Hour 1: Yankees Game 1 Starter? Mustache Conversation

So we are gonna go through the top moments for each New York sports team over that 25 year period. And some of them are not really great moments. Like, and here's the other thing. We're gonna take you through like what has really mattered over the last 25 years. And what has really mattered over the last 25 years is my own list and how I directly have affected and frankly kept the station going. What? Those are the most important things that have happened over the last 25 years. So you're gonna get those as well. 1:02and the chat later on, we'll find out who's got no more excuses. And we will also, in just a few minutes, find someone who actually backs up my Jets argument. And I don't feel better about it. I'll explain with that shortly as well. The Yankees, I will start here. If you don't hand Ken Schlippler the ball on Game 1 or any game where it's the most important game of the year, I think you're really missing the boat. I'm sorry, there's really not much more to talk about here. I get it with the amount of experience that is on this staff between cold, between freed, between everybody else. The number that is jumping out to me is 19. 19 times. 19 times this season, Kam Schlippler has given up one or fewer runs, not earned runs, one or fewer runs in a game.

2:03The man has been outstanding in every way. He is the Sai Young Award winner. He's going to be, I don't know how else you could look at it. And then while I know that what Garrett cold is capable of, while I know what Max Fried is capable of, just please be honest with yourself for a moment. Is there anybody else that you would rather have on the mound? And I'm going to lay out your argument here for you in saying it. Because when it comes to October and what you're trying to do, Kam Schlippler is the guy that translates to October for the Yankees. It's not, October is not about lifetime achievement awards. October is not about who has the biggest contract. I don't care about who's won the Sai Young before. I care about the guy that has been the best this year. And to me, it's not close.

3:04It's really not. You think about what some of his numbers are this season. His ERA plus, and I don't love getting into all the little weeds on edelocks, but ERA plus is basically just this. How much better is he than the normal guy who would be there? And the normal guy would have an ERA plus of 100. If you're below that, you're worse than what the replacement would be. If you're above that, you're better than what the replacement would be. So obviously you want to be above it. His baseline is 100 there, right? His is 202. His ERA is 2.04. His whip is under one. He's got over 200 strikeouts in 170 innings. His wins above replacement is six as a starting pitcher.

4:09He is the best starting pitcher on the Yankees right now. And you can try to make any argument you want. When I am setting up what my rotation looks like in the playoffs, I don't worry about what the contract is or what the guy has done so many other times before when I have someone who has been this dominant. This kind of dominance translates over to October. This kind of dominance is the kind of dominance that lets you believe that someone can shut the door on another team completely. And I would expect that to be the case here with Schlittler. I don't know how you try to go in another way. Cole has been good, but his war this year is roughly half of what that is for Schlittler. Max Fried has been very good, but there are still concerns there. From a health standpoint, of course, there are still concerns there. He's got a bone bruise now.

5:10He's already missed time this season. And you're still working back with his workload here. It's not I'm worried or I'm hopeful that he gets back to himself with Schlittler. Schlittler himself has been absolutely amazing all season long. So when I look at all of it and the strikeout rate is just elite, all of that translates over to October. The dude strikes out basically a third of the hitters that he faces. I mean, that's well above Cole. That's well above Fried. You're going to sit there and say the kids got lucky? No. He misses more bats than anybody else in this rotation. And he does it by a considerable amount. And that's what October's like. I mean, what was the big knock on the Yankees in the World Series

6:11that the Dodgers took advantage of and then made fun of them for after the fact? Now, just put the ball in play. They'll screw it up. They'll find a way to mess it up. Schlittler doesn't let you put the ball in play. Please explain to me why anybody else should get the ball when the Yankees season is on the line. Of course, he should pitch in a game one of a wild card series. Of course, he should be set up to pitch twice in the division series. Of course, he should be set up to pitch not necessarily start three times, but pitch in three games during a ALCS or a World Series. He is the best that they have. I'm not worried about managing a resume. I'm worried about managing a guy that I'm not even worried about. I'm worried about the only thing that you could ever call into question is the fact that he really hasn't been there in a big, big situation before for this team.

7:15But I still liked what I saw enough in his history to believe that he's going to be good enough. And so I asked you this question quite simply. Is there anybody else you'd rather have on the mound right now than Cam Schlittler? Is there anybody else among that group who absolutely shuts down the opponent at the level that he has all season long? Post-seasonated experience doesn't really bother me all that much, because what he does is he doesn't require hitters to cooperate with him to get them out. Like he doesn't, he's not ever going to be one of these guys that's going to defend, depend on everything else around him. 99 swinging miss, that stuff tends to travel and it tends to make a difference in the playoffs.

8:19So is Cam Schlittler the guy that you definitively hand the ball to in the playoffs? 800, 919, 3776? Game on the line. Would you rather have Cole or Schlittler? Tom Bauer, I put it to you as a Yankee fan right now. Am I way off on this? I can't say that I'm way off on this with the numbers that he has put up this season. But just seeing, and again, it's the angels last night, I know that, but 19 times this year, one runner less. You almost can't do better than that. No. Answer me, Tom. Yeah, hang on, I'm answering you. Come down. Come down. Everybody, everybody come down. Oh, listen, I, listen, I mean, listen, thanks Joe. Logic would tell you that that might be the best Joe Leo time drop of all time. There are times I find myself scratching my head a little bit when Joe's on the board, and I trust him now. We've built a relationship, but there are times maybe we're forcing that one down. Everybody's throw it a little bit. That could not have been better put Joe Kudos.

9:20Yeah, I give Joe a well deserved round of applause for that one. I think he could just cut that up right there, what you just didn't try to give him around of applause because that was awkward. Anyway, go ahead. I am the king of awkward, but anyway, yeah, Kim Schleitler would be logically the number one, the game one starter, if the postseason were to begin right now, although I would argue that there's certainly a case for Garry Cole because, even though Kim Schleitler is a saw young this year, Garry Cole still has the experience that matters tremendously when it comes to the postseason. Kim Schleitler had a great postseason last year, what he did to Boston was incredible. It was one of the best postseason pitching performances I've seen from a Yankee in quite a long time. Yeah, but thanks for making the argument. Yes, Garry Cole still has the value that he provides that could help the Yankees get over the hump of a game one. He has the experience. I'm not saying Cole's not good, and I'm not saying that Cole's done.

10:20Okay, I'm just saying that Schleitler has been so far and above him. Yes, and I wouldn't argue with that for this year. But again, when you look at playoffs, the number one thing you always look for and talk about when you're bringing up somebody in the playoffs is, what is their experience like in the postseason? Garry Cole's that proven commodity. Kim Schleitler, we've seen it and he can win the Saigon. I think if that's pretty much staple shot, I think the Yankees decisions already made if that's the case. I don't think you would be able to not run Kim Schleitler out there as a Saigon winner, which obviously won't be announced at the end of the season. And argue that he shouldn't be the game one starter. But all I'm saying is Garry Cole puts up a very strong argument that he could be. Let's get the comments here going in the chat. Give me cam says, blast one. I know Cole, he's going to make a costly mistake and get ticked off about it around the fourth inning. I don't think that's particularly fair to Garry Cole. It's not that Schleitler is not capable of making a mistake.

11:22Of course he is. But I think that you have to be at least fair to the situation to acknowledge how well Cole has pitched this year and how well. We've seen freed pitch. The problem is like they both been banged up at times. Right? You're still wondering when not wondering with with freed your wandering a little bit more about the health than you are with Cole. But Schleitler has just been on such another level this year. Let's see here. Jonathan Kennegsburg. Tom makes a cactus seem interesting. Tom your response to that. Who said that Jonathan Toningberg? Yeah. That sucks to be him. Why don't you just say a few John? Did Tom ever think about wearing a Darth Vader mask? Why would I make Tom wear a Darth Vader mask? Tom looks good today. No, I think people are trying to say that I look hideous, which I don't disagree with them. No, I wouldn't say you look hideous. Have you come to grips with what your future is? And we'll get a little deeper into this later.

12:24In other words, you know what's going on in your head, right? Yeah, I know. How long are you going to ride this out? As long as I'm 29, you're 24, you're 26. I'm 27. You're 27 right now. And I mean, the building is happening. Oh, yeah, it's happening. I've seen my mom's side of the family. It doesn't get any better than then. So how long are you going to ride this out and continue to try to fake like it's not happening? I will try and fake it until I can't no longer make it. Which will probably probably only be a handful of years. What's that? Are you going to do any combing over? Any combing over? Not of the ball spot. No. I'd really like you to come closer to the camera. I don't think anybody wants that. Well, no, I'd like to examine the top of your head. If you could stand right behind Joe Leo and just take me, let me take a look at that. Oh, boy, yeah, we've got, we've got a two car garage in the front.

13:24We've got a five head going and then we've got the spot in the back. You know what you are? Your car line circle, a circle 27. That's what you. Yeah, I don't know if I want to go down that route. I hate to tell you. And here's the thing too. Everybody come like, I don't like the way I look in the studio either. It doesn't help that we get. I don't like the way you look. It's just I want you to. Here's the thing, Tom. I don't ever like seeing people live in denial about what the future holds when it comes to hair. Yes. So I want you to be a confident, aggressive man and not worried about what people are thinking about. Well, listen, I'm not worried about that at all. I'm not going to go out there and wear a hat every day like Rick D. P. H. O. is because he's balding right exactly. Oh, I'm bracing. Rick is so insecure that he has to do that for himself. He could sit there and live in the denial about it. But if you had to guess, if you had to wager right now and Joe Leo, I'll bring you in on this as well. If you were to wager, does Rick D. P. H. O. in his home somewhere have some sort of monoxidil, some sort of Rogaine, which is the same thing, some sort of hair,

14:35saving product that is in his home at the moment. I mean, I, I would think so. I so much showed to the fact that if the house went up in flames, he might run back in to get it. Do we agree? Disagree where do we come down on this? I would, I would say that it's purchased. I don't know if he's used it yet. No, I don't have to say that he's used it. I just said about if I walk into that house and I go through all of his beauty products, which are going to be many. I would say it's in the drawer. Yeah, I would say it's in a drawer somewhere in the home. Do we think it's in a drawer behind glass like breaking case of emergency type of thing? There's no question that's coming. There's no question. See, here's what I also want to bring up because it doesn't help me out either. There is a light directly above my head when we're in the studio and it just makes the balding accentuated. Tom, listen, I tried going down this road for a long time too. Let's not blame lighting. Okay. Lighting is not the issue. Oh, I'm saying is it doesn't help?

15:35Aren't we doing no more excuses? Can we put that for the first one? Tom is the one who's doing that. So I guess we'd have to ask him. Tom, no more excuses for the hair. We're going to do that as a segment here later in the show when it comes to the, you know, all the baseball teams and the jets and giants as a season is starting. Who's got no more excuses? Maybe we should start asking the hairline time. Wow. All like I said, I'm going to think it until I no longer can make it. That's what that's what I'm seeking with as my story. 800 919 3776. You could also put this on the pole. Should Tom ride it out with the hair as long as he can or should be he accept his fate and shave it all off now? 800 919 3776. Also want to spend some time here on the jets. I, I have really questioned myself over the last week or so with the negativity that has been surrounding the jets for the upcoming season.

16:35Because as I was talked about, the over under is five and a half. I put my money where my mouth is with the six games that the jets have that are already to me easily classified as winnable. There's no doubt to me that the jets are going to hit six unless they have massive injury problems along the way. But there have been so many that whether it's the top 100 players in the league and the jets not having one player on the entire list of the only team in the league without one player. When the dolphins, the Cardinals, I mean, you've got some bad teams out there and the jets are the only one without one player not even a player on the snubbless for pizza. And the belief that they're just going to be an awful football team this season, even my guy Jordan Reed who is incredible when it comes to evaluating draft prospects does an amazing job for ESPN. Even he, when projecting next year's first round recently said that he expects the jets to have the third overall pick.

17:38In other words, they're going to be the third worst team in football. I don't see that, but there are a couple of people now who were starting to come out and back me up. This is not any sort of delusion about what they are. It's just it's going to be market improvement. It's hard for me to say that there won't be again health is always the X factor. But in theory, there's enough talent here for there to be market improvement. So that would certainly look like seven if not eight wins. If the jets won seven, it's acceptable. If they won eight, it's successful. So I've been looking for people over the last couple of days who might support what I think and make me feel a little bit better about where this season is headed for them as opposed to just operating under the assumption that the jets are going to screw it up.

18:42Well, I found that person. His name is Dan Orlovsky and is also there's a second guy there and his name is Dominique Foxworth. And here they are. I believe on the Dominique Foxworth show and not only do I think they're going to be okay this year. I really believe that this is a place that next year quarterback, whether it's a proven guy a baker may feel does it get an extension or a young quarterback say to go. I actually look forward to going play for the jets because because of this surrounding pieces. I think the other part is they got tackles to like that. That happens. I think it's set up to first round picks. They have quite a nice nest right there waiting for a quarterback to take it over in Geno Smith is average to slightly above average quarterback, which will help those players develop. It's one things that we I think take for granted is you need good quarterback play in order to help the other players get the reps they need to get back. So they'll be even better next year. And I say this respectfully if Garrett Wilson had a real starting quarterback that was a top 15 guy. He would be in the conversations with the Jamar Chases and the Justin Jefferson's and the Pukin to go. I think he's that good of a player. They just have to find their guy.

19:49See here's the problem. This doesn't make me feel better when I have Dan back in me up when he makes that comment about Garrett Wilson. Garrett Wilson is not on the level of those three guys. And I don't care who the quarterback is who's throwing it to him. I don't care if it's Matthew Stafford who Dan said the other day. If he wins a Super Bowl this year is the top five quarterback of all time, which is just silly dumb and made absolutely no sense on Dan's part. And I it's hard for me to not remove any sort of a bias that Dan would have there considering like Matthew Stafford's like one of his best friends in the world. And I love Dan to death, but that I just I can't take you seriously. So it doesn't make me feel better when he has to tag on something like that comment at the end backing me up. But here's a ridiculous part of it. Garrett Wilson's a great player. He's not a top. He's not Jamar Chase. He's not Justin Jefferson. I don't care who the quarterback is. He's not those guys. Those guys are a whole nother level. Whole nother level. Now having said that the best part of what I just heard is what Dominique had to say that the jets have the tackles that fashion and member is two young guys that they're not going to have to pay here for at least like fashion.

21:04They won't have to pay until at least after this year and the money wouldn't kick in for a couple of years and bamboo for a couple of more years after that. Then the jets are really in a much better place offensively. I cannot wait to see Kenyan Sedeek on the field. I cannot wait. And I know it's not going to look great early, but I think by the second half of the year, if healthy, Sedeek could be a major difference maker for the jets. A major matchup nightmare. I cannot wait to see breeze hall on the field behind that offensive line and what that can look like. He got over a thousand yards last season. That doesn't mean nearly as much for a running back as it used to. But the jets did the right thing very under the radar and paid him accordingly and he was on board with what they paid him. The jets have really done they I'm not going to say they've done a fantastic job of everything.

22:08But what they have done is taken a new approach and that has been necessary. The new approach is we're not going to go out and get stupid. We're not going to go out and overpay guys who were beyond their prime or pay top of the market money and overpay the great players in the league and put ourselves in a bad spot. We're going to go and get the guys like Joseph O'Suy, like Kingsley and Eggbar, who are going to help and fit the Dylan Parham thing on the offensive line. I'm not convinced about yet because he was part of what was one of historically one of the worst aligns of all time. Geno is going to have a lot to work with here. A lot to work with. So we get involved in all of this. Does Cam Schletler definitively get the ball for you in the most important game of the year?

23:09That's question one are the jets actually doing things the right way under the radar right now question two and I also want to know about your top moments. Whether it's New York sports, whether it's the station, whatever it is over the last 25 years in short order, I am going to give you what really are the top most important things in the history of the S. P. N. New York over the last 25 years and the history of the New York sports. Because they all involve me in some way or another and frankly, whether I was at the other place or I was here, I was directly affecting everything that goes on at this station. So the success of it. If you don't look at it and think that I'm a major part of it, which clearly the station does not they've handed Michael a two hour show with Don the transmitter I get it. Don the first voice ever heard on the station then Peter and Alan who have been around forever getting all been out of shape so you know complain.

24:17Well listen, you know that that loud mouth gets what it wants squeaky wheel gets degree grease and all of a sudden those guys have got an anniversary show today. We're going to throw you the top moments in Carlin history is opposed to you know ESPN New York and the effects that I've had here and I'm not an arrogant guy, but I don't logically know how you can leave some of these things out of it. It's not great and I know from when I speak when did we decide as a society collectively that mustaches were back or that were somehow cool or attractive because there are very few people on the plant. I would argue that there are fewer people on the planet who are capable of looking good with a mustache than are capable of playing in the national football league right now. So that's what 53 man roster 30 teams 1500 players 2000 players. I believe there are less than 2000 people alive who would look who look good with a mustache. Joe Leo your thoughts. I would agree and one of those people that actually does look good with a mustache is Julian Kushner who works at the station. I can't picture that. I would agree with that Julian pulls the mustache up like I've never seen Julian without a mustache and maybe that's the the knock on the situation is when I've seen you without the mustache and you grow it.

26:35Then it's not good but I've seen Tom Selleck without a mustache and I've seen him with it and Tom Selleck is better off with it. He looks amazing with a mustache. Now what about Jefferson who works in our here no no no no and is Jefferson running our ESPN New York YouTube page today is indy commented on it Jefferson no no. And if the younger women now are into that I get it you ride the wave so to speak but like as a long term decision no but like how am I taking anything seriously about what Jefferson is deciding to do. I love him I love him he's a great guy. It's got very successful life too. Very successful life. Oh yeah he's doing bartending he's got a great relationship going on. I'm sure you're going on into a rich family let's be clear. Yes he's bartending he's earning money on his own he's out trying to make it happen on his own but you know I love him you're not exactly working without a net. Wow.

27:36I mean the guy the guy is going to every fish and goose show under the planet are on the planet and at the same time like he goes to Augusta he goes to the masters he goes to you know the US open out in Shenacock Hills I'm sure he'll be at the US open. The US open tennis tickets are like thousands of dollars are you going to be surprised you know what Jefferson is and Dan Grasse and I have had this discussion and I mean it in a complimentary way Jefferson is the modern day Kramer he is the Gen Z Kramer because he will just say things that will be Kramer asked like you would say to Jefferson you'd be talking about showers and he'd say I take baths like that's a Kramer thing that that he would do. The other day Dan said something to me along the lines of Jefferson had mentioned you know Dan mentioned the hand foot and mouth disease that Noah Cinderguard had and how ridiculous that was with the medicine Jefferson's like I've had that.

28:41I mean like that's what Jefferson is and I mean that in the best way possible I wish I could live the life of Jefferson that is a dream life and I admire him for that but the mustache thing man don't ruin it don't ruin it am I alone on this. I don't think we're alone on this to add to the Kramer ask thing with with Jefferson the way he enters rooms to is very Kramer ask yes yes if you look at listen I know from when I speak on mustaches I've had one once and I had it for roughly. Three and a half minutes and why I had it was because in 2016 when Ryan Fitzpatrick had not signed his contract with the jets I was doing a loud mouth on S and why and John Hein and I my co-host at the time John tremendous guy from the Howard Stern show were growing out our beards in protest until Fitzpatrick signed his contract and he found out that he was a great man.

29:55And he finally signed right for the season so they brought a barber in to shave off our beards on the air and the barber not at my request shaved off the beard but just left the mustache and I'm going to hold the picture right up to the camera right now that's incredible you're too. You should keep point to tell me that I don't look like Andy Reed right there can look like Paul board mock up yes exactly exactly I would say Andy Reed or every single Jersey State troop or I've ever seen in my life that's a good point they're probably in better shape though right I would I would venture to say they have smaller heads the last thing I would say is I I look like ironically since this is out right now I look like I'm. Somebody that Chris Hansen would meet in the kitchen and that's that's not a good thing so my point is I know what it looks like what it is none of us there's less than 2000 people on the planet that can really pull off a mustache in fact time let's put that on the poll are there more people in the NFL

31:13or are there more people on the planet who can pull off a mustache are there more people on the planet who are capable of playing in the NFL or capable of playing or capable of playing off a mustache now can I bring one comment from the YouTube section into this conversation please because I think it's something that raises some thoughts and I don't know if you like it where is it this is from Sean notice respect at the end of the day we're getting fashion fashion and grooming advice from carlin yeah you are in this case you are I feel very confident in it because I know what bad looks like okay I know what bad looks like see it all the time right in the mirror I'm not going to try to admit anything else I'm not going to try to build it up to be anything else that's what it is I know what it looks like and if you don't look good I know it because I see it all the time and I say it with love because I want better things for those of you who are capable of looking better I can't do much with this I'm stuck nothing here is changing right like I can lose the weight

34:27I had honestly it's been a bit of a summer lately so I forgot that you called right after I thought maybe I hadn't heard you and it's not that I didn't think that you were going to be with us and listening but I I also know the fondness that we both have for Bart. Yep and I love the show and I haven't I haven't I need to reach out to Bart here because I haven't talked to him here in a couple of weeks I've been kind of laying low on that but there's been a lot going on but I I've talked to him a few times since everything happened he's my I love no death he's my guy it's me too it's me too carlin it's not anyway but I told you when I called after I told you right after I took like a week and then I called. Carlin you know you guys got me I love the show member it's been crazy didn't I just want to say I just move my daughter back into college to senior year can't believe it I'm like oh right so that can't be kind of busy to but not that locked and loaded back every week you know the season

35:29about the start so I'm ready to roll you know me Carlin no I'm here I love you guys and I'm always going to be here and you know the same thing with Bart like the same thing with Bart like if he goes somewhere you know I'll try to support him too but this is my he's on my two show you get me this is this is my show and I have to know this is my show and I'm here you got me don't worry about that at all I love you guys I agree screwing the mornings anyway how you doing to us but I have to say something else carlin let me tell you something you know I'm gonna be very honest you know how I am Carlin forget the whole mustache thing even though you write most guys can't pull it off and I will like literally like cut you off like people got it and they look crazy but let me just talk about you Carlin you're not walking around here looking like some mediocre bum number one maybe one oh make no mistake make no mistake test okay I know what what we've got here and I appreciate that that's very nice of you to say I I pride myself in knowing what I am and I don't sit here and think that like I think it's more attractive to know what you are

39:53black yeah I don't know if you've known this the young guy had a he's had a 50 game stretch where they were dreadful and guys like Schlippler were part of the reason they were actually around 500 but they just think it's but they just think the score more when Cole's pitching and I don't know why that is but they know whatever don't up against the right right but I think all could get hold of down and it just seems that the offense tends to hit when he's on the mound but also I want to talk about the bolder issue I went through it also in my 20s and my advice is I want the turkey it's amazing things there really got it had full hair right now yeah yeah it's it's really painless the recovery is is not bad at all within six months you get new hair sprouting out and so hang on a second it's really a special these days they your hair actually grows in or it's just a hair replacement process nothing so what they do is they take hair from the sides of your head which is like more prone to boldness right and they replace it on the top of your head and they strategically place it in areas that where people look at you from the front you have you look like you have a full head of hair

41:15gotcha okay see here's a thing around and I appreciate your candor and your willingness to talk about this and the fact that you went to turkey and they do amazing things over there Tom have you thought about maybe pulling up some of the money and making a little trip over to Istanbul no that hasn't crossed my mind yet I feel like the plane ticket for that would be very very expensive in the process would be to it would be but a fact that it's in turkey it's cheaper that it would be here the thing I would ask you is though have you ever considered knowing what is in front of you any sort of hair replacement system not knocking it if that's what you decide to do that certainly up to you but with what the future holds are you going to live and denial about the situation or are you going to just take it all off and let it just fly no I'm accepting of the situation I haven't decided yet whether or not I'm just going to let it all hang there or if I'm just going to go completely bald

42:16I don't know if I just want to go I guess I would be all natural biggest adjustment that you have to make immediately from going to having hair to bald is that when you sweat it's everywhere oh boy like there's you don't realize how much work that hair is doing in holding up the sweat yes see you you just made my argument right now why should I should keep the hair as long as possible I don't I don't want that feeling I know but it's not it listen the guys who were hanging on we know and we want better things for you we want better things for you so if you decide to go that route I wouldn't hold it against you but I certainly would say like there's something to be said for acknowledging where you are and what you are and how to make that work to your advantage if I went that route would you encourage me to just go completely bald on the show so that way we can get some views out of it
