2:00
We hope you like starting your day with us as much as we like starting our day with you.
2:05
We're going to dig into Grayson Halton's fit on the Green Bay Packers.
2:09
But let's start with the player.
2:12
This is a six two and a half, 293 pound defensive tackle.
2:16
That would be light for the Packers and I understand that though at six two and a half, I think
2:23
that frame is more workable in terms of the density we've talked about with receivers
2:28
with corners for this Packers team.
2:30
He just turned 22 and was a captain at Oklahoma a 9.7 relative athletic score.
2:40
He was and is the kind of twitched up athlete with power with speed with agility that the
2:47
Packers tend to like at this position, nine sacks and 46 hurries.
2:52
The last two seasons combined.
2:54
The length is, okay, 31 inch arms.
2:57
He was according to the profile focus numbers and elite run defender, despite not being
3:04
And part of that is because he's extremely disruptive.
3:09
He will use speed to power to push offensive lineman into the backfield had a 10.4 pass
3:15
rush win rate, which is well above average.
3:18
I like that he's a well proportioned body type.
3:21
He's not someone that's holding all the weight in his midsection or all the weight in his
3:25
He is well proportioned that that first step that I talked about.
3:29
That used to be the Javon Hargrave calling card.
3:32
That is the Devante Wyatt thing that they love so much that penetrating three technique.
3:36
The reason they wanted that for for Joe Berry's defense is the same reason you would want it
3:41
for Jonathan Ganon's defense.
3:44
89th percentile 10 yard split.
3:46
So you take what you see on tape that explosive first step.
3:51
It matches with the athletic profile.
3:54
He is explosive off the line of scrimmage and not just explosive like he's some quick
4:00
little jitterbug defensive tackle, which is not really a thing.
4:04
Anyway, but we're not talking about you know, some undersized Kalazia can see type player
4:09
six to and a half to 93 is a legit defensive tackle.
4:13
He is a forceful, violent football player.
4:16
He attacks blocks with force.
4:18
He makes tackles with force.
4:21
And that is what I love when I watch him on tape.
4:25
He might be my favorite defensive tackle in this class.
4:27
He closes down space.
4:31
What are the what is the testing really tell us?
4:34
Well, it stamps what we see on tape that when he sees the ball carrier, he closes like
4:39
the terminator like like a linebacker in space.
4:43
He is closing down that space.
4:45
He closes to the ball with burst.
4:46
That is one of the things that I think is really underrated about defensive players defensive
4:51
lineman, particularly.
4:53
Some guys are really quick off the ball and they get in the backfield and they're sort
4:55
of like, I don't know what to do.
4:57
And then they see the ball carrier and they're like, okay, let me go make the tackle now.
5:01
No, this guy wants to arrive with bad intentions.
5:04
He had this vicious pass, wrist wrap against Texas with explosive movement arm over, then
5:09
closed to archmaning who is probably going to be the number one overall pick next year
5:14
and is a terrific athlete for his size.
5:18
Now you're going to see him at times against the run against bigger bodies have some issues.
5:24
He got put on his ass by a Texas guard in that game as well.
5:28
Now you fast forward to the senior bowl.
5:31
He was a a record at the senior bowl.
5:35
He played his best football for me against the best teams.
5:38
And he gives really good effort.
5:40
This is sometimes an issue with defensive tackles.
5:42
They're not always giving you their A game all the time because it's a lot.
5:48
It's a lot to eat double teams and to lean on 320 pound offensive lineman all game.
5:53
And so their effort will wax and wane.
5:57
That's not the case.
5:59
Michael Parsons was was absolutely unequivocal.
6:05
You have to have players on this team that are going to give you effort all the time.
6:09
And so this is when I hear from people about like D'Angelo Ponds.
6:11
Oh, he's an effort, an effort, a high effort player plays with his hair on fire, violent
6:20
Grayson Halton is a really good football player at size and also has all of those things.
6:26
I don't think he played it to 93.
6:29
He looks more like 305 to me.
6:32
And the packers know that the teams know what he really played at.
6:36
And so it's possible he cut a little bit of weight.
6:38
Maybe he played it to 98 300 and cut some weight to go run fast and jump high.
6:43
Now he didn't do agility testing.
6:46
And I think on tape, you see there is a little bit of that, you know, he's a linear mover,
6:51
a straight line mover.
6:53
The agility moving side to side is not is not always where you want it to be.
6:58
He is someone who is like they trusted him to play on the edge though and be a path
7:04
Like that's not what what you want.
7:08
Just let him shoot gaps.
7:09
Just let him be an interior rusher.
7:11
I think there was some like I think he could have had more sacks.
7:14
Frankly, if they would have used him in past situations, the way they're going to use
7:17
him in the NFL, this is where I cashed out with him.
7:22
Halton, maybe my favorite defensive tackle in this class.
7:25
He's explosive, violent and aggressive.
7:27
He's still developing his hand usage and I'd like to see him get stronger in his upper
7:31
The issue using him using his hands to get off blocks could also be related to his arm
7:36
31 inches is to short, even for a defensive tackle.
7:39
But because he's so explosive, I just don't think it's a big problem for him.
7:42
He's the three tech who can be a one tech pass rusher in nickel and dime looks.
7:46
He's thought enough to play the run on early down than explosive enough to knife into the
7:50
So he is a modern three tech, you know the player that he reminds me of.
7:57
The guy that the packers just gave a two year contract to even at an advanced age for
8:05
He is someone exactly the type of player that Jonathan Ganon has deployed in the past.
8:11
And I think he is a terrific fit.
8:14
Despite the fact that his skill set is duplicative with Devon Tayyate and Javon Hargrave.
8:19
Let's talk about that fit though next on locked on Packers.

10:38
Not bad for a hobby.
10:40
And how meta helps over 35 million American businesses like Peter's grow at meta.com slash
10:49
Now on this packers team I would understand if you said but Peter they already have
10:56
Devonte Wyatt and Javon Hargrave that's true Devonte Wyatt is going into the last year
11:05
Are they going to give him an extension?
11:08
Are they going to pay him like one of the best defensive tackles in the league after
11:13
We've never seen him play at you know a top 10 top 15 level over the course of a season
11:20
because he's had injuries.
11:22
He ended the season hurt again and this is a continued theme with him.
11:30
He's also an older player like we talk about the age of Javon Javon Hargrave and you know
11:37
I think for good reason the packers actually went out and signed a 33 year old free agent
11:42
that's that's unusual for them.
11:45
But it's not like Devonte Wyatt is that much younger Devonte Wyatt turns 28 in just
11:53
So you're going to give him a contract for the next four years after that.
11:58
That's that's kind of the point at which the packers generally will go now we're all
12:03
It's why they don't give a lot of third contracts.
12:05
So basically what Devonte Wyatt would be at this point because he was an older first
12:11
Now at the time I think it was you know somewhat defensive.
12:15
I didn't love the draft pick at the time you may recall.
12:19
But you drafted 22 year old and then you give him a contract when he's 25 and then when
12:25
he's 27 28 29 unless he's an elite player.
12:29
The packers are usually like thanks but no thanks.
12:32
Now Brian Utikin said they were working on an extension for Devonte Wyatt.
12:37
I think the reason that he doesn't have one is because they're not going to give him
12:41
I think he's going to play on his fifth year option and they were going to say thanks
12:45
for the memories Devonte.
12:47
But that's going to be it.
12:49
And so you need a player like this in this front and the last time we saw this Jonathan
12:56
Ganon defense be really good in Philadelphia.
12:58
They had a ton of interior defenders who could get up field who could penetrate and disrupt.
13:05
Now they still needed and I still think they need a a run stuffing interior defender.
13:11
They traded up that Eagles team for Jordan Davis and still used linval Joseph right for
13:17
that Philadelphia team.
13:18
They still need that.
13:19
So the need for a DJ reader, a kaleis Campbell is still there and I don't think they're
13:25
going to find that guy in this draft.
13:27
I think they'll take one on day three, a big run stuffing nose tackle.
13:32
But I think they need two starters along their defensive front to be long term pieces
13:39
Those guys are not currently on the roster.
13:41
So in terms of what he does well, Jonathan Ganon is going to let him use his strengths
13:46
as a slanter as a gap shooter as someone who could run games up front that ability to
13:51
get up field and be disruptive is essential to this defense.
13:56
And there just aren't that many players in this draft class who can do it the way that
14:03
I think it would be a mistake for the Packers to go into this, this draft season and go.
14:09
Let's find a guy who can stop the run and hope he can become a penetrator to with an
14:16
I just don't think that makes sense.
14:18
This similar did not test at his pro day and I don't think it's going to make it to
14:22
Kaden McDonald at least based on the reports that I've seen and we're recording this on
14:26
the day of the Ohio State pro day.
14:28
I didn't see testing numbers for him.
14:30
I think he went through drills.
14:31
It doesn't look like he tested.
14:33
Maybe that causes him to be there at 52 because teams are a little bit more worried or they'd
14:37
rather take the edge rush or they'd rather take the corner of the receiver or the offensive
14:42
There's a lot of those guys in this draft.
14:46
I would rather have Grayson Hall in the anyway because I think he is that kind of disruptor.
14:52
I think he's someone who can give you everything you're looking for as a defensive tackle because
14:59
the most important thing a defensive tackle can give you is pass rush.
15:03
Now if he can't play on early downs, you have a problem.
15:07
That's why you need to go get a DJ reader.
15:09
But someone like Grayson Holton who is for my money, the best interior path like P woods
15:16
is in this draft class.
15:17
Kayla Banks is in this draft class.
15:19
I think the best interior pass rusher in this class that I've seen anyway is Grayson
15:26
And I know that there are other guys out there that that are intriguing.
15:32
But for the Packers, I think this is a fit where he can give you enough in the run game
15:39
as a splash run defender to be what you thought Devante Wyatt was going to be and isn't and
15:47
And I also think if you look at what Micah Parsons does for this defense, his ability to dictate
15:53
terms to opposing offensive line, you have to send to at Micah Parsons.
15:58
That gives you one-on-one opportunities for Grayson Holton even in the run game because
16:02
on first down, Micah Parsons is so athletic and so disruptive that even on first down
16:10
in the run game, you have to understand where is he and and be aware, either send extra
16:16
bodies or be running away from him.
16:18
Well, that gives more opportunities to someone like Grayson Holton.
16:22
I understand that for a defensive tackle, he is small for the Packers in terms of the
16:29
They have not used a pick on a sub 300 pound defensive tackle very often in the in the
16:37
Ron Wolf Ted Thompson Brian Udekin era.
16:39
It just does not happen very often early in drafts.
16:43
In this case, I think you have to make an exception because of the fit and because of the athletic
16:49
ability, because of the disruptiveness.
16:52
I would I am pounding the table.
16:55
This is the first defensive tackle where I go, this guy to me, if we didn't know anything
17:01
about the Packers draft history in terms of like the, and I don't know if they have a cut
17:06
But to me, he checks the boxes that you want.
17:09
He's a terrific scheme fit.
17:11
He can be a long term piece for you with three technique and then no tackle is just one
17:15
of those things where you can sign a linval Joseph, a DJ reader, even a Dolvin Tomlinson
17:22
and have him be that early down run defender for you or a day three player who develops
17:26
like DJ Slate and did.
17:28
It's so much harder to find true disruptors and look at what Milton Williams did for the
17:35
I think to me, that is the comparison or Javon Hargrave for the Eagles Milton Williams
17:42
But Javon Hargrave in that Jonathan Ganon defense, this is your Javon Hargrave.
17:47
This is your opportunity to get a guy like that.
17:50
I think for the Packers, it makes a world of sense, not, not just for this year, because
17:57
I think Halton could is, is going to potentially start for the Packers if they, if they drafted
18:01
him this year, because how many games healthy is, is Duponte Wyatt going to have?
18:06
And you'd like to keep Javon Hargrave fresh for third downs, because he's still a very
18:09
good interior pass rusher.
18:12
The more interior guys you have, that Eagles defense.
18:15
It wasn't that the edge rushers were superb phenomenal all pro guys.
18:20
It was the best career, it was a career year for Hassan Reddick.
18:25
But they had waves and waves of interior bodies to throw at you.
18:30
And that is just, that's just not something the Packers have.
18:33
They need bodies, period.
18:35
And I don't think they can be that picky, especially for someone that has the athletic tools
18:39
It's not like he's 280.
18:42
We're not advocating for anything like that.
18:43
We're talking about someone who looks to me, at least at like a legit 300 pounder and
18:48
has his physical abilities.
18:51
Man, that guy seems like the perfect fit for the Green Mip Packers to me.
18:55
All right, back with more this week on Goody's guys, we're going to get into some receivers
19:01
We're going to get into some running backs here soon, some more defensive tackles here
19:05
soon, some offensive lineman, a ton more as we head toward the draft.
