GIANTS POSTCAST: Bryce Eldridge STAYS RED HOT in Giants Series Win Over Cardinals

And tonight, the San Francisco Giants continue to get incredible production from their 21-year-old rookie, Bryce Eldridge, and they rode his hot streak to a two-to-one win today over the St. Louis Cardinals. Eldridge cracked a first inning home run and Christian cost followed it up with a solo shot of his own in the second inning.

1:01Christian cost having a hell of a month of September by the way. Landon Rube also has been very good lately for the Giants and continued his recent success. He struggled with this command of times today, but still gave the Giants six innings of shut out ball, marking his third consecutive outing, holding his opponents to one run or less. With the win today, the San Francisco Giants take the series from the St. Louis Cardinals as they continue to play their best brand of baseball that they have all season long. 2:08Because this kid continues to be the biggest bright spot in San Francisco and he continues to be, I mean, I kind of feel like the OB-1 can, OB-1 can OB comparison doesn't quite fit. Because OB-1 was like the old guy, right? Like he's almost like the Luke Skywalker and Raffys, the OB-1 can OB. But I feel like the help us Bryce Eldridge, you're our only hope fits in very well right now with the way this guy looks. Because man, he really is the hope for the future of this organization. And hope is not a strategy, hope is not a plan. But man, Bryce Eldridge looks to be, I mean, maybe we should use a word other than hope. Because I think that this kid, by every metric, by every test, the eye test, the measurable, like anybody with a brain that watches this guy play baseball can tell you, this kid is damn good. And this kid is correcting issues with his swing in real time. I mean, we saw him kind of hit the wall a little bit in the month of July.

3:10He had a not so great month in July. I mean, he was slumping a little bit. He was batting what? Just 207 in the month of July. But then the calendar turned to August. And he was batting 297. And since then, he's batting around 300. Even now, still, since the month of August. So really, it's been really impressive to watch this guy. I mean, over his last 20 games, Bryce is batting 342, 25 hits in those 20 games. Man, that's incredible. Three home runs. 18 ribbies in those 20 games and eight runs scored. What more do you want from this kid? He has shown you a whole hell of a lot at the dish. And he continues to show you that he can have power to all fields. Like Oracle Park doesn't matter. Like Bryce is a legit enough hitter that playing at Oracle Park doesn't really matter. Like you can talk about how, you know, hitters don't want to come play here because the dimensions and this thing, the other thing, the wind, the conditions, the fog, all that kind of stuff just isn't conducive to hitting a whole lot of home runs.

4:15Well, you know, Barry bonds had a thing or two to say about that. And I think Bryce eldridge, although I don't think he's going to be Barry bonds because nobody will ever be Barry bonds. I think Bryce eldridge is the same kind of hitter who his power plays at any major league baseball park. It does not matter if he is at Oracle Park. It does not matter if he is at Fenway Park. It doesn't matter where he is. He definitely doesn't need the help of a short porch like they got over in Yaki Stadium, that baby ballpark over there in the Bronx. You don't need help for Bryce eldridge. I mean, you saw it today, man. I mean, he can use that whole field and in that first inning, really impressive at that by Bryce eldridge when he knocked his 16th home run of the season into the left field bleachers left center field bleachers. But still going up Otako 389 feet 102.5 miles an hour off the bat. And man, that was a pitch that was high in a way. It was so high it was out of the strike zone. And Bryce eldridge was still able to drive that pitch.

5:16Did a great job of not getting too far underneath that ball. And man, he unloaded on that thing was able to get the arms extended and you saw the type of power that he has when he wants to go the other way. And Bryce eldridge said just as much when he was talking to the guys on the NBC post game, he said that, excuse me, earlier in this season, especially in the month of July that he was trying to pull the ball a lot that he was really trying to look for that power to right field. And well, I'm sure he's got a lot of power there. And Bryce eldridge is one of those guys who he's so big and strong. You don't need him to swing maximum effort to hit a home run, right? Like this guy can hit the ball 400 yards or 400 feet with just a flick of the wrist. Like he got football on the mind, man, and I'm talking about yards and stuff. We got the 49ers starting up tomorrow. Man, football is on the brain heavy, especially with the way this giant season has gone, man. But ultimately the the giants, man, I really am excited about how Bryce eldridge has been playing. This guy has been the biggest bright spot for the giants. And I really do think that this guy not only profiles is like a 30 home run 100 RBI guy.

6:20I'm going to go ahead and say that this guy is going to be around 40 home runs every year when he's in his prime. I mean, I don't know how he can't be the batting average is also very impressive to me. The way that this guy uses the entire field, it sounds me that Bryce isn't just going to be a power guy. He's going to be a batting average guy throughout his career too. Speed will never be there. That's one thing that we're never going to get with Bryce. He's not ever going to be a true five tool player because he doesn't have the speed. But hey, he can hit the hell out of the ball. And I think the way that he he profiles offensively more than makes up for any speed deficiencies. This guy might have you don't have to run too fast when he hit the ball over the fence. You can take as long as you want running around those bases. So Bryce eldridge doing what he does best today, hitting the ball over the fence is 16th home run of the season. And it's unfortunate that this rookie campaign is coming in a year when you got Spencer steer out there in a or a south stew or excuse me, south stew. I'm mixing up my reds first basements and when you got south stewed out there in Cincinnati having a hell of a year.

7:24And man, Stewie is you saw him earlier this year. I guess the Giants he was really, really good hitting a bunch of home runs then. And he's done that all season long for the red. But he's got to be in a place in a year where he has had a hell of a year gets overshadowed just a little bit by south stewart. But make no mistake there's nothing to be disappointed in or you know, comparison is the thief of joy. Like you don't want to sit here and compare Bryce eldridge's rookie season to south stewart because they're two different guys. There are two different paths. Bryce eldridge has got to go his own way, man. And that's exactly what he's been doing this season with the Giants. He said also post game one thing that I thought was really interesting about what he said is he talked about how he feels like he's grown more as a person this year than in any other year of his life. And for a 21 year old kid to be talking about something like that like obviously he's going to have a lot of growing opportunities, especially mentally as a 21 year old playing major league baseball. He's got a lot of life to live the kids 21.

8:24But for him to be aware like self aware in this type of a way, it shows you the kind of brain that he's got and all these tops here athletes like the best of the best right. What separates the greats from the goods is the brain like the goods have just as good of skills usually as the greats do right. The greats can just tap into that a little bit more often and the greats like Barry bonds like like Willie McCubby like Willie May is like so many others that we've had. Here in San Francisco, you know Tim Lince come Matt Kane must or pose you all the guys on the wall behind me if you're watching on YouTube all these guys. What's I mean yeah they were all you know insanely gifted athletes and all that and so is Bryce but so are a lot of guys and major league baseball that never quite ascend to that level and what separates them like I said is the mental acuity that they have for the game. It just the the way that they're able to slow things down and process stuff. It's it's all the mental stuff that separates those guys and Bryce seems like a guy who just really has his mental in order.

9:30He seems like a guy who just sees the game in a way that like a 10 year vet would in this guy is 21 years old. That might be the thing I'm most excited about with this kid more than any other physical attribute he has more than his power more than that that ability to drive the ball to the opposite field gap or over the fence the other way. Bryce eldridge is mental acuity for the game of baseball and just for life in general is going to take him very very very far and allow him to access all of the ability that he has in a way that is going to make him special in major league baseball. I'm so excited to watch this kid's career unfold in a giant's uniform and it's going to be pretty sweet man to watch him and Rafi have this one to combo in the lineup for years to come. So last night when Rafi got the the intentional based on balls in in extra innings that he kind of gave Bryce a little nod and basically told him you know, let's go, you know time for you to step up buddy and he did just in Bryce delivered in that moment gave you the the game time hit in that 10th inning.

10:36So I mean, this has been really fun to watch Rafi and Bryce the symbiosis of these two both getting synced up at the same time when they're both hitting while they're both getting better pitches to hit and it's a it's like a force multiplier right like both of these guys aren't just playing like one one of them plays well it's not just a benefit for the team from just the sheer numbers that they produce we know that but it makes the other guy also much much much more effective and much better. One last thing I'll say about Bryce before we get some other points from today's game man did he does he look like he really knows what his plan is when he gets up to the plate. This guy is looking for certain pitches hunting specific pitches and when he gets them he is not missing them when Bryce all season long has been really really good at hunting pitches when he gets ahead in the count but tonight I mean you see him hit that home run on a on a two strike count it was a good one and he put that one over the fence went the opposite way to you know protected the zone that was a pitch that was far too close to take even though it was a ball in this season I mean in two two counts.

11:45Bryce is batting 167 so like not super great right this is just his his first home run of their exactly excuse me it's third home run of the season in a two two count so this is something that has been improving as the year has gone along and this is just the latest evidence of it one really really good thing to know when Bryce is ahead in counts man he usually absolutely rushes I mean when he's up to one he's batting 474 when he's up to one when he's up 3 to one he's batting 600 and the slug is almost a 2000 it's ridiculous so when this guy gets ahead in counts and he's looking for what's coming and he kind of gets an idea like you're coming with the heater now and he is sitting that looking dead red you see the production one Bryce gets the pitch he's looking for man this guy can absolutely kill the ball and that is I think only going to get better right like he's doing this is rookie year it's one thing to continue to to remind yourself it's kids 21 years old right by the time he's 24 he's gonna have so much big league experience and he's still going to be you know entering his physical prime I am juiced absolutely juiced for what is to come with Bryce Eldridge we got to take a quick break here on the other side one more time left

I'm your host Eric, triple E, Engle. And today the Giants get a two to one win over the Cardinals. And man, this is good for a lot of different reasons, right? Like the Giants, like pull back, look big picture. This season, the Giants, E worst team, and major league baseball and one run game. So you're going to have to go back to the first round of the season to be able to get in the ball. Usually baseball and one run games they have been absolutely atrocious in these situations, which shouldn't really come much of a surprise. I mean, the Giants have been, you know, not very good in the

15:02bullpen department this season. So it's not super surprising that the Giants, you know, in one run games are just 13 and 25 coming into tonight. Well, now you get to 14 and 25. So, I mean, it still lipstick on a pig a little bit. You know, you can only go one way right now, really, if you're the Giants and that's up as far as the bullpen goes in these one run game situations. And today, even though the Giants offense only got you those two runs, it was enough. And we talked a lot about that price eldridge first in a home run. I don't want to leave out our guy, Christian Coss. He had a second in a home run. His fourth home run of the season in his third in the last couple of weeks, Christian Coss has been really, really, really hot lately. He's got three home runs now in the month of September. He's betting over 280. I mean, he's his OPS is over 850. I mean, he has been really good for the Giants. And I mean, offensively, we know Christian Coss is not going to be a guy who you can rely on long term, right?

16:02That's not who he is. He's a guy who is a defensive, you know, wild card like you can play him anywhere you want. And he's generally pretty good in out to buy beverage. I mean, it's, it's, he's in the 83rd percentile and major league baseball, which is a whole hell of a lot better than you were getting from Willie abdomens that shortstop for a long time. And I don't think it's really that much of a coincidence that when you see a guy who can play, you know, one of the most premium defensive positions in the game at a high level that you see this Giants team start to look more cohesive on defense as a whole. I mean, again, talk about the force pliers on off, force multipliers on offense with Rafi and Bryce Eldridge. Christian Coss kind of showing you that you can kind of have the same experience on defense when you got a really good shortstop. It's a force multiplier for the rest of your defense. The rest of your defense gets better when you have a good shortstop. Christian Coss, I mean, I'm not saying that he should play every day

17:02over Willie Adamus that's certainly not what I'm saying, but could you just imagine if Willie Adamus had like, you know, even close to the defensive ability that a Christian costed in addition to what he does offensively. I mean, you would actually be a pretty fun player at that point, right? Like my main issue with Willie, yeah, the batting average is frustrating and you want him to be more consistent and you want him to hit those big home runs in bigger moments. But really my issue with Willie has been the defense, man. If he was even just a league average defensive shortstop, I wouldn't have too much of a bone to pick with him. I mean, it wouldn't be like I'm, you know, shouting from the mountain tops that Willie should win MVP or something, but man, I would get off his back if he would play some defense like we saw from Christian Coss. They're in the last inning of this game. He got a gnarly 100 plus mile an hour ground ball out on the short hop that came up high and stabbed it on the backhand and came across the field and threw the runner out. And you just love to see some stuff like that from your shortstop.

18:04It's smooth. It looks nice. And man, that is what a big league defensive shortstop looks like. Willie Adama sometimes doesn't quite look like that to me. So we got to give Christian Coss a shout out tonight for his great game both at the dish and in the field. But before we finish up today's show, we got to talk a little bit about Landon Rube because my guy Landon Rube absolutely shoved tonight. And he, I mean, six innings, no runs. That's awesome. And it's kind of weird that he was able to have the night that he did on the mound. The Cardinals kind of helped him out a lot with how many pitches they wanted to chase and from from from Rube tonight. He only threw 81 pitches in those six innings. 47 of them for strikes. But man, he just at times you would completely lose his command. He walked four guys in tonight's game. He only gave up two hits. It's it's the stuff was there. Obviously the stuff was good from Landon Rube tonight. And this was walking guys. And again, this is the same thing we've talked about in like every Landon group start

19:04since the second half of the season started is when this guy has his control, he's pretty good. Like he is the stuff plays. He gets a lot of ground balls. He's one of the best pitchers in baseball at getting ground balls and soft contact. I mean, 50% of the time he's getting a ground ball. And I mean, he's he's very, very, very good at dodging that hard hit. And he's the right as a as a starting pitcher. So you really like to see what Landon Rube has done in these last three games. I mean, he has been very, very, very effective. Again, just just to emphasize the hard hit thing, only 87.9 average exit Velo tonight for Landon Rube. That's going to generate you a lot of outs, especially if that's on the ground. But for Landon Rube, this was a guy who really struggled to win games after the month of May. I mean, he did not win a game for over two months. I mean, Landon Rube did not win a game in the month of in the month of May. He didn't win a game in the month of July. A month of June, he won two games in the month of July. And then only it took him until the last week of August to win another game.

20:07Man, I mean, since then since that start against Arizona, he only gave up one run there in his five innings. Then gave up one run in five innings against the pirates. And today he gives up zero in six against the Cardinals. So Landon Rube definitely has some stuff to work on. The command it needs to get. He needs to figure that out. But it's clear that he's definitely a guy who when he's right up there, he's pretty effective. So very interested to see what this guy does over the offseason. If he changes anything mechanically, because I think he's even said that he's been tinkering with his mechanics in the second half of the season, trying to get his his command under control. So we'll see how that improves as time goes on. But today for the Giants, a nice solid two to one win. And man, we didn't even really have time to get to that ninth inning. But man, they took a two run lead into that ninth and things got a little dicey there for Kudal. But he was able to secure the save and get out of the jam despite having the the tying run on second base.

21:11I mean, it wasn't clean. It wasn't pretty. But you got the save. You got the win. Ultimately, you go home happy. And you win the series without waiting for the rubber match, which is key because the Giants have dropped seven consecutive rubber matches. So you're happy that they won the game tonight and they don't have to go into tomorrow, hoping that they win the game three. And you know, out there at Oracle Park during the daytime, which I'm sure is going to be a really nice day out at the yard. Not too many Wednesday day games left on the calendar. It's one of the last ones this year. So, you know, if you're out at the yard, enjoy it. We don't have too many more of these ones left.
