Take Friday off, go Friday Saturday Sunday Monday, rest up for a big week one because next week football starts Wednesday the first game of the season. Thursday Rams vs 49ers then of course we are almost one week away from the reveal of the Nick Seriani and Sean Manian offense against the Washington commanders 425 pm at Lincoln Financial Field.

1:01We got a lot to get into today as both how he roseman and Nick Seriani were on WIP on Wednesday as part of the Eagles Autism Foundation radio thon always a really cool event. You can check out some of the auction items. I did see one particularly cool one and I'm sure this will go for a lot but Jalen Hertz shuts down the Jordan store for you the new one on Walnut and Philly and you go shopping with Jalen Hertz and I would assume your kids it would be funny if just like a grown adult did it and just went and shop Jordan with them actually I think that'd be pretty dope. Like I would love to do that with Iverson I'd be very nervous to do it but it would be cool. It would also be I feel like a high pressure situation to suggest shoes in front of Jalen Hertz. Like if he is a Jordan guy he has all the Jordan's. I actually wouldn't surprise me if he brought like custom Jordans for you. I know from guys in the locker room he's a he's very generous with the Jordan's that he hands out. So yeah, a lot of cool items for the Eagles radio Eagles radio thon they're available

2:01all day. I'll tweet out the link but also you can listen to WIP lots of information about where to get them different items. Sequan Barkley designed the shirt this year. So very fun times. But as part of radio thon a lot of people within the Eagles calling to WIP to talk about their specific items and then of course talk a little football as well. So today we're going to go over some of the interesting things that how he roseman and Nick Seriani had to say I thought how he wanted the strongest endorsements of Jalen. He's maybe ever given so we will get into that before we get into that go check out go birds insider go birds insider it is an extension of the go birds family. It's a chance for us all to hang out. I love during the day logging into the chat seeing what you guys are talking about talking with talking to you guys about football and I'll say this the preseason chats for the game were good. I can only imagine what week one is going to be like. So you know, I'm sure if you're listening to this pod you have people you like to talk Eagles with. 3:02of watch the game along with come check out go birds insider. I think it is a lot of fun and the link is in the podcast description. Now the schedule for today nothing the Eagles are in the facility, but there's no media availability, which means no press conferences, no practices none of that. It is a weird week right where they have a week in between the game and in between the end of preseason and the beginning of preparation for week one. Nick Seriani said they're still working. I think they're getting a lot of cardio in staying in shape and preparing for that Wednesday practice, which will be the first practice of the season. So nothing on the schedule today as for injuries again, no injury report. We don't get the official first injury report until next Wednesday, but I do think three injuries to keep an eye on as we look ahead to next week. Obviously Eli Stowers with the hamstring, right? Where's he at? How's he feeling? Does he practice next Wednesday? My guess is he doesn't practice and my guess is he misses week one and excuse me and then maybe plays in week two, but week one, I don't expect to see him.

4:04It would certainly be a positive development if he was practicing week one. I think I'm sorry practicing next Monday as I fight the hiccups back here. If he was practicing next Wednesday, because I think it's good for him to get on the field, get more reps in, but I really don't think he plays in week one. Worth monitoring next Wednesday, Eli Stowers with the hamstring injury. Jonathan Jones, a shoulder injury. Now he has been back at practice. It seems like he's good to go. Made the 53 man roster. My guess is he will practice next Wednesday, but is he active? Is he healthy enough to play in a game? We should get some more information about that next Wednesday. Then Mark Helbel, a knee injury. He missed, I think roughly probably the last week of camp, didn't play in the last preseason game, could potentially be an active for week one. If he's not healthy, Fred Johnson certainly will be the top backup swing tackle. I think by keeping Fred Johnson, they made it clear that they are going forward with him as the backup swing tackle. Could Mark Helbel be active week one? I wouldn't completely rule it out, but the health obviously going to be a big part of that.

5:04Eli Stowers, Jonathan Jones and Mark Helbel, the three players to keep a eye on there. As I said, how he roseman was on WIP on Wednesday. He was asked, and I'll give Joe to camera credit for this. Joe to camera, the excellent host of the morning show, asked him about his flat out the way you could ask this question. Someone that does ask questions for a living at press conferences, like you could not have phrased this any clear. It is a question we have talked about again and again and again. Is Jalen on the hot seat? Why didn't they give him a contract extension? Joe to camera asked how he roseman that question straight up, and here is what how he roseman had to say. There was not a contract extension for Jalen Hertz. Someone said to me recently, the story of this season other than winning is these five words, Jalen Hertz on the clock. Many believe it's a make or break year for Jalen to remain the Eagles franchise quarterback. Do you agree that this is a critical year for Jalen Hertz make or break to remain the

6:09team's quarterback? No, I don't agree with that. I think that the bottom line for us in the positions that we're in and really for all our fan base is when it put all games. All the guy does is when football games. That includes our head coach as well. I think that for me, the barometer is when in football games. In terms of what Jalen does, he's another guy with a tremendous track record. All he does is go out and play good football. Really excited to have him as our quarterback, excited about the season and what we have going forward. I know there are a lot of fan bases out there that would love the results that we've had with him as our starting quarterback. You can hear the question in there from Joe DeCamera as well as the answer from Howie. I thought it was one of the strongest endorsements Howie's ever given, certainly in the last year of Jalen Hertz. I'd imagine back when he won the Super Bowl and things like that when they signed into

7:10the contract. There was probably some pretty strong endorsements. But recently, I would say Howie, two times has been kind of noteworthy. But Worthily asked about it once was at a press conference where I asked him about the articles and he kind of dodged the question a little bit and kind of said, we don't leak things basically. Then he was asked again another time and did give Jalen an endorsement. But I thought the no at the beginning of that answer was pretty definitive. Now, I will couch all of this by saying, what's Howie going to say? What's Howie going to say? No, yeah, you're right. Look, it's a big year for Jalen. We have to see if this guy is the future of our team. He's not going to say that. He's not going to say, yeah, let's see if he can run the offense. Not going to say that. But I do think there were ways he could have answered it if he wanted to try to send a message where he could have answered it in a less in a way with less conviction. He could have said, you know, you ask if Jalen's on the hot seat, I would say all of us every season are on the hot seat. You know, I hope I have my job in a year. And so he could have gone like that route with it, right?

8:12He could have gone. Jalen's won a lot of games. I think for all of us this year, we're trying to show something new. And I think that's an important part of every game. Everybody wants to grow every year. Like he could have gone that route. Instead he went full conviction, no, like no. And I didn't think he had to do that. So I think the fact that he did it is a little bit noteworthy. Now I think where he's doing it is also noteworthy. I think, you know, how he doesn't live under a rock despite how he likes to kind of jokingly act like he does sometimes. You know, how he knows WIP talks about Jalen a lot. How he knows that, you know, we talk a lot about if it's Jalen, you know, is he the guy the future? And like, obviously, we're not the only place. There's a lot of reporting and other people and podcasts and shows that talk about it. But I do think how he's aware of where he's at. And I think he used it as a chance to, you know, on a place that questions Jalen a lot, to really like hammer home, you know, no. So if I'm Jalen, I like hearing that. I think the part about how he wins a lot is very noteworthy, like using a very clear

9:16talking point, like thing that Jalen supporters use, right? Like people that think Jalen's a good quarterback, the winning is definitely something to point to. And it should be like the winning is very noteworthy. So how are we going to that? I thought was also noteworthy. Now, again, how he's not going to say anything. So, you know, I think you, it is certainly fair to say these reports from ESPN probably paying a better picture of how they feel. But I also do think I sense a little bit within the organization, more public backing of Jalen. Now, maybe that is because of the ESPN article and they know they want to try to all together, like portray that they like Jalen, right? You know, you think of the Jay Glazer thing about how his biggest takeaway from being in the building was how happy people are with Jalen. And I think there's a lot of authenticity to that. I do think Jalen has attacked this new offense head on. I think Jalen is someone that learns from mistakes for lack of a better term. And like I do think he has even just being around him, like you can see him talking with teammates and stuff like that.

10:17So I think there is a very real part of that. But I also think until they pay him, they can't say for sure he'll be the guy in 2027. So would he completely shock me if they paid him before week one? No, I can picture them doing that when it's shock me if they paid him next off season, not at all. I think he'll probably have a good enough year where they do pay him. I think Jalen will be the quarterback in 2027. But I thought how he like very strong conviction there in defending Jalen. So how he also was asked about the backup quarterbacks. And you want to talk about like a strong statement. I love a good rebuttal, right? If you listen to me, what you are now, if you listen to me on WIP, I love to debate. I love thinking of comebacks at things. I love the quick thinking of it, which is funny. I'm actually, I think in my everyday life, not a really quick thinker. But how he was asked about the backup quarterback position. You know, essentially you kept four. How do you feel about it? The reports are that the quarterbacks haven't been that good out of camp. And how we really brought just like the end all be all of answers for this.

11:20So here is how he wouldn't ask about the backup quarterbacks. How likely is it that the backup quarterback could change from week to week once the season starts? Again, anything that goes into preparing for our opponents, what's going on, you know, we'll keep close to the vest. You know, it's funny. I had anticipated questions on the backup quarterback. So I had our crack VP of communications, PR, whatever's title is, bling this morning. And I said, I feel a little bit of a sense of deja vu. I feel that here. Can you tell me some of the things that were written in 2017 about Nick Fowler? I remember Nick Fowler and his August. And some of the questions when we cut the roster was like, oh, you're going to cut Nick Fowler. And I think the other part of this, which some of those, we got those receipts. And not only in 2017, but back in 2018, again, Nick Fowler and his preseason were under scrutiny.

12:24There's a statue in front of our stadium and it is Nick Fowler's, by the way. And I also had this conversation with Coach Fangio this morning. And anytime I just want to get Coach Fangio to smile, I just change from football to baseball. You know, he don't tell him until the keeper that I do with him, you know, to get him a little bit happy. And I said, remind me, you know, was there something going on with the Phillies earlier in the year before? What did they want? 16 of the last 18, 16 to the rest? 15 of 17. Is it 15? 15 of 17. That's pretty good. And a lot of the players that, you know, have had careers where you can kind of point to what they're going to do at the end of the year, they've started to come around, right? It kind of happens. So I think a lot of this for us is if you have a track record and you've seen somebody do it time after time, and you get a moment in time where maybe circumstances have changed, you're still, many times going to rely on the track record to understand that this player has shown it to you.

13:27And I think when we look at our backup quarterbacks, those guys both have shown it over time. Obviously we got a young quarterback there too that we're excited about that we're going to develop. And, you know, boom, roasted. I mean, I like roasted if this was a debate, I think the debates over. Now, that doesn't mean the people that are questioning the quarterbacks, including me, the backup quarterbacks are wrong. We'll find out, right? Like Nick Foles didn't play well to start that playoff run. Didn't play well in that playoff game, right? Obviously won the game, did enough to win the game. But, you know, if that ends differently, like if Julio Jones catches that ball, then I think we're all sitting there going. Foles was hurting, training camp, didn't play great. And you went with them and it ended up costing you a shot at the playoffs. So clearly the results of how it turned out matter. I also think how we can point to how you playing training camp is not always how you play in the regular season. And Foles was hurt that time. Now, Foles had more recent success.

14:28Foles had had more success. I think Andy Dalton has had more success. I guess, that's a great question actually. Now, I think about me. Andy Dalton has had more consistent success. I think Nick Foles has had higher ceilings than Andy Dalton has and not just a Super Bowl. You know, the 27 and 3 season or 28, 3 season, whatever it was. I don't know if Andy Dalton's ever want to play off game. Nick Foles won in 2018. Andy Dalton certainly hasn't won a lot of playoff games if he's won playoff games. But regardless, I think that, you know, how he's point holds true to an extent. Like, we don't know what's going to happen. I think it's fair to be skeptical. I think it's fairly Andy Dalton hasn't played well the past few years. They seem to be exhibiting a lack of faith in Tanner McKee. But by keeping them on the 53, you could also argue that's a pretty big sign of faith. But I just thought how he's point was a good one. Like, look at this exact situation that happened in 2017. People were worried about the backup quarterback spot. And the guy went on to be Super Bowl MVP. Would I guess that Andy Dalton or Tanner McKee will be Super Bowl MVP this year?

15:31Would be pretty surprising, right? Now, I think there's also a little bit of pointing to an outlier. You know, it's like, it's like when people go, well, you can win a Super Bowl with the backup quarterback. Like, sure, you can. It has happened. It is not the way you want to go about it. Or when a player has a bad camp, was brought up a lot as Patrick Robinson. Patrick Robinson in 2017. Bad camp. Now, he switched to inside as opposed to staying on the outside. But he ended up having a very good year, even a more recent example that they like to point to now, which is Cooper D'Agin playing in that final preseason game, not playing well, going on to obviously have one of the better rookie seasons and any, any you'll excuse me, any Eagles history. So I think that they can point to these examples. I think they are outliers to an extent, but it does show that this could work out. Like, it's not locked in stone that any Dalton will play poorly if he plays. It's not locked in stone that Tanner McKee might have regressed from year to year. Doesn't mean they definitely should have kept for quarterbacks.

16:32I think as is the case with foals, like how he can use that example because of the results. And much like with Jalen to kind of pull this full circle, the results are really what matters at the end of the day. Like Jalen can make an argument for the Hall of Fame because of results on the field. How he can use that great rebuttal because the results on the field of the backup quarterback spot. But I thought it was a, an interesting and a very good rebuttal from how he so another thought before we get into Nick Sireani about something I saw on Wednesday. So Ryan Paganetti, who does an unbelievable job, like truly an unbelievable job creating original content that people in the league really love and that's smart and that gets picked up a lot of places, put out something on Wednesday where he went and looked at, I don't know how many was like 52 Patriots home games or something like that during the Bill Bella check error, I believe it was. And what he saw was when you look at the TV angle of when opposing teams are taking the kick, the screen behind the field goal polls to like the field goal with the yellow

17:37uprights, right? The screen behind it, the screen was showing the field goal uprights, but they were off. So it almost looks like if you look straight ahead at it, there's four of them because there's the one on the screen. There's the real one, the one on the screen and the real one. So if you're a kicker, you could almost see how you would when you look straight, not be like 100% sure which one it is. I'm sure you're pretty sure, but you could look and see how you might be kind of tricked by it, right? So he went and looked and saw that this is something to Patriots dead. And then somebody else pointed out that the Patriots then made almost 10% more of their kicks at home than the opposition. And when the Patriots were kicking, they showed like silence or something on the screen. They didn't show these yellow uprights. And so the conclusion is a Patriots were intentionally showing these uprights off a little bit to throw off kickers and the results ended up mattering. So outside of just being a good observation from Ryan and an interesting NFL fact, it did make me think of the Eagles. So so many times on this pod, we talk about like something the Eagles say or won't say,

18:42right? Like the Eagles aren't saying if this player will practice. The Eagles aren't saying how long till this guy gets back. The Eagles aren't saying what their scheme is going to be like. The Eagles won't say who the back of quarterback is. The Eagles won't say when, Sean Manion, where Sean Manion is going to call the game from. And especially when I talk about it with James, when we both agree with this, like it's silly and it's annoying, but we understand it. And what I think this Patriots thing shows is that every little detail in the NFL matters, every little one, right? When like games are decided, besides the rare blowout, games are decided by very, very little things, very minor details, right? And I think that's why Nick Ceylon he's a great coach because he really focuses on those minor things. So I don't know who in the Patriots had the idea to move the goalposts over, but you could certainly argue that was like a really good idea, right? I don't know who with the Eagles has decided not to give out any more information and to like not do the whole talking publicly about anything. And actually Nick talks about this on the other side. But I think at the end of the day,

19:43the Eagles have clearly been vindicated in showing that like this strategy works. They don't talk about anything. And as a result, they've won a lot of games, not as a direct result, but in a game where even a half a percentage advantage helps them, I think that this study by Ryan Paganetti really shows that. So actually on the other side, Nick Ceylon he did talk a little bit about that. So we will get into that on the other side. But first, a word from our sponsors. Drink up, baby. 20:49And it is funny to think of, you win the auction, which would be very cool. You get to play horse with them. And horse I completely understand. That is like an interactive move around, you talk while it happens game. It's kind of funny to think you win the auction, you spend all this money, you're so excited, you get to the facility and it's just like rock paper scissors shoot, boom done. Rock paper scissors shoot, boom done. And like the whole game is done in 15 seconds. I do think rock paper scissors shoot should always be best out of three. And I think it should be assumed that it should always be best out of three. I see people play rock paper scissors shoot sometimes on social. And they do it one time and I'm like, that is not there. That's not an accurate depiction of the game. But he like there's no strategy involved there, right? Like I think multiple times you start to get strategy. Like, oh, he threw this, now I should throw that or there's no way he'll throw rock two times in a row. Right? Like I should throw scissors. So I think it should always be best out of three. But as I said, the Eagles really do a good job of holding information. And I think it does help them win. So Nick Seriani was asked by by Eagles Hall of Famer, Hugh Douglas, and was asked, you know,

21:53you are always very hesitant to say anything at the podium. But also people rip your offense in the preseason, but you know, you can't really say a ton about it at the podium. So Nick Seriani was asked about that. And here's what he had to say. So, you know, I know sometimes I kind of probably feel like I'm not giving great answers or giving full answers. But, you know, my job is is make sure we're winning as many football games as possible. So, you know, at times I'm giving information that I feel like is not going to hurt the team in any way, shape or form, even if it's a it's a littlest thing. If I feel like it could hurt the team and our next performance, I'm going to keep that under wraps. So we've heard Nick say a little bit of this before talking about that Falcons game in 2021. He does reveal this time. It was the Niners that knew something from that game. So shout out to Kyle Shanahan for for figuring that out. But yeah, I think they are they're very protective of these things for a reason. They they win football games. They have a lot of talent or had a lot of talent.

22:54I think they still have a lot of talent, but certainly more talented on offense in 2024 than they are now or whatever you want to say. They win games on the margins. Like that's how you have to win in the NFL. There's a reason they have a really, really good record in one score games over the last five years. There's a reason they are really good. You know, they win the turnover battle and they win the game because they're really good at not losing it in other ways. So you give them an extra possession and they're going to win the game. So, you know, again, back to the Patriots thing. Like it sounds silly to think somebody would spend so much time thinking about like moving the field goal poles over. But it helped it helped the Patriots. So thought that was thought that was super interesting. And again, just nick hammering at home. Like I'm not going to say things at the podium. And that is as long as he's winning, you know, it's his right to it's his right to do that. But the other thing Nick was asked was about the four quarterbacks. And the audio of this is pretty short. So I'm not going to play the audio. But he was basically like they are in the roster spot.

23:54We're excited to have them. We're excited for that room. And here's what I disagree with Nick. Like I know practices are not the only thing. And I know preseason games are not the only thing. But and there's the meeting room and there's all these like things they they see that we don't get to see. And when they're watching practice, they obviously know more about what they're watching. I don't know if many beatwriters that watched every practice, whoever your favorite beatmider beatwriter might be, would say that like Dalton earned a spot. He wasn't good in the preseason games. He wasn't really good in training camp. You could say Tanner didn't earn a spot. If you want, he didn't play well in the preseason games. He didn't play overly great for the majority of training camp. So when you say these guys earned a spot, I just personally disagree from from watching camp. I think if you want to say they like court, like they like having extra quarterbacks and they value the position. Sure. If you want to say and I think this is it, they feel they should be able to trade one of them. And they are not going to at least as of now cut one without getting something back.

24:54You could say that too. But I think at the end of the day to say they earned a roster spot. I mean, I think Elijah Moore earned a roster spot. I think AJ Epinessa earned a roster spot. I don't think they named it all like earned a roster spot. I just don't from watching them. Now another thing Nick was asked about was the new offense. And I thought that was a good question. I think this one was from this one might have been from Gileo actually. And if it's not, it was from you. But Nick was asked about the new offense and how much fun he's kind of having installing it, you know, learning the new parts of the offense that I'm sure Sean Manian is teaching. And here's what Nick had to say. It's been a lot of fun because again, there's so many things. You know, there's we change for a reason. And I think that's one of the hardest things as when you've had the success that we've had to be like, you know, when to change, when to know how to change and all those different things. And so, you know, we're changing. But we'd be crazy not to add some of the things that we've done really well in the past.

25:57And so it's been good to just be able to get together, you know, learn new things. And that we know we're going to help us and then be able to sprinkle some of the things in that we've done in the past that we know can continue to help us. And I really, I really am enjoying the staff. They do a great job of working together. And coming up with good thoughts, good communication in our film sessions. And getting to know these guys, good people, really good football coaches. And it's been a fun process to go through. And we're looking forward to continue to build on that. So there's been a lot of talk, obviously all off season. Like, who's offence as is? Manians or as it's Erionis? Who made the decision to go to the offense? And I don't think anything is clearly like yes or no. Like it is like, man, he's offence or it's Nick's offense or like how he made decision or Nick made the decision. I think it's a little bit of everything. And I think Nick is excited about the new offense. I do think Nick was a huge part if not the driving force and like making the change.

27:00I think what Nick says in there about how even though you're winning, you still have to make changes. I think there's some truth to that. And I also think this is just me. Like, I think that Nick deserves to be discussed as one of the best head coaches in the NFL. I think sometimes he is not because people are critical of the offense and kind of like how simplistic it can be. And I think Nick thinks, you know, I'm just guessing here, like if I run this offense and we win, like what can you say then? Like if I'm running this stupid offense, everybody loves so much and everyone's like, oh, look at all the pre-snap motion. The Eagles are running and like, oh, a play. Like then and then I'm winning. What can you say then? Like what would if Nick wins a Super Bowl again this year, right? Or let's say goes to the conference championship game, averages a ton of points with this offense. Like what can you say then? What would you be able to say to not put him as a top three or four head coach in the league? Now what will happen is people will say it's man, you know, much like if Hertz has a really good year, you know, people will talk about, well, they ran the ball really well. We're like, some people are pretty locked in on their opinions. But I think there is an excitement about from Nick about the idea of trying to do this a different way and an updating thing.

28:07So we'll see again, I've expressed kind of my opinion on all this. If it works, no big deal. If it doesn't, like I don't think this is an offense that they will stick with. I think they will go back to trying to win games because ultimately that's kind of all that matters. And as has been very much discussed over the last 24 hours.
