The San Francisco Giants picked up right where they left off last season, with a lackluster offensive performance during a Logan Webb start and bad defense, ultimately leading to a 7-0 loss to the New York Yankees. It looked like the San Francisco Giants had something cooking early, but a squandered offensive opportunity in the bottom of the first ended up leading to a five-run top of the second for the New York Yankees. Offensively, the Giants were 0-5 with runners in scoring position tonight.

This is the Giants Postcast, your instant game reaction for the San Francisco Giants,
part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
Yo, what's up everyone, and welcome back to the Lockdown Giants Postcast.
I'm your host, Eric Triple E Engle, and it has been a minute since I've seen all of you
guys.
Welcome to the show, and appreciate you guys all for tuning in.
You may know me as the former producer for the Murphy Mac morning show on KMBR, or maybe
from some of these other Lockdown shows that I do, including Lockdown 49ers, squad shows
with Dwayne Borden.
But hey, it is opening night in Major League Baseball, and we have waited all winter long
for this day.
It's the best day in all of sports.
The first MLB game of the season in this year, it's Giants Yankees at the best ballpark
in all the land.
It after a beautiful opening ceremony full of pop and circumstance for a Christchurch
and flyovers, taxis and cable cars, things quickly went sideways for Logan Webb and the
Giants.
The Yankees played in five runs in the second inning and never looked back, winning
this one, seven to zero, and spoiling the Giants' grand opening of the 2026 MLB season.
We'll break it all down.
But first, I want to thank all of you for watching us on the Lockdown Giants YouTube channel.
Please, please, please, if you aren't already subscribed, hit that subscribe button right
now.
Thanks also for listening on the Lockdown Giants podcast feed.
However, you're tuning in, we appreciate it.
Make sure to check out the Lockdown Giants daily show for more in-depth coverage.
My guy, Alan Stiles, does a great job.
And we're going to make sure that we get Alan on the show pretty soon.
We wanted to do that last season, but just didn't work out timing wise.
We will make sure to get Alan on the show, do a little crossover for you guys pretty
soon here.
But, man, let's get right to it.
Today's turning point and where things went wrong for the Giants.
Time to reveal where the game was once or lost.
It's the turning point.
In this one, I mean early, early on for the Giants, things started to go bad quick.
After a very, very solid first inning where Webb struck out Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge
and got out of that inning, one, two, three, no problem, the Giants.
Come up in the bottom of the first.
Get runners at first and third with one out and stop me if you have heard this before.
But the Giants failed to score that runner from third base.
You had a Willie Adama strike out and then a Juhu Lee ground out.
And this was after Matt Chapman nearly grounded into a double play to end the inning before
they even had that opportunity.
It just wasn't great.
And Luis Arise did set the table with the walk in his first at bat.
The only Giants to reach base safely more than once in today's game.
You only have three hits for the Giants, not a lot of offense and this is familiar.
This feels like I'm watching last year's team who's going out there and giving no run
support to Logan Webb, who's going out there and making bad plays on defense and compounding
problems and extending innings for other teams.
And you cannot do that to one of the most dangerous lineups in all of baseball.
The Yankees who are favored to win the American League this year and had a great offense last
year, essentially just running back the same team in men in the top of the second after
the Giants failed to score in that bottom of the first.
You really saw why this team is favored to win the American League.
I mean, first two batters of the inning reach after Stanton line drive single.
You just, I mean, rope and false all day.
Giancarlo Stanton just line drive machine.
Jazz Chisholm gets hit by a pitch.
Caballero then base hit score Stanton.
And this is where things start to get sideways for the Giants because on this ball that was
hit to center field and then relate to the relay throw was cut off by Adamus to third
base.
They had no play at third, no play at home, but they had Caballero dead to rights at second
base.
I mean, this guy wasn't even halfway between first base and second base when Willie
Adamus gets the ball.
And he makes an awful throw to second base who'd have been a lot worse.
But it hits Caballero's leg and stays in the infield almost all the way into right field
if it wasn't for Caballero's left cleat on the play.
And man, it allows Caballero to reach second base safely.
It extends the inning.
Then a base hit clears the bases.
The Yankees take a three nothing weed six consecutive batters reach safely in the inning.
Trent Grisham ends up having a big triple in the inning.
The sports two more before you know, it's five nothing Yankees in the second inning.
And I'll tell you what, man, right from the rip, I don't want to just start the season
on a bad note.
I know we got 161 more games to play.
Man, did it feel like an insurmountable deficit for the Giants?
Like I know that I know that things can improve me.
There's a long, long, long baseball season.
Don't get me wrong, I understand.
But it's really frustrating as a Giants fan to sit there and watch this game and knowing
this team's history and their issues with runners in scoring position.
They're lack of run support for Logan Webb that this has been a year's long problem
at this point.
This isn't just bad taste left over from last year.
This is bad taste left over from the last nearly decade of Giants baseball.
And it looked the same to me tonight.
It did not look much different.
I know that we got Tony Vittello and we got Luis Arise and kind of the Harrison Bader,
like the remade batting order.
It feels nice.
I want to be excited.
But a goose egg for Logan Webb in run support on opening night when you're playing the Yankees
and you are at the at the epicenter of Major League Baseball with all eyes on you.
National broadcast game if you consider the Netflix broadcast and national broadcast.
But it's the Giants failing in these big moments, failing to support their superstar and
shrinking in these clutch moments over and over and over again.
This is what this team has done.
This is their calling card at this point.
The Giants shrink when the moment is at its biggest and that was on full display tonight
and it's high.
Again, I know it's one game, but it's hard not to know the history of this team, the recent
history of this team and look at this any differently other than I'm a little concerned.
And again, I'm excited for the baseball season.
I am hyped that we have baseball back opening day itself.
We can get into that in a little bit.
That was phenomenal, excellent, excellent, excellent.
But it's just been a frustrating, frustrating, I don't know, afternoon as a Giants fan
and seeing the Giants just kind of roll over and die.
I mean, later on in the game, you had a couple more runs score.
Giancarlo Stanton drives a single in the fifth inning to score Cody Belinger and Jazz
Chisholm then grounded into a force out that scored another run.
And again, it's just the Giants lack of opportunities, lack of just lack of really doing
much of anything on offense that was really, really, really frustrating to watch today.
I mean, this team has continuously floundered in these situations and you didn't have very
many hits after that first inning rally.
Like the Giants, they went over five with runners in scoring position tonight.
It's not just the offer, it's that they didn't have a lot of opportunity and yeah, Web was
not at his best on the KMBR broadcast.
I saw someone just mentioned this in the chat on the KMBR broadcast.
It was mentioned that Logan Web might have been tipping his pitches, which is something
that we have seen before and I don't think this is going to be a continual problem.
But it did look like the Yankees kind of knew it was coming in that second inning.
I mean, the five innings pitch for Web, not very good.
He gave up nine hits, seven runs, only six earned, one walk and seven strikeouts, one notable
thing tonight that the Giants actually did well.
So they really limited Aaron Judge.
It's the only Yankee player who did not get a hit in tonight's game.
If I told you Aaron Judge was going to go over five with four strikeouts on opening night,
you would probably think that the Giants were going to win that game.
Logan Web had Judge's number, the Giants bullpen had Judge's number.
I do even struck out looking at one point in this one.
The Giants still kind of get it done.
Giants were not able to overcome as everybody else in this Yankees lineup had a hit.
Every other Yankee that stepped to the dish tonight did something productive for them.
And they spread those six RBI's out.
I mean, the most RBI that any one player on this team had tonight was two.
You had offense from all throughout the lineup in the Yankees batting order, one through nine.
And that's not what you had with the Giants at all, complete opposite.
You only had three guys with hits.
Luis Ryes, as we mentioned earlier, Raphael Devers and Elliot Ramos both with hits as well.
And it's just a lackluster lineup.
It doesn't inspire a lot of confidence.
I know a lot of people think that this could be one of the best offensive infields
in all of baseball.
But I need to see it, man.
I need to see the consistency.
I know that Adamus typically starts slow to the season.
We know that.
Chapman, we know that he's streaky as hell.
He's up and down.
He's going to hit 401 month and hit 200 the next.
And we know that Raphael Devers had a hard time getting adjusted to hitting here at Oracle Park.
Well, I haven't seen many of those things rectified.
It still looks like Adamus is going to take forever to get the engine rolling.
It looks like Matt Chapman needs to get some things sorted out and needs to start finding his groove.
And I mean, Raphael, he did have one of the Giants three hits today.
And he was hitting the ball well.
The ball was coming off his bat pretty solid.
The Giants ultimately towards the end of the game.
They were actually hitting some line drives.
They're just going to write at people.
I mean, at Jazz Chisholm caught a line drive off the bat of Matt Chapman.
That was like 106, 107 miles an hour.
I have no idea how the hell Jazz caught it.
They actually popped out of his glove and he had to finish the catch with the bare hand.
So that ball was absolutely smoked.
And there's not a lot you can do about that.
But Giants ultimately, not what you want on opening night,
not what you want to see.
And it's not just that they lost, right?
It's how they lost.
It's the fact that they failed to give Logan Webb run supports.
The fact that this offense looked just completely lifeless, dead in the water.
It's after that first failed attempt to get that runner on third with less than two outs
to score.
And it just seemed to steamroll from there.
It seemed to continue to pile on.
And the Giants just weren't able to get the lid off of this offense.
And that was the problem for the last year, the year prior, the year prior, and so on.
So I'm a little worried about this offense.
Let me know if you are as well.
So the Giants ultimately, they fall in this one 7 to 0 to the Yankees.
We're going to take a quick break on the other side.
We got more to get into.
It's opening day.
And man, I just wanted to get all the Giants bad play stuff out of the way.
So then we can actually just talk about baseball and have a kind of like a good five,
you know, end to the show.
Baseball's back and we can all be happy about that at least.
Even if we can't be happy about the way the Giants played tonight or the way that this
offense performed or Logan Webb's pitching performance, we can still all be happy that
baseball's back, man.
And we have it for the next six or seven months.
So let's rejoice.
That's coming up next here on the Lockdown Giants postcast.

to zero.

Welcome back to the Locked On Giants postcast.
I'm your host Eric Triple E Engle and tonight man did not go the way the Giants wanted
it to go.
70 lost of Yankees and we already got into all the nitty gritty of Logan Webb being ineffective,
didn't hit hard over and over again, maybe tip in some pitches, the Giants offense coming
up short and big situations yet again and hey, the defense even letting them down a little
bit.
So you didn't play well in any of the three phases of the game, but hey, we have a whole
161 other games where we can dive into the Giants shortcomings.
But for today for the rest of the show, we got to talk about just the game coming back
opening night in San Francisco.
I went out to the yard, went out to Oracle Park, a cool little thing that I did for myself
this off season.
I'm your newest San Francisco Giants season ticket holder.
So I will be out there a lot this year and taking it in up in section 304, kind of step
in the nose bleeds a little bit, but in the view box, you know, so it's still a nice
view.
You see me around the yard, come say what's up, it's hard to miss me.
I got all this long hair now and all this all this this giant beard on my face.
So it's I stick out, you know what I mean, come say hi, come say what's up.
But man, it was such a fun time out at the yard and all over that side of town today.
I mean, let's talk about the field.
First of all, for introducing the Yankees, they had a pair of New York City style taxi
cabs, kind of parked right next to each other where the players run out of the out of
the little tunnel that they got right there.
So it was cool to see the Yankees coming out through the taxi cabs, obviously the iconic
mode of transportation in New York.
And for the Giants, you have the Giants players running out of a cable car that they can
wheeled out there onto the field right in front of the Giants dugout.
It was pretty cool to see that.
I thought it was a good vibe and nice little touch.
You also had Bert Kreischer down there yelling and screaming and doing his thing on the field.
I was kind of hard to hear him.
They had their his his my turn way down because he's just in their screaming to the into
the mic kind of like kind of like yours truly screams into the mic sometimes when I get
frustrated about the Giants failing with runners and scoring position, but I digress still
a fun ambiance environment.
And you know, then you had the national anthem, which was great.
You had this crazy like American flag made out of smoke that they did.
It smelled like smoke bombs, you know, like that smell that you get from 4th of July when
when all the kids go out and throw all the little smoke bombs, not like actual fireworks,
but smoke bombs.
And it looks like the American flag that they had was probably created out of like some
similar variety of smoke bombs is pretty cool, man.
And if you haven't seen it, I posted it on my Twitter, a video of it.
So check it out, Eric underscore angle.
And it was it was pretty cool to see that and the, you know, nice, nice quick national anthem
button, tough one.
You love that.
You want to just ride into it, especially on opening night.
And yeah, of course, you had the fly over and you had so much stuff going on with the
Netflix broadcast.
I mean, my God.
Did you see McCubby Cove?
They had like 73 Netflix plots or kayaks out there.
You had a big giant baseball with a bunch of Netflix branding on it.
Yeah, just a Netflix logo floating out there in McCubby Cove.
And man, I mean, they really did a whole lot.
They took over Momo's, man, like the famous Momo's across the street from, from the Oracle
Park.
And usually, you know, I'm going there.
I'm getting a hum baby shot pregame and having a good time.
But it was all just Netflixed out, man.
It was like not even typical Momo's that didn't really sit well with me.
I don't need, I don't need that much Netflix in my life, you know?
But apparently, I did not watch the Netflix broadcast, but apparently they had a hard time
keeping that score bug on the screen.
They kept bringing it off and whenever they were doing interviews, so so Netflix, please,
please, for the love of God, keep the score bug up there.
Let the people know what the count is.
And yeah, James Winston, like running around, he had a thing, like the hand from the
Adam's family deliver in the first pitch, it was kind of a weird thing.
I don't know if I need all of that in my baseball game.
I definitely don't really need James Winston running around being part of the grounds crew
and doing some interviews in the stands.
He went and had a crab sandwich at one point, which I, you know, a big crab sandwich advocate.
But and I love James Winston, I don't know if I need him at the same time.
I don't know if I need the New York Giants back up quarterback at the game.
Like it's just throwing off the vibes.
Get a San Francisco guy, you know?
Like, where's, where's like, I don't know, where's, go, go grab a 49ers quarterback from,
from years past and, and let them come on in.
Like go, go get Mac Jones.
Where's Mac Jones?
What's he doing?
Why isn't he here for the San Francisco Giants opening night?
And, you know, but ultimately, still a very, very, very fun night.
I did see the, the very bonds, incredible story on the Netflix broadcast about how he almost
became a Yankee, but Steinbrenner wanted to sign the contract right then.
And Barry said, no, I'm doing it on my terms and just hung up.
So that was, that was pretty cool.
But ultimately, a big pop and circumstance night that just kind of fell flat,
because the Giants couldn't capitalize on it.
Logan Webb did become the fifth pitcher to make at least five opening day starts
for the Giants and team history.
Joins, a couple of Hall of Famers, Juan Marishall and Carl Hubble also joins Larry Jansen
in Madison Bungardner.
So a pretty solid company there for Webby.
And the five consecutive opening day starts only trails Juan Marishall,
who made six for the longest streak in team history.
So Webby, we'll see if he makes another opening day starts start for the Giants next year.
I assume he will and he will probably own that record.
But still going to be looking for his first opening day when he didn't get one today.
And he hasn't gotten one in any of his four prior opening day starts.
He's O in one with the 391 ERA or was O in one with a 391 ERA coming into this one.
He's now O in two in that ERA will definitely balloon a little bit higher.
But man, O in one, O in two for Webby in his five starts.
What's that tell you?
Tells you he has not got any run support at all in any of these five opening day starts.
So hopefully Logan Webb can get back on track.
Can correct whatever pitch tipping was going on.
And hopefully the the Giants can can can get back on track with their offense and their defense as well.
There's the good news about about Friday.
Remember no game tomorrow the next game of the series is on Friday.
It's a day game and remember good news about that one.
The Giants as a whole, I don't think that they're going to drop the ball in all three phases of the game on Friday.
Hopefully they can improve at least one phase either pitching defense or offense.
Like one of these things has to be a little bit better than what we saw today.
That's all the time that we got for you guys today.
And then same old Giants new year same stuff.
And that's not what we really want to be seeing right now.
So the Giants have some work to do.
We knew that though we knew this team was flawed.
We knew that this team was not going to be world beaters.
We know that they are not as good as some of these other teams in their division,
which seem to be able to spend money.
I like it doesn't exist to just plan monopoly, but with real life baseball.
And the Giants can't do that.
No other team in baseball can do that.
But they got a better squad.
I think this year than they do last year.
And we will see how that pans out over the season.
I do think that they will end up being a playoff team.
I think they're going to be a French playoff team.
I think they will probably win about 84 games, maybe three games right in there.
So there you go.
You got the season predictions on paper.
We got the opening night completed.
We got the first Giants loss of the season.
Hey, 161 and one is still on the table.
We'll see if they can get it started on Friday when they take on the Yankees in game two of this three game set at Oracle Park.
It's all the time that we got for you guys today.
Thanks so much for tuning in and appreciate all of you guys.
All of our every day is the chat was pretty full today.
Appreciate you guys showing up another season.
And here we go with the lockdown Giants postcast will be coming to you live after every game as we always do boring a couple of you know personal days going on assignment days for for tribally.
So we'll see you next time on Friday.
Until then, peace.
