Grown Ass Man Podcast #5: Inevitably You Get Yelled At

About this episode

Chairshot Radio Network is made possible by:

Greg and Patrick talk college move-in chaos, difficult parents, test screenings, workplace upheaval, logistics, and growing through change.

The Grown Ass Man Podcast is back with Episode 5, and this week Greg DeMarco and Patrick O’Dowd manage to turn college move-in chaos, test screenings, workplace upheaval, and parents behaving badly into another episode that feels less like a planned show and more like the conversation that naturally happened.

The episode opens with Greg talking about attending a test screening for an upcoming movie, complete with the NDA, the lack of concrete details he can actually share, and the strange experience of seeing something before almost anyone else. It becomes less about the movie itself and more about the novelty of being part of the process, knowing you have seen something unfinished, and walking away curious enough to want to see what changes by the time the final version hits theaters.

From there, Patrick takes over with stories from one of the busiest times of his year: college move-in. With nearly 14,000 students moving into on-campus housing at UMass, the process is less “drop your kid off at the dorm” and more full-scale logistics operation. Centralized check-ins, keys, lines, professional movers, stadium coordination, early mornings, and thousands of people all have to somehow work together without the entire system collapsing.

Of course, the real entertainment comes from the parents.

Patrick breaks down the ways parents try to bend rules, skip steps, make exceptions for themselves, and generally turn an already complicated process into something even more difficult. One dad even tries flashing a badge to get his way, only to discover that move-in procedures do not care nearly as much about authority as he hoped. Meanwhile, students sometimes make things harder in completely different ways, including refusing help and choosing to drag themselves across campus instead.

The stories also include a new check-in system that nearly creates disaster before IT is able to save the day, reinforcing one of the episode’s strongest themes: when a process is this big, everything works right up until the moment one small thing does not.

Greg then shifts the conversation in a much more personal direction with a major workplace development that raises questions about leadership, stability, and what happens when the person everyone relies on decides it is time to step away. It changes the tone of the episode without derailing it, giving Greg and Patrick room to talk about work, responsibility, and the strange moment when something that once felt permanent suddenly does not.

Episode 5 is about systems, stress, parenting, work, and grown adults somehow finding new ways to make simple things harder than they need to be. Whether it is college move-in, corporate change, or just trying to get through a process without somebody demanding special treatment, Greg and Patrick once again prove that everyday life usually provides more than enough material.

What are you showing us? Zero Mercy. Well, there you go, zero Mercy. Patrick O'Dowdy is showing us a bowling ball here on the Girl and Ask Man podcast. Let's play the song. He's a man, such a man. He's a real. I'm a man. I'm 40. That does mean this is another episode of the Girl and Ask Man podcast. Number four, I believe. I should have looked at that before we started recording. That this is number four. We're going to say four. You say four. You have a four? Sure. We'll say four. He's too busy looking at bowling. He doesn't know. He doesn't know. Hi, Karen. What has been so long since I podcasted? I don't even know where I am.

You're in the basement. I am in the basement. See you on the show. You're in the basement. And it's funny, like the chair shot.com always use your head. So we're all by the way, we're chair shot.com at chair shot media. Go to the chair shot.com itself as well. That's where this show is hosted. That is the home of the Girl and Ask Man podcast. Continue, I'm sorry. Oh, I'm just, I'm back for like two weeks and then I go on another hiatus. That was two weeks. So I don't think the, the, the odoub parental units are traveling from the ill to come, to come visit. But I actually think that their, their, their travel is going to fall in such a way where I'm not going to miss a Girl and Ask Man podcast because they are arriving on a Wednesday and driving out on a Tuesday. So I think it works for you. I'm kind of sad because wouldn't it make sense on the Girl and Ask Man podcast for the

old man to be on the show? We don't need Papa, we don't need Papa down on the, he wouldn't know what to do. He wouldn't understand it. He'd be, he'd be frightened a little bit. I could be a little scared. And I don't know that he'd be the best of, he'd, I don't know if he'd be the most entertaining of podcasting. No. Triple host. Nah. I don't know. Okay. Maybe not the, he'd take him some, it'd take him a while to get warmed up, get used to it all. And Midwesterners getting warmed up takes like three hours. We don't have that kind of time. Not on a Tuesday. Which is when we record the show, we record the show on Tuesday night, you're listening to it on Wednesday. By the way, this is the Girl and Ask Man podcast. Patrick go down on night. If you don't, first of all, if this is your first time listening, welcome. We're excited because with the show description and the show name, we would attract now a different audience. Like if someone were to stumble upon this, it's a completely different audience who would have stumbled upon us a few months ago.

Patrick go down and I are best friends of, we blew through 20 years without even no word. Right. The fact that it was 20 years. Over 20 years now and have been podcasting since 2011. So 15 years, we did talk about that when that passed. Primarily about professional wrestling. And then a few months ago, we decided to shift gears because our best shows are when we didn't talk about wrestling. And now this is the Girl and Ask Man podcast. So we talk about issues, things in our lives, things in the world. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's serious, but it's always going to be some form of beneficial to you, the listener, at least I hope so, because that is our goal. That is our goal. We're not here to change the world. We're just here to make it a little bit better through the art form of podcast. It's not like we're going to stop talking to each other. If we're not, yeah, you might as well listen to it. Right. Like this podcast, they go, we ain't going to worry. It's 15 years. Yeah, I know. We'll just have, we'll just have hiatus as every now and then and we'll figure that out. And I don't know if we don't have to have a hiatus.

If you don't need a hiatus here in the next few weeks, we might be able to string a few together. Who knows anything could happen. It's not in the middle of Patrick goes out. Who knows. We just, I don't even in bandwagon nerds committing to a Wednesday podcast or sorry, a Tuesday recording for a Wednesday podcast. I should be clear. But yeah, it's just life happens. Those how how are you? How are you doing over there? Like like in what way? Well, some of the things that used to tie up the Greg Tomarko show, you know, now the grown ass man podcast are like, I don't know that I'm going to get text being like, I can't, I know I got to pick up such and such from dancing. Well, yeah, there's no picking up second such. So the next is it's the nest is empty. So let me tell you a story about the nest being empty that I need plan on talking about

today, but you reminded me. No, no, this is good. This is a good story. Well, a couple weeks ago, less than two weeks ago, I saw an ad on Facebook and I signed up for it. I told the wife about it. She thought it was cool. It was a no, no, we're not opening an only fans. Don't. Can't do that to other people. And she was excited about what we signed up for them. We forgot. And then last Wednesday, I got the reminder email. I sent him the screenshot and I was like, we still doing this because her school that she's a principal love is a good four-minute drive away. So you got a plan for that. You got to be somewhere by six. You got a plan for it. We had to be somewhere by six last Wednesday. So we pulled it off. We did it. It got in a work. I worked until right before it's time to leave and hopped in the car, drove out, out just to the movie theater. And we got to see for the first time in our lives a screening. And I've never been part of a screening before. And it was quite the adventure being part of a movie screening. So I had to sign an NDA when we got there.

So I can't tell you the movie. I'll tell you off air. Movie was good when it comes out next year. I'll talk about it. But it was. So you were like a test audience soon, right? Did you have to like come back? Yeah, that's the best way to go. Test screening. Yeah. So we signed up for it. It gave us a little three or four cents description. Try to search Google, try chat GPT. It kept suggesting the Brad Pitt movie that comes out next week or couple weeks from now with the dog kept suggesting that and we're like, this matches half the description, but not the whole description. And this movie's coming up. And it said we'd have to answer a few questions afterwards, right? So we did. Then when I get the confirmation, the amount also tells us we're going to get a free movie ticket for our participation in this. So this was free and we get a free movie ticket to Harkins, which is our favorite movie theater in the mason. So we go, we get there at six like we're supposed to. And as we approach the building, we see some people lined up outside of the bill.

And they don't there's no ticket. In fact, you're not supposed to bring your cell phone in with you. According to the confirmation email, everybody did accept the wife and I. But I'll talk about that. You grew followers, you. So it was our first time. I don't want to get kicked out. I want to keep doing this. So they scan the back of our driver's license is what they do. And then you sign the NDA on this person's phone. And then we go in and they did say they'd set up the ropes. And so we had to like partition our way through. So when say night at a movie, there's a reason why they do these on Wednesdays and why they move with you. There's cool. Yeah. Nobody fucking there. And so we go through the line. We get to go in, we get our seat. We did notice they take you through this line and they actually have the phone containers where you put your phone in the pouch and they lock it up and you get it on lock. So they have those. So in the future, I don't have to leave the car on the truck. I can write the phone on the truck. I can bring it. So going to the theater, it's in the big Sinnoh one is what it's called, the big giant theater and every kind. And we pick our seats because we got there early. That's another reason why I get there early is because you get to pick your seats because

it's first come for a service and the seat. And I did notice some seats were blocked off and they were blocked off with a specific entertainment company name that I never heard of before. And one of the concession lines was blocked off. It said VIP and had the same logo for this entertainment company name, which I'm assuming I looked it up. It's like a production marketing company. They probably bring people in for early reviews and things of that nature because I did see a guy walk in where a suit carrying a bag. Who knows? So we get our seats all of that side note out waiting for food. So so we get there. We get our seats. We've like almost an hour to kill at this point a little less. Maybe I think it was like six to one. We started set. But you got to get the real side go. I get our drinks. I get all that and I'm waiting for the food. Think about Harkin's theaters and they fill in the food. And as I'm waiting for food, this guy's like, what's your number? I was like, all my food number is 269, 259. I was like, oh, you're like 10 ahead of me. I was like, it doesn't work that way. It's different. It's where. And then going in this passes and same guy just looks at me and goes, are you Craig

DeMarco? Oh. And I'm like, and as you know, we've talked about it. Oh, doubt into Marko or not. I'll realize things. And I'm like, yes, I am. He has gone to IZW wrestling events and has seen me talking in the ring doing the welcome. He knows the net will warrior is a yes, it's worked with the money. He's had a good little conversation there. Then my food was ready. And so I went back and then and then right before the movie because I'm notorious, I will not sit through a movie without using the restroom. Just one month. So right before the movie, I'm like, I'm going to run to the restroom because at this point, I've had almost my entire drink. I think I did get a reason. It's a routine mistake. I hate to say. You do drink diet, coax, I get your job though, if I do recall. Any beverage really, any zero calorie beverage. We were so excited we forgot to bring our loyalty cups to the theater. So we had to actually buy the drink. So that was a lesson in rationing for me for this one.

So I go to use the restroom, I'll come back from the restroom and I hear this guy. Craig. There's a go as we've talked about on these podcasts and everything else. I was more heavily involved in our churches, church, I was the lighting guy. The creative arts pastor who was there was ran into me at this movie theater. He now works at GCU, Grand Canyon University. He's a corporate chaplain is the name, which is probably the most accurate name for a religious position. But he super nice to chat with him for a few minutes, but he was trying to use the restroom. And the movie was going to start, I hadn't seen him in probably a decade. It's been over decades since we left that place. So and he got fired before that. All right. And and so, okay, aside to the aside, you're ready for this story. Oh my god, this is a story. This is a story of favorite stories on the planet. We got branches upon branches. We are. We need the TVA for this conversation. It is the TVA, right? I got there right. Yes.

Okay, good. Very acidity. Yes. So years ago, the church that I was a lighting guy at also hosted my son's elementary school's Christmas concert. It might have been the end of the year concert. I don't know. But we go and we get there and they're like recruiting us to help. Like they didn't arrange for any video lighting, whatever, but we all kind of had kids that went there. So several of us are filming and I'm running lights and the lights are easy, right? It's just the lights. We're doing the super production that we did. My son even has speaking part of one point, but we're all on the headsets, right? Everybody was on headsets that they were talking here. And so the art teacher, they gave out some awards to some different awards. And so the part of the arts. And so even though this was music, there are different teachers. And the art teacher goes up there to give out awards. And this same pastor, the creative arts pastor, is on headsets with us and everything. And his kids go to the school, went to the school. They're all older now. And she gets introduced.

She comes up on stage. Her name is Miss Ortega. Miss Ortega, Latin American woman. Oh, very attractive. Where it's very tight clothes, but appropriate for working with small children. Goes on the stage, gets where they start talking. We have the two big video boards, whatever. Pastor of church married three children through the headsets. All of a sudden goes, oh, Miss Ortega. And then we're all just silent. And the only headsets is silent. And we're just kind of like, who's going to say something? And then the same pastor who said, oh, Miss Ortega realizes what he just said with probably seven or eight of us here. Again, it just goes, we're all friends here, right? And we all agree to never never speak of the Miss Ortega. Never speak of this again. Incident again, until probably 13, 14 years later. So that's the aside to the aside. So anyway, they come in. Somebody introduces the movie. They explain a few things to you. Have you ever been to a test screening?

Not for a movie now. You would love it, for sure. I think I really think you would. Oh, yeah. I was a little bit of self-aware. I'll send you the link. And I'm sure they do it here. They do it everywhere. They tell us that we're literally one of the first audiences to see this movie. And they even tell you like, there may be parts of the film that aren't finished. Like there may be some of the music choices might not be the new final music choices. There could be some light correction, color correction needs to be done. I only notice something at the end. And the opening song and the closing song didn't really fit for me, which actually put my feedback. And he was like, and this is the name of the movie. And he gives you the name of the movie and it starts. There's an opening, whatever. Obviously no preview. There's no closing credits. There's the closing credits where you see like the name of the producer and stuff, but there's no scrolling closing credits at the end. And then there's a little phone under our chair, which I noticed coming in. And we had to fill out this quiz. It was like a 30 section, a 30 question quiz about the movie.

And it was everything like, would you recommend this? What were the three best things or the three worst? How familiar were you with this actor actress before this movie, things like that? And it had a few names in it, not gonna lie. Like it did have some names. That's the, and that's the cool thing as well. You're watching this movie. You don't know what the movie is. You don't know who stars in it. Every time somebody shows you're up, you're like, is that, well, that could be this person. Maybe that's, oh, that's definitely it. And so you're watching it. And you're like, I saw this person on Yellowstone or I saw this person in these movies. And so that was a cool aspect of it as well. Occasionally, you know how you go to a movie and you won't know somebody was in it. You might because you're the bandwagon nerds guy. But I go give you an example. We saw the week before he man came out. I saw the movie with Hugh Jackman in the sheep. Can't remember the name of it now. Yeah, the sheep detective. The sheep detective. Yes, but way better than it should have been. It was a really good movie. Yeah, it was, it was held in the high regard.

Yeah. But Nicholas was a gasoline. What's the name of the guy with plate he man? Yeah, I don't remember his name. He's the bad guy in sheep detectives. Spoilers. Sorry, it's been out for a while. So he shows up. He shows up as like a reporter at whatever in the beginning. And I'm seeing this movie with my daughter. And I turn her down like, it's fucking he man. What's he man doing in this movie? And like I hadn't seen he man yet, but I recognize him. We're like, it's he man. It's just that surprise when you don't expect someone to be in a movie. And then you're like, oh, that guy. It's all like Kevin Hart showing up at Hobbs and Shaw hilarious because no one knew he was in it. But little things like that. So. So we see the movie. But we fill out everything and then we go, they give us a free movie pass for next time. And the home way home were like this was amazing. Like I don't think it's a movie we would have chosen to see just based on the premise and the previews were what they would have been. But now we will definitely see it when it comes out. Because now it's like, because now you want to see what they did.

Would they have changed anything? Because sometimes the movies will come at a test screening and they'll cut out entire characters. I think. And you always hear about it, but you can't quite fathom how it would have been otherwise. And then music choices and things like that. This movie has a dog in it that's as far as I'll go in terms of violating my NDA. It's a big dog movie. But it was, it was just a great experience. I cannot wait to do it again. Like literally. Good. We'll do it again soon as it's readily available. So I highly recommend. I'll send you the link to the company that does it because I know they're all over the country. And I think you guys would enjoy it. You have to be in a certain age range. So like you could bring a little low down. Even if the movie was, now maybe some other movies they would let you bring children. But this one, it was definitely like a dog. I want to say it was like, Drone on total like 54 age range or something like that. Yeah. It was very, very specific. And I don't know if they're all the same or if they're different.

But yeah, highly, highly recommend doing that. So to answer your question, that's, that's, that's, that's the, the, the answer to what's new that I didn't even expect to answer today is, um, let's all talk. I'll say I'll say I'll say I'll have fun. So yeah, it was the most random thing. Great for the movie theater, right? They sell all these, all this food. Right. I think we're going to sell otherwise. Um, a whole lot of fun. And, and you could tell they had some volunteers working because there's one guy in charge who would be like talking to the girl who was monitoring the rows because she, because at one point he goes up to her and he's just like, make sure people are sitting close each other because we're going to be full. Like we're going to be a capacity like all this stuff. Um, yeah. Like highly, highly, highly recommend the experience, especially for someone like you and the things that you do. Oh, yeah. I would. And it is totally one of those things that I would 1000% give behind in, in person. It's been it.

You would. You absolutely would. And you can go by yourself. And I'm going to tell you how many you're in a common. I'm sure they overbook these things because it is free. Yeah. So, you know, there's a no show rate that that's pretty high. I can tell you as a wrestling promoter, which we talked about on occasion, when I do the free event versus when I do the paid events, the no show rate very different for the free event. Oh, I bet. I bet. Like I will tell you right now, more tickets are claimed for the free event than we have chairs. And it still seems to work itself out. Hey, and you're like, I'm not even, and you're not even worried about it. Because we literally tell them why because we do it in groups. When we give away the tickets for the free event, like if it starts at eight o'clock, we have a group that can enter at 630. We have a group that can enter at 7, we have a group that can enter at 730. So you have to claim them early and then you come in and that helps distribute the people and all of that. But I did that the first time because those tickets started moving away faster than I expected. When you announce something is free, people like to gobble those things up.

So less and learned, I guess. But yeah, go see if go see a movie screening. I'll give you the details off air and you can check that out. So that's the answer to your question about what's been what's been going on. Not even. Not even. I know. I know. To the point where I can't even remember the things I did want to talk about after after sharing that story. I just saw something about what I've been up to. I know that was part of it. Well, that yes. I mean, the things that I want to talk about. You've got to know what we were going to start with. I messed up the whole flow. And then we were going to. Oh, I remember what I want to talk about now. Is it the busiest or is it the second busiest? Which one is the busiest? It's the busiest. I would miss the busiest. It's yeah, I would the month of August is the busiest month of the year for what I do, followed closely by the April May, like April the May closing out the year, sort of time.

Those who don't remember or don't know, one of the biggest projects that my office and that I am a part of is planning the move in to residence halls for approximately just south of 14,000 on campus students at the University of Massachusetts. And the majority of those students get moved in through a centralized check-in process that our department organizes where we split the campus literally in half. I am one of the, I am the lead for one side of campus where I am sitting out in the middle of a football stadium with everybody's keys on that half of campus. They come to our location where we check them in remotely from the stadium. They take their car loaded with stuff queued up until there's a spot in further building open and then we allow them through to be unloaded by professional movers before they park

their car and go back to a room and just have to unpack. And it has become a very big part of our institution. It is considered a signature program for the school and it is one that we take a lot of pride in. It takes away three days of my life every year. It takes away more than three days of your life. It does. The planning part, yeah. The planning of it all and getting it all that laid down and the infrastructure and the work that it takes to get a campus is, you know, we're a research one institution. You know, we're not as big as an ACC school or anything like that. So we're still, you know, 20 plus thousand, 30 plus thousand total students strong, less than 30, 20 in the neighborhood of 20 with our other programs, graduate schools and PhD programs and all that. You know, moving in that much of an on campus population takes a lot of work with other,

you know, members of the community like local local law enforcement to help with traffic and all the, every campus office seems to have a role to big operation on it. And it does. It takes a lot of work and those three days though where we actually do the moving end of the students like those are 3 30 AM wake up calls for five, you know, and working until five plus cleanup. So long three days to get that done. And I will say it's nice that we have it down like because last two days, I texted Patrick go down and was like, what is this to what we're not doing? What's the verdict? And he was like through 30 wake up call, all arms are reset. And I was like, yeah, you're not, you're not doing this show. So which I knew, but again, it was all of a place. So that's the setup. So everything, how does it turn out? Are there high stress moments for you?

Are there anyone that want to murder like where we are? This year, this year, families were surprisingly good for the most part. Like every year, like you're going to run into somebody. But I do think, I think my favorite this year was there was a mom who kept trying to explain to me how my own operation work. And was like, that's not how we move in. I'm like, I'm telling you as the person you help plan this. That's the guy in show. And this is what's going to happen. And she rolled her eyes at me and I'm like, lady, I'm telling you, like I know what I'm talking about. You do not know. I think the high stress, you know, I was talking about the setup of the build up. The high stress this year was turning over our check-in system that we've been using for years and years. We started utilizing a new program, a new application, a new software.

And all, like there was, so when you show up to check in with us, we ask every student, and I know it's our cake. To print out what we call a boarding pass. Now this boarding pass has a QR code on it that we can scan. Why we don't just bring it up on screens and scan it up screens? I don't know. We're not there yet. But this physical piece of paper, the boarding passes, we had to transition this away from our old system into the system. And a week and a half, we're maybe was two weeks or so. We're getting close. And we're doing testing. And we've got nine boarding passes. And in the first one hour session, we tested one boarding pass. Because everything broke and it was not functioning right. And so we are having like next level panic attacks. Now, our IT team was phenomenal. And every, I true story, every single issue that we ran into with that first go around

was fixed a day and a half later. Nice. It was a lot of small things here and there. Now, that doesn't mean that all the problems went away. We did have an issue where some folks who were moving in on my side got a boarding pass that told them to go to the other side. We had to fix that. That was interesting. But on the whole, the real stress of moving is making sure that everything is ready for moving. By the time you get to the days itself, it's the mob who doesn't think you know what you're talking about. And though, we promised them that, yo, your stuff is going to get unloading. You're not going to have to lift a finger. Well, I did it last year. How did you move in last year? Did you do it on your own? And you do it with a... There was a dad who wanted me to know that he... So you only get to take one vehicle up to the building to get unloaded because we have so many people. The dad, as he is driving through his vehicle a second time around, was like, I thought it was meant to be one trip per...

Or one vehicle per trip through. Okay. I'm like, where did you get that idea? Well, your language is very confusing. I was like, no, it says one car per student period. Not per trip. There's no extra language. Well, it's not clear to me. Well, unfortunately, that car full of stuff is dissidently. You know, nothing exciting. I was disappointing that nothing is exciting. You're disappointed now. I'm sure you weren't disappointed at the time. Well, I mean, I had a dad one year that thought he could get his way. The two car thing or the multiple trip thing is what gets parents. Like, they hate that. And I just, dad, he was some sort of law enforcement who, like, got out of his car and showed me his badge. As if that suddenly made him allowed to, like, go back. And I'm like, dude, the answer's no. Like, just, just no. I've been told that I mean, I'm uncaring, that I just don't listen, that my customer service

is terrible because, you know, I hold the Y. Who was the point of the badge? I don't know. I don't know why he flies. What was he an officer of? He, I don't remember what, like, level of law enforcement was. He was like a county, something or other. Like, he was probably not the county or it. Yeah, not local, nothing like that. Like, I don't know what it, I did not read his badge. But it freaked the students out because the students were like, oh, my God. I was like, well, what's he going to do? A recipe for holding up our rules. Like, there's, what rules that I break by following the rules? There's no risk here for me. This is just, you know, an angry dad. But that's why he showed the badge. That reaction that other people gave you is why he shows the badge. Right. This is, I'm about to make a terrible generalization. He's a horrible officer of whatever he is. If he is flaunting that badge around trying to get, oh, yeah, yeah, I try to get his way. He is what you will see on news reports of abusing power.

Like that is 100% what that person is. And I am generalizing him and I am unfairly categorizing him. And I completely own the fact that I'm doing that. No, that's fair. And I mean, when I, I always think about, because inevitably at some point you get yelled at by a parent. Like it just happens. Like you're going to yell at a parent and you worked in a higher ed at the parental level here and there where you had to have conversations with the parents. And everybody in our field has been screened out by a parent. And the thing that I always have to remind myself, even with the dude flashing the badge, they're reacting to a situation caused by their student more times than not when they're with us. They're taking it out on me, because I'm standing in front of them. But they're not really mad at me. They're mad at their student who is a dumbass. They're mad at the student, the multi-year student, because it's never the freshman. Freshman follow the rules the first time around,

because they don't want to screw it up. They feel like on that first day, anything they don't do correctly is going to fuck their whole college life. So they're going to show up on time. They're going to have their boarding pass. They're going to have their new ID there ready to go. It's the sophomore junior senior that does things like, I have my own car on campus. And I'm going to send mom and dad with my ID to check in and take my room key, because they'll just check my parents in while I park my car. And then they're baffled. When we pull their parents over and tell them, we can't legally give you a key to a room that's not yours. It's literally like giving somebody's house key away. You have to wait for your student to be here, even though I believe that you're mom. Like I 100% don't think you're a stranger. Have to give it to the student. And so your student can figure out their way here by getting either car going through the line,

or we will wait for them. And many of them, I kid you not great, will walk from parking lots across campus to our check-in location rather than all offer a golf cart to go pick them up. They'd rather walk, right, then take that, because they think it's some sort of like public shaming to be riding on the golf cart. Or they don't want to take their car for fears losing a parking spot that's still going to be available when they come back, because the parking lots outside of our overflow are not full. It's hilarious. And then they're like, oh, I totally thought I could do that. I should have known better. I'm like, yes, you really should have. Really good. Didn't we get the should have known better? Should have known better was one of our potential show titles. Last was. Yeah, when you back, you already lost that bit. Are you riding down show title lists? Oh, yeah. I'm not even minding on you. OK, I didn't know if you were living the gimmick, as they say. I am up to nine options right now.

It was a little slow early, because I was so into the story about the movie screen. But it was a great story. So yeah, and that's the thing is the only other big stress for me is that Friday, which is our last day, I told you this, we close at five. Now, the way this works is I have this tent set up outside of our football stadium. And then there is a large parking lot directly adjacent, which is where vehicles queue up before they're ready to move. And we have these. We have rows of cones and a frames with all the different buildings and places where people need to go. The athletic department had scheduled a pep rally at the football stadium at 6 p.m. with gates opening at 5.30 p.m. for students. I still, I had to clean up our space with my students by 5.30 p.m. So I have 30 minutes to clean up our operation.

Even starting ahead of time, I did not make it before guggles of first year students were lining up to check in. Because of course, you can tell them gates for doors open at 5.30. They start strolling in at 4.45. So I may or may not have nearly hit a student in my car. And as I was exiting the stadium through the back exit, I nearly hit our chance. Because it's a blind gate. So like, I'm coming from one way. I can't see a car coming in the other way until like you're almost there. And he came rolling through and we made eye contact. And my supervisor, supervisor, when I told her this story today, she was like, Kenny, I did. I was like, it all thinks so. She was like, where are you wearing your moving hat? I was like, I might have been. Because I have a very distinctive Nick Saban style strolling hat with a beautiful maroon band.

Well, it used to be maroon. That baby's been through so many movements. She's more of a pink color. But it's still a UMass logo. And people are like, why haven't you replaced a hat? They don't sell it anymore. And I can't find it. Like, I can't find one like, no, I have. Amazon gave me, Amazon gave me Alabama, Texas A&M, for basically all of the SEC. So you need it for the school too. I wanted it for the school. I really wanted it for the school. Because that's why I bought it in the first place. I remember seeing it at the campus bookstore during a move out. And being like, I want that. I need that for all my moving needs. And it's become my thing. I guess that's my moving gimmick. Great. So the gimmick. Between that and I've lost about 12 pounds. It's been a good couple of weeks. So go team. They're all moved in. We did. Of course we are. One of my students did, I have to investigate this tomorrow.

Moved in somebody who's been academically dismissed into what was supposed to be their fall assignment, what was now a newly occupied double way to other residents. I got a call from the dean of students. I was on that one. That's never good. Oh, there you go. Yeah. Somebody getting fired, Greg. I will say this as someone who has been to college, lived on campuses, was involved in housing residential life as a student, and had to run moving for his own building because I was a hall director as a senior in college. And then went into it and then graduate school and then professionally. They have improved a student move in 10 fold since I was in that world. Oh, God. Even when I, yeah, same with me. Like 10 fold. Even when those of you out there who might have children who are listening to this, well, hopefully if you went to college, you remember what it was like. It was a nightmare and it is just, I've done it now at Nebraska. I've done it at the University of Arizona as a parent and a student.

Do they do like a similar system? Like a, do they do like a similar sort of deal? Or so the check-in for my daughter, I believe, was done at the building. Okay. But they had the cards. She brought everything up. And I mean, it was done one car load again. That's why I didn't go down with that because two reasons. Number one, you could only take the one car load. So wouldn't have even mattered because we would have had a park, say the hotel, switch over. And number two, I married a woman that when it comes to cleaning and anything under the umbrella of cleaning, you just stay out of the way. Yeah. And so that's what, you know, we call her Hurricane Holly. So that's where. Dude, my, my, this is how dad is the same way. Like I remember three weeks into when we first moved in together, we're in my apartment, we're watching something on the couch

and she just gets up. She's like, I can't, I can't do this anymore and just cleans the whole fucking house. And I remember this, this was the moment that I knew I was in for something. She tossed me a rag at one point and was like, can you wipe down that, that table? And so I take, you know, take the pledge, clean off the, this is a wooden tabletop, clean off the wooden tabletop. And I'm like, all right, now what? And she's like, that's not clean. And I'm like, what do you mean? She was like, you didn't clean the legs. And I'm like, what do you mean you didn't clean the legs? The legs are still dusty, you gotta clean them too. I was like, okay. And there it is. Was that the birth? Was that the birth of K? Was that more? No, K came a long later. K came a long in my podcast, in the podcast. Yeah, so I really, it was really what it came all up. I mean, you have your own musical sound bite now that we're not gonna play in this episode.

For reasons, there's reasons why we're not. There's reasons, I believe you. We're not gonna play it. So, and if I could find that reason, I would tell you that reason. But I can't even find that reason. So. Is people fucking soothing? No, I was hoping it was the, maybe it's this one. Let's start that one. Oh, it's this one. No, this one either. No, this is good podcasting here. To now, like, on a, not now. You're on a mission. Not on a mission. This is me getting bold. Here it is. No, it's not dirty. It's been removed. I'm upset now. Literally doesn't exist. Oh well, hardly new. You had it for a couple. I did. It's fine. So, I should have known better. That's good. There we go. It's a good one right there.

There's the other one we're talking about. Oh, so I came to the cake. There you go. I can stop them whenever I want to. Starting them is what takes a little bit longer on the older. You know, the timing's been better today. I haven't played that many. I know, but it's felt relatively seamless. You know what I mean? Like I get it. You know, I do in the rapids. You know, two in the rapid fire thing like that you like to do. I know. And that's all right. That's OK. We've talked for 40 minutes about what's going on in our world, man. That's what the show is sometimes. That's the show is sometimes. So here's what we're going to do. We're going to go to commercial. We're going to come back and then we've got a, I got a, I got today's story. Today's story that came up. I don't want to tell you guys about it. And that'll take us to. And then I do have a grown ass moment of the week that we can talk about as well. And a lot of a lot of good things there. So chill for a moment. And we will come right back with the second half of the program.

So my daughter's got off to college and so a few days into her college career, maybe even before her first day of class, she has now finished up two weeks of classes. So I was just there this past weekend. That's the thing about her only being two hours away. I was her birthday this weekend so we went back down for her birthday. I get a picture, I get a text from my wife.

It's a picture of a dude and picture of the dude is like, it's from his social media. So it's like four pictures I can agree. And it's like, this is who your daughter's having lunch with tomorrow and it's just a dude and I became and I'm a dad of a daughter of my only daughter, of my youngest daughter, of she's a princess, she's a daddy's girl, she's all this. So my reaction to the wife was someone's gonna die. He's a music major, I'm not worried, but yeah, it turned out just fine. Oh, Eddie's super shy and laughed things and so I'm okay with it. But yeah, first reaction was, who do I, I guess it's time to go kill somebody. So it's, you know, it's so nice. It's a dad, it's a nice, it's very nice. It is. Your daughter will make good decisions. I believe in the second little lowdown.

I get a little lowdown. Hello D, sorry, a little debarco, little low, there is no second little lowdown. I'm still recovering from my, no, I'm just kidding, I completely screwed that one up. But no, second little debarco. So Patrick go down years ago. He was the kind of person that would say the joke of like when you talked to him, he would ask you, how's your wife and my kids? Like that's Patrick out or the Patrick would go down back then. So. Tunes, you were the time you called me and I just answered, do you remember what I answered? I yelled it into the phone when I just yelled your mother's a whore. That was our grown ass man relationship back in the day. And that was exactly I could respond to it when I answered the phone the first time that way. Is he just laughed? I can't remember who I did it in front of, but.

Who knows? Who knows back then? That's like a whole lot. Oh, such good shit. I don't have any great grown ass man moments right now. Like, I know not really, yeah, health accountability. That's my grown ass man moment of this. I think I think we talked a while back. I got a bad diabetes appointment. Yeah. About a month or so ago, I actually, I think I'll do back in the doctor to the doctor in like a couple of weeks, but I mentioned offhandedly, I lost like 12 pounds. I didn't get back on track. Right? So went from like two, two bills to 180 something right now. So that's usually a good sign. That the boy's sugar is probably gonna drop as good. He'll stop. No, stop. When do you find out? It's like you're right before, right after my folks leave. So it's like it's somewhere. I'll get a text reminder when it's coming.

Yeah, but I get those. It's just it is anything to keep me from doing a GLP one, sir. I don't trust that of Zipic business. I don't know man. Because what you're on it, you're on it or life. Like they tell you that you're on it or amber. So I will, I want none of that. Therefore I quit drinking. Should I go into the fact that GLP one is at a former testing then the vaccination for COVID ever did? Should I go into that or should I know? I don't care. It's not the side effects that are being pulled out of some of the GLP ones, not all of them because it's become such a, it's become such a fast-fed medication. That's the thing. It is. And from what I understand, for the wrong reasons in a lot of what I've been told, getting off of it, like you literally have to have a plan. And like, yeah, it's really hard. And so I get and I've known people that have gone off of it and one person specifically and then went back on it,

like it's it was strong and it might still be. I think it's an addiction. Oh, yeah, I don't want that. No, you don't, you don't want that at all. No, all right. My story, my second story of the podcast, happened to Debt and it was, so I was off last week, I was off on Thursday and Friday. And then of course, my boss basically was like, you need to take time off because I don't. And then we were chatting, she'd called me the Friday before, asked me about an open ticker or something like that that I was telling her about. She was like, take it management where I work, it's going crazy. And so we're talking about that. And my colleague of mine had taken a couple of days off. And I was like, I need to take some time off too because the counter is going to get crazy. And she was like, I was like, I haven't taken time off for not for a reason, like to move a child for the Friday before a wrestling event and anything like that. And she was like, take off next Thursday and Friday. It'll be a five day weekend because we already have the Monday off of it.

So I ended up taking off Thursday and Friday and had that a time off. So today I'm back and I did log on last night to clear out my 170 emails and all this other stuff too. Because I don't want, I log on every Sunday to clean everything up and start fresh. It's like a, it's not a bad thing. And it's fine. My due, this conversation I had, this conversation I had that Friday afternoon was at 3.30 and it started with the question of like, I didn't call you after logged off for the day, did I? Like, like, and I worked till five. So, and it wasn't a bad thing, had I? She was just making sure I was still working. That she didn't bother me if I hadn't stopped working. Like, she encourages us to really, okay. Which is gonna make the story even more prevalent here in the moment when I say that. So today I get back, I'm working around 10 something, I get a message from my boss. She was like, you know, are you free? And I'm just like, great. What, what happened while I was gone? What happened? What client complained? Did I forget to do something?

Did I do something wrong? Like, what happened? And I was like, yeah, I'm on a, I want a car right now, I'll be off in a few. And then, no, I just got enough of calls. Like, yeah, I just got off this call, I'm free. And a few minutes later, she calls one. And she's like, I need to talk to you. And I'm like, what the fuck happened? What did I do? And she's like, she's like, but I don't want to. I was like, what? What, like, I'm not gonna say her name, but I was like, and like, like, and then she's covering her face. And like, looking at me like through, and she's like, I'm scared to tell you this. And I'm like, or is the company going under? Like, what's going on? And so finally, she paused for a second. She's like, I resigned. And I'm like, motherfucker, like, seriously. So my boss, I have been with this person since, when I got, we just told the story before, where I've been laid off five times in my life. Like, it hasn't been, it's been part of the journey.

It's been part of the journey. And one of those times it landed me at a school, based on, or someone else who had worked with previously, got me in at this school, and that's how I encountered the woman who's my current boss. She was a VP over the operation that I was a part of. And I didn't know I had any impact on her anything, and did my job and all that. And then I left that role to go to a different role in the same organization, mainly because it had a $16,000 pay raise. And it was a management position, like it was what I was going to be. And I took the job, I informed my boss, I informed my boss. And I got a call from her, and she's like, first question out of her mouth. Did I do something wrong? Is that what you're leaving? I'm like, no, I'm leaving, because her pay me $16,000 more. And she was like, if I got you a role at some point, that equal to pay what you come back, I was like, yes, yes, I would. So fast forward like a year and a half later, that position gets eliminated. They happen to have the old position

that I had left to go in there open. So they put me back into that role because they needed somebody, they knew I knew what I was doing, but what a course it was a significant picture. They almost tried to pay me less than what they paid me the first time. That was a foreign conversation. When I was saying, you know, this is less than what you're paying me before they were like, oh, so my first day back in that new old role, I get a text from this person. She is like, I have a position to open work. She had left the organization like I have a position open. Are you interested in hearing about it? I do. It's more money than I've ever made before, whatever. She pulls me in and we've worked together for years. And she gets every part of her arm, right? She calls it that blanks arm. There's several of us. And she said, if I really were coming with me whatever, and today she was like, I resign. She doesn't have a space, she's just resigning because she doesn't like it. And there's a lot of different reasons. And it's just like, it's, you know, my company has gone through a ton over the past couple of years. It was acquired. It was put on the umbrella with multiple other companies.

We were one specific product. Now we're a part of a company of like six different specific products. SaaS, which is software as a service, which is the industry that I'm in now. It's a crazy, it's very sales driven, just like, I mean, what I was in before was admissions driven. And so you're always having to deal with those outside constraints. And she was the one that would hold it all together. She was the one that was keeping the ship going, we're gonna be going. And so now I don't know how I feel about it. Like it's that she was the stability. She was always protecting her people, always having everybody's back like, and now it's especially dealing with sales. Because sales will sell things we don't even have ready to be sold to. And they'll tell them we can implement it in a month. And it's not even gonna be ready until like Q2 of 2020. So like this is, this is in Q2 of 2027 means April to June, people who are going to sell this. Of 2027, not September of 2020, 2026.

But sales will sell this to them. And then we have to have the conversation. And then it'll be our fault when the person's not happy about. And now that shield is going to be gone later this month. So it's just like a, it's a variation conversation to have. Because you're just like, what do you say? What do you do? I want her to be happy. This is the best place I've ever had by far. And I've had some good ones. And she sits at the top of the list through the good and the bad. Because there is good in bad, especially in the world that I work in. I don't, I haven't worked with a single person in this organization who hasn't royally fucked something up at some point. Like it's just the nature of the beast that will win. As our CEO says, and it's a very common business speak right now is, just it has been for the past several years, but a very common phrase in business is we're building the plane, we're flying the plane, we're building the planes we fly. Right people love to say that. And we're definitely down organization. So yeah, it's going to be interesting next little bit.

See what happens and see what direction things go in. And she was kind of the last person left of the old guard when we got acquired. Right. It's still like the acquisition. A lot of people came over. But since then they've kind of fallen off person by person, and she was kind of the last one. So then what does this mean for Craig Demarco in the company? Nothing. Nothing? Nothing at this point. No, it's not going to change anything with my role. The tree. Do you see yourself? Do you see self remaining in the company for the first seal? A future at least it sounds like. Yes. I do. I mean, this literally happened earlier today. It's it's eight o'clock my time now. So it hasn't even been 10 hours since I had this conversation. But and I worked most of that time and then did a fantasy football draft and then came on this podcast. So like I got a D in that fantasy football. Yeah, which means you're going to have a good team.

Um, I had a terrible team last year and won the league. So not this league, not the chair shot league, but my other like, so the puns house league, I can say that on here. No one knows what puns house isn't if they do good for them. Um, good for puns house for still existing, by the way, speaking of the websites from our past, uh-huh. Puns house is still a thing primarily used for drafts of many past and, um, including the cupcakes and bananas, football and other sports. And their baseball league they draft minor leakers. Oh, God. They draft prospects in their baseball league. Yeah, I know. Um, yeah, no, but NFL is just an and the NFL draft has done on the message board and takes a few weeks to do. And I like it that way. I'm not going to lie. So, um, yeah, lots of lots of fun in that regard. Yeah, I was the champion. My my six and eight, vicious and delicious, uh, for your wrestling fans out there. It's Scott North and both bag well. Um, my six and eight regular last season got me the last team in the playoff.

And then I just went on a run in the playoffs and won the league. So yeah. And the little tomorrow is going on year three in the league too. So look at him go. So it's a lot of fun here. Um, and he gets a he gets somebody from the Cardinals, those team every year. Um, so which is fine. Not wrong. That they do have some some draft worthy players. But yeah, I don't know what it means. I really truly don't know what it means. I have learned in life and and businesses that I work in, um, maybe being in a wrestling helps with this. I don't know. But sometimes you just got to kind of sit back a little bit and see how things are going to go and see how things play out and be ready for anything. So we, uh, we shall see. But yeah, it was, uh, not not what I expected to hear when I heard it. So yeah, well, don't really have a funny moment or a point in thing to, to, to top that one off though. Yeah, yeah. Sometimes, you know, the sun's still got to rise tomorrow. It'll be all right.

You know, you'll, you'll, you'll get it all worked out. Um, yeah, I had, I had no earth shattering job news. I got a lot of fault. Given what you just came off of, that's a good thing. No, I blew off some steam by watching, uh, watching some movies over the weekend. Uh, do you recall the 1990s, uh, kids movie classic, little giants starring Rick Moranis? I do. And, um, oh, God, Edo Neil, that movie, funnier than I remembered it. I don't know if it's because I don't know if it's because I was just in an immature place. That movie tickled me to death. Good. Like, there's a kid running with the football, kid chased by like a little dirty kid. He's right out of the football. You get chased. He's like, I'm going to die. I'm going to die. I'm going to die. It just, it's stuff like that made me feel made me feel here. I was like, Oh, yeah, I remember those. Ah, good underrated film, little giants, starring Rick Moranis,

Edo Neil and, and Edo Neil. Very good. Edo Neil playing what if Al Bundy was a true asshole? Like, that's basically the character he is in there because he's the, he's the big brother asshole football coach. Good stuff. That's, that's, it's a good role for God. Madden's in that movie. Yeah, it's true. Yeah. I was showing that in. I mean, I've seen is like, can I just tell you, to be is the best thing I've ever found in the land of streaming services? Because it's, because it's free. Yeah. So, so that starts right there. So you just got to know you're going to have that like I'm sorry. If you're, if you're looking to escape ads, to be is not for you. It's free. But here's what I've been watching on to be the original GI Joe cartoon. And the original Transformers cartoon. It has random ass movies like major league two. Sometimes I just want to watch a shitty major league movie, not the original. And so you watch major league two, it has back from us.

It had the little drowns. I just found yesterday I'm going to watch this with the little old doubt. They have the tales from the crypt show from HBO back in the day. Tells from the crypt. I used to love that show growing up. I can't wait to watch it. Can't wait to watch the verses that were made in the United States. And then that one weird season where they hopped over to Canada because that studio would take them. And we finished it off. But man, a life high. And I think the little of doubt will really like, I think you might like this. He likes the horror stuff, right? So yeah, he likes the horror stuff. And this is like horror comedy. A lot of levels, right? Because like the crypt keepers kind of funny. I think he'll enjoy it. He's very excited. A new Godzilla minus zero trailer dropped today. So we got to taste. Yeah, it's they're they're dropping it. Put that movie in IMAX. Man, like they're they're going a lot. It's the first Japanese produced film to be played in in film, Fry Max and played in IMAX theaters.

So it's kind of a big deal to them. Very nice. Yeah, looks looks great. Minus one was great. If you never saw Godzilla minus one, help me. I did not. It's okay. Not so easy. I don't need. So let's pick a show title. Patrick or Dow, despite me forgetting, we have 24 options, which I think last time we had 22. So we'll get to his. Yeah, you're getting worse. This is like sound bites, but worse. Yeah, I hate who knows who knows and you think it happened. That's number three on the list. Number one, I'm back for two weeks. Number two, we might be able to string a few together. Number three, who knows anything can happen. Number four, I am sure you weren't disappointed at the time. Number five, he showed me his badge. Number six, what was the purpose of the badge? Number seven, I mean I am uncaring. I just don't listen. Number eight, inevitably you get yelled at. Number nine.

Number 10, but it was a great story. Number 11, I may or may have, may or may not have nearly hit a student with my car. Number 12, can he identify you? Number 13, you just stay out of the way. Number 14, we call her Hurricane Holly. Number 15, not related to Hurricane Holly, and she cleans the whole Fing house. Number 16, that's not so nice. Number 17, it is nice. Number 18, I completely screwed that up. Number 19, how's your wife and my kids? Number 20, your mother's a whore. Number 21, don't really have a poignant moment for that one. Number 22, the signs still going to rise tomorrow. Number 23, tickled me to death and number 24. Sometimes I just want to watch the shitty Major League move. I mean, so sometimes I do just want to watch the shitty opinion.

And you can because you have to be, we all have to be first of all, you have to be. We all have to be. Yeah, I just I put the app on my television and checked it out. I tell you I watched WB Evolve. It's how I used to watch such underground back in the day and hi. All this stuff on too. I can't remember. Oh, I watched the NWA power on on TV. I know. You made that sound more excited than it is. There's a reason they're on to be. It's true. It's true. I WB Evolve's on to be. So it's it's there's a reason that's on to be. I think that's the name of the show. There's a reason it's on to. Like we can do that. Oh, my name's almost right now. God, we got to figure out a way to rain you in. So I can remember the options or you might, but you know what you might have to do because you type them. You should screen share the list after you read them all so that why I can remember.

Because it's all about me. Like what I share right now. There you go. Share right now Patrick. Go down there. Share with audio. Why not? I'm like, I'll play on you. I appreciate you. Oh, look at that. Without me, that is. So there you go. So so we've got. Yeah, yeah. I never will. You all that. That's not bad. You should have known better. I think it's just going to be on the list every week. So yeah, like that. That's that's kind of like can he identify you? That's a good one right there. How's your worry for my kids? Kind of funny. We'd get some attention, even though it's not a major stolen stolen from the movie. Major League. Look at that. Look at that. That is that is a line stolen from the original major league. Your mother's a horror was not. No, that's that's the fake jeopardy. Yes. Have a riddle for your Quebec. So I'm leaning more towards there's a reason it's on two beer.

There's one a little bit higher up. Can you scroll up a little bit? Of course I can. Of course I can. Oh, is here that or inevitably you get yelled at because I never believe you get yelled at as a good one. I think I think that's it. I think that's the winner. All right. And inevitably you get yelled at. It is that is the title of this week's show. Growing Asman podcast number four. Now if you ever had the courage to air this live, you could have shared that for for a live studio audience. We'll get there. We'll get there. So we got it. We got to string a couple of shows together first. I don't know. I say we'll get there and I'm trying to not even use the sites to record the show. So I know. I know. I told her maybe I shouldn't think I don't think it's that bad of a studio. I just think I don't learn how to use it, bro. I'll get there. I'll get today. It hasn't been bad. It's just when I played the model music under you speaking at the end of the show, that does not go well. He did out the word. Yeah. And so I either need to. So basically one of two things needs to happen. Either I need to figure some things out and maybe record a new version of that

with a much lower volume or number two, I seem to let some things go. That's a possibility as well. And I'm open to it. That's part of evolving. I guess how you evolve as a person. Yeah. Is it though? No. We just tell ourselves I'm a man. I'm 40. Like I look at Riverside and I'm like, why is everyone so fucking stupid? And also you're a man. You're nearly 50. Right? That's it's come out of the reason. I in this weekend, this will probably be a topic for next week's show. But this weekend, I am part of someone's day long 50th birthday. Some of the version. I can bowl in senior tournaments in two years. Look at that. I don't like that. How was that? Kicks him old man ass. So you need to do take advantage of that shit. Take advantage of it. All right. Until next time, he is Patrick Adaud at Wrestling Realist. To WRE STL NG R E A L I S T. There's no I in wrestling.

But there is one in real. Listen, there is one in Patrick for the Wrestling Realist Patrick Adaud. I'm not great to mark. Oh, 44. The show is at growing ass man pod. The website of course at Chershop Media. It's the Cherishad.com. Go there for sports entertainment and sports entertainment. You'll find all of it at the Cherishad.com. We thank you for listening.
