Friday, I guess George May he is with us all George.
Hello, how you doing?
Good, man.
I get, you know, these Fridays are fun because you're set up.
You got sports and some food talk and restaurant talk leading into a weekend.
It's just a good way to set it up.
It is.
It is.
I'm just not feeling so good, you know.
No, what's wrong with you?
I've been eating donuts for the last six hours.
Hi, best episode.
George is on the donut.
He's on the donut.
So what do you call it?
The donut beat.
Yeah, we've got.
Would you have the donut coma?
That's what you got.
We've got a podcast coming up and we're going to do donuts.
You know, our favorite donuts and, you know, just like you guys,
we got to do some show prep.
We just can't go on and just wing it and talk about it.
Oh, that's the excuse.
That's the excuse.
So we've got to re-familiarize ourselves with the donut scene.
And there's a lot of donut places in town.
I just found out.
No, I knew that before.
But so yeah, driving around town,
eating donuts today.
How are you feeling?
Sorry for me yet.
It was, it was, it was rough.
And it's, it was just fine.
I mean, it's, you know, listen to me.
Listen to me complain about my.
I have to eat donuts.
Right, right.
And then I want to eat donuts I had to.
But what does make it worse, though,
is we're going to a fish fry after this.
I think that makes it all better.
Oh, my God.
Talk about comas.
I might not make it through the night.
So kind of what, I mean, what's,
which style of donuts do we all prefer?
Like, I mean, like, fancy versus old school,
right, because there's old school traditional simple.
Those can be amazing.
But then there's fancy with all different kinds of flavors
and toppings and looks and things.
And that's what we're going to talk about.
And I think that that's a really good,
because a lot of people are just, no, I just eat glazed.
And that's all I do.
That's all I've ever done.
And that's all I want to do.
And then there's some people that like all the,
you know, the bacon, caramel, long jams,
and stuff like that's become a thing.
But I'm a pretty basic guy.
But I like, you know, if there's a,
if I have kind of my, my barometer donut is,
is an old-fashioned one.
One that I can like cake or cake.
Okay, so you're old-fashioned cake donut frosting or no?
No, no frosty, just a little glaze on it.
White or chocolate.
Just that, just that, just a sugar glaze.
Just the regular old.
Okay, I got you.
Yeah, just something you can do.
Kind of dunk in your coffee, do that.
But boy, you get, you know, that's, it's a divisive thing.
And I, I had some interesting donuts today.
But I tell you what, one thing that people do need to realize
is that some of these, and I didn't know this,
some of the places that are open from six to noon
are open from six to midnight on Friday and Saturday.
Oh, I bet.
You know, and it makes sense.
But I, I never realized that.
But, uh, and some of them are still do close at noon
as I found when I pulled up, but one o'clock.
Yeah, well, way to go, George.
Yeah, so anyway, it was, uh, it was an interesting day.
But there's, uh, we'll have, we'll have some interesting
factoids about donuts, I think, coming up on this one.
And, um, yeah, right now, uh, uh, the podcast,
we're talking about soups, which was a riot
because the soup podcast broke on the 85 degree day.
This week, whatever, it was Tuesday.
I think it's one of the programs.
Of course, you know, yeah, yeah.
So anyway, it's, again, it's life's tough in the food biz.
But, but, uh, you know, as always,
you need a research assistant for donuts.
I know some people.
Yeah, I mean, including me.
Yeah, three right here.
So you guys are donut folks.
Oh my god, yeah.
We love the donuts on this show.
Oh, I, I, you know, I've been donuts.
I have in my kitchen right now with like one bite.
What are they doing in your kitchen, George?
Set.
Just forget about all of us.
Yeah, sorry.
We're going to give you more data.
Yeah, you know what?
I should, we should have done that.
We should have a little donut taste off.
Listen to me spinning for donuts.
George, can you, can you,
if I ask you, if you went to a particular place,
can you reveal that or would you rather not?
Oh, no, I've, I've, I've been to, I went to several.
Um, because I was going to, for whatever reason,
this conversation has been thinking of John's donuts and too, Lord.
Yeah.
Did you guys did not go there, but it's on my list of places to check out.
And that list is awesome.
Yeah.
And there's, uh, uh, uh, I went to strange donuts.
I went to, um, uh, world's fair donuts.
Okay.
I went to, uh, uh, old town donuts.
Um, don't, don't drive in.
You know what?
That's a really, that was a really good donut shop.
Is a really good donut shop.
They've got a couple speaking of cake donuts.
They've got about 10, if you're a cake donut fan,
that's your spot, because they've got them in about 10 different varieties.
But it's interesting because their cake donuts aren't that,
and this is, this is the other thing.
They're not that big.
They're, they're not bite size, but they're like two bites or three bites.
Well, bigger than that, but they're, they're the right size.
So like all the right size, because I had some today,
some cake donuts that were massive, and I could only eat one.
I, you know, I like to spread it around.
Like, give me a couple of, I don't want to eat just one donut.
I got you, you need to taste multiple flavors.
And yeah, yeah.
Well, you know, yeah, put them in the bag and take them home, man.
So this is interesting.
You know, since we're on donuts, it's, um,
down at Vincent Van Donut in, uh, in the Grove, uh,
they closed, uh, in January.
It kind of a mysterious, uh, just, just decided it was time to close for a moment.
And they reopened a, uh, a week ago.
And the owner gets back on social media and explains the reason that he closed
and the reason that he opened back up.
And I, it brought tears to my eyes because the guy had tried to take his online.
Oh, wow.
And he did it in October, it, you know, in a car, just beat the heck out of himself,
lived and, uh, he, he goes, you know, in on social media through a couple of videos.
And he said, you know, this is going to be rough for some people.
I'm telling you this right now, don't, don't listen if, if you're not prepared for this.
Anyway, it was fascinating and inspiring and, you know,
the people that brought him through.
And anyway, a long story short, this guy, uh, is back at Vincent Van Donut.
And he just opened his place.
He said, you know, we're going to be doing things a little bit differently.
But he, you could just tell by listening to him that he had a whole new lease on life.
It was very inspiring, but very, and very, I won't say typical of, of the restaurant industry,
but there's a lot of, uh, underlying themes.
There's a lot of mental illness in, in the restaurant business.
And I guess in, in every business, but I've never seen any stressful business though.
You know, it is.
And, and especially now, you know, and you're there just working day and night.
And, you know, the harder you work, the less money you make and, and things like that.
But wow, I was, um, like I said, I was, I was inspired by, by this guy, um,
his name is Michael McKinley.
And I'll probably see, see him there in the morning for some donuts.
Vincent Van Donuts in, in the, in the Grove.
Well, now I'm going to reach off.
Yeah, very cool.
That's, yeah, I'll probably see you guys.
George, the only thing that this segment sucks about is that every time we're done,
I'm like, they're ready to eat then.
And I got to wait like an hour and a half.
But you're always snacking on those.
That's how it goes.
If you're a power, yeah, see you've got one right there.
Yeah.
You and Cheryl should do a power bar.
Yeah, you do a protein bar episode.
I'll give you all the ones to be interested to hear you guys' take on that.
You'd be the guest host for that one for sure.
And we just sit back and put our feet on all kinds of wine.
You up and let you go.
There's all kinds of them.
It's all about your taste.
But also some have less bad stuff in them and others.
You know, like, they're, yeah, I know.
I mean, and you read some of that stuff and it's pretty, pretty shocking.
The stuff you think is the ones you think are the best or not.
Not always.
I mean, when I was looking for the ones I wanted to get, like this one that I have today,
I'm not going to name the brand because I'm not trying to out the company.
This is kind of like B level.
It's not the best one, but it tastes good.
Yeah.
And then the ones I had, most of the ones I have are the ones that rate really well,
with like fitness magazines and people that's, you know, that care a lot about it.
I know Martha Stewart was talking about a particular bar
that was very, very popular.
And she said, there's no, you know, there's no way I'd eat this bar.
And she basically dissed them.
And that was the end of her endorsement for, for them.
She was endorsing them while she was thinking about it.
I got you thinking about it and said, no, sorry.
This is the brand that I would think comes to my head.
Well, I'm not saying it on the air.
We can't say, but we'll talk about it out there.
Yeah.
All right.
Mostly because like, it doesn't mean I know anything.
You know, this is not an area of expertise.
It's just something I do, right?
I just eat protein bars.
It's not like I've studied it that hard.
I listen to other people who have.
And what's in the, what's in the quick trip?
So what do you want?
That right now is a refill.
Like that started off as diet due,
but it's been gatorade for the last few hours.
All right.
I switched to gatorade usually like one, 32 o'clock.
Just a picture of health.
No, that's not really.
I don't think I'd go quite that far, brother.
Supposed to donut George sitting at the next table.
You can see me, right?
No, not exactly, not Mr. Slim.
No, not saying, I don't know.
But you know, you try to, because I will eat the donuts too.
That's kind of the point, right?
You know, I mean, those, those things are,
but that's where you have to kind of like, okay,
I'm going to put, make a time to eat the donuts
and suppose to it's just a there at all the time in my house.
Yeah, I'm not a super, I mean, because I love,
I can't think of, I don't know about you guys,
Rachel and Andrew, but I can't think of many foods.
I like more than donuts.
See, and I'm, I guess I'm okay with them.
I'm about, I'm like a muffler or a stoner.
Okay, because they're like near the mount top for me.
Yeah, well, here we go.
How about pancakes?
We have a new pancake joint opening up.
It's not a new one.
It's an old one.
Uncle Bills is going to after a year's worth of renovation.
Everybody's just, you know, it's a prominent spot on King's Highway.
And it's like, it got the sign.
And the sign's been up for a while.
Okay, what do you know?
It wasn't going to happen.
And finally, finally, finally, we were supposed to go in there
and take pictures a couple of weeks ago.
No, we're not ready yet.
It's not, you know, we were just, it was like,
oh, hurry up and wait kind of thing.
And so they did a soft opening this week.
They were going to do two soft openings
and then decide what they were going to do.
Because I think they were having just like most folks
still trying to staff the place.
And I think by, by maybe having a soft opening or two,
it kind of alerts the people that are looking for jobs.
Hey, you know, you could work at Uncle Bills if you wanted to.
But they had one soft opening day.
And the next day, their next soft opening,
they had plumbing issues and had to not open.
So they were open one day, trying to figure out what to do.
They finally decided today that they're going to open next Monday.
Monday for breakfast and lunch.
Monday through Friday, they're not going to open this weekend.
They're not going to open next weekend.
That's how they're going to do it.
And I think that's soft launch and a soft launch
and purposefully soft launch and really try to do it on the down low
so they can get some practice in.
But oh my gosh, the place looks beautiful.
They really did an outstanding job restoring the, you know, the feel.
Did you see some of those pictures?
I'm looking at the article on sheelmag.com right now.
And it's like they were able to keep the original ambiance.
But everything is just so much cleaner and brighter.
Yeah, yeah, it looks really, really good.
Well, and I dug up a before picture too that I put in there
that really shows you what it looked like.
That's really, because if you don't see that,
you know, yeah, it looks nice,
but you don't remember what it looked like before.
Not that it was, you know, horrible, but it was dated.
And it was, you know, it needed to be fresh and dope.
And that's exactly what they did to it.
And you can see the, you know, the different items
that were added.
They've got these two big chandeliers
that they got from, from Great Britain
that just look kind of like the logic kind of chandeliers.
And they got some beautiful tile from Morocco
that they put around the fireplace.
And, you know, I looked before I go to that tile was okay before,
but this is really nice.
Anyway, they've, they've just, like you said,
they've, everything's just been spiffed up and shined up.
And, you know, here we go again.
It's 60 years old and there's now 60 years young, you know,
it's going to be, it's going to be, it'll be back.
Now, will it be back 24 hours?
It probably not.
They would love to see something like that.
But initially, I think it's going to be breakfast and lunch.
You just, you just don't know with these things.
And, but boy, that was, that's what everybody remembers
as the late nights at Uncle Bill's, you know.
Well, maybe, maybe if it works, you go back.
Yeah.
And the guys that did it,
these guys Ivan and Bertoe Garcia, Garcia properties, you know,
they did the Golden Hoosier down there.
They did Buds, Pizza and Beer.
And they are just single-handedly reviving
that section of South King's Highway.
And this Uncle Bill's thing just fell right into their plans.
And they just, they're having a ball doing it.
And they said, you know, we took our time and spent some money.
And we're really happy with the results.
So, cheers to Uncle Bill's.
George, have a good weekend.
Enjoy those donuts.
Yeah.

I'm rolling along on a Friday here on DGS.
Dave, we'll be back on Monday.
We've got potential for a little rain
at the beginning of the Cardinals game today.
They're supposed to start just after five o'clock
but apparently it's raining right now
according to my buddy Tom Ackerman
who just let us know that.
But I looked at the forecast down there
and it's supposed to clear up by like
6.36, 45 Eastern time.
Let's get Dave Murray back up.
So 5.35, 45 are time.
So we'll see.
I don't know exactly what the play is.
We'll find out between now and 455 when we wrap it up.
That's the best I can do for you.
Well, just have to wait.
We just have to go from there.
That is one of the things, guys, that I mean,
as a sports person when you're covering,
I should say sports was a baseball person
because there are no rain outs and hockey.
There are no rain outs and basketball, right?
There are no rain outs and football.
It doesn't happen.
Even in the biggest blizzard,
football is going to be played.
But when you're a baseball,
when you're covering a baseball team,
and especially when you're in the Matt Polly spot
where your day to day is entirely
about the baseball team's schedule,
there's nothing worse than rain delays.
Think about things like that that would come up,
that would just make your work day three or four hours longer,
just randomly out of the blue.
Yeah.
And how happy you'd be about.
Now, granted, you're sitting at a ballpark,
but during rain delays, it's so cool.
Well, last year opening day, we had a rain day,
didn't we?
And I mean, it put a damper on things.
I mean, once things got started,
it's like, well, once things get started,
it's like, you forget all about it.
But I remember sitting there at the end with you and Dave
being like, so we're like,
we're going to play some baseball.
It's not great.
We had a mid one.
I don't remember what year it was.
It might have been 2013.
That was the last year I did the Cardinals
pre and post before coming back to Kamileks in 2020.
But we had one game, I think rain,
rain happened in the game with like two innings left.
And we did rain delay, theater, rain delay,
coverage for like five and a half hours.
And they resumed the game at,
I think it was three in the morning.
Oh, my goodness.
Yeah, that's pretty great.
Hopefully that does not happen tonight.
No.
