We're talking about Gilmaw Girl season one episode 17.

Oh.

It is called the breakup part two.

Part two.

A reminder last week's episode was not called the breakup or the breakup part one.

But I did at the very end, allude to a breakup.

That's another wasn't one.

That's right.

Yes.

Well, find out.

I'm sure.

This originally aired on March 15th, 2001, and it went a little something like this.

We picked right back up where we left off, where we tells Laura to lie the head to Dean

broke up with me.

And she is like, tell me more.

And she's like, no.

He did it.

And that's what you need to know.

And that's the end of that.

She compiles a box of everything that Dean has seen, liked, smelled, thought of, puts

it in a box and tells Laura lie to get it, get it out of here.

Which Laura lie does?

Get it out of her room and then puts it in the back of the closet just in case.

The next morning, Rory wakes up early.

She wants to get up and add up.

And Laura is like, no, you should have like a wallow day.

You have a wallow day after you have a breakup.

She's like, I don't want a wallow, I want to get going.

They head to Luke's and it becomes clear that everybody in town already knows about the

breakup.

Luke sees Dean trying to come to the diner to get some coffee.

So he meets him outside and fights him to make to make sure that he does not go inside

of the diner.

Classic.

Classic child abuse.

That's a little polonious assault.

We love it.

We love it.

We love it.

We love it.

And Laura and Curtis Rory just hang out with Lane and go have some fun, you two.

Feeling lonely and missing Max.

She goes to try to hang out with Suki, but Suki's busy being on an absolutely miserable

date with Jackson because Jackson is attempting to make her dinner, which is something that

you should never do for Suki.

So she gives in and decides to just go and see Max, nox on the door and apologize.

And apologizes to him and he invites her in.

I'm sure just to talk.

Rory and Lane go to a shielding pod and it doesn't take long for Lane to meet a guy and

start dancing.

Okay, Lane.

Go off, girl.

And Rory begins to notice that old Tristan over there seems sad because of something that's

going up between him and his girlfriend at Max's house.

Those two lovebirds are kissing hard.

They start to discuss where things stand between them.

Turns out nothing has changed.

Turns out, doesn't matter, they go kiss the next thing you know they're in bed.

Oh.

Rory finds Tristan alone at the piano and they talk about their break up, seeing his girlfriend

broke up at the party.

Everybody heard it and she just had a break up.

So they end up talking, they end up kissing Rory and Rory pulls away and starts crying

and runs to leave the party.

And when Lorelai gets home, she sees Rory on the couch crying, ready to wallow and that

was Gilmore Girls, single one into seven, the break up part two.

Lots to get to today.

A whole bunch of stuff to break down.

Let's start with our hot takes, it's where we share how we felt about this episode.

Chad, break up part two.

What do you think?

A lot of ground covered again between this episode and the last one, I happen to like episode

16 better.

I like the flow of that.

I thought there were some kind of silly parts in this episode, like Sookie with the cooking.

I'm not bad.

But here we are.

We finally know exactly what I was assuming happened.

The full breakup after the three months of the break up.

They did.

This is the fallout that the whole town is dealing with.

Let's see what happens the next day.

It was exactly the follow up I wanted.

It's a small town.

It's a big deal.

They make it a townwide issue, which is what you would expect here, although it is kind

of weird.

How is worry going to deal with this?

Everything goes perfectly when she has control.

When she loses control, she's learning not always perfect for her.

She wakes up right and early.

She tries to stay busy.

They try to avoid things.

She gets it.

She's kind of spiraling.

She's heartbroken.

I mean, three months with Dean.

I get it.

That's a lot for a teenager, new territory for her.

But the big thing here that I love was the new development.

I've been hearing team Dean.

I've been hearing team Tristan.

You have as well, Dan.

We finally get some Tristan worry chemistry going.

It's really fun.

It's really fun.

And more than just signed.

They kiss big ones.

They kiss big ones.

Tristan's been broken up for three minutes, and they are kissing by the piano, which is

crazy.

It's like a follower.

I don't know.

Just skip the wallow stage.

You know what I mean?

She's not ready.

But Tristan's like, whatever I'm ready.

I'm good.

He's already forgot the other girl's name.

Then the felonious assault we referenced earlier, the perfect comedic contrast.

Yeah.

There we go.

Snark.

He plays bass for them.

Yeah.

He does.

He's good.

So Luke and Dean.

Their scrap was funny.

I thought Luke could have taken them 100%.

He was going all the way.

He wasn't going to 100.

He went hard enough to go get thrown in jail, though.

That was wild.

But that was fun.

And when they call you, they're sitting in the diner, Rory and Lorelai, and you so badly

want them to see them scrapping out the window.

Yeah.

You're like, look, look to your right.

And they finally do.

They run out.

Lorelai grabs her coat, which I don't know why, but you know, that's his calls out there.

So that was very cool.

Then you see Rory in her room.

There's just a lot going on.

That was very real.

She's kind of ruminating on this self-blame.

It's very relatable.

It's kind of, you know, really gets into her, her head, a couple quick more notes.

Finally, I get it with Luke.

Luke, Luke is my note because he was very impressive how he has Rory's back when he finds

out.

He's like, I'll make her the pancakes.

I'll give her strawberries.

He really cared about Rory and Lorelai, which I see him as standoff as so far.

So I am starting to get where the Luke stuff is.

Good parenting by Lorelai.

Oh, and then sleep feels.

We're all parents here.

We've all been woken up on early on weekend mornings about it.

You tell me about it every day of my life.

Yeah.

That was a painfully relatable.

So there we go.

Fun episode.

Yeah.

It's a good episode.

I like this episode a lot.

The, you know, it's tough because I like Max as a person, right?

And as a character clearly, clearly not what should be happening, right?

It's, it was fascinating watching this episode and then you even think back to last week's

episode where, you know, at the end of it, she was going to go call Max and then was interrupted

by Rory coming in like she, and then like in this episode, looking for any reason not to

go to Max's house, like trying to be proactive, like, I'll go hang out with Suki, you know,

Suki's busy, like doing these things and then eventually just giving in to the thing

that she wants, but she knows that she shouldn't.

And then like, you know, you have Rory over there at the party and Lane's having fun.

We hear outcast, which loves that.

And so that made me happy.

But that old party thing and then like Tristan, who she's like, you know, not wanting anything

to do with Tristan, but also like her mom kind of can't help herself in that moment.

Like finds herself being pulled to the thing that she knows that she shouldn't.

And so, I think it was a really great episode, Dan's probably going to like it, no parents

in this episode, not a richer Emily to be found, a lot of great character development

in this episode.

It's a big fan.

Dan.

I like 16 more than this one.

A good deal.

I think this episode ends in a really good place.

Like I like the end of this episode where it's like, I finally have broken down the wall

to really let my mom wallow with me and be, you know, to kind of unfortunately more

and fully celebrate the end of this relationship or so it seems at this point, right?

To get there, just a lot of contrivances that I don't think, I just think the show's

better than like the episode before this while it did include the parents.

It also included a high school boy overdoing it for an anniversary and then subsequently

losing his relationship because he said, I love you all very relatable, all very like,

I could see all of this happening and all of that.

That'll whole episode really made sense.

Right from the time they wake up on a Saturday morning, the episode just has a lot of things

you have to buy that seem just too quirky and didn't work for me from some stuff we'll

talk about in the way.

What the fact that the whole town, I know it's a small town, either Dean or Rory had to

tell someone about breaking up and neither of them told anyone.

And so I don't that the like Laura.

I was doing that.

Yeah.

Yeah.

The Luke Dean fight.

Just like this is so ridiculous, like you wouldn't fight a child.

So like a lot of this stuff or like, you know, the selective actions of Rory when it comes

to avoiding Dean, it just wasn't the way I would have unpacked the story with these characters.

But it ends really well.

I think that Laura like going to the closet and getting on her box of memories, really

good stuff, her saving those memories, even the Rory's told to throw them out.

I think that hopefully, if I know this show as well as I hope I do, we'll pay off big.

The Max Medina, the other thing, that's the other, I'm sorry, I got it side-trade.

The other reason this isn't my favorite episode is because I don't, the best Gilmore Girls

to me is not the overt parallel storyline.

I get it.

We all get it.

You can ride it.

We get it.

We understand.

We've seen it.

Laura has two men interested in her, Rory's got two men interested.

She went to the one she shouldn't have gone to at that moment and kissed him.

I was three minutes left at this episode, I knew she, I needed to run to the restroom and

get a protein shake before you got here to record.

I lit you left and came back, obviously, I knew they were kissing.

From the moment that she said she'd broken up and Tristan says it's unfair, I knew it was

going to happen because it's a parallel storyline that they have already, they've hammered

that drum a bunch and it's well done.

There's no doubt that it's well done and it makes sense with the characters.

It takes me out of the story a little bit and so I know it's going to happen more in

the future.

It's just not my favorite.

That doesn't mean it can't be good.

It's just not my favorite thing that they do.

I'm also 100% team Dean in this scenario.

I still think Dean's a pretty great guy and Tristan's kind of a just a rich A-hole, so.

So yeah, I did not enjoy it.

I just didn't like it nearly as much as 16.

It was almost a perpendicular storyline for a while because Moral Eye was dating now

secretly and then worry wasn't, but then it went back and parallel again.

The truck so interesting.

Yeah, they couldn't let it go.

But both of them having this thing and then going to this other, they spend time with

the one guy and then they go to the other guy.

Spent time with Luke.

Luke's got Rachel now.

Dean dumped me and now I'm going to Tristan and I'm going to next one.

Why going on?

What kind of protein shake was it?

It was a meal to true nutrition, it was a cinnamon flavor.

Really?

About 25 grams of white protein, yeah.

Oh, okay.

And then no digestive issues.

No sugar, no digestive issues.

I'm okay, Graham, we've got to try this.

It sums up the emotional confusion that Rory has very succinctly.

That was my favorite line.

It was that simple after all.

Yeah.

I loved this.

So she comes downstairs after being waking up woke up.

She's up early now.

It does.

I will never know.

And sees that the furniture has been rearranged in the living room.

And she goes to question Rory about it.

And she acknowledges that the couch is now facing the opposite way of the TV.

And she's like the TV is too heavy.

I couldn't move it.

And lower lie says, well, this is good too.

It'll be like radio.

Yeah.

Very funny.

I love that line.

And I love that she lower lies trying to lovingly be like, hey, you're doing too much

without like, hey, you're doing too much.

It's very, very funny.

Dan?

Yeah.

The Suke Jackson storylines a little bit weird and like silly in a way that I don't know

if it works the best.

But when they fight, it's a really funny scene.

And Jackson's like, I told you to stay out.

I told you new helping.

And then Suke says, I wasn't helping.

I was suggesting.

And then Jackson says, you suggested the laid-aloud of my hand four times.

And I really did love that line as two characters that don't get nearly as much screen time.

That was my choice.

I keep hearing about team dean versus team Tristan.

So.

This I'm assuming is finally the big opening where Tristan sneaks in.

She's actually happening because you keep hearing about it.

Max is back.

I don't know.

Like Max says back.

Max is back.

I thought maybe he was just tossed aside and kind of forgotten about other than being

the teacher.

And then they spend the night or most of the night, which was like, wow, I didn't necessarily

see that coming, but I'm very innocent.

Also, another small way what moment was Rory and Lorelai talk through everything.

But then Rory decides she's not going to listen.

She's not going to deal with it.

She's going to ignore it.

But she usually almost always listens to Lorelai and Lorelai gets it.

But I was just interested like she chose now not to listen to her mom who's had all these issues.

That was kind of a weight.

And then lastly, I liked that the town reacted and got into it.

But it's also a weight.

What for me?

Because you know, you don't want to be totally pulled out of the story.

I guess a quirky tight knit community.

Yeah.

But that's tough.

Yeah.

It was so I want.

I love the idea that the town has all these fights about everything.

And I love their quirky characters.

I didn't mean to interrupt you, but it is what you're saying is exactly right.

I want all that.

And I guess the baggage that you get with that is sometimes they write it so incredibly

egregiously that it's everything.

Because this was not one in my opinion.

This isn't one where the town gets to jump in when literally it's so early in the morning,

the night after it happened and no one has talked to either of these two human beings.

That was hard.

You have to bless it to a three month teenage relationship.

This is not an uncommon thing.

Yeah.

So this happens a lot.

So it was like the whole town noticing.

I mean, as you know, I go through life, I realize most people are more concerned about what they're doing than other people.

Yeah.

So to be that involved and invested in a three month teenage relationship was interesting.

So there you go.

There was my weight.

Um.

Where were my weight?

You know, very enough.

She's at this party and Lane's Lane goes to dance with the guy and she hands her her jacket, right?

And then Rory has her jacket in her hands and she walks from the corner and then she just places them on a chair.

I mean, that just seems dangerous.

Your friend is entrusting you with her jackets.

You're leaving it willy-nelly and she could have left her own jacket willy-nelly.

That's fine.

Right.

Your friend is entrusting you with her jacket.

You got to either hold it, find a place.

It's not just a chair.

And then you walk away.

Well, can I say to you?

The party, they don't steal jackets.

They actually replaced them with higher-end jackets.

Um, I didn't love when they, Laura and Max were in bed after, you know, having fun time together.

They were talking and she says, you are a wonderful man.

And he says, I know.

I feel like that would kind of ruin the vibe.

But it's not like, I don't think you get used to hearing it.

Yeah.

It's just another day for me.

Another woman selling me.

I'm a great man.

Uh, I don't know.

I feel like I'd be like, all right.

Well, uh, you just didn't need to say it.

I feel like we need a freeze frame after he says that.

It's the biggest container of ice cream I've ever seen.
