Garda Officers Demand Fairness After Scandal

On April 21st, at the Garda Representative Association Conference in Westport, Detective

Garda Aiman Kanane and seven colleagues from Limerick and Claire got a standing ovation

from fellow officers.

Kanane was at the heart of the so-called bike scandal, wrongly accused of theft, suspended

for three years, and fully cleared.

The others faced long suspensions too, mostly overusing discretion on road traffic tickets

with some charges dropped by prosecutors.

These cases stem from a heavy-handed probe by the National Bureau of Criminal Investigations.

For Kunane, it started with a simple act of kindness during COVID, loaning a community

member's bike when folks were locked down.

The Limerick group got hit for canceling minor tickets, something cops often do with judgment.

Even after clearances, suspensions dragged on for years.

The fallout has been rough, crushing morale across the force and leaving deep scars on families.

Officers called it a living nightmare, with zero trust in leadership.

One officers mom passed during his suspension, and he couldn't even be there fully.

Society wants cops using common sense, but now it feels like policing by the book only.

At the conference, members voted unanimously for a public inquiry into how Garda Management

botched these cases.

They also pushed for an independent appeals process to fix the broken suspension system,

calling it seriously flawed.

This standing ovation signals a pushback guard eye, demanding fairness so they can focus

on real community work without fearing which hunts from above.
