Gimenez Benching Sparks WBC Debate

Andres Gamenez stood out for the Toronto Blue Jays during their run to the World Series last year.

The second baseman earned a platinum glove and three gold gloves for his top defense.

He also stepped up offensively at the bottom of the lineup.

In the American League Championship Series against the Seattle Mariners,

Gamenez hit 261 with a 320 on-base percentage and an 8.

42 OPS.

He smashed two home runs and drove in six runs over the seven games.

The Jays fell short of their first title in over 30 years, but he delivered in key spots.

Now with opening day weeks away, Gamenez joined team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.

He's the only Blue Jay on the roster, and Venezuela has won all three pooledy games to reach the quarterfinals.

Fans got a surprise when Venezuela benched Gamenez for their final pool game against the undefeated Dominican Republic.

Blue Jays supporters hoped to see him shine in the match-up,

which decides if the winner faces South Korea or Tupper Japan next.

The team chose Ezekiel Tovar, at shortstop, and Luis Areas at second base instead.

Both are off to hot starts with Tovar 3 for 3, and Areas posting a 1.947 OPS and two homers.

Gamenez could return for the quarterfinals before heading back to Jays Camp next week.
