How cool is that pre order now available March 17th on PlayStation 5 Xbox and Nintendo
Switch rated E for everyone on today's show.
We've got a bunch of pre arbitration signings that took place and an explanation of what
exactly happened with Mason when we've got not one but two games to talk about in this
one which included a rough appearance by one of the Cardinals.
Most important bullpen arms but we're going to start with what we saw on Wednesday as the
Cardinals face the Washington nationals and it was another day where the pitching pretty
good.
Hitting pretty uninspiring.
We had a lineup that featured a lot of the people that the Cardinals are going to be counting
on in 2026.
This is a legit lineup here.
Mason when JJ weather hold Alec Burleson Jordan Walker.
Colin Gorman Jose Firmin Pedro Pahas Nathan Church and the Hulk himself Raniel Rodriguez.
These were your starters against the Washington nationals.
And what has become an all too common theme so far here in the spring.
Things did not go so well.
This group of starters managed to go three for 24 on Wednesday.
Three for 24.
And this time you can't before you do it.
Before you say it.
Oh, I bet it was so and so cannot put the blame on Jordan Walker and Nolan Gorman this
time around because they had two of the three hits Mason when was over three saw his
bringing average drop down to 158.
What's up with that JJ weather haul he walks was hit by a pitch goes over one but that's
now eight walks so far this JJ which is one short of the league lead and he's got an
OBP of 500 so far so even though he was going for one.
He's on base two out of three times so not going to complain about that Alec Burleson.
Oh for three with a walk he's down to 250 Jose Firmin over three is down to 143 Jose Firmin
had four hits in his first ten at bats and it was very exciting.
And we were like all right Jose Firmin is getting a chance to show that you know he belongs
in the major leagues and then he should be playing more.
He's over 18 cents so the average has fallen way down to 143 Paz over two batting average
down to 111 this spring.
Rodriguez over four two strikeouts and he grounded into a double play when they announced
the lineup I was like oh man I was like wouldn't this would have been a good game to have
on TV because you got to see Dustin May and of course JJ's in the lineup and then you
got Rodriguez and now I'm kind of glad that I didn't have to watch.
Rodriguez go oh for four with two strikeouts and ground into a double play although I still
would have liked to have seen him play because we haven't got a chance to do it very often.
But either way not a great day for him.
Lot of attention is on Walker and Gorman for good reason here in 26.
There are no excuses for them anymore they are playing the positions that they are supposed
to be playing.
They're not they're not getting moved to weird spots places that are you know they're
not used to.
These are their positions right field and third base.
They don't have any veterans standing in their way limiting them from being able to get
500 bats maybe even 600 if you play well.
The org has back them their manager Ali marble has back them their teammates have back
them and now the fan base is just waiting for the results.
And in this one it was the two out combination of Burley Walker and Gorman.
They finally got the Cardinals on the board in the sixth inning.
Burley walked on four straight Walker ends up driving the one one slider up the middle
gets through into center field and then it was Gorman who turned on a no two fastball
lined it into right field for an RBI single to tie the ball game up at one a piece.
And I hate to you know I hate having to use like the kitty gloves when I talk about
these guys.
But after so much negativity that has surrounded Walker and Gorman the last couple seasons
you know you're still kind of like well I don't want to be a total jerk every time things
don't go great.
And when you're looking for positives to come away with from what you've seen so far
in the spring heading into this new year.
That's what you got in this inning.
That was a positive inning that included Walker and Gorman.
So yay we applaud that.
Now overall the results are still extremely underwhelming for I would say more Walker
than than Gorman like Georgia Walker is now hitting just 231 in the spring.
And I know we're not supposed to get bent out over you know bent out of shape about stats
in the spring.
Or bad you're supposed to just kind of stay even keel.
But Jordan Walker is hitting 231 he's six for 26 with eight strikeouts and just two walks
only two RBI's and zero extra bass hits none.
This is a man who is six foot six 250 pounds.
He's as big as Giancarlo Stan who is a massive man.
The ball should be flying off of his bat even when he doesn't catch it flush on the barrel.
And yet the mystery continues on why he can't put the ball in the air and do it with authority
more frequently.
It's an absolute mystery nobody can seem to figure it out and I remember and I'm sure
you do too.
It's when they first brought him up that first season and he was getting bass hits and the
batting average was fine but they were like look we got to work on you you know getting
the ball in the air we need some left dude we need to work on this.
And I do remember at that time and I was like well isn't he hitting like three something
right now like just kind of let him do his thing you know he's a he's a rookies 20 like
you know we're going to mess with the swing already.
And whatever has happened since then since that season because memory came back and he
wasn't so bad he's actually had a pretty good rookie season.
That's then it's what what is this it's it's confusing and we don't know why we don't
know what has happened like well where the things go so wrong that a man of his stature
is not even hitting line drives anymore it's all just going into the ground.
So it's problem it's problem no engorment is batting just 160 this spring.
He's 4 for 25 but on the positive side of things with gorman he does have two home runs
in five ribbies and he's only struck out four times while walking three times what was
the big problem with gorman way too many strikeouts right and as I've said before you would
take the lower batting average and the higher amount of strikeouts as long as when he is
putting the ball in play he's doing some serious damage on those balls that he connects
with like if he's hitting just singles like like Walker you're not going to be thrilled
with the results but we've seen the kind of production we were hoping to see from him so
far this spring the too long fly he's also hit a couple into the win they should have been
gone and they've been hung up so and he's cut down the strikeouts so I feel like gorman
is on a better path than Jordan Walker is so far this spring the only other hit in this
game was at least starters wise was from nathan church who got the start and center field
and that ball didn't leave the infield so it's now like you he ripped one through the
cartels offense the score to one run in each of its last two games left field continues
to be a competitive spot we're still looking for answers there so JC's off at the WBC you've
seen for mean you've seen church you've seen Nelson Velazquez get a lot of the action
of course Joshua bias as well but we know he's going to start in Memphis has already been
cut from the major league camp to uh to go down and he'll start at Memphis this year which
is what we thought should happen it was it like when I tweeted that out I was it I really
wasn't saying like hey he should be started like that's not what I meant it kind of got
misconstrued but you know he had a heck of a spring so I'm excited to see him continue
his progression and we'll see what he does at Memphis when the season starts but the
other three guys for mean church Velazquez um we can focus on those three right now and
Velazquez hit another home run in the game on Tuesday against the mats he now leads the
cartels in spring with eight hits so far he's eight for 23 is it in 348 with two home runs
three RBI's five walks and just two struggles and if you remember he did start off the spring
kind of slow he was two for ten but in his last five games he's now batting 462 going
six for 13 both his home runs have come in the last five games just one strike out so
he's putting the ball in play if he continues to do this will it be enough for him to earn
a spot despite not being on the 40 man roster which is like the real problem here because
like okay well he's not on the 40 man means you got to get somebody off the 40 man that
you're willing to get rid of you know I'm sure you can find somebody in there but um you
know is that going to be enough for them to to trust him to be on the major league roster to be
a bench bat or even the starting left fielder like I don't know we still got some time to figure that
out but the clock is ticking because we are on March 11th and we are only 15 days away 15 days away
from opening day we're going to talk about Dustin May 2nd started the spring which happened
against Washington that's coming the way next on locked on cards hey this is Jeff

it's at the link in the show notes to learn more all right time for the three stars of Wednesday's
game and we're going to start with the starter makes sense right Dustin May is going to get my
number one start a star of the game and this is despite having what you know I would consider a
a rougher time in this game than he then he had in his debut really a lot of the effort that he
had to put forth in this one was in the first inning the cartels stop free agent acquisition kind
of had a long first inning and it started with what is the biggest no no lead off walks that's
right lead off walk to new nia's who ends up stealing second base although the broadcast thought he
was out but you know there are no challenges uh during spring training for that kind of stuff so
safe was the call so we remained on second base then nats young stud james wood ended up uh
grounding out to first base to move the runner over then you get a double off of burly's glove
brings in the run to make it one to nothing tail is old as time lead off lock comes around the score
next guy grounded to win it's short who tried to get the runner going to third again the broadcast
thought he was out but again no challenges safe was the call made it first and third with one
out may would strike out the next hitter which was Ruiz on on a heater up in the zone actually out of
the zone it was way up uh but that would take him to 19 pitches in the inning so Ali came out and
pulled them from the game let Ian Badeau come then finish that inning which he did by getting
a ground out from the next hitter and I know people were freaking out on line about this when
they saw that he was out of the game in the first inning and it was all part of the plan it's just
19 pitches let's let's get him down and get him arrested real quick and you know you can do that
that reentry role in spring training so may comes back out of the second he got the nats one two
three with another strike out this time he did it on a change up to the left he mervis to win the
second and the 30 allows one out one out walk but erase that on a double play then in the fourth
he allowed a rocket single to the lead off hitter after he left a sinker over the heart of the play
lucky that one didn't go over the wall but then he got to fly outs in another strike out this time
he got the whiff on the sweeper and that ended his day final line three and two thirds innings
one run two hits two walks three strike out 61 pitches Velo resting comfortably around 96 97
but he was also touching 98 multiple times and most importantly not hurt no injury concerns
after the game so that that's huge right second serve the game goes to Nathan Church who had
a one of only five cardinal sits also stole his first base of the spring which is great
and it sure feels like Nathan Church is going to be the answer while large new bars out it just
feels like it makes a lot of sense he's got you know the upside defensively he's got the arm he's
got speed defensively wise he's far far to way better than for means to JC and Velasquez plus
it's not like he has sucked with the bat I mean he's been fine he's hitting 263 he's got the one
home run three RBI's four walks four strike outs a stolen base does a little bit of everything
if newt was in there and I told you that was newt's numbers through this point in spring training
you'd be cool with that you'd be more than happy be like all right newt's on his way not bad
so why would we think differently about Nathan Church who's getting a nice long look
as the possible starting left fielder for the Cardinals while large newt bars out third star
of the game I'm going to give this one to Gorman we talked about this already but it's too
wild RBI single perhaps the Nolan Gorman for for that at bat I'd also like to give some love to
JJ Weatherhole who was on two more times with the walk got hit by a pitcher we all had to
because we were worried that he'd hit all right it was the same pitcher Cavali and he had hit church
and then he hit Weatherhole and obviously both of them are from the left side so we're like
all right dude stop it quit hitting our left hand to hitters but sigh of relief everybody was
fine they both stayed in the game weatherhole stole his second base of the spring in this one as
well a lot of discussion on the broadcast about where they want to hit JJ when opening day rolls
around there was an argument whether he should be first whether he should be second
the answer is yes get him up there at the top of the order personally I like him in the lead-off
spot for now because he's the one guy who is it chasing and seems to be willing to let the game
come to him and he'll walk if you want to walk in he's not in hurry he doesn't need to swing all
the time you know Mason win as much as we love him and it seems like they want to get him to be the
lead-off guy he just doesn't walk enough he does it and JJ's also got that power thread you know
Mason win sure he could put one over the wall here and there but JJ's got legit pop and for him
to have you know the the good batter's eye to be able to put the ball over the wall and be dangerous
in that lead-off spot as well as when he does get on base if he does walk or however he gets on
as a threat to steal a bag that's a lead-off header so I am kind of on board with him batting
lead-off from the get-go so we'll see what ends up happening uh Bolton was good again on
Wednesday at least until the very end when Marino gave up a couple runs of the ninth but uh
Justin Bruehl Matt's Fonson Ryan Fernandez three shut out innings for those guys each also
struck out a hitter Ryan Fernandez continues to look better and better ever since that first
bat outing he had in the spring and as far as observations from Tuesday six to one loss against
the Metz goes you had the Velazquez home run which is a bomb uh Victor Scott one for three got thrown
out stealing although again there was no replay but it looked safe to me I was shocked they called
them out but the team managed just one run on three hits there was not a lot of offense there once
again reliever Riley O'Brien had a really rough outing walking four and just two thirds of an
inning uh only 11 of his 27 pitches were thrown at strikes uh also threw a wild pitch like that was
a mess for for Riley O'Brien but haven't heard anything about him being hurt so that's good uh
but that was just his second appearance since coming back from that cap issue that he suffered
earlier in camp uh Packey Norton continues to be a wonderful story after being out of baseball
basically for what two years has been trying to come back and uh he threw another shut out
inning in that game on Tuesday he's now made five appearances and hasn't a lot of run
has given up just two hits it hasn't walked a single hitter and he's got six strikeouts
Packey Norton does he make the roster can he be uh the left-handed reliever the the
the Cardinals are searching for we'll find out uh Cardinals announced contract agreements with 29

thanks again for making lots on cardinals your first listen of the day thank you for making
locked on the number one sports podcast network cardinals announced that they have signed 29 of
their pre arbitration service time players to contracts for the 26 season and that short stop
Mason win has opted to have his contract renewed hold on I'll explain this the team now has all
players on its 40 player major league roster under contract for the 26 season here are your names
Joshua bias Leo Bernal Justin Bruell Nathan Church Jimmy Crooks Hunter Dobbins Jose Firmin
Ryan Fernandez Richard Fitz Gordon Grassofo Tinkins Yvonne Herrera Cooper Jirpie Kyle Leahy
Bryson Mott Michael McGreevy Riley O'Brien Pedro Pahas says our Prieto Matt Pushard Nick Raquet
Dakota Robi Chris Roycroft Thomas J C Victor Scott the second George Soriano Matt Sponson
Brian Torres and Jordan Walker so what is the Mason win part of all of this as explained by Derrick
Wool the wonderful sports writer at STL today.com who covers the cardinals for them so if you haven't
followed him on Twitter you should do it because you got a lot of info smart man Mason win this
is how he explains it says Mason win was the only player who had his contract renewed by the
Cardinals this season and what that means is they could not agree on a salary for 2026 and the
team can impose its salary on him as a pre-arb player he said the Cardinals use a formula to set
the salaries for all the players with zero to three years of service time that formula used to be
publicly available fan grabs war it's changed somewhat since MLB started the bonus pool team runs
numbers makes an offer most of them agree some players reject the offer so that when and if
they go to arbitration hearings the team cannot argue that the player agreed to that salary
player can argue otherwise in the past the Cardinals impose the penalty on renewals of $10,000
less than their initial offer now what does this mean well it means that they couldn't come
do an agreement and so they just kind of move forward you have seen other teams around the league
lock up their young players the long-term deals before they go to arbitration they essentially
buy out the arbitration years and on paper Mason win appears to be a guy that maybe the Cardinals
should think about trying to do that with he and Jay Jay weather hold are the two that in my eyes
make the most sense right now but I don't even know if they're considering trying something like
that at this moment considering we've got a new CBA coming in 2027 and Lord only knows what's
going to happen with that because we don't know if there's going to be a lockout we don't know if
there's going to be a salary floor a salary cap we don't know we don't know what the heck's going
to happen with this thing but there's going to be some fighting get ready for it but um so I don't
know if the Cardinals are even thinking about that stuff yeah where they're like well let's find
out what we got going on here with CBA and then let's come doing agreement because you know if Mason
wins offense comes around the way that most people think it will and the first half of last season
was a glimpse of what he can do when healthy he loses the knee last year basically and he's a
shell of a player in the second half same thing kind of happened to another stud shortstop
alley daily cruise with the reds had this monster first half everything was going great gets hurt
and can't do hardly anything that he was really good at through the entire second half go look
at the numbers and um you know it not having one of your two legs underneath you while you play
makes life a little bit difficult so um we know he's got the club we know he's got the arm the mentality
he's the kind of guy that just looks like he's going to be a superstar um we just need the
bat to do what it did in the first half last season and have him do that through a whole season
and then you I think we'll have more people start to believe in Mason win as an all-around player
but he and Jay Jay are the guys that I would be looking at uh I don't know is there anyone else
that you guys think they need to lock up by offering something big despite not having much
with track record in the big leagues let me know in the comments down below also this was announced
that 12 members of the Cardinals Hall of Fame are expected to be in attendance for opening day
you know how big a deal this is as he Smith's going to be there my man uh Edgar Rinsor Rhea
Tony LaRusa Ray Langford Ted Simmons Vince Coleman John Tudor Jason Isringhausen
Willie McGee Mark McGuire Al Ravowski Scott Rowan um it's quite a list there and speaking of
Willie uh MLB the show again had him in a Giants jersey and then as a member of the Giants
for his first car part of their card as part of their veteran series of cards so I can only
imagine that he's going to get a Cardinals Willie McGee card for the game at some point um kind of
got hoes last year not getting a Cardinals version of Scott Rowan I feel like that everybody
else got one like Toronto Reds Phillies Cardinals didn't get one for whatever reason so that was
rude but we got Aussie we got Teddy Simmons last year we got McGuire in a Cardinals uh Beltron
got a Cardinals card Larry Walker got a Cardinals Card last year so I guess it can't complain too
much but that would be cool to see William McGee back in the game that would be a lot of fun so
