A busy day of NHL Trays leaves the sharks with an unprotected Euler's pick.
Your Locked-On Sharks, your daily podcast on the San Jose Sharks, part of the Locked-On
podcast network, your team every day.
Hello, welcome to a Locked-On Sharks, the premier hockey podcast covering your favorite
team of Bay Area.
My name is JD Young.
I'm covering the sharks since 2018, also the co-host of Locked-On NHL.
I want to thank you for making the Locked-On Sharks your first listen, probably part of
the Locked-On Network, the number one sports podcast network.
We cover your team every day, if you want to be in every day or are you to do, as just
follow along wherever you get podcasts, of course you can watch on YouTube as well.
And today we're going to be playing very much.
How does this affect the leaves, but it's the sharks, as we're going to kind of look around
as some of the moves that started to happen, as we creep closer to Friday's trade deadline.
So we're going to look at, of course, the Euler's and how now the sharks have been gifted
and unprotected first round pick and why we are very much on team Euler tank here.
We're going to look at some of the other moves and where that leaves perspective sharks
targets here and catch up on some of the rumors as again, we get closer to a deadline
where these sharks kind of buyers, interesting.
So let's start with, of course, an unprotected first round pick that has been gifted to
this Santa Jose sharks.
So this time last year, year ago, this time last year, sharks surprising trade sending
Jake Walman to the Edmonton Euler's where they received a 2026 first round pick.
Part of the language on said pick, and if you're watching on YouTube, I'm pulling it up
right now.
If the selection is a top 12 pick, Edmonton may choose to transfer the 2027 first round
selection to the Santa Jose sharks instead.
So it was a top 12 protected.
If the Euler's somehow got into the top 12, they could choose to send an unprotected
2027 for pick.
Should Edmonton choose to trade their 2027 first round selection prior to the 2026 NHL
trade deadline for 2026 first round selection, we'll transfer to Santa Jose unconditionally.
Today, in the attempt to spruce up their bottom six, the Edmonton Euler's traded for Jason
Dickinson.
If you are in our Discord channel, which you should 100% check out because it's super
fun.
I saw somebody mentioned the, we were talking about this, but somebody mentioned Dickinson,
and my mind went straight to Sam Dickinson because I'm an idiot, and I was like, what?
And then we realized, oh, it was the Jason Dickinson.
There are too many Dickinson's, dear President, there are too many Dickinson's, please eliminate
three.
So the shirts, sorry, the Euler's, they sent their first round pick to get Jason Dickinson
back, and some other stuff happened in that transaction as well, but sending it first
from the 2027 first round pick to Chicago, and they did the exact same thing again for
next year, where if that pick is, if they trade their 2028 first round pick, that pick
becomes an unprotected pick for Chicago as well.
So they could be doing this exact same thing.
So you're thinking, right, with the Euler's, okay, like who cares, right, there's an Euler's
team, they're probably going to make a deep play our front.
What was this reminder?
They played 62 games, right, 68 points, they're currently third.
In the Pacific, this is before the end of the crack and game, the crack and are currently
losing as I'm recording this to the St. Louis Blues, which is good for us, but assuming
that holds, they'll still be third in the Pacific, and they'll have a four point lead
on your Santa's A-sharks, okay, oh, it's three to, and it's, end up being three to, where
we at right now with this, anyway, so if the sharks, right, sorry, if the Euler's four
point lead, okay, cool, you know, like they're probably still making a playoffs, not so fast
by friends.
Edmonton has 20 games left, and it is a brutal schedule.
They currently have the 10th toughest schedule left, if you look at Take a Thorn Strength
of Schedule.
They're the 10th hardest schedule, the 0.572 Strength of Schedule.
Some of the teams they play, two games against the Avalanche, we've seen that Avalanche
team.
It's pretty good.
They have a game against the Stars, pretty good Stars team, game against the Hurricanes,
okay, game against the bolts, three games against the Vegas Golden Knights, and one game
against the Ducks.
Just to kind of name a few of like some of the toughest opponents they have left.
They also play the sharks twice between now and the end of the season.
So again, like most likely, they're going to end up in the playoffs, whether it's that
third Pacific spot, we kind of know it's probably going to be Vegas, probably going to be
Anaheim at number two.
Then you figure it's going to be some sort of Edmonton, Seattle, or San Jose, or L.A.
It's like that third wild card spot, and then one of the other wild card spot was assuming
the mammoth, and we'll talk about them here in a little bit, they're probably going
to be wild card one, or they're probably going to get one of the wild card spots.
So it's four teams basically fighting for two spots here.
That's a really brutal schedule, especially when you compare like the shark schedule,
which is the 30th easiest schedule, and you have six games against the six games against
the preads and the blues who are both making trades, as well as you submit game against
the connox, and right, all these teams, we've lost games to some of these teams that you
should have, you know, right, that flames, flames, perfect example, right, you're not taking
care of business, right?
But just, you know, this is a very interesting prospect where there's a legitimate chance
that the oiler's pick might be more valuable than the shark's pick, because it's
unprotected, and because the oilers have such a brutal schedule, and again, most likely,
most likely, Edmonton's probably going to be a playoff team.
But what happens if they are not, and what happens if they win the lottery?
Again, we're talking, my new percentages things here, but the oilers just say they finish
at like 12, and they win the lottery in that move, and you can move up 10 spots, right?
The sharks that are all of a sudden having a top five pick given to them from the Edmonton
oilers for the Jake Walman trade, and people have asked, like, was the Jake Walman trade
worth it for sure?
Because that's the thing the sharks need, right?
Is they need more puck moving defensements just like Jake Walman, and Walman signed a,
you know, pretty reasonable contract, I think, seven by seven or something like that, right?
It's hard to say, but we don't know if this pick is going to turn out to be, and again,
it's most likely going to be in the teams here, if not late 20, or like teens are in the
20s here, but there's, there's a more than 0% chance that this pick ends up as a top 10
pick, and potentially even a top five pick for the San Jose sharks.
It's again, it's pretty, pretty small, but you're saying there's a chance.
So we are very much, even as gross as it's going to sound, we're going to have to root
for the Vegas Golden Knights against the oilers, we're going to continually root against,
like we are, that is the number one team we are rooting against this, the rest of the season
is the Edmonton oil, they are number, they have jumped to number one on the hate watch list,
we are rooting for them to collapse, and get us that pick, like having a potential top 15,
like top 15 pick with a chance to maybe even move up, and that is what we're looking for.
So, man, we, the shark is going to have their cake and eat it too here, right?
Everybody's saying we can't make the playoffs, we got to tank, you can make the playoffs,
and still get another pick, what, how great would it be, because the sharks and the oilers,
both, they play each other like at the end of the season, April 8th, what if like that's the
game where the sharks knock the oilers out of the playoffs, it's at San Jose, oh my goodness,
you know, just like the Bordeaux Meg Slayer game, that could be our new, what, just
thinking about it already, anyway, so, oilers, we're on the hate watch, that's on the hate watch
right now, is we're going to power through those oilers games and hope for the collapse,
that we, we all deserve to see. So, we're going to look at some of the other big moves around
the NHL, and there's a lot of them who, people that are kind of in the mix, right, the
Preds, Utah, and the oilers, teams that are kind of in that same range, making some moves here,
we're going to talk about how that affect again. How does this affect the Maple Leafs,
sharks version, we'll get to that here in just one second.

So some of the other big moves that have happened today, and again, how does this affect the
leaves sharks edition, let's start, I think with one of the biggest here in the Western conference,
as McKenzie Weger, who we looked at as a potential fit for the San Jose sharks,
traded from Calgary to the mammoth, and again, that mammoth team is right there in that wild card hunt.
It was Olimata, a prospect, Senator Prospect, Jonathan, Kastanga, and then they traded a three
second round picks in this year's draft. So I really like this move from mammoth, I know
McKenzie Weger has not had the greatest season of stuff, and we talked about this work, he's still
putting up solid underlying numbers despite peeing on a really bad Calgary team, and how does he
perform now playing on a much better Utah mammoth team here? So, but very much in the, again,
how does this affect the leaves sharks edition? I am curious to see, well, not curious to see,
sorry, so let's start with the playoff race, where again, I do think the mammoth are a clear cut
going to be that wild card one, right? They're not going to catch, they're too far back to catch
Dallas, Minnesota, right? They're almost, they're like 15 points behind the wild, which is ridiculous.
So, you have the Kraken who are at 67 points, you have the sharks who are 64, you have the Kings
who are 62, we're kind of your major players right now, as we'll talk about the Preds here in a second, but
I feel like they're kind of loading up here, I really do like this team of theirs going forward,
and like you're seeing all their young players kind of be, you know, being a big focal part of it,
and their schedule, it's not too bad going down the stretch here, I'm trying to, it's actually
really easy going down the stretch, they saw some games in their division, which is going to be
tough, of course, but they kind of play a lot of the same teams as sharks do, it's a little bit more
spread out than the sharks, like the, you know, Utah has a couple games against like the Black
Hawks, and they play kind of the rest of the division at least one more time here, so they still have
some tough games that they're going to have to manage and navigate through, but I feel like
that this team is most likely, like they're in the driver's seat to be that Wild Card One, and you
kind of want the Wild Card One, if you're the sharks again, we're way ahead of trying to
position it, but Wild Card Two is going to be playing Colorado, Wild Card One's going to be playing
whoever wins the Pacific, which is most likely going to be Vegas, and then you're like, you
really kind of want that Wild, that Pacific Three is like where you want to end up, because you kind
of have like, you feel like you have a chance against Anaheim, but anyway, so they, and interesting
with those three picks, if you are a, if the sharks pick, or even if the Edmonton pick falls back,
and you're very much a want to try to get more picks, Calgary is going to be very much a trade
down target, to try to get, like if you want just more swings at the bat, and maybe Calgary wants
to try to get back into the first round, Calgary now with all three of those second round picks,
that is a very much a trade down target in the, how does this affect the Leafs sharks edition, so
some of the other moves, the Nashville predators have been selling off a lot of stuff,
so they traded Cole Smith, Michael McCarran, Nick Blinkenberg, I really like that, Nick Blinkenberg
trade for the abs, like that is a really solid, just kind of six seventh offenseman, if you need him
to play, he's not going to, like that's a really smart trade, like he would, Blinkenberg I think
would be playing minutes for the sharks, but really like that trade for them, but it seems like
the Pregs might be, I don't think they're going to move any of the big names, but they're
like they're kind of selling off some of the spare parts here, so I don't know if they're waving
the white flag, but I think they kind of realize what they are, and maybe this playoff push for them
might be coming to an end here, which is good for the sharks, even though they're tied with points
at the moment, or sorry they're two points back, the sharks two of two games in hand, and the Pregs,
you know, if that's one less team you have to kind of worry about, that really does work out
for San Jose here, that's just one less team to kind of hopefully not have to worry about, so
their schedule is pretty, it's kind of similar to the sharks as well, they have some, you know,
of course they play the sharks, and they play the Kings a couple times here, but they still have three
games, or they still, sorry, excuse me, they have a game against pretty much kind of all the top
teams here left as well, so, but the hope it looks like Nationals kind of gracefully bowing out of
the run right now, so some of the other moves again in the how does this affect the San Jose
sharks, we talked about the Oilers Pick, and Chicago continues to be apparently just only trading,
the Oilers in the Black Hawks are just only trading with each other now, which I think is really
funny, so we saw Tyler Myers go to the Knax, we do have the potential Colton Perreco trade
to the blue or from the blues over to the Buffalo Sabers, excuse me, so which would help
weaken the blues is a team that the sharks are going to see multiple three times by the end of
the season, including Friday's game, and there's of course the Robert Thomas rumours as well,
where he might be going to the Kraken, he might be going to, like there's a lot of teams in on
Robert Thomas here, so that's a team that's very much in cell mode right now, and
the sharks could be getting them like at a really nice time on Friday, if they're selling
pieces off, and they don't have their new pieces back, it could kind of work out for them with
going into Friday, sharks would be in the same spot too, where if they sell pieces off and don't have
them back in time as well, but the good thing for them is they have, well actually we'll see who
sticks around for the sharks or from the Barracuda, just in case the sharks lead them, but a lot of
pieces in the very much, how does this affect the leaves, sharks edition, so far, like for today,
so a lot of moving pieces here for San Jose, so we're going to discuss some of the rumours
and such, including Simone Nemitz, who might maybe actually is available, which would be really
fun for San Jose, so we'll get to that here in just one second.

these rumors everybody's line everybody is lying at this time, so take all this with a great
grain of salt, the biggest grain of salt you can find, so there is apparently Pierre LeBron,
very well known works for the athletic, pretty good follow, he tweeted out this morning that the
apparently the New Jersey Devils have been taking fielding calls on one Simone Nemech,
so here's the tweet word forward, going to be interesting to see what happens on the Simone Nemech
front, Devils are taking calls on the second overall pick from 22, no shortage of teams checking it,
New Jersey happy to keep them, but there's a deal that upgrades their forwards in a real way,
they're going to listen, so again we don't know, do the sharks, it is, is a very interesting
Devils team that is not, they're in a weird spot where it felt like this was the year they're
really going to kind of take a big jump, they didn't get the support that they wanted from a lot
of their forward group, you know we talked about a nauseam where the way that their defense is
structured and that they have too many guys, they need to shed contract somewhere, and Simone Nemech
is coming off his ELC and is going to be looking to get paid, so is this an opportunity right,
Mike has got plenty of options, plenty of pieces here, but are the sharks going to be willing to
move off of either a roster player, or is this a time where maybe you can talk to them about like
we have some guys who are almost NHL ready, one of these guys, or if you don't want to maybe move
off of some of your NHL players, one of these guys potentially float your boat, or you know,
again, if a guy like Nemech does come up, a majority of the league is going to check in on it,
so the price is going to be a pretty high for a guy like Simone Nemech, so we'll see,
like we will see what Mike Greer does, what the, and again, they don't have to do anything,
but just one of those ones, right, where again, like I'm still, I'm not in the, I'll believe it
when I see it with Nemech, and I think like they can 100% get more back from Simone Nemech than they
could for a Dougie Hamilton, and you know, trying to trade Dougie Hamilton is going to be very much
in a pain to do, because right, it's the new move clause, he has full control, so even if you come
up with a trade and you bring it to him and you get just like, nah man, I'm not doing that,
it's going to be interesting to see kind of what he does there, so, um, of course we know these
sharks are, I mean, it's, it's been reported multiple times from a lot of different people,
that these sharks are still, they are looking to add defense, like that, Mike Greer is trying to add
on the blue line here, and he wants to add somebody with term, like he's not going to do the rental
business, um, you know, so, somebody, and also the barbrowski stuff really quickly does not make
sense of 1 million percent, like that does not make sense, so that's like, I don't see barbrowski
getting traded really quick, anyway, um, but the, the sharks are trying to add to the blue line here,
and they are, I think they're, they, he is trying to thread the needle of moving out some of his
blue line pieces while also trying to add as well, uh, David Pagnota did mention Morgan Riley
from the Leafs, but he says it, that feels more like an off-season type of thing, uh, for, for Morgan
Riley, but, uh, the sharks are trying to add, still add on the blue line here, so that is, that's good,
that like it's, I do think it's good that Mike Greer isn't just trying to kind of sit on his hands
and, and stand pat, because I do think like trying to add players now, who again can help you now,
and then also help you in the future, should be what he's trying to do, and maybe even if you do
get a rental, like, you can see a, a player trying to stay, as we just saw with Keefer Sherwood in
his contract, you can go again, spend 15 minutes or so talking about that today, um, but I do think like,
it is, it's going to be interesting how Greer kind of handles this next, we're, you know, 36
hours or so, or whatever time it is by the time he listens to it here, um, but they're,
there's still some, like, there's still some stuff left on the board, like, don't think like the,
the board is, is completely empty right now, so, um, kind of defensively, you know, looking at,
so of course we have Dougie Hamilton who we mentioned, Justin Falk, who does have another year on his
contract, um, type of thing, 15 team, no trade lists, Rasmus Russell line in, uh, another year on
his contract, but those, uh, Falk is 33 years, Russell line is 31, um, you know, I'm just using the
daily face off trade board right now. You have Logan Stanley who we talked about is kind of in the
same boat as, as a player like, um, Mario Farr, he's 27, he is going to be a UFA, he's, uh, had a,
he's been a player has taken a long, long time to develop, but he is having a career year, uh,
he also, Simone Benoit from the Maple Leafs who's still a contract at 1.3 for next year,
uh, very kind of Mario Farr, uh, you know, blocks does all that type of stuff, um, and the contract's
really, like, really manageable there, uh, for that, you have Luke Shen, who's a pending UFA in
36, I don't think that one, like, does not make sense for the sharks as well. Um, Tyler Myers,
who just got traded, uh, Emile Andrebe with the Flyers who's 24, uh, but he's a, he's a, he's a,
he's a little guy, so I don't know if that makes a lot of sense for the sharks and what they like on
their blue line. You know, Brandon Carlo, we've talked about, it's also one of a con, uh, on contract
for next year, he's 29, uh, and it's a 4.1, there's a 18 note trade list, so maybe the sharks are on
it, maybe they're not, who knows, uh, with, with that, probably on it, just assuming that they were
these lists are usually made at the beginning of the season, so you have OEL, who's had a really
nice bounce back and he's definitely, he's on, uh, under contract for next season at 3.5,
at age 34 though, so I don't, again, that's kind of another one of those bridge quarter back,
our bridge defenseman type of, of players as well, so, um, they're still like, there is still
stuff out there, and of course the British Knighter one who we've talked about a lot on this
podcast as well, I would assume that's probably like if anything gets done, I feel like that's the
one where it really kind of fits, we know the Rangers are selling, we know the sharks want to add
a piece, they want a guy who's young and even though he needs a new contract, he's still in our
face, he own his rights for the next couple of seasons, so that's the one, if I, if I had to guess,
that's the one where I feel like it, it happens, um, unless something crazy, like Adam Fox or,
um, or Nemitch happen, like those are the two, like, pie in the sky, it would be like Fox or,
or Nemitch, uh, and even Fox, like, he's only 28, and I know we, we, he's, I did know a, all
access episode talking about Adam Fox, uh, and like he, he would, that would, that's, that,
because that's, he's only 28, he's been there done that, like, you don't have to worry about if it's,
you know, like, with Nemitch where it feels more like a, could this be just a, like, there's still
some concern on his growth and his development and stuff, but Adam Fox is, again, a guy's been
there done it, he's gotten a ranger team to the Easter conference finals, he's been the number one
defenseman, like that, that's the, like, if you can pull off that one, then might, then build a
statue for Mike Greer, because you're ready to go after that point. If you get, if you, then everything
else fits, right? If you get Fox and then you have Dickinson and like, you can find, you can find
middle-parent defenseman to kind of fit in around there, but anyway, but if I, like I said,
if I had to guess Schneider kind of feels like the one where I think it makes the most sense of
realistically available and costs and everything else, so we'll see, it's going to be fun. So
stick around, we'll be back on, yeah, we'll be back on Thursday, we'll have probably a
episode, mid afternoon, and then of course, we'll have a kind of breakdown, whatever happens,
Thursday night gets you ready for the trade deadline, all that fun stuff, and then we have
the trade deadline on Friday, where I will be stationed here basically all day, ready to go,
reacting to whatever happens for the sharks. So make sure you guys are following along,
