0:45
Miami ranked not one, not two, but five on this list of most hated teams.
0:52
Yeah, we've got work to do.
0:59
You are locked on Canes, your daily podcast on the Miami Hurricanes, part of The Lockdown

1:11
Because if you went back in a time machine to, let's say, 1989, and you were to pull
1:17
100 college football fans from outside South Florida on their most hated team, 110 of those
1:25
100 people would have said Miami.
1:28
So we got work to do.
1:29
Happy Monday, if there is such a thing, I am Alex Dono, University Miami alumnus, co-host
1:34

2:03
On this loaded episode, there are two new recruiting predictions, crystal balls for Miami to
2:09
land blue chip players in the class of 2027.
2:13
We'll talk about it.
2:14
I'll give you my reasons why Miami is primed to make another deep college football playoff
2:19
run and hopefully get over the finish line this time around.
2:22
And if they can do that, that would certainly contribute to how hated this program is.
2:27
So Josh Pate from on three sports, he did, I guess, an extensive study on this that culminated
2:35
in a recent episode of his where, you know, he asked college football fans far and wide
2:43
for their most hated teams.
2:45
And he came up with a top eight.
2:48
And as mentioned, I mean, Miami fans, we take a lot of pride in this because when our program
2:53
was like in its absolute peak when it came to pop culture, you know, the era that was
2:58
covered in the you part one documentary, Miami was the most hated team the college football
3:05
had ever seen at that point.
3:06
So we take a lot of pride in this at Miami.
3:09
So the hurricanes are represented on the top eight Josh Pate most hated teams, but we
3:16
barely made the top five.
3:18
So here's the order.
3:19
We'll tell you what he said about Miami.
3:22
The most hated the Notre Dame fighting Irish, and you know what?
3:26
Miami fans may not argue that one.
3:28
The arrogance, the holier than now attitude, the attitude that Notre Dame is just different
3:34
from every other program in college football.
3:37
That's the attitude their fans have.
3:39
It's understandable Alabama comes in at number two, Texas at number three, LSU at number
3:46
I'm sure the Lane Kiffin effect has a lot to do with that right now.
3:49
Miami at number five, USC number six, Michigan at number seven.
3:55
I feel like Michigan who literally cheated to win a national championship a couple of
4:01
years ago could be ranked a little higher than seven, but you know what?
4:05
Miami being ranked higher than them.
4:07
It shows you this you this logo carries weight.
4:11
And then rounding out the top eight is Ohio State, but here is per on three sports y on
4:18
this Josh Payt poll.
4:20
Miami comes in number five top five in the most hated teams.
4:25
While he acknowledged that the canes could be higher.
4:29
Payt cited what he described as two distinct groups of haters.
4:35
Those of a certain age that remember when the you were widely considered the bad boys
4:40
of college football in the 80s and 90s.
4:43
Yeah, he's right about that.
4:45
You know, the older, the 40 plus crowd out there that like disliked Miami because of
4:51
They will never let that go like again, the you part one documentary, all of that stuff
4:59
You know, we've over the last couple of weeks, we've interviewed two different players
5:04
who were big parts of that 1991 cotton bowl game with all the penalties and the celebrations.
5:10
Like that game is like the perfect example of why the you is hated by the older crowd.
5:17
You know, you were either with us or you were against us back then.
5:20
And he says others are more bothered by the perceived arrogance.
5:24
Some hurricanes fans carry themselves with, especially after making last season's college
5:29
football playoff championship game.
5:31
Here's a quote from paid quote, Miami is back in the national championship conversation.
5:37
They're back at the head table and here's the thing about Miami folks.
5:42
When they're good, they're the first in line to tell you they're the first in line to
5:46
let you know, yeah, you know, it's funny.
5:49
People always make their jokes about how Miami doesn't have any fans.
5:53
And then as soon as you say something obnoxious or wrong about our program on social media,
6:00
you get attacked by Miami fans because you just don't realize we're everywhere, right?
6:05
I mean, listen, we we may not sell out a September game against Bethune Cookman because we've
6:12
got alumni in California and Chicago and New York all over the world.
6:17
But this fan base comes together when we're needed most.
6:21
And I think another, by the way, with how international Miami's fan base is something that
6:25
paint did not include in his explanation there as to why Miami is so hated.
6:31
And I'm going to try to put this as nicely as possible because I could get a lot deeper
6:34
on to this if I really wanted to, but you know, a lot of college football fans who are fans
6:40
of the traditional powers who are from the college towns, they have a lot of resentment
6:46
about the fact that, you know, Miami, our city is an international melting pot as opposed
6:54
to the college towns like they they feel like they're part of some club that we're not
7:00
So there's resentment that comes from that.
7:02
But I do think that for part of it, paint hit the nail on the head that, yeah, listen,
7:08
Miami fans, we have that that pent up swagger and we're a fiery group of people.
7:14
And when the team is good and winning football games, we're going to be the first there to
7:19
I mean, it, you know, we fell short in the national championship and I'm sorry we did,
7:24
but it was still an impressive run to get to the CFP championship.
7:28
And another reason why Miami fans got so loud this past season was, we had the chance
7:35
to beat every single one of our rivals last year, Florida knocked them down, Florida state
7:42
we beat them Ohio state Notre Dame Virginia Tech, who I obviously not a, not a powerhouse
7:49
program at that moment, but you're talking about your like top five of your biggest rivals
7:55
in college football, Miami had the chance to beat them all in one season.
7:59
So that's part of the reason why we've gotten so loud, but the only thing that can make
8:04
Miami fans even louder for next year is if we can finish the job because, oh man, if
8:12
the hurricanes, when, because it's only a matter of time, whether it happens next year,
8:17
the year after five years from now, 10 years from now, when Miami gets national championship
8:22
number six, there's going to be a lot of folks who might want to stay off of social media
8:27
for years after that because we're going to be so loud about it.
8:32
But you know, do you guys agree with the other programs that he put above Miami for most
8:38
I mean, I don't know, Alabama, I would have said a couple of years ago, I just don't
8:43
feel like Bama at number two has the same sort of hatred in the Kalan de Bohr era that
8:49
they had with Sabin, and it's not like Sabin necessarily should have been hated, but
8:54
they were just so dominant and they've not had that same level of dominance in the post
9:00
Sabin era, Texas, you know, Texas is always going to be hated because Texas fans are a
9:07
little bit like Miami fans that, you know, they, as we do, they get very obnoxious when
9:11
they win things and archmaning is very polarizing, LSU at number four, you know, they find a way
9:19
to go from like the most unlikable head coach in Brian Kelly to finding someone even more
9:25
unlikable than Kelly with, with Lane and the way that they hired Lane and the way he went
9:32
about leaving Ole Miss.
9:33
So I get that one, but I'm telling you, man, if Miami this season can get national championship
9:39
number six, I think we can skyrocket past a few of those programs.
9:43
We may not quite reach Notre Dame levels of hatred because their pompous attitude finally
9:48
caught up with them, opting out of the pop tart bowl.
9:52
But I think we can get pretty close to that.
9:54
A couple of things I want to get to when we come back.
9:57
My reasons for why Miami is going to make another deep run this season and become even
10:02
And also, I did my own scientific study on the most hated Miami rivals, which programs do
10:10
Do you want to keep it locked right here, my friends?
10:12
It's a glorious Monday and we're only getting started on lockdown canes.

12:45
I got to say like I put something out on social media this morning and I I don't know if
12:50
I've ever felt like so connected to other Miami fans because when I was asking you guys,
12:56
what are your most hated college football teams or Miami rivals?
13:04
I've got really four like I, you know, if I really wanted to go beyond four, I could
13:09
probably do it for argument's sake, but I've got my four programs that I dislike most
13:15
and 85% of the responses from you guys are completely in lockstep with me and some of the
13:25
orders are a little bit tweaked, but for me in order and you guys can let me know in
13:28
the comments below your most hated college football teams or rivals.
13:34
I go, I go Florida number one.
13:38
It's because I'm old.
13:40
So if you're like under 30 or under 35, you probably don't go Florida one, but you know,
13:46
I was, I started watching Miami when Miami versus UF was still an annual rivalry.
13:52
My father was a hurricane's fan before I was and so I hear stories from the even older
13:57
fans about the gator flop and of course, you know, when the gators took Miami off their
14:03
schedule, they were too afraid to play us when they, you know, got deep into the weeds
14:08
So there's a lot of resentment there, being an in state guy, I went to school, high school
14:14
A lot of my friends from high school went to UF.
14:17
So we had the rivalries.
14:18
I've got friends who went to Gainesville and everything like that.
14:22
So UF for me is at the top, even above Florida state.
14:26
I put Florida state at number two.
14:28
There's obviously a rivalry, you know, these teams have played annually for God.
14:33
How many consecutive years?
14:34
How many consecutive decades?
14:37
But it's always like you go back to the Bobby Boudon days.
14:40
There was always just a little more respect like Miami and Florida never really respected
14:47
It was just pure hate where Miami versus FSU.
14:50
I think the fact that neither ever took the other off the schedule, no matter which conferences
14:55
they were playing in, you know, when Miami was independent or when Miami was in the big
15:00
east and Florida state was in the ACC, these schools have always played each other.
15:05
And I'm not saying it's always respectful on the field, but there's just been a little
15:09
bit more respect over the last several decades.
15:12
So Florida state is number two right behind Florida.
15:18
I could have maybe even ranked them higher, you know, we just, we just don't play them
15:22
frequently enough, although that rivalry, of course, bitter, bitter is anything.
15:30
Back in the 80s, the whole Catholics versus convicts thing, you know, it was a gross narrative
15:37
And it really brought the hatred out between these fan bases and the players.
15:41
Like I talked to old school players like Randall Thrill Hill who joined us last week.
15:45
Like he despises Notre Dame, the guys who were part of that regular on field rivalry.
15:51
And then of course, this past year, you know, Miami beating Notre Dame in the regular season
15:56
ultimately kept the Irish out of the playoffs.
15:58
We play him again this year, Jeremiah Love at the Combine is talking about how he hates
16:05
So there's definitely something there.
16:07
Maybe you guys rank Notre Dame a little higher than I do at third.
16:11
And then I put Ohio State at fourth.
16:13
I know like the ones who don't really know, like wouldn't say, hey, Miami and Ohio state,
16:18
they're not really rivals.
16:22
I mean, what Miami just did to Ohio State in the 2025 playoffs, Ohio State, you know, allegedly
16:30
beat Miami and the Fiesta Bowl back in 2002 took a championship away from the hurricanes
16:35
on a terrible call on the past interference.
16:37
Like, you know, I consider Ohio State a rival.
16:41
I think most Miami fans do.
16:43
So that that's my four.
16:44
I mean, you could save Virginia Tech.
16:46
You could list a couple of other ACC schools, I guess.
16:49
But Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, that's my top four.
16:55
One of my favorite replies though on social media was from you in Miami who said ACC refs
17:03
That was well done.
17:04
How could I forget the ACC refs, but yeah, that's a good one.
17:09
But those are my four most hated.
17:11
If you guys want to expand it beyond four, let me know in the comments.
17:14
And I've got Florida, Florida State, Notre Dame, Ohio State for mine.
17:19
I was on the crane and cone show last week.
17:23
And you know, according to the fan vote, allegedly, I lost the debate against Brian Driscoll
17:29
who covers Notre Dame.
17:30
And I will accept my defeat like a man.
17:34
It was a fun, fun time being on the show, but unfortunately, I allegedly lost the debate.
17:38
But one of the things that we talked about in that debate was, you know, my view on why
17:43
Miami is going to win a championship before Notre Dame.
17:47
Driscoll's view on why Notre Dame will get it before Miami.
17:50
But my reasons why I strongly feel Miami is on the cusp of winning national championship
17:57
number six and why it can get done in this upcoming 2026 season.
18:03
My first reason, I believe Miami has upgraded at quarterback, because Darian Menseth not
18:11
only has a higher ceiling than Carson Beck with his explosive play capabilities and his
18:17
abilities to extend plays and do more with his legs.
18:22
But I think he's a perfect fit for Shannon Dawson's offense at Miami.
18:26
And Menseth, I think, has the best collection of talent around him that Miami quarterbacks
18:31
have had in recent years.
18:33
Like I would take Menseth supporting cast in terms of receivers and running backs, weapons.
18:39
I would take that over what Carson Beck had in 2025 and over what Cam Ward had in 2024.
18:46
You got the same running back room as last year, but guys will theoretically be more experienced
18:53
Like I'm hoping if Jordan Lyle has a fully healthy season coming up, this guy's the
18:57
limit for Miami's running attack.
18:59
You bring Malakai Tony back a year older, wiser and stronger coming off a 1200 yard true
19:08
You add Cooper Barcai to that.
19:10
You add Dre Jacobs and Cam Vaughan, Dale and Upshog gets a year older.
19:14
Samorian Wingo and Milan Paris might be able to contribute big time as true freshman.
19:19
The receiving core is better.
19:20
The running back room is at least as good, if not better, getting everybody back with
19:25
a year more experience behind their belts.
19:27
So Darian Menseth to me, when it comes to his ability to attack down the field, led the
19:33
nation in deep ball attempts last year at 86 loves to attack down the field.
19:38
His versatility, his ability to extend plays.
19:41
I think Miami's offense is going to be more explosive with Darian Menseth and his weapons
19:46
than it was with Carson Beck and his weapons last year sidebar.
19:51
I'm really proud of Carson Beck for the combine he just had.
19:54
We covered that on our Sunday episode despite getting booed by the petty Indiana and Notre
20:00
Dame fans at Lucas Oil Stadium.
20:02
Carson had a tremendous workout and his stock is rising.
20:07
I think we're going to see him fingers crossed, potentially a day two draft pick, which
20:12
He might end up being quarterback number three in the draft, which would be awesome for
20:17
But I think Darian Menseth is going to be even better at Miami.
20:20
That's reason number one.
20:22
Reason number two, why I think Miami's going to make another deep playoff run.
20:27
I am a firm believer in the concept of learning how to win.
20:31
Because prior to last season, Miami teams usually faded late in the season in November, hadn't
20:40
won a bowl game since 2016.
20:43
Not that bowl games are a great measure because a guy is opting out and stuff, but we had
20:48
a long recent history of Miami kind of fading down the stretch of the season.
20:53
They broke that trend last year.
20:56
This team figured out how to handle adversity, how to break through that brick wall, November,
21:02
December and even into January.
21:04
And I think they can build on that success because this team is battle tested.
21:08
And yeah, it's not all the same players from last year, but leaders in that building,
21:12
like Mark Fletcher, Jr. and Malachi Tony can set the tone for the rest of that group,
21:18
Muhammad Torre, who's like 35 years old, who's back in that linebacker core.
21:23
Like these guys learned how to handle their business and handle their adversity, late
21:27
in the season and peak at the right time.
21:30
So they learned lessons from adversity last year.
21:33
I believe this team is more mentally tough at the start of this season than they were
21:38
Number three, yeah, you lost some really good players from your defense like Bain and
21:43
Mezzador, but this defense has talent.
21:46
And I think the continuity that's going to come in the second year of a Corey Heatherman
21:51
I think this defense can take another step forward.
21:54
And you love the idea of Heatherman getting his second group to coach these guys.
21:59
And then number four, you know, outside of a really, really tough road trip to South
22:03
Bend in November, Miami versus Notre Dame, like that game might be more to decide playoff
22:09
seeding than playoff elimination, because I think Miami and Notre Dame are probably both
22:13
playoff teams, regardless of who wins that game.
22:18
Miami's got an easier schedule on paper than what they had last year.
22:22
Now, you never necessarily know which teams might rise up and fall compared to last year,
22:27
but the hurricanes have what looks like a better schedule, including you get to finish
22:33
your season with three straight home games instead of two straight on the road, which
22:37
really became like what six straight on the road.
22:40
If you include the playoffs in that, in theory, Miami should not have to sneak into an
22:46
at large bid in the playoffs this coming year.
22:49
The table is set for Miami to have, you know, these are famous last words, I guess.
22:54
I hope I'm not jinxing anything, but it looks like Miami's going to have a more manageable
22:59
path into the playoffs than they did last year.
23:03
And Miami looks by and large like the best team in the ACC.
23:08
So hopefully they can get that done.
23:10
So again, I think the table is set for Miami to be able to get back into the CFP and hopefully
23:16
build on what they started.
23:18
That wasn't the end last year.
23:20
That was the beginning of the journey.
23:22
And if Miami is going to continue long term success year after year, you got to build
23:27
it through recruiting a couple of important predictions from Cain's sport and on three
23:34
Miami is now favored to land in the class of 2027.
23:37
A couple of blue chippers are trending in Miami's direction.
23:41
You want to keep it locked right here.
23:42
We're not done yet on this brand new episode of Locked on Cain's.
23:46

24:29
down now available across the U.S.
24:31
I should say download the Robin Hood app now to begin futures and cleared swaps
24:35
trading involves significant risk and is not appropriate for everyone.
24:39
The event contracts are offered by Robin Hood, derivatives LLC,
24:43

24:48
Thank you for making locked on Cain's your first listen.
24:51
Here's a couple of things we have planned for the first half of the week.
24:54
We're going to have our truth teller Tuesday tomorrow with a very special guest.
24:58
Bruce is going to bring another awesome former player on later on today.
25:02
We'll have an evening episode.
25:04
I'm going to sit down with Max Chadwick of Pro Football Focus
25:08
because with the combine wrapping up last week in Indianapolis.
25:12
Max, of course, and his crew at PFF, they cover all of this stuff
25:17
and they've covered these guys since they were in college.
25:20
I want to get Chadwick's take on Rubin Baines draft stock.
25:24
After all this talk about the arms being short, Markelle Bell.
25:29
Do you see that 53640 that he ran?
25:32
Now 536 may not sound impressive,
25:35
but when you factor in 6 foot 9, 346 pounds,
25:41
yeah, that dude is flying for his size.
25:44
So how did Markelle Bell raise his stock
25:46
and did Carson Beck raise his stock with the workout that he had?
25:50
We're going to talk about them and all the other draft prospects
25:52
with Max Chadwick of PFF College.
25:55
That'll be in a bonus episode later on today.
25:57
And on Wednesday, we're going to talk recruiting
26:01
with EJ Holland, who's new to the CainSport.com crew
26:06
at rivals on three.
26:08
EJ has been on the Miami beat.
26:10
He used to cover Michigan.
26:11
He's been on the Miami beat for like a month
26:14
and he is crushing it like he goes to all the camps,
26:18
all the combines, all the seven on sevens.
26:21
He's interviewing prospects left and right.
26:23
So I want to get kind of EJ's take on where Miami recruiting stands
26:27
and actually EJ Holland from on three rivals.
26:31
He and head of rival scouting Chad Simmons
26:35
put in a couple of joint predictions,
26:38
the rivals version of the crystal ball over the weekend.
26:42
These are important predictions.
26:44
They predict Nick Leneer, five-star Carol Citywide receiver
26:48
to Miami and Nick Leneer, this new prediction for him,
26:51
is actually his fourth rivals prediction
26:55
from various reporters to land at the U,
26:57
which is a great sign that Miami is now the trending favorite.
27:02
Leneer, EJ writes, has long been considered a Miami lean
27:06
and the hurricanes appear close to crossing
27:08
the finish line in this race.
27:09
Leneer was very open about his process
27:12
at the sevens event last weekend
27:14
and made it clear that Miami remains in the pole position.
27:18
I believe Nick Leneer, especially with him being local,
27:22
he's a musket, right?
27:23
Because over the years, we've had really good receivers
27:28
That guy at Ohio State, whose name I will no longer mention,
27:31
because I'm tired of talking about him,
27:32
is the ultimate example.
27:34
We don't want Nick Leneer to leave.
27:36
Mark Matthews, the five-star offensive tackle
27:39
from St. Thomas is another one.
27:41
We do not want to leave the area,
27:43
but Leneer is right up there.
27:46
And then there's also a prospect from Georgia,
27:49
a top defensive prospect that Miami is trending well with.
27:53
Holland and Simmons have logged
27:55
arrivals prediction in favor of KJ Caldwell to Miami.
28:00
He's a four-star safety out of Littleburn, Georgia,
28:04
Parkview High School.
28:05
KJ Caldwell, I'm still learning more about his game.
28:09
He's six foot 180 pounds.
28:12
Miami is a strong trending leader.
28:15
LSU, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, and Georgia,
28:18
the in-state schools are also in the mix for him.
28:21
You notice Miami over the last few years
28:23
in the crystal ball era has done pretty well,
28:25
taken good prospects out of the state of Georgia.
28:28
This could be another one,
28:29
as we're always trying to bolster
28:31
that defensive backfield, right?
28:32
So KJ Caldwell, another prediction
28:35
that goes in Miami's favor.
28:36
So I know we're gonna talk about these prospects
28:39
and so many others on Wednesday
28:41
when EJ Holland from rivals on three,
28:44
CainSport.com joins us.
28:46
So I'm looking forward to getting into all of that.
28:49
Something else I'm gonna be getting into
28:51
throughout the week is we know we're
28:53
little over three weeks away from the start
28:55
of Spring football at Miami.
28:57
We're looking at March 24th
28:59
as the targeted start date there.
29:01
I made a couple of small tweaks to my pre-Spring depth chart,
29:06
but I know we're gonna have certainly some debates
29:09
on who I've got starting,
29:10
who I've got as the primary backups,
29:12
and then in a couple of months after Spring Ball,
29:15
we can go back and look at where I may have been wrong
29:18
or where I may have been very right.
29:20
So we have a great week coming up.
