And on their way to a 13th consensus, all American with Jeremy Fears, let's go.

Our Michigan State Spartans just picked up or you just want to keep on commenting on
Jeremy Fears.
How awesome he is.
Yes, we will get to that because some big all American news also dropped about him and
we're going to get into the news, the quotes, the notes from the opening press conference
for the opening spring practice of the football season.
But first things first, man, busy day in East Lansing and not just for all the great kids
out there that have been hitting the bars, hearts and six in the morning on St. Patrick's
day, but no, no, no, my goodness gracious football with Eli stump.
That's right, six foot five quarterback gunslinger out of Sunbury, Ohio, who plays at one
of the greatest high school names I've ever heard, a big walnut high school.
Let's go.
Anyway, for the fight in Walnuts, probably not their name, but let's just go with it.
Anyway, 12 and two last season, trip to the semi finals in the state of Ohio for division
two.
So really solid season for a big walnut quarterback again by Eli stump.
Now, stump is a three star on rivals.
He does not have a ranking yet on 24 seven sports, but I'd be willing to bet a large size
of my 401k that he will eventually get ranked on 24 seven sports.
I would imagine debuting as a three star this early into the cycle now, who would a Michigan
state beat for his services here?
He only had three other offers that have been reported on that is Kent State, Toledo and
Cornell.
So you see the three star ranking on rivals, you see the no ranking of 24 seven sports.
I want to be all too panicked about the ranking or lack there of just yet.
Yes, well, okay, it is about to be that time where kids aren't going to start committing
to places.
Still is relatively early.
You want to go back to last March, for example, Cade Kaufman, the 2026 quarterback commit.
He was a three star kind of just like a middle of the road three star.
Now, of course, he eventually did work his way up to being a four star, a top 300 kid,
a top 20 quarterback in his class.
Now, is that where we're going to guarantee for Eli stump here to work himself all the
way to top 300?
I'd be a little surprised that be wishful thinking, but I think by the time it's all set
and done, he'll get his third star, maybe even a highly rated three star.
But look, here is what he brings to the table.
This is why Fitzgerald was in on him early next shared and quarterback coach coach McNulty
was in on this kid and they wanted him committed as soon as he possibly could get committed.
It's big size like I said, six foot five, I like that's the ideal height that you want
out of a quarterback.
He's somewhere around that 185 ish pound range.
So certainly mobile with that, just like he says on his Twitter profile, he runs a 4.7
to 40 time, which for a quarterback, you absolutely take and in a Nick shared an offense with
his background with some quarterbacks, he's no stranger to having a dual threat guy
so when they can stretch the field out a little laterally here.
But with also 185 pounds, not to not to say that's broomstick thin, but you could add
some size onto that frame too.
Now last year for big wallnut, he had a 69% completion percentage, not too shabby.
And you go ahead, you look at his highlight tape on huddle or you to wherever you're
finding these clips guys, I saw a good pocket presence, I gotta say for a junior quarterback,
this is a kid that stepped into the pocket.
He knew when to bail out and it wasn't always a bailout and scramble situation.
No, like I said, he would still find his way within the pocket.
So quick agility, good sense of awareness, which I like to see here.
And I also saw too, and this is highlighted by the 69% completion percentage.
Some really nice touch on these throws.
So look, of course, like all high school quarterbacks, there is room to grow, but this
is a kid that they are solid or sold on and that is the third commit of the 2027 class.
Now if you are on social media, you are on Twitter, you would have noticed that Paffet's
Gerald gave two of his little teaser pat signals is what they are calling it.
You know, the little video that he tweets out whenever there's a commit.
So we're still waiting for another player's name to be announced at the time of recording
and it's not that announced yet, but I would suspect this will be on the offensive side
of the ball.
Perhaps someone that can help protect this quarterback, Eli stump, but really quick before
we move it on to what Paffet's Gerald had to say at his press conference at Michigan
State, stacking it with Kate Kaufman, not too bad.
That's a really good one to punch.
And when you talk recruiting, I'm always interested in who came in the class at that position
group the year before.
So you got Kaufman, you got stump, you can do some work with that.
So again, guys, third commit of the class on the offensive side of the ball, second kid
out of Ohio right behind Savior Owens, they're running back and then grant Adloff an interior
offensive lineman.
I would expect this next commit to be at the tackle position here.
So don't want to say names, don't spoil the kids, big announcement or anything, but that's
where I would expect this next announcement to be made here now.
As Michigan State opened up practice at basically like 3.30 in the morning today on Tuesday,
their first of 15 spring practices, Paffet's Gerald did speak after with the media and we'll
get into it more later on in this episode.
We're going to kind of do a sandwich here of football talk for a segment, basketball
talk, third segment, back to football talk at the very end here.
The most important thing that I think that he talked about, it wasn't about the preparation
or the fact that he played alto sax when he was in elementary school.
Now, there's actually one piece of important news here that has to do with the personnel
that you'll be seeing on the field or hopefully that you'll be seeing on the field this
fall.
Someone did ask about an update on wide receiver Rodney Ballard now that he played for
Michigan State last year, cable on fairly well at the end of the season, but they're still
waiting for him to be cleared by the NCAA to play another season at Michigan State.
So Paffet's Gerald pretty much said, I would like my friends at the NCAA to hurry up
with that decision and I am going to match what Paffet's Gerald said, I just for my own
piece of mine and your piece of mine would like the NCAA to let us know, yeah, is Ballard
playing next year because this is also a receiver room.
That is very unproven guys.
A few weeks ago, when basketball didn't dominate everything, we talked at length about
what the receiver room is looking at right now.
You're bringing back Christian McRae, that's awesome, 24 catches.
You're bringing back Charles Tapplin, very promising young player, but he had one catch
last year.
And then Braille and Collier also comes back, he did not see any game action on the offensive
side of the ball, so zero catches.
So you're returning 25 catches from your team last year, now you did bring us some transfers
right.
Frederick Moore from Michigan, KK Smith from Notre Dame, but still, those are guys that
were kind of buried on their death chart too.
And yes, you did just get the commit from Samson Gash.
You have Zachary Washington coming into town, you have Ray Sean Elmore.
I would suspect Samson Gash the most likely freshman to produce from day one.
But man, oh man, this is a lot of new faces, a lot of unproven faces in this room.
So yes, if we can get Rod Boller back, I'd smile.
Paffet's Gerald would smile.
I'm sure Nick Sheridan would smile.
I'm sure you, the listener and the Michigan State football fan would also smile too, guys.
Now speaking of smiling, hey, we're going to get back to basketball talk here, but we're
going to talk Jeremy Fears because he was named as an AP second team, all Americans.
So let's get to that in a little bit, but first a word from Mazda.
I'm Collier Butler, host of Lockdown Women's Basketball.
And this is Mazda's Women's Basketball snapshot, celebrating the work.
No highlight reel can ever capture.
It's officially tournament time and the number one seeds are set.
Yukon is the number one overall seed at 34 and 0 and will headline Fort Worth regional
one at Dickies Arena joining the Fort Worth site as a top seed is Texas leading regional
three out west UCLA enters at 31 and one and takes the top spot in Sacramento regional
two.
While South Carolina leads Sacramento regional four.
The first round of the tournament tips off this Friday.
These moments are earned off the clock.
Those long before the lights ever come on the sweat, the fakes, the doubt, the scrapes
and coming back for more every time Mazda puts that same drive into every detail wins
to find the moment putting in the work that defines you.
There's more to what Mazda because there's more to you college basketball.
It's nonstop.
You know it.
It's big games tight spreads momentum swings with every single dribble.
It feels like guys from the early tip off to the late night west co shootouts.
There is always action on the board and now fan duel is giving you a way to turn that
energy into even bigger potential wins with the college basketball profit boost guys.
Now this is how it works.
You build any college troops parlay that you want.
I mean, you want to go big game haunting for massive upsets.
You want to play a little bit more on the chalky side or of course I do it pretty much
everyone.
Just mix and match a little bit of it, right?
You can mix spreads, totals, player props, however you see the slate playing out in your
head the next few days.
Guys, go ahead, put it on your parlay slip and then just opt in, apply the profit boost
and instantly bump up the potential payout of your college basketball parlay.
Just like I said, guys, go safe, go bold, ride with the team that you've been following
all season.
Like at the time of recording Michigan state minus 15 and a half point favorites against
North Dakota state.
It's all up to you.
It's your parlay, your style now with even more upside behind it head to fandall.com to
get started.
Again, guys, it's fandall.com.
It's fandall.
Play your game.
Also, if you've been looking to get into the every day or club now is a great time to
get in on that guys and by the way, shout out to the everyday listeners first and foremost,

Every day or club, it's free from March promo code March.
Go ahead, sign up at the link below.
Now, let's get into our guy Jeremy fears as if we haven't, you know, just buttered his
biscuit enough this season.
Let's keep talking about how awesome he is, right?
I mean, because we're not the only ones that think he's great.
Turns out the AP they also think that he's pretty cool too.
He just made second team AP all American honors guys, which hey, look, I think is an awesome
spot for him to land on.
I could there have been an argument for first team.
Yeah, perhaps maybe when we get to reading off who actually made the first team, you might
realize, okay, second team's just going to be just fine here.
Now, look, he's on his way to be coming to 13th consensus all American the AP.
This is the only one group that has named all Americans so far.
But as he start coming out, yeah, he's going to be the 13th Spartan to earn consensus
all American honors.
Right now, he's the fourth point guard under Tom Izzo to get all American honors.
The other ones being of course, Mattine Cleaves, Denzel Valentine and Cassius Winston.
So look, we all know why he got such high accolades here, getting on that second team all American
list and it starts with, well, we'll start here 15.7 points per game and he's doing it
in a myriad of ways, guys, right?
He is strong at getting to the free throw line, which is certainly a skill in this day and
age of basketball.
But of course, is not just that really strong finisher at the rim finishing 58% which for
a point guard that plays that plays eight days out of the week, guys.
Now he's even more points get into that mid range game into the paint.
Some that we were talking about last year is oh man, he would dribble, dribble, drive
and then he would like that floater or what he could do in that six to eight foot range.
But we've been seeing a little bit more of that this year as the season has gone a lot
especially in the last few weeks and it's not just from close range.
It's not just from the free throw striped.
One knock against his game has been, well, he's not really that good of a three point shooter.
Now, let me knock on wood before I keep talking.
So I want to protect myself here.
I don't need another lockdown Spartans jinx here, but these are the hard stats ever since
that Illinois game.
And this is including the Illinois game like he went all of three from three point land in
that game like this could even be a higher percentage if I really wanted a cherry pick.
But I went back and I started what happened after that loss against Minnesota in those eight
games from three point land.
He is 14 of 32 from three.
That's good for 43% guys.
So yes, he has picked up of course how often he's shooting three pointers and well, that's
because he's making them a whole lot in the last few weeks.
So yes, dynamic player here, Mr. Fears, but that's not it's not just scoring of course
because I look, I'll give you four stats, super basic, moderately basic, moderately analytical
and then super analytical to really paint a good picture of why he's a second team all
American.
Now the super basic stat is the assist said he's got the second most assist in the country.
294 assist, okay, that is only right behind Braden Smith of Purdue, okay, now all these
are going to be assist stats like this other one moderately basic stat.
Now this is one that we can all follow, it's assist divided by turnovers, it's just assist
to turnover ratio, which by the way, 4.08 is what we're looking at right here.
That is the fourth highest in all of college basketball, that is the second highest in all
of power five college basketball, just point all one behind Sam Hoiberg over at Nebraska.
And this is even with the little bit of turnover issues popping up.
The last few games here, six of his last seven games, he's got at least three turnovers.
That's what happens when you're on the court for 36, 37 minutes a night, that's what happens
when okay, there's been a lot asked of you, but even with all that, still in the top five
nationally for assist to turnover ratio.
Now let's keep going here, let's cross that bridge into analytics is what we'll call
this next one, sure why not, it's easy enough to follow and this is assist percentage.
What percentage of your teammates baskets are you assisting, see, it's not that scary
of a number here, it is 52.8% is what we're looking at for Jeremy fears assist percentage
here.
Now what does that mean?
Let's add some context to this, it's highest in the country, like that is going away.
This place highest assist percentage in the nation.
And this is actually rarified air that he's in right here, because since they started
tracking this stat on Bart Torvik.com in 2008, he is only the fifth player to finish the
regular season with an assist rate above 50%.
Only five players, and this isn't only power five, note, this is high major, mid major,
low major, all college basketball since 2008, okay guys.
He joins the likes of Kay Felder from Oakland University in 2016, Chris Dunn from Providence
in 2015, John Moreant, Murray State in 2019, and Jason Brickman of L.I.U. in 2014, so not
too shabby for our guy, Jeremy fears.
Now let's get into the weeds here, let's start to just confuse ourselves here with this
next stat, super analytical, we're going to go with a porpo got to rating.
You probably thought you just had a stroke hearing me say that you have no idea what I'm
talking about most likely and I don't blame you if you're a healthy individual that has
more hobbies than just college basketball, that's actually great, you've never heard of
this.
Now if you do know what I'm talking about, God, you're sick poppy, but anyway, it stands
for points over replacement per adjusted game at that usage, now basically how many points
are you providing to your team over a replacement level player?
It's kind of like war in baseball, right, like how many wins are you adding above a replacement
level player?
So here we got what let's just get into what this number actually means and the number
is 6.3.
So that's how many points he's adding over a replacement player.
That's eighth best in college hoops for this season, he is incredibly valuable to his
team.
All right, and this is the third highest at Michigan State since 2008, that's how long
the stats been around for 2008, I'll let you be the judge if that's a long time or
not that long ago.
I don't want to have that existential crisis right now, but anyway, since 2008, this is
the third highest porpogot to rating for a Michigan State Spartan only behind Denzel
Valentine's 2016 season and then cash is Winston's 2019 season, not too shabby of
years from those two Spartans in those years.
So look guys, let's go through the first team, second team, third team, all American
list, first team, no surprise, Cameron Booser from Duke, AJ DeBonsta for BYU, Darius A-Cuff
from Arkansas, Yaxel over at Michigan, and then JT Topin from Texas Tech.
Now, second team, of course, our guy Jeremy Fears.
Then there's Joshua Jefferson over at Iowa State, Braden Smith at Purdue, Keaton Wogler
from Illinois, and then Caleb Wilson from North Carolina and God, what a bummer that is
he'll be missing as a tournament, just like JT Topin.
Anyway, let's keep it moving here, third team, Christian Anderson from Texas Tech, LeBaron
Phylon from Alabama, Thomas Ha from Florida, Kingston Fleming from Houston, and then Graham
Ike from Gonzaga.
So with all that said, there is something interesting that like I just kind of dawned on me, and it's
been dawning on me the last few weeks, but after you see these three teams of all Americans,
it really solidifies that Jeremy Fears will be one of the most sought after players in
this offseason, and pause, I'm not trying to do fear factor, I'm not trying to get your
Jimmy's all on a Russell right now, that's just fact of the matter.
Like I think it would be naive to think that people aren't at least contacting the
Jeremy Fears side of things.
Now, do I have any reason to believe that he will leave Michigan State?
I don't.
Like no, I don't.
Could anything happen?
Absolutely.
Of all the players that I just named, I JT Topin coming off an ACL injury, he's not
on any draft boards, Christian Anderson, he's kind of a fringe lottery guy from Texas Tech.
Thomas Ha, he's a junior, he's a fringe lottery guy, but all these guys are shoe and lottery,
or they've just run out of eligibility.
So Fears is one of three, if not maybe four guys on this all American list that will be
coming back.
So not trying to spook anyone saying that, oh, he could leave.
No, I'm just saying.
You probably have to pay a lot to keep him here.
And that would be going against the isofilosophy, but I would assume that he was woken up to the
idea of, okay, if I want what will probably be a first team all American next year, look
to pony up some bucks here.
I just think it's interesting, like he will certainly be one of the highest regard of returning
college players.
Should he not go to the draft and then stay in the draft, you guys know what I'm talking
about here.
So let's get to some more football press conference news and notes.
I do have just one other basketball item because we've got some fan bases in college
basketball.
They're a little bit confused on what he operating budget is and what that means for NIL,
where Michigan State stacks up and all that, but let's get into all that in a hot second
guys.

All right.
So there was a fun little report here and this is from Matt Brown of extra points.
He does a great newsletter guys, especially more so in the weeds of the business side
of college sports here.
He foiled.
I think it was over 200 colleges on the total operational expenses for college basketball
teams around the country here.
So in first place, it's not Michigan State.
It's Indiana 32 million dollar total operational expenses for this season.
Okay.
Now, this is what this means here, guys.
I'm going to just read it right from the story here from Matt Brown of extra points.
The data you'll see referenced here and in all future newsletters in this series comes
from total operational expenses line from that report.
That number includes all the money of school spends on here.
It is.
Listen carefully.
Coaching salaries, administrative salaries, scholarships, travel, software, recruiting,
all sorts of other operational expenses.
It does not include athlete revenue share payments.
The numbers we are talking about here are not the salary cap for each team.
So when I say that Michigan State is seventh highest in the nation with an operational
expenses with 21 million dollars, second highest in the big 10.
That does not mean contrary to what Michigan fans who just found out what basketball was
a month ago, why you to believe that is not how much Michigan State is paying for a roster.
That does not mean they've spent the second highest in the conference on a roster.
Now, should they be spending that much on a roster?
Should they be the second highest spender in the conference for NIL?
Completely different topic of conversation.
We only have so much more time left in this show.
We'll probably talk about it in the off season, honestly.
So look, that is what it means.
Michigan State, yes, they spent a lot of coach salaries, no secret there, administrative
salaries.
I mean, the recruiting budget too can also blow up at bigger schools, like a Michigan
State right guys.
So look, I just wanted to clear that and I know that will fall on deaf ears.
Should any Michigan fan make it this long into the show and whether they could steal with
basic reality, whatever.
I just find it so weird how weird they've been about the whole, how much did you spend
on your team's thing?
If I was in their shoes and if I just listen to what everyone else has been saying that
they spent a lot on their roster, one of only 12 teams have spent at least $10 million
on their roster.
It's been reported.
I don't know why they would fight it.
Lean into it.
You guys spent a lot and you paid millions of dollars to pull the axle away from the NBA.
I would pimp that out.
I wouldn't just try to hide behind that.
I wouldn't try to paint my number two ranked transfer portal class as some diamond in the
rough findings.
You can enjoy a good season and also be honest how you got there.
It's all legal.
Now the tampering stuff is not legal, but the pain for players, like that's fine.
It's like, I don't know why they got to do that.
I don't know why you actually have to say that Kentucky offered him between $7 and
$9 million to go there as if that's how anyone negotiates.
Yeah, here's a $2 million window.
I don't know.
Just you figure out another between that that works.
I don't know why Dusty Mase has the axle doesn't ever swear after that incident.
I don't know why they got to be weird about every single thing along the way and what
should be a celebrated and great season.
I don't know why it's got to be a strange parade.
Anyway, guys, let's just clean up the the slot here from the press conference that happened
earlier this morning.
Paffet Cheryl talked.
Let's do a little boy, Vic, Jordan Hall, I'll talk to nothing all to earth shattering.
I Paffet Cheryl did shout out all the kids that he passed at 4 30 in the morning on the
way to the football building that were already lined up at the bars here.
And also, I just saying that that's what Kyle just all about, good, clean American fun,
but also adding that they play for the students here.
So I absolutely love that.
And he also kind of went into the minutia of how these 15 practices are going to be structured
and just remarking on the fact that it's crazy.
There's only 14 left.
This is going to fly by.
But first things first for these few practices here.
Just practicing how you practice.
Just getting a plan in place, also going over how they're communicating during practice.
So yes, you're starting at the ground floor here.
One of the pitfalls of starting a new coaching regime, especially for the what fourth time
in five seasons, it feels like.
Yeah, but I did like this quote from him saying quote to be the best practice team in America.
You have to be the best teammates in America, also really emphasizing how little they're
going to the ground and being physical in these early practices.
He actually counted that they only went to the ground five times and it could have been
more, but yet other teammates running in to keep guys from going to the ground.
So they'll be very cautious early on.
But don't don't assume that means that they are soft out there.
I mean, in a few practices, he pretty much said as much.
The physicality and the mental toughness will be ratcheted up by the end of these 15
spring practices.
Now, we did also say whether it was any media availability between now and the end or
the spring showcase on April 18th to not look too much into the depth charts here.
He said it could be very well who's just available that day.
He did say it could just be to stoke the flames for competitive depth.
But also I hear what you're saying, Paffet's Gerald.
I'm not going to listen though because.
Yeah, we're going to dissect every single depth chart that we see on any single photograph
from any beat reporter or any two second snippet that's posted on social media.
No, we will be losing our mind at any and all depth related items here.
Now, Jordan Hall really quick.
He said that, hey, for his last year, it was a big reason that Joe Ross.
He did come back.
He wanted to be in a system that he already knew for his final season.
And he also shattered out Caleb Wheatland, an interesting linebacker prospect and
interesting because he played a lot and produced at a good level at Maryland.
Transferred to Auburn last year, didn't really play a ton at Auburn last year,
but he had this to say about him, quote, super twitchy, athletic smart.
I'm excited to see his growth as we go through spring ball and also remarked that he
was voted as a unity counselor for this team, despite being here for just two months.
So not too shabby.
That really quick, Alessio Milavoyavik, speaking of your quarterback, your loved his energy.
Like he's got enthusiasm and he was also getting pepper questions with no breathing room
right after his answer.
It was just one after one after one, but like he's fired up about Paffits Gerald.
He likes the earlier schedule of practicing starting at 630, which good on you for a college
kid, especially, but yeah, he loves Paffits Gerald's energy, saying, quote, it's contagious.
And also when you get a coach louder than everyone else, it fires everyone else up.
He did not mean that as a shot at Jonathan Smith, but I think that we could all just tell
it even as neutral observers from the outside that there is a different energy in that building
and that will be rippled across all the players there.
So as for the rest of Alessio Milavoyavik's St. Patrick's Day, which was a joyous and
forgetful holiday at times, who are we kidding here?
It was a great time as a student.
So what was the rest of Alessio Milavoyavik's day looking like for St. Patrick's Day?
After getting out of the football building in the late morning, he actually said that
they're going to read books to the local elementary school and then it's back to the football
building for night meetings.
So they don't live the same life that you and I did guys.
These guys are all about the business over there in the football building.
All right, speaking of business, we're going to get back to all things first round game,
Spartans, Bison of North Dakota state coming up on Thursday.
We are joined by Mike McFeely.
He is a reporter over in Fargon, North Dakota, great chat with him.
That'll be on tomorrow's show.
And we will get to our final thoughts before it's three seed Spartans, 14 seed Bison.
Oh, God.
Let's just tip the game off already, but until then, guys, take care of yourselves.
