CalTrans preps for tomorrow's no-kings protests with freeway gates.

Some background on this year's very active rattlesnake season.

Then one of South LA's only golf courses reopens this weekend.

I'm Julia Paskin, and this is the LA Report, evening edition from LAS News.

CalTrans installed gates at some on and off ramps of the 101 freeway in downtown LA.

Transportation correspondent Kavish Harjim has more.

A spokesperson for CalTrans said the gates will be a permanent fixture at the Los Angeles street on an off ramps.

They were installed ahead of the no-kings day protests, which are scheduled to take place on Saturday.

The CalTrans spokesperson said the California Highway Patrol requested the gates,

since pedestrians and past protests have used the ramps to get onto the freeway.

They'll only be used as needed this spokesperson said.

Two people have died in Southern California due to rattlesnake bites this month, a much higher rate than normal.

One reason for the increased rattlesnake activity is the heat, says court,

clopping of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Once those temperatures warm up, what we see is an increase in activity,

because these snakes are coming out to find mates and breed,

and they're also out and about foraging.

Clopping says despite rattlesnakes danger to humans,

they also play an important role in the ecosystem by keeping rodent populations in check.

Venomous snakes kill about five people per year across the whole country on average,

according to federal data, to protect yourself while hiking,

keep an eye out for snakes, keep your distance, and wear boots or gators to protect from bites.

Welcome back to the LA Report Evening Edition, I'm Julia Paskin.

An Anaheim assembly member wants to put the Anaheim back in the Angels' name. Laura Dukes has more.

The name change would only come into play if a couple things happen.

The city would have to sell or lease Angel Stadium, and they need an exemption from the Surplus Land Act.

That's a state law requiring local governments to prioritize affordable housing developments on large properties they sell.

Democrat Avelino Valencia introduced the bill. He says the team's history belongs to its home city of 60 years, and the name should reflect that.

They became the Anaheim Angels in 1997 before changing to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2005.

The team dropped Anaheim all together in 2016 to be just the Los Angeles Angels.

One of the only places for golf in South LA is the Maggie Hathaway Golf Course.

It's reopening for play Saturday after a major renovation. Kato Hernandez reports.

For years, the nine-hole course was run down. It hadn't been improved much since opening in 1962.

So when the U.S. Open came to LA in 2023, organizers gave back by funding an upgrade for the course.

The renovation includes an expanded driving range and practice green. A new clubhouse is also coming soon.

The course is named after Maggie Mae Hathaway, an avid black golfer and sports columnist for the LA Sentinel in the 1950s.

Hathaway is known for her work to desegregate golf locally, especially at public golf courses. Kato Hernandez, LA News.

The Culver City Book Festival is back Sunday. It's happening at the Vendum Museum from 10 in the morning till 5 in the afternoon,

where you can meet local authors, small presses, and literary nonprofits.
