Adam Peters just dropped a cannonball on the NFL, signaling the end of the rebuild by making Odafe Oweh one of the highest-paid edge rushers in football. With $68 million in guarantees, Oweh brings elite 4.39 speed to a Dan Quinn defense designed to unleash game-wreckers. This top-of-market financial statement proves the front office is ready to pay a premium for blue-chip talent while still maintaining significant salary cap flexibility for future moves.
The protection plan for Jayden Daniels is officially locked in following a massive extension for Laremy Tunsil, moving Brandon Coleman permanently to left guard. As Tim Settle returns for a defensive tackle homecoming and Amik Robertson adds necessary grit to the secondary, the roster identity is rapidly shifting toward explosive versatility. Which remaining targets like Devin Lloyd or Tariq Woolen will Peters prioritize next to finish this defensive overhaul?

You are locked on commanders your daily podcast on the Washington commanders part of the
locked on podcast network your team every day.
This is locked on commanders part of the locked on podcast network the number one sports podcast
network and I'm David Harrison your guy on the ground credential member of the media
covering the Washington commanders for W USA nine coming up on today's episode misses
and targets left for day to a free agency and the return of Tim Settle but first it
took four and a half hours but when a P made a splash he dropped a cannonball on the
national football league all that coming up on today's episode of locked on commanders
part of the locked on podcast network your team every day 129.5 million dollars in guaranteed
money that is what Adam Peters dished out on day one of for agency not all of it to
new players joining the roster certainly some resigning that we'll talk about here in
just a moment that is a lot of money and I saw an NFL network while I was watching all
the action like a lot of you were over two billion dollars in contracts not all guaranteed
but over two billion dollars in contracts issued out today or agreed to I should say
agreed to today in the national football league day one of the open negotiating period did
not let down as far as the entirety of the NFL did I know some of you were a little bit
anxious a little bit nervous especially there as we got two three hours into things about
the Washington commanders but they did eventually make a splash with a fade away edge russia
from the Los Angeles Chargers coming to the Washington commanders 129.5 million dollars
in guarantees like I said and what we don't have all the firm numbers on the new contracts
and Laramie tonsils extension which who would have thought that'd be the second biggest
story of the day we will get to that here in just a little bit we don't have the hard
numbers so I can't tell you the exact cap hits for everybody but just estimating and taking
some percentages of usual numbers and all that kind of stuff can give you a wide bracket
here but roughly roughly between 40 to 55 million dollars in cap space still remaining
for the Washington players I know that's a 15 million dollar spread but again it's all estimates
it's all roughly it's all averages it's none of it is exact so somewhere around there
basically what I'm telling you is the Washington commanders have a ton of money still left so
don't worry if there's holes on the roster that you see which we will go through the Washington
airs have the resources to go ahead and address a good amount of those holes on day two which
for the record day two is 6 p.m. to tomorrow 6 p.m. I'm going to try to go live around 6 p.m.
every day this week during the free agency period so anything that happened after 6 p.m.
will be considered day two so if it happens tonight you're going to bear with me here
because I'm not a robot I can't just work 24 hours a day I got to have hours and this
is the end of my day one we will come back in the morning for day two and so on and so
forth so yeah roughly 40 to 55 million dollars in cap space a Daffy oh way of course is
the crown jewel on day one probably honestly going to end up being the crown jewel for
the entire entirety of the free agency period and that's okay no no problem with eating
your dessert first right so that's what the Washington mayor is doing here four years
100 million dollars up to 100 million dollars is the reported number on the deal 25 million
dollars annual average value ranks ninth among current NFL edge rusher contracts and I don't
think that was necessarily by mistake Daffy oh way David Mologeta his agent probably wanted
to get him into the top 10 they were able to do that 68 million dollars of it is guaranteed
again we don't know how much of that is an impact current year we don't know if there's void
years we don't know the full life of the contract but 100 million dollars 25 million dollars
annual average value Daffy oh way coming to the Washington commanders coming off of a really
really strong 25 especially the finish in 2025 had a three sack performance they're at the end
of their season with the Los Angeles Charter unfortunately in a loss but it is really just a big
big step into you know seems hate that term rebuild but when you have a new defensive coordinator
coming in who has new ideas who wants to do things a little bit differently you essentially have
to rebuild your unit right you have to rebuild the defense you got to rebuild the roster not
necessarily from the old sense of like this team is trash let's just get rid of everybody and
and bring back all new people but you need people that gonna get a fit what you're trying to do
and the Washington mayors needed a closer off the edge we talked about this in the build up
to free agency Dorrance Armstrong when he got injury against the Dallas Cowboys lost for
the rest of the season to that knee injury he was closing man and we go back to 2024 we talked
about it all during that season how Dorrance Armstrong's getting penetration getting hurries
getting pressures getting in the backfield doing all that stuff when he wasn't finishing 2025
we wanted to see Dorrance Armstrong start finishing he started doing that and unfortunately
suffers at ACL injury now he's gonna be coming back in 2026 off of that knee injury and we just
don't know what that's gonna look like so the Washington commanders if you're looking at your roster
based off what you know you know you don't have a closer you got a D-Tridge wise who's coming
off his own serious injury who was never a keen past rusher closer type anyway he was always an
edge center run defender type of guy got Given Kim Law who might play a little bit above big end
according to Dan Quinn when he told me in Indianapolis but where's the past rush juice right Frankie
Lou as we saw can't do it by himself he's got to be able to play off of somebody Odafe Odafe
away is the guy that can absolutely do that for the Washington commanders and that's why I'm so
excited and if you were watching our build up to this whole thing you already know he was the edge
that I continuously kept mocking I know some people liked Jalen Phillips Trey Hendrickson has the name
recognition all that stuff once the Max Crosby Trey just became way too much for Adam Peters to
ever consider getting into Adafee Oway became my number one guy I'm gonna slot him in on the right
again don't worry too much about the slotting and all that stuff that can always change it's really
just putting people in position to kind of get an overview on the roster I'm gonna keep Doran
Armstrong as the number one left end we'll see what he looks like when he comes back healthy the
good thing about Adafee Oway though and another thing that Doron Tay Jones a new defense coordinator
watching it once is versatility if you need Adafee Oway to come off the left side guess what he can
come off the left side you need him to come off the right side he can do that you need him to show
show pressure well he's good to be on the line so he's always showing pressure but you need him to
fall back so you can bring pressure from other places he can do that you need him to move inside
the A gap and mug up in between the defensive tackles he can do that that is the reason that Adafee Oway
became my number one target in this free agency build up so early and why he stayed there and why I'm
just through the roof if you can't tell that the Washington commanders went out and they got him
4-3-9 speed coming out of Penn State in the NFL draft he can play wide nine he's in an impact on
Johnny new and Doran pain why is he an impact the interior defense align because you have that
threat on the outside alignment they got to account for them running backs they got to account for
them tight ends that are chipping you got to get out there and chip that guy it spreads people out
and you have these three tech type of defensive tackles Johnny new and Doran pain we know how to shoot
those gaps know how to get in and in space and work in space you give them the opportunity to do
that and Adafee Oway finally gives you exactly what Dan Quinn told us in the Indianapolis Cowman
Combine they were looking for saying quote length and speed for sure on the defensive side that allows
you to either guard people or the pass rush how do you go affect the QB we clearly need that part of
our game to improve and quote and they have clearly brought the guy in to go ahead and do that in
Udafee Oway so again took a little bit longer for the for the splash to come but man when it came
it came in a big big way some other guys Jalen Phillips he ended up going elsewhere honestly
I'll top my head I can't remember where he went anymore I just know he's not with Philadelphia
equals anymore amen boy Mafe goes to Cincinnati for 20 million dollars annual average value
so yeah for me again it's a great it's a great situation I know a lot of people boy Mafe
was the primary some people like Jalen Phillips and Trey Hendricks and even surprisingly
for a fan base that is very determined on this team getting younger Trey Hendrickson still had his
his niche support as well as depending for agency but Adafee Oway look they could potentially
get another one I don't think they'll get another one if we look at this roster you know again
Doran's Armstrong Javante Jean Baptiste coming off their injuries yeah you don't know what they're
gonna be but you don't necessarily just want to wash them off the roster right away either if they
were to do that they probably would have released them by now Dietrich Wise is back obviously
he's not going anywhere Drake Jackson we know is kind of a pet project of madam Peters and
certainly has shown plenty of potential himself and then interior defensive line I don't think
I wouldn't expect another free agent edge is the way I guess I should put this probably not a trade
for Jonathan Grenard at this point although I wouldn't hate it be surprised by it but I wouldn't
hate it but we'll see what the Washington mayors end up doing the rest of the time now let's move
to the other side of the trenches big man Laramie Tunsell the extension is done he's locked in for
three years we'll dive into that and many more moves coming up next on today's episode of

Laramie tonsil not a new player obviously on the team he's returning but he's returning in a
pretty big way I think most of us at least I know I put it out here on the show and if you believe me
you probably expected it because I put it out there expected three years around 90 million dollars
right 30 million dollars per year on average turns out we had the annual average value pretty much
nailed it comes in at 30.1 million dollars annual average value so if you're going to
fear to squeeze that 0.1 million out of me I guess that's fair it gets that's high standards but
now Laramie tonsil's extension two years 60.2 million dollars 30.1 million dollars annual average
value is the highest annual average value of any left tackle in the national football league which
is exactly what we expected it to be reset the market all that stuff what I was concerned with
was Laramie tonsil we talked about this on some recent episodes was the potential Laramie tonsil
not just resetting the market but seeing Tyler Lindermom reset the center marketer seeing you know one
of these guards get a whole lot of of you know money and resetting their markets and all that stuff
and being able to push that Laramie tonsil money up happy to say that while Laramie tonsil certainly
a business savvy person certainly knew that that possibility was out there obviously it was more
focused on getting this deal done than he was about squeezing every penny out of the wash
manage so I think you know look maybe a little bit of appreciation for Laramie tonsil as well
doing the same if you've been paying attention to social media he's been attending wizards games
I think just 24 hours before this deal now was announced he posted like three or four pictures of
him in a commander's uniform on his Instagram story which you know could always be a little bit like
look he might just be having fun with us all right guys but turns out he wasn't turns out the
deal was about done he is now locked in through 2028s Jaden Daniels blindside protector locked in
through 2028 and again look I know he wasn't a pro baller but if he asked me he definitely played
Pro Bowl caliber football in 2025 and if the wash commanders said one more than five games like
maybe even eight games probably would have been on his way to his sixth Pro Bowl which I expect him
to make this year because I expect Jaden Daniels to play more because I expect him to be healthier
and if he gets some consistency I expect him to take that step that we expected or hope to him to
take last year so blindside is secured it's something that Adam Peters talked about again at the
Indianapolis scouting combat not really specifically to Laramie tonsil but said quote it's on our
scouting staff to find the receivers lineman and running backs to support him him being Jaden
so he doesn't have to do all himself it is certainly a premium to keep him healthy and quote
what you have here is a move it's not you know the scouting department's not a rookie all that kind
of stuff but you have the effort here to keep Jaden Daniels healthy and we kind of look at
with Laramie tonsil locked in now until 2028 and with no free agent movement in the center or
guard positions we move right now Brandon Coleman into the number one spot at the left guard position
I hadn't penciled in the back up left tackle just because to me you already moved him out of the
left guard spot when he went to the left tackle for Laramie tonsil after Laramie got hurt at the
end of last season he did a pretty good job so I kind of expect him to bring some sort of guard in
they haven't yet so instead of having vacant spots on our depth chart I'm just going to take
the players that they got in the movement where they see fit or where I see fit and as you see
right now Jay and Lynn Lane is just starting outside receiver opposite term McLaren Luke McCaffrey
is in the slot things like that so that's just for now so don't get to again don't get too crazy
about the slotting because it's all going to move it's all going to change but I just want to give
a picture where we are right now and that's where we are right now including Marcus Marriota also
back on a very reasonable veteran backup deal so happy to see that last year Marcus Marriota took some
opportunities talk to some teams went out there and tried to see what was on the open market with
guys like two of tongue by Loa on the move with Kirk cousins on the move with Kyler Murray on the move
they're just there's a lot of you know there's a lot of market there's a lot of demand I should say
there's a lot of supply I should say in the in the quarterback market and not as much demand so I
think Mark Marriota kind of just seeing the riding on the wall so you know what we just get that
side a little get this out of the way enjoy the rest of my off season with my family and get
back to work in Washington in 2026 new for agent brought in a meek Robinson cornerback coming over
from the Detroit Lions organization and I know not a lot of fans were super excited about this
especially with it being the first signing I have a feeling that a fedafe away came through and then
Laramie tonsil came through and then Marcus came through and then a meek Robinson came through the
reaction would have been a little bit less cold towards a meek Robinson but a meek Robinson nonetheless
you know look the situation is the timing is what it is two years sixteen million dollars eight
million dollars annual average value ties him for the 37th highest annual average value in the
national football league so this is not you know what I mean like some super big deal I would not
necessarily take this as like great this guy is going to be a starting corner back for the
Washington commanders you know we're in whatever situation nine point three million dollars guaranteed
I think it's a solid veteran deal it's a deal that will you know give them some depth because when
you look at the depth chart right now you have trade in the second year corner Mikey say in or so
third year corner and then behind them you've got a bunch of futures contracts carlin vigors tray
Hawkins Quantres night Darius rush all on futures contracts you don't really have any established
guy so bringing in a cheap established guy nothing wrong with that so while right now I'm penciling
in a meek Robinson Robertson as the starting nickel corner movie Mikey say they're still outside
I don't think in any way shape or form this prevents the Washington commanders from going out there
and making a deal for another corner or targeting one in the draft if they see fit so don't think
it's a prohibitive move whatsoever but this dude has got a lot of supporters out there in the
world they've he's got Dan Campbell if you look at video Dan Campbell online talking about how
how great he loves his competitiveness and all those things and here's the thing I love about him
Dorontay Jones remember Dorontay Jones comes from the NFC North comes from the Minnesota Viking so
a meek Robertson has been in the NFC North for the last two years Dorontay has been watching him
face his receivers there's actually a really cool clip where Dorontay or a meek Robert Robertson
is getting in the face of Justin Jefferson Minnesota Vikings White receiver and he's jawing at him
and stuff like that and and Justin Jefferson is asked about it at a press conference says oh you know
I know a meek that she's kind of how he is he's a dog he's a competitor I love it nothing disrespectful
nothing like that and granted Justin Jefferson from my understanding and a meek actually go back to
before their NFL days but if Justin Jefferson knows a meek right like he kind of says I know a meek
then so do other people in the building there's something about him something about his approach
something about the way he plays that attracted Dorontay Jones to him I promise you Adam Peters
is just not just out here bringing in a meek Robertson on the first day of for agency
without Dorontay Jones saying yes this is the guy that I want okay I we don't have confirmation of
that but I'll get confirmation of it for you but I promise you this is the guy that Dorontay Jones
wants so this is kind of one of the rules of for agency if you saw the morning up so I said
just because a guy doesn't make sense to you or me because a meek Robertson like we didn't talk
about a meek Robertson one time leading up to free agency right just because it doesn't make sense to
you me that we don't see it doesn't mean there's not a vision there let it let it play out let's see
what happens before we go crazy here Dorontay Jones from his own mouse quotes what you want people to
see first is joy the joy shows a certain sense of selflessness among the team it shows the overall
team defense guys playing for each other and quote that is what Dorontay Jones told WSA 9 he wants
in his players so if he's asking for a meek Robertson on day one for agency got to believe he sees
that he knows that it's there in a meek to me I think he pushes Jonathan Jones out I think this
probably eliminate Johnson Jones coming back but we'll see what happens are like I said not really
prohibitive anybody but if you're looking at like back end veteran slot I think probably Jonathan
Jones Tim settle how about Tim settle guys three years 25.5 million dollar max value contract
eight million dollars annual average value the 41st ranked defensive tackle contract in the NFL
as of right now so again a very cheap deal very depth related deal defensive tackle depth interior
defensive lineman was having a really good year in 2025 for the Houston Texans before he suffered
an injury Adam Peters at the NFL scouting commites said quote if a guy can do multiple things that
versatility is probably more of a premium now Dorontay did a good job of explaining how the front
is multiple end quote so again this is probably a guy that Dorontay Jones had identified former
Washington draft pick 2018 Washington draft pick was here through the 2021 NFL season left in 2022
to go to Buffalo eventually ended up in Houston now he's coming back to Washington I only covered him
for one year so when I go see him in the locker room for the first time when we get on the zoom
he is not going to recognize me so he's going to say hi to a lot of people but he ain't going to say
hi to me because I promise you he does not recognize me but I recognize him and I like you and I'm happy
to see the Virginia Tech Hockey coming back to Washington as a free agent what about the players
of the commanders missed out on and the targets for day two that's coming up next on today's episode

we're wrapping up this day one free agency episode of locks on commanders we talked about the
gem of the day dafe oh wait adressure coming over from the Los Angeles Chargers former Baltimore
Ravens so if you're confused by the thumbnail image because it used to be a Baltimore Raven shot
out to our friends over at booe tv who cover the Baltimore Ravens they sent me some pictures that
they took of him and that's what we use for our thumbnail for this episode bringing them back east
play college of Penn State from New Jersey he's an east coast guy now he gets to be back on the east
coast also the resigning Laramie Tunsell resigning in Marcus Marriota Amig Robertson cornerback
brought in and Tim Settle coming back defensive line and coming back to the Washington
commanders but they did miss out on some players and I say miss out on some players would be very
careful here I can tell you this Ben standing says Ben standing one of our one of the beer reporters
obviously most of you probably know him says that the watchmakers did go after Alec Pierce
put a lot of money on the table I heard I saw another report from a person like quite honestly
don't know and usually I don't even say these things on the show because I don't know them but the
story is the word on the street as they like to say is that they offered him about 30 million
dollars per year which is more than the Indianapolis culture paying them on the deal he agreed to take
he basically just didn't want to leave in he didn't want to leave Daniel Jones but Jason
light wow Mike Evans just popped up on the screen forgive me Adam Peters went after Alec Pierce
this is rule number one of the rules for watching for agency that I dropped the Monday Monday morning
ahead of for agency which is it takes more it takes two sometimes more to tango and in that situation
Adam Peters came to the dance floor Alec Pierce went to the dance floor in Indianapolis I don't blame
Adam Peters for that because that's just the way the business goes so some of these other players
look he might have gone after him he might not have gone after him my understanding is that he
wasn't on the conversation for Tyler Linderbaum center he ends up actually going to Las Vegas Raiders
Alante Taylor goes to the Tennessee Titans boy I'm off into the Bengals Kenneth Walker the third
goes to the Kansas City Chiefs I know a lot of you liked Kenneth Walker the third I like Kenneth
Walker the third in a vacuum but looking at what this wash man's running back room needed
compared to what he brings I think he brings a better brand of what they already have but he
doesn't bring what they're missing so to me never really saw the fit he ends up the Kansas City
Chiefs Jamel Dean cornerback from the Buccaneers goes to the Pittsburgh Steelers Mike Evans
wider see from Tampa Bay Buccaneers goes to the San Francisco 49ers among some other players out
there that obviously the wash commanders did not sign but there are still some really good targets
out there like Devon Lloyd arguably the number one off-ball linebacker could become a three down
all pro for Dorante Jones's system without him the middle of the defense you're you're just a
little bit if we so know what's happening with Bobby Wagner we you have Jordan Jordan McGee in
there who we have a lot of hope for his potential and all that stuff but we haven't been able to see
him really do it so it's hard to be super confident about what it is outside of just the general
hope and then there's Dre Greenlaw interestingly enough the Denver Broncos shortly before we went
live here on the channel released Dre Greenlaw now there are some predictions already out there
that he's going to go back to San Francisco which will make a lot of sense play next to Fred
Warner Fred Warner the thing about Dre Greenlaw as talented as he is when he's healthy as he has
battled a lot of injury situations but he's also at least in my knowledge never actually run a
defense he's never worn the green dot so he would be new to that situation if the commanders brought
him in that way so I think Devon Lloyd still needs to be the number one target who knows potentially
overnight early in the morning maybe that deal will come through target number two was going to be
Rashid Shaheed Seattle Seahawks White receiver but as we're live here actually coming across the
ticker Rashid Shaheed off the board back to the Seattle Seahawks so we're reports earlier in the
month before for agency that they were negotiating a new deal didn't know if he'll come through in time
it ended up coming through today Monday so Rashid Shaheed off the board Jalen Naylor also off the
board Minnesota Vikings White receiver headed to Vegas Alec Pierce going back to Indianapolis so
as of right now unless I've just missed it which is possible because we've been doing the show
Romeo Dobbs probably sits as the number one target I know Joanne Jennings was still out there
a commander's fan message me said Deami Brown was still out there I love Deami I would love
to see Deami back I don't know if he's your slam dunk number two so maybe like Carl Nell Tate
still in play at number seven in the NFL draft I know Jeremiah Love no running backs added
on Monday Chris Rodriguez junior to my knowledge still has not been tendered his restricted
free agent offer so as of right now you know you're courier cross merits it like bills it and bill
love bill but bill can't be the only dude in the running back room all we'll Smith like looking around
the empty living room right so Jeremiah Love obviously is becoming more and more of a draft target
as the commanders go forward out backs but running backs certainly could be on the list Rashid White
is still out there Travis ETN is off the board along with Kenneth Walker as is Tyler Algier to
wreak woolen sales yaw's cornerback remains on the board so even though a lot of day Taylor is
gone Jalen Watson Jamel Dean to wreak woolen freak athlete six foot a million four two speed very
very just talented player wouldn't necessarily be surprised to see the commanders go after him if they
do then I move him lucky back inside and I mean Robinson is now a backup and he's the what what
did I say 41st ranked annual average value or something like that backup like that's an okay cost
offensive line Elijah Vera Tucker not a center he's a guard but he's probably the best like
remaining into your offensive lineman on the board and of course Chris Paul Chris Paul is still not
been signed at least as far as I know at the time that we went live here on the channel so Chris
Paul potentially could be someone to the wash mares if he's not getting a deal out there certainly
could see him go there tied in as a position that you could also see the wash mares go we didn't see
him go there today on day one Chico Conco is still out there as a likely he's not here and again
I was only Isaiah likely trained in the beginning but as you probably noticed if you're never
there as we are closer and closer to the day I was kind of like let me cool off on Isaiah
likely it was never really in on David and Joku just kind of feels like another zackert so if you're
going to go with another zackert just get zackerts when he's ready to play in the regular season which
you know is a whole other conversation so Chico Conco probably the only tight end on the board to
be quite honest with you that I would be kind of like yeah they got him you know what I mean and like
I said it doesn't really replace Ben's and it had just kind of weaponized the entire room all
together so that is our day one recap washing mares free agency in the books that's going to do
for this episode next time I'm locked on commanders we are going to set the stage for day two of course
