking here in the first
star for whatever that's worth turning away 23 of 25 in the win while Saros was good on 21 of
24 and right now Buffalo and absolute wagon they are picking up wins left and right yeah they didn't
start great in this one they only had two shots on goal in the first period but certainly came
alive in the second they scored two goals less than two minutes apart they kind of took control
from there and Josh Donne what a great pickup he has been I know when they made that trade for
J.J. Paturka from Utah I don't know if you would consider Donne a throw in I think that's a little
strong but you know everybody was talking about Kessler ring that they picked up more than they
talked about Josh Donne so Donne gets the game winner in this one he's got 19 goals on the year
blowing away his previous girl high still a young guy can improve that's been a great great pickup
for the previous GM by the way a Buffalo he was the one who made that trade but Josh Donne's been
amazing for Buffalo and Alex Lyon is now 14-0-2 in his last 16 starts I know there was some talk
about maybe the Sabers wanted to get a goalie at the deadline I think they wanted to reward Alex
Lyon for what he's done for them and so they put their faith in him he's certainly get it done
in the regular season we'll see if he can step up in the postseason but six straight wins now for
the Sabers 27-5 in two in their last 34 games go ahead and get your playoff tickets ready Buffalo
it's now stopped you know it's not about the streak anymore it's about what kind of success can
this team have in the playoffs yeah just to throw in a thought about Lyon I kind of understood
why some people were thinking maybe Goldtender might be something that Buffalo made a play for
simply because if you look at his career he's never really shoulder the burden of the load at any
of the stops that he's made in his career whether you talk about his time you know in Philadelphia his
time in Florida his time in Detroit he was always was sharing that crease with someone who was
a little bit more veteran or a little bit more experienced and probably the true number one
Goldtender this year he cemented himself with that Buffalo Sabers team as the number one Goldtender
and he's been playing as you said 14-0 into in his last 16 if you can get 16 games straight out
of your Goldtender where your team's earning at least a point that's phenomenal and that goes to
show just Buffalo clicking and moving in all the right directions but Eddie I want to talk about
a pair of games that went into overtime and we'll begin with Columbus riding a three game win streak
playing hosts to the mammoth Utah comes into this one and rips off a win in overtime thanks to
Logan Cooley this was a back and forth game in the first two periods it went into the third tied at
three Utah jumps out to a four two lead midway through the third then Columbus battles back to
force overtime but ultimately it's Cooley in his second game or excuse me his second goal of the
game to win it for the mammoth Steven Severson Olivier Fantilly and Marchman all scoring for Columbus
in this one with Carconey Genter and Kerfoot scoring to add to Cooley what do you think of this Utah
team they've kind of really improved here since 2026 is begun what do you see it out of them that
maybe make you think hey this could be a team that's could be tricky I mean a lot of high
intel it guys that can put the puck in the net Carole Bill Melka very quietly is at an outstanding
season defensively I think that's your issue but of course they went out and got Mackenzie Weeger
and he led the team an ice time in this one 23 minutes 21 seconds picked up an assist in his debut
with the mammoth so they knew where they needed sure things up they they think they'd
addressed that at least to some extent but I thought this was the matchup of the night and I
thought this turned out to be the game of the night outstanding back and forth they had a little
bit of everything in it you had two players getting Gordy how Hattrix and Damon Severson and
Matthew Olivier but for Columbus they do get a point out of it but 13, 2 and 2 since bringing
in Rick bonus and they still can't gain any ground on Boston or Montreal it is I mean they're
doing so many good things they're playing you know they're best hockey of the year I mean they just
got to stick with it there's nothing else they can do all they can do is control what they do
but man it's got to be tough to be playing that good and having so many positive results
and just not being able to catch either one of those eastern wildcard teams yeah you're absolutely
just got to stick with it you you have to hope that fate will repay you for all your hard work right
and that you're gonna get your good karma come the time the playoffs actually start and actually
begin but yeah I watched a good chunk of this game and you're right it was by far the best game
in the night I mean goal tending was pretty good but then also goal tending had some moments where I
think both Merzlikins and Vermilka kind of wanted those goals back it was just a game that had
everything you know it was up and down it had speed it had some patches where there wasn't a lot
going on and then boom it jumped right back in it was certainly a fun game to watch and Utah gets
the victory Columbus at least earning the point as well because they're gonna need every point they
can get as we know with how tight it is not being able to pick up any ground so at least they get the
point in this one even if they fall five to four but meanwhile another game that went past 60 the
Philadelphia Flyers they take down their in-state rivals of Pittsburgh penguins in the shootout
filling now seven in three in the shootout this year while Pittsburgh has lost nine host of
Lockdown Flyers Rachel Donner has more for us on this one the Philadelphia Flyers post-trade deadline
era began with an Alex Bump NHL debut goal in a shootout win in Pittsburgh high I'm Rachel Donner
from Lockdown Flyers the younger guys led the way in this one with goals from the aforementioned
Alex Bump Denver Barkey some key playmaking from Matvee Michkoff who is now lining up on his
preferred right side oh and tip it and of course the shootout winner lay clockwork from Trevor
Zegris Jamie Drysdale even got into a genuine fight in this one defending the honor of Cam York
the Flyers and Penns for that matter had trouble getting shots on goal in this one the Flyers had
40 shot attempts with a mere 15 getting through to Skinner but Dan Bladar at the other end came
up big when he needed to especially stopping all three Penns shootout attempts this game also saw
Luke Glendending in his first game with the Flyers after getting picked up on waivers will have
more on it on the Monday show yeah so I do think it's interesting there you know she brings up
Owen Tippett he got his 20th goal of the year that's now four straight seasons for him that he's
broken the 20 goal mark Trevor Zegris death taxes and Trevor Zegris scoring in the shootout seems
to be the three things that you can absolutely count on in this world Dan Bladar good 2023 as
she mentioned I'm really shocked to see that Stewart Skinner after only seeing 15 shots would
still give up three goals in this one so not the best performance out of him of Pittsburgh fans
you think they're they're getting a little nervous here because I mean they've lost their last
three they've lost nine times in the shootout if you're a Pittsburgh fan are you a little worried
I don't think so Crosby's back skating he's he's added that he doesn't wear the non-contact Jersey so
he's going to come back sooner than expected no surprise there there are two two and two since the
Olympic break without Crosby and of course Malkin has the five games suspension so those guys will
be back soon I think they're going to be fine I don't I don't think there's any reason to worry
right now in Pittsburgh and you mentioned Trevor Zegris I don't know if it's him or Mason
McTavish or the ducks that are the best shootout performers currently in the NHL I think it's a coin
flip both those guys are just automatic in the shootout it's unreal what they're doing right now we'll
have to see maybe I don't know I'll fill it off in Anaheim play each other one more time before
the end of the year but if they do I'm praying for that came to go into the shootout just to see
see both of them it's too bad we can't go back to the old Olympic ways where you can just have
the same guys keep shooting off EJ OJ exactly I'd love to just see Zegris and McTavish for each team
just go round after round so you can get it done but yeah Pittsburgh second in the Metro still
you know Philly fighting for a spot they're fifth in the Metro trying to get up into one of those
wild card spots if they can I think Philadelphia was one of my bubble teams that you know back in
December I said yeah they could probably in but also if you told me they didn't make it in I
wouldn't be too shocked by that they're starting to get some good play right now especially when you
look at the scores tonight I mean Alex Bump that's his first Denver Barkey just his third you
know it's other guys that are contributing it's not just the Matt Beameach cops it's not just
the Owen Tipets although he did score tonight but it's you know getting full complement of players
that are starting to score for Philly and in the case of Pittsburgh they're only going to get
stronger when they of course get you know the two big guys back in Crosby and Malkin but coming
up we've got a lot more to cover including Boston going for their 12th straight win and home
against the caps the maim is looking for number three in a row against Columbus and Carolina caps
off their Canada road trip in Calgary stay tuned we've got plenty more coming up on lockdown NHL
game night oh could this vintage store be any cuter right and the best part they accept discover
accept discover in a little place like this I don't think so Jennifer oh yeah huh discover
is accepted where I'd like to shop come on baby get with the times right so we shouldn't get
the parachute pants these are making a comeback I think discoverers accepted at 99% of places
that take credit cards nationwide based on the February 2025 Nielsen report
TJ Shalot Eddie Garcia here with you happy to have you along for the ride just
quick reminder if you haven't checked out the every day or club you're completely missing out

with the show host and so much more but starting off this second segment let's talk about the
Bruins they've loved their home cooking recently they want 11 games coming into this one tonight
and after tonight make that 12 in a row as they oust the caps host of locked on Bruins Ian McClaren's
got more from the Bruins side of things the Boston Bruins earned a huge two points on Saturday afternoon
against the Washington capitals and it came a day after general manager Don Sweeney neither bought
nor really sold at the NHL trade deadline he believes in the fabric of this group he believes
they're competitive and should challenge for a playoff spot and one of the guys that they brought
in last off season who we can consider as an internal rental was Victor Erbison he's been one of
Boston's best players since the Olympic break and he scored a beauty on a breakaway against Logan
Thompson to get the game winning goal this afternoon for the Boston Bruins it was their 12th straight
win at home they haven't been that great on the road and they're going too Pittsburgh to play
the penguins tomorrow a team without Sydney Crosby due to injury of getting malk and due to
suspension so they have to have to must win that game tomorrow to secure another big two points
and create some space between them and the competition in the Eastern conference playoff race
and good points there about Victor Erbison he ended up with the game winner that breakaway
goal that we're talking about there Pavel Zucker got on the board first for the Bruins is 16th of
the year and Alexi protest would make things one one only about three minutes later but that would
be the only goal for Washington and this one is Arvinson would get his 18th and then Elias Linholm
tacking on the empty netter just to seal things up Swaman a good performance for him 22 of 23
Thompson 27 of 29 is the caps starting to skid a little bit here Thompson's not playing his best
hockey that we expected a lot of people had him near the top of the business charts you know back
in November December and in that time frame but certainly he's falling off a little bit here
as have the caps we all know about what they did at the trade deadline and how it seems like
upper management is pretty much throwing in the towel on this one but Boston cruising to victory here
yeah 12 straight at home as you mentioned this was a Boston team that didn't have a lot of great
expectations bring in a rookie coach in Marco's term they've had a great season and certainly are
you know ahead of where a lot of people thought they would be but for Washington you know
how do you tell me that you don't we don't think that you're good enough to do anything in the
playoffs without telling me well you trade John Carlson and how does the team respond to that I mean
they weren't very good in this game this is one of those four point games right you win your two points
back of Boston you lose your six and they lose and that's just the devastating loss but coming off
of that trade which just blindsided everybody including Ovechkin saying was the toughest day of his
career not surprised that you didn't see a lot of fight in the capitals in this one and that's
unfortunate I mean management has to make very tough decisions sometimes they did in this case
but just not surprised the message kind of came down and it translated into what we saw in the ice
with the capitals yeah and like management does have to make those tough decisions but you can't
be shocked by the result of your decisions you know I don't think anybody in Washington is
necessarily wondering why they didn't get a victory in tonight's game I think they know it's
going to be a little rough around that locker room for a little while until you know guys kind of
get used to the new look of the team and missing some of their former teammates that are on the
road that are now you know off on to other teams so it'll be interesting to see what Washington does
this offseason how much are they doing a retool like New York or they go and full on rebuild it'll
be really curious to see what happens there but Eddie let's talk about your kings I mean we've
seen them make a bunch of moves the season brewing in Pinarian they're pretty active at the deadline
with Scott Lawton and then shipping off Warren Fogel and Corey Perry but Montreal mounts to come
back in this one for three L.A. had the three two lead with just over 13 minutes left to play
but Montreal gets a couple of late goals from Slovkowski and Suzuki and the Habs end up winning this
one four to three I honestly thought that maybe this one was going into over time as well but
what did you see out of your kings in this one and also out of the Canadians well the kings are one
and two since the head coaching change they promoted DJ Smith the assistant but they played miles
better since they made the coaching change it was like a weight was lifted off of them the way that
they're flying around the ice and they were dominant in the first period of this game they outshot
the Canadians 16 to one problem was they only got one goal out of it Jakob Dobich held the fort
and then Montreal had a span of two goals and less than two minutes in the third period and it
was we're able to pull it out the Kings played really well in this but they had you picked a bad time
to have a couple of bad moments and Montreal absolutely took advantage and all props to them and
you're isle of kopski I mean I thought he was terrific in the Olympics he's a guy who started
to feel himself a little bit he was playing with some swagger in this one had a couple of really
nice goals and then set up mix of zuki for the game winner so he had a terrific game he's caring
over that Olympic momentum into the regular season here for Montreal Scott Lawton by the way did
score a goal in his first game for LA but we'll talk about you know a team that the kings are chasing
an opportunity to gain ground in the wild card they didn't they missed opportunity although
there were a lot of good things here but credit Jakob Dobich and the Canadians were coming up clutch
late in the game but the king stayed three points out of that wild card spot in the West and
just can't let those opportunities slip away yeah Dobich good on 35 of 38 in the win and speaking
of Scott Lawton he was one of three players on the night to score goals in their
table views for their new teams all all kings too by the way our former kings that's exactly
right you got Lawton the new king and the other two guys former kings and we're going to get to them
here in just a second as a matter of fact we're going to see one pretty soon because the blue and
whites went at it tonight the Maple Leafs hope hosting the lightning and considering what we
saw at the deadline from Toronto they're pretty much admitting that their season is all but done
at this point and you know the lightning had no problem with the Maple Leafs they win this one
5-2 and just like Lawton scoring in his debut for the Kings former King Corey Perry he scores
in his return for the bolts Nikita Kutraov had three assists in a four goal first period
for the lightning and that's really when they just took control I mean you score four goals
in one in one period that game is pretty much over Ryan McDonough's fifth Jake Gensel's 27th
Perry's 12th as first for this new team Oliver Bjork strand his 11th scoring on at the power play
so Toronto you know they're just going to be limping to the finish line here but Tampa Bay
starting to heat up I really like the moves that they did bringing back a familiar face in Corey
Perry and Vasilevsky was strong in this one 27 of 29 this is a team I think that every every year
you get that team that heats up at exactly the right time and really causes havoc and I think
that could be Tampa Bay this year yeah that wouldn't be a surprise either a lot of expectations
going into this year getting a guy like Corey Perry obviously know exactly what they're going to
get from him veteran leadership been there done that what is it four or five years in a row playing
in the finals ridiculous I wouldn't be surprised that they extended that to another year this year
but Nikita Kutraov continues to be one of the best players in the league he have four assists in
this one goes over a hundred points on the season and I still somehow think he's actually underrated
but he's fun to watch because of what he can do passing the pocket he can't score
but as far as you know just seeing the game a little bit different differently the most players
and understanding when guys are open and when guys are in good scoring positions he's he's
amazing to watch and had another strong game in this one and a pretty easy win for Tampa Bay.
Anthony Stolars gets the loss for Toronto made 28 saves on 32 attempts after his last game he
turned out a golden performance he was up in the 40s and saves in a victory for the Maple Leafs
five two year final there as lightning win in the final game for this segment the Winnipeg Jets
and Josh Morris he win it in overtime three two to earn their 26th victory of the year these are
two teams on the outside looking in but Winnipeg still has an outside chance I mean they need
some things to break right but they're not anywhere near mathematically eliminated unlike Vancouver
who we know is at the bottom of every set of standings no matter how you want to split it but
this was a good win for Winnipeg to equal out Mark Schifley with three points a goal into a cis
Linas Carlson for Vancouver also with a multiple point night a goal and an assist in this one
hella buck not tested too much he gets the win 21 of 23 Kevin Lincoln in on the other hand he
certainly was tested 32 of 35 in the loss as Winnipeg just threw everything including the kitchen sink
at Kevin Lincoln in tonight yeah I mentioned that Utah Columbus was my matchup of the night this
would probably be the one I had ranked lowest and yet it actually was not a bad game it was a pretty
competitive game Winnipeg comes up big late Gabe Vallardi has some of the most underrated hands in
the NHL especially when he's the entire around the net he scores a power play goal to even it up
and then Josh Morrissey first game back since he got hurt in the Olympics shot off the skate
of filiparonic and in a tough way to end it for Vancouver but that's kind of the way it's been
going for Vancouver this year yeah absolutely I mean at this point you just want to keep going
back to basics and figure out what you got because you got to start thinking about the offseason
and any moves and any contracts and who you want to bring back Vancouver right now they're just
kind of buried under that rubble and they've just got to keep playing these games and if you're a
team out there who's a bubble team who's maybe trying to get into that final wild card spot if you've
got Vancouver on your schedule you have to earn those two points I mean those this is a Vancouver
team that you should beat and you need to beat if you want to make it into the playoffs if you're
kind of bouncing around you've got to take it to Vancouver and they're going to kind of be the
punching bags here going for the next couple months but it is what it is I think we all knew that
was coming right after the Quinn Hughes trade and that was pretty early on in the season but we've
got a few more games to get to Carolina wrapping up their Pacific Northwest road trip with a
showdown at the saddle dome we got two plucky squads I like calling them plucky because that's
just how that's what they remind me of the Islanders and sharks playing out in Cali and the crack
in we're hosting Ottawa that one was a gong show in Washington we're going to wrap it up on the
other side of this is locked on NHL game they

welcome back to locked on NHL game night let's start this final segment with the best team in
the east in carolina they didn't make much of a splash at the trade deadline they're kind of
known for not doing that even though a lot of people thought maybe this was the year for them to
try things a little bit differently they just had that Nick Deloria acquisition from Philly but
tonight they struggled on their final game of their western road trip with Calgary they fall
by a final score five four they they battled back boy they scored their fourth goal of the game
which is 11 seconds left to go in regulation I think if they had another three or four minutes they
could have possibly pushed this thing into overtime they just kind of ran out of runway but
this carolina gets on the board first thanks to Seth Jarvis and then four consecutive flames goals
gives them the four one lead they would tack on their fifth in that third but not before carolina
could get back and make it a five four game they just couldn't push this one in overtime
bushy gets the loss after making 20 saves and Dustin Wolf gets the win he was good on 25 of 29
are you a little surprised at carolina being a little quiet at the deadline yesterday I was
they were one of the teams I thought I really like them a lot there's a lot of good things to
like about this team but they I felt like they needed one other piece and they didn't go out and
get it so I was surprised just like I was surprised in this game quite frankly you know after the
first period it's one nothing carolina and you figure Calgary's just kind of going through the
motions then they come out and explode in the second period and thoroughly outplayed the hurricanes
they righted the ship in the third but it was too little too late and I know you could say well
they played back-to-back they were in Edmonton the night before well you if they don't play well
then you can pull that out right but you look at Montreal played back-to-back in anaheim in LA
and they played a good third period to pull out a win so to me it's it's a convening excuse
carolina took a second period off and it cost him in this winning good on Calgary for showing up
and being pros and putting up a great fight and getting a win and another guy we we mentioned
I should say Ryan Stroh it is first game as a Calgary flame got a goal for his new team in this one
just keeps happening it happens across the board Joel Faribley had two goals in this one his 14th
and 15th of the year now I'm a kind I'm the kind of guy that I disagree with that statement a little
bit about you know playing on back-to-back nights because I when you're playing on back-to-back nights
and as part of a four game western road trip when you're three time zones away I think it's a
it's tough I mean carolina would end up going two and two on this road trip they lost to the crack
and to start they had two wins in the middle there they beat Vancouver because everybody's beating
Vancouver and then they beat Edmonton last night as you alluded to but two and two on that road trip
for the hurricanes I do that travels real tough especially up in the Pacific Northwest when you've
got four games in just under a week but carolina I think they can afford to drop this one they did
they're just kind of have to when they come back they you know when they get back home they've
got a couple more games now at home they've got to write the ship and not let that one loss become
a trend so let's look at the aisles and the sharks you know two teams in the playoff conversation
right now the aisle sitting in a playoff spot with the sharks just outside but they're certainly in
that wild card situation a win tonight would help shoot them into a wild card spot in fact but
tonight it was just the aisles they were a hair better they win this one two one in a game that
ended in over time let's go ahead and hear from locked on aisles host gill martin who's got more for
us here the new york islanders find a way they beat the sannos a sharks two to one in over time
bowhoor that with the game winner on a beautiful pass by Matthew shaffer the islanders are now
a perfect nine and oh and games decided by over time and got to give a lot of credit to ilia
sarokin in this win he came up with some big saves to keep the game even at one one and then the
islanders find a way to do it in ot braiden shen made his islanders debut can't say he was
outstanding but he certainly did play and and is starting to learn the islanders system
the more important thing for the islanders they end their two game losing streak get off the
night on this road trip and now they have to prepare to play the st. Louis blues next on twos
day night for more in depth daily coverage of your new york islanders check out the locked on
islanders podcast yeah sarokin was great in this one ultimately turned aside 30 of 31 and
I just love the youthful talent in this game across the board when you talk about Matthew shaffer
macklin celebrini could throw will smith in there as well i mean this is the future of the
NHL on these two teams and it's so much fun to watch yeah no doubt it was this was a fun game
even though it was a low scoring game and credit both goalies and sarokin certainly needs to be in
the discussion for the best that he's having an outstanding year and he was very very good in this
game but yeah this was fun watching there was a moment in over time when it was celebrini
and shaffer kind of going head to head there as well um but you know this was an opportunity for
sanose we'll talk about why in a second but they're right there on the cusp of getting one of those
wildcard spots in the west they do get a point out of it but again when there's an opportunity to
get the two points on home ice there uh you got to try and take advantage of the moment so they
get a point they're one point out of a wildcard but uh it was a big opportunity there to get the
two points instead more about macklin celebrini so he's got goals and back-to-back games he's got points
and four straight and he has seven total points in those four games i mean this is just by far
one of the best rookie seasons we have ever seen in the history of this game and i really
no one i don't think expected this level of production out of him yes he was a number one overall
pick but when he was coming out no one was touting him you know as the next connermic david and
that next generational talent and i don't want to put that on him in just his rookie year either
because we've seen plenty of rookies start off real hot and then kind of fall off in their sophomore
year but macklin celebrini unbelievable player i'm really excited to see you know what the sharks do
around him and if the sharks can become one of these powerhouse teams here in the next five years
this his career gets going but in this one not good enough islanders take it two to one so
let's jump to our final game on the night and boy this was a gong show 11 total goals in this one
but it was Ottawa who put seven in the back of the net they win against Seattle seven to four
Tyler Clevve and Dylan Cousin Shane Pinto Michael Amodio Warren Vogel on a new team
Tim Stutzle Brady Kitschuk all scoring for Ottawa meanwhile Jacob Millinson Eli Tolvin and
Maddie Beneers and Brandon Montor getting the markers for Seattle i mean this was just a game
when you take a look there was only a total of 57 shots in this game all marks saw 21
record saw 36 but i mean 11 goals on 57 shots in this game defense was very few and far between
yeah i thought Ottawa played with a lot of desperation in this one uh knowing that they had to win
to remain four points back of Boston that final wildcard spot in the east and as i mentioned
Seattle's holding on to the final wildcard spot in the west they needed to come out a lot stronger
on home ice uh in this one against you know an equal of comparable comparable team to them and
they just didn't show up in this one and uh it it cost them and uh if you want to stay in one of those
playoffs spots uh you got to be a lot more competitive than this how that was a very disappointing
showing for Seattle they've now lost back to back games meanwhile Ottawa has won back to back
games so you've got teams there going in opposite directions and Ottawa has been playing with
desperation you can see it in their last couple of contests Seattle on the other hand uh they're
gonna have to try and and do something here and wake up a little bit otherwise they're gonna slip
right out of playoff contention but we'll see what goes on with them as we move forward but that'll
