Hello friends, welcome to the scene pod for kids.
0:09
Thank you for joining me today, as we spend time with our friend Jesus.
0:15
Spending time with Jesus is the best way to start your day.
0:19
Let's begin our time together, praising Him.
0:26
Have you ever seen a fountain?
0:28
My parents put a fountain in their backyard.
0:31
The water is pumped up and bubbles out, spills down into the small pond below the fountain,
0:36
and then gets pumped back up, and it starts all over again.
0:39
It's a constant flow of water.
0:42
They get all kinds of wildlife coming to the fountain for a drink of water.
0:47
They have seen a fox, skunk, deer, turkeys, and small birds.
0:52
The fountain is a blessing to all those animals.
0:55
That is what Jesus does for us.
0:57
He gives us blessings that never end.
1:27
To adore thee, they all still are goodness-proof.
1:33
All the love and the story is not hard with joy and love.
1:41
Don't you grace, have a doubt at her.
1:45
Daily all I've come straight to be.
1:49
Let by goodness like a fatter,
1:54
find me closer and stand to thee.
1:58
Brought to wonder, Lord, I feel it.
2:02
Brought to live on our home.
2:06
Here's my heart, I'll take and seal it.
2:10
Seal it for thy points out of.
2:24
God is merciful and God is gracious.
2:27
That's what we talked about last time.
2:29
Well, now we're going to learn about a new king, a new king.
2:35
But first, let's bow our heads and pray.
2:38
Dear Lord, be with us as we study from your word,
2:42
that you will help us to see, to understand, to hear what you want us to know today.
2:48
In Jesus' name, amen.
2:51
After King Solomon died, Israel became two kingdoms.
2:57
Not one, like they were before, but two kingdoms.
3:01
The northern kingdom was called Israel, and the southern kingdom was called Judah.
3:07
The first king of the northern kingdom was Jeroboam.
3:11
And because he was afraid that the people would go back to join Judah,
3:15
if they went to Jerusalem to worship God,
3:18
he decided he was going to do something to keep them from going back and worshiping God.
3:22
Because the more that they're in Jerusalem worshiping God,
3:26
maybe they'll just kind of want to stay there, or maybe they'll just kind of want that king to rule over them.
3:31
Oh, that's not good.
3:33
Let's keep them here.
3:34
Let's keep them in our own country.
3:36
So he made two gold calves in his kingdom for people to worship there.
3:42
Oh, it doesn't sound like a good idea, does it?
3:45
No, and from then on, most of the people in the northern kingdom worshiped idols.
3:53
Oh, that's terrible.
3:55
They copied the heathen nations, living all around them,
3:58
and they were doing everything like the other heathens around them.
4:07
God never stopped trying to help his people.
4:12
He sent profit after profit.
4:15
Some people chose to obey and to trust him, no matter what the rest did.
4:20
But most of them didn't obey.
4:23
Here's a verse that we find many times, many, many times,
4:27
as we read the stories about the kings of the northern kingdom,
4:31
those ten tribes in the north.
4:33
Let's go to second kings, chapter 14, verse 24.
4:38
That's a mouthful, isn't it?
4:40
Well, let's start with second kings.
4:42
So we're going to turn in our Bibles to second kings.
4:45
It's an Old Testament.
4:48
You have Joshua Judges Ruth, first and second Samuel,
4:52
and then first and second kings.
4:55
So I mean first kings.
4:57
Here we go, second kings.
4:59
All right, second kings.
5:01
And then we're going to verse chapter, chapter chapter, not verse.
5:07
Chapter 14, so I got to go back a little bit.
5:10
Chapter 14 and then verse 24.
5:13
Here's what this says.
5:17
And there were also perverted persons in the land.
5:21
They did according to all the abominations of the nations
5:26
which the Lord had cast out before the children of Israel.
5:31
It says that they did evil on the side of the Lord.
5:35
And you're going to see that over and over as kings come
5:40
In the southern kingdom of Judah,
5:42
little King Joe Ash started out making really good decisions.
5:46
Remember, he collected money to be able to clean up the temple
5:50
and to make the repairs that were needed.
5:53
And he called people to come.
5:55
He had the scroll, the law, so that he could read about
5:59
what God's rules were.
6:01
He could follow those and find happiness and true joy.
6:04
And so he started out really well.
6:07
But after his uncle, Joheita died,
6:10
he chose to listen to the wrong people.
6:13
And the end of his story was very, very sad.
6:16
After Joe Ash was there on the throne,
6:18
there were other kings that followed him.
6:20
And they would start out well too.
6:22
They would do really, really good.
6:24
But then they changed, just like Joe Ash did.
6:28
Finally, however, there was a king who came to the throne
6:33
and stayed loyal to God,
6:35
even though he made some mistakes.
6:37
He was still loyal to God from beginning to end.
6:40
Do you know what his name was?
6:42
It's actually a name that sounds like a book of the Bible.
6:47
I've heard a Bible trivia question that asked
6:52
if this king's name was a book of the Bible.
6:56
His name was Hezekiah.
6:58
Doesn't Hezekiah sound like it could be a book in the Bible?
7:01
What were some of the first things that Hezekiah did?
7:04
We're going to go to 2nd Chronicles.
7:06
So we're going to turn in our Bibles.
7:08
Let's see, oops, I have a pen in my Bible.
7:11
It's in the wrong place.
7:13
Let's go to 2nd Chronicles.
7:15
So we were in 2nd Kings.
7:18
Now we're going to go 1st Chronicles
7:20
and then 2nd Chronicles.
7:22
So it's right after 1st 2nd Kings,
7:26
1st and 2nd Chronicles.
7:27
So 2nd Chronicles 29.
7:36
We're going to see what Hezekiah did
7:39
as he came, or right after,
7:41
he came to the throne.
7:43
Hezekiah became king when he was 25 years old.
7:48
And he reigned 29 years in Jerusalem.
7:52
His mother's name was Abysia,
7:55
the daughter of Zechariah.
7:57
And he did what was right in the side of the Lord.
8:01
According to all that his father, David, had done.
8:05
In the first year of his reign,
8:09
he opened the doors of the house of the Lord
8:14
Then he brought in the priests and the Levites
8:17
and gathered them in the east square
8:24
now sanctify yourselves,
8:26
sanctify the house of the Lord God of your fathers
8:30
and carry out the rubbish from the holy place.
8:34
Isn't that wonderful?
8:36
He helped them to turn to God,
8:38
to sanctify the house of the Lord,
8:41
to clean up the temple,
8:44
and to prepare to worship God.
8:46
That sounds like a good start, doesn't it?
8:49
Have you ever been on a hike?
8:51
I was thinking about this story
8:53
and about how sometimes people start out really well
8:57
and sometimes they don't end so well.
9:01
But there's others who do really, really well.
9:04
That's because they follow the path.
9:06
We've been on hikes before,
9:09
we're all, oh, we have the energy
9:11
and we're all ready to go
9:12
and we're hiking along,
9:15
and then we're like, okay,
9:17
now it's time to turn around and go back
9:19
and instead of following the trail,
9:21
we're like, well, that would take a lot longer.
9:23
Why don't we just cut through?
9:25
We can just cut across and then we'll be fine.
9:28
It doesn't usually turn out fine.
9:31
You get lost and turned around
9:33
and finally when you get back,
9:35
it was a lot of work to get back.
9:39
like the kings of Judah,
9:41
the kings of Israel.
9:42
Some of them started out really well.
9:44
They were following God.
9:45
They were loving God.
9:46
But then along the way,
9:48
they made some choices.
9:49
They made some decisions
9:51
that ended up leaving them in a place
9:53
where they did not want to be.
9:56
Is making good choices
9:58
at the beginning enough?
10:00
Is it enough just to say,
10:01
oh, well, I made a good choice a while ago?
10:04
Yeah, I'm not making good ones now,
10:06
but that's all right.
10:07
No, that's not how it works.
10:09
What else do we need to do?
10:11
We need to make good choices all along.
10:14
We need to follow the path all along.
10:17
If there's a loop in the trail,
10:19
you follow that loop
10:20
until you get back to the parking area.
10:22
Make choices to stay on the path.
10:26
That is what keeps us safe.
10:28
That is what gets us there,
10:31
and that is what brings us happiness.
10:34
The choices that we make,
10:37
we want to choose to keep following Him
10:40
and keep making good choices
10:42
so that we can stay on the trail
10:44
and stay close to Him.
10:47
Lord, as we continue learning about
10:49
has a kind of this week.
10:50
I just pray that You'll help us
10:52
to make good choices.
10:53
And even when we mess up
10:55
or do something that's wrong,
10:56
help us to confess and to
11:01
and that You will give us forgiveness.
11:42
Start with Jesus is the most important thing
11:51
you can do for your child.
11:54
and sharing the wonderful stories in the Bible
11:56
will help them to learn more as they grow,
11:59
not only physically,
12:00
but also spiritually.
12:05
Sometimes it's hard to spend time with Jesus
12:07
ourselves when life is so busy.
12:10
But in order to be the best teachers for our kids,
12:13
we need to prioritize our own spiritual needs.
12:17
Starting with Jesus has a devotional series
12:19
for parents called Renew
12:21
that goes right along with the lessons
12:23
that your kids listen to.
12:24
But it's geared for adults.
