Hour 3: Denzel Ward joins Travis Kelce in Cleveland Guardians Ownership

It's Ken Weymann, 105-7, the fan of Baltimore. As the Ravens get ready to head to Indianapolis to take on the Colts and can that young, unproven offensive line is it going to be a concern for Lamar Jackson and the rest of those weapons that the Ravens have? Well, I think we're concerned obviously. Joe von Goen, I think has 11 snaps to his credit before he starts the game on Sunday. He beat Al Ysim Posick because you guys know him, but I don't think he's completely healthy. And frankly, I don't know that he's the right fit for this line, but you've got him at center and then Venga Lone, who I think is going to be really good. But again, he's a rookie. But it's got to be better guys. It's got to be better than last year when Fahle Le and Andrew Vore, he's were at guard and they were both just awful.

1:01So I know they lose Linderbaum, but the center can just be OK. The guards are going to be so much better than they were a year ago that I think it's going to be in that positive. But it's one of these weird things where because nobody plays during the preseason, we're not going to really know for sure until they get it going for real on Sunday. Obviously, the coaching staff change has probably been a hot topic for you guys. Has anybody worried about the loss of Todd Munkin? Worried? No, because I love Munkin. Talking trash about the Munkin, man. I'm telling him. Yeah, I'm a big Munk guy. I think that the whole thing got stale. And most of that is harbors related, John Arbor. But I'll miss him. I love his press conferences. It gave us a lot of stuff to talk about every week. So you guys get to have multiple times a week now. I'm jealous. But I think we're more excited about what Declan Doyle is going to bring. There's a lot of it's interesting. There's a lot of excitement about Declan Doyle and a lot of excitement, frankly, about if you

2:02mentor running the defense. So it's more excitement and concern. Are you expecting any kind of a drop off from Derek Henry going into your number 11 and age 32? Or do you expect another gigantic year out of the tailback? I think he's a unicorn every year. We talk about the wheels are going to come off. And then only does this finish second, the league in rushing. So until he shows me there's going to be a drop off, I'm not expecting it. I know I talked to a lot of people last year who expected it. And he got off to a slow start in Park of the Line just stunk. And then again, he finished second, the league in rushing. So I think he's unique. He's one of one. I kind of lebronish in the way he takes care of his body. So no, I'm not expecting it. Obviously it comes for everybody mortality is always looming. But no, I expect him, especially with Lamar looking healthy. I expect Derek Henry to have a big year.

3:04With new Ed coach, Jesse Mentor. Again, there's no honeymoon. There's high expectations. Is there also the expectation and officially in that's plagued him over the last couple of years? I don't think it's as much last year as it was certainly the year before the late game collapses defensively. Oh, it did. Can it happen last year week one in Buffalo? Why not through the whole season? I just in my memory, obviously, I'm not paying attention as close to the Ravens as they am the Browns. I know it happened week one. I'm like, it didn't happen with the same frequency last year's it did the year before. Did it? I might be wrong. I might be wrong. No, not with the same frequency because frankly, they weren't good. But that's the same week one in Buffalo. Basically sent to season sideways. And I think it's been a mantra for Jesse Mentor be your best when your best is needed. And that's referring in part to those fourth quarter collapses. And yes, I think the new coaching staff, a lot of fans are going to be paying attention in the fourth quarter

4:04when they have a lead to see if they can close out games because they couldn't. Basically under John Harball, the last few years, they had trouble closing games in the fourth quarter. Who's winning the Super Bowl this year? Is it shocking to say the Rams? You're not to say it. I mean, who cares if it's shocking? I just I they seem to have an embarrassment of riches. So I'm going to go Rams. They like they added Miles Garrett and brought Aaron Donald back and the MVP is a quarterback. Obviously, injuries can factor in, but assuming help, I'm going to say Rams. Will you tune into tomorrow night's game just because it's in Australia? I'm going to tune in tomorrow night's game because the NFL and I don't have to watch the Orioles who stink because they're often more. Ken Weiman, one of five seven of the fans in Baltimore. 5:07All right, what type of challenge does Baker present for that defense that, as you said, Moe, can't be any worse, so it must be better. Yeah, it's going to be at least a little bit better, right? I've got to tackle a little bit better. I think if the Bengals pass rush is what we've seen all throughout training camp, then the Baker Mayfield threat is minimized. If that pass rush that we saw in training camp proves to be a mirage, and then I think he's a problem. Look, it's a Cincinnati secondary where there's still a lot of questions. DJ Turner is an ascending star, and they did go get Brian Cook. But one of their two safeties, Jordan Battle last year, was a bismill. And he's going to be in a starting role this season. Dax Hill on the outside missed a lot of camp. I think there's still legitimate questions about how stable an outside corner he's going to be. And as we've talked about all off season long, for all the work the Bengals did on their team and on their defense, they left linebacker alone. And that was arguably the worst position group they had last year.

6:08And so I need to see improvement from those guys at that position before I believe that any quarterback is in a threat. A few of the hot seat lists, obviously reflecting the Zactailer, is indeed in jeopardy if things go south. Is that something people are monitoring right from the get go? Or you're not too worried about it right now? I would find it hard to believe the Bengals would make. And in season change, it just looked, they've done a lot of things that are completely out of character for this organization. And in its history, the Bengals have made one in season change before in 2003 or in 2000 when they fired Bruce Coslett, replaced him with Dick Lebo. I think at the very least, that Taylor's going to be given a chance to get through the season. I wholeheartedly believe that if this team is on the outside looking in for a fourth consecutive year, not making the postseason, they will have a new head coach. But I would, of the things that they have done that have been shocking, I would move making an in season change with the head coach

7:10at the top of the list. How much better is Schemaar Stewart going to be this year? Well, it's hard to tell because he didn't go through training camp, right? He got injured on the first day and he is back and he is practicing and he is on the 53. But his working season was a wash. And I'm fearful that year two has a very good chance to be a wash just because I don't know if there's anybody on the team who needed to practice reps and needed pre-ceasing games more than Schemaar Stewart and he didn't get any. I know they're really high on him and in the brief winter, since we had a chance to see from him in training camp last year, he certainly showed promise. But that was a training camp setting last summer. That was a long time ago. We haven't seen it in games and so, but there's a lot of hope for what the Bengals might do on the defensive line. But anybody who talks about that group usually doesn't include Schemaar Stewart's name. Who's winning the Super Bowl? You know, I think the Seahawks are like the most slept on Super Bowl champ ever.

8:14I don't see a huge weakness. Obviously, Boi Amoffe is now in Cincinnati. Kenneth Walker is now in Kansas City. You know, nobody views Sam Darlord as an absolute upper cross quarterback. But for all the talk, the Rams are getting Seattle beat him twice in games that counted as slept on Super Bowl champ to me as dangerous. Maybe I'll change my mind by about 1130 tonight, but I like Seattle. That is Moeiger ESPN 1530 in Cincinnati. 9:15to possibly meet them, talk with them, make deals with them. Yeah, if you believe that, then he's just talking sense. Okay. Obviously, this has been unique for you guys in your position to talk Steelers and not have Mike Tomlin to kick around any longer. He's making some interesting comments as well in his new media career. With all that said, is there an excitement level surrounding his replacement from fans? So before I answer that, can I ask you guys just sort of fluently, are you as surprised as I was that apparently the Minecraft thing is legit and the guy who's like Mr. Intensity and football guy was just going home and mindlessly building like this gigantic mega city in that game? No, you went through me for a little while. You have to unwind somehow and there's worse ways for professional football coaches to unwind. What? My kids play Minecraft. My kids play Minecraft and I just I play video games growing up. I'll still mess around with something on the switch or whatever, but like I don't understand

10:16the appeal of that one. It's just I don't know. I have no idea. It's my minute. It's more productive than what Terry Cruz does when he's in front of a computer all night. Is Minecraft is is Minecraft the one? I don't understand. Is Minecraft the one where they make the character and they jump around all over the place? Yeah, and like the blocks look like the graphics look like it's from you know 1996, but that's what everybody super into. Okay. Yeah, they just build and build and build. I don't my kids play it. I don't get it, man. Like that one does not, you know, it doesn't make sense. Give me grand theft auto six or whatever. My one had Nick Chubb as a character and the other one had Jamar Chase as a character. You can do that. That's kind of I guess that's kind of cool. They're mixing. They're mixing things we are into with building, but whatever. I'll answer the question now. I actually do think that there is some excitement like I'll even admit they're going to look different. They're going to be different. Like I think different just for its own sake is something that's interesting, especially when you are the single franchise in all of pro sports that changes the with the least

11:20frequency. Like you say kick around tone, but like that is kind of what would happen. Like it was always what is the angle here, whether it was fair or not. A lot of times it was a lot of the times it wasn't. What is the angle here that comes back somehow to Mike Tomlin and how he is responsible for whatever is going on? And so knowing that the offense is going to look different and that the guy was the head coach now cares way more about that and way more about the quarterback. That's interesting. And I might be in the minority in Pittsburgh, but I'm way more intrigued by how a different defensive coordinator and a different mind on that side of the ball actually impacts what still is a pretty like name studded roster on that side. You know, when you talk about names, TJ what is somebody we had been comparing contrasting to Miles cared for years. And then last year it was just a stark difference. But Miles went into a record setting mode and TJ seemed to go backwards. Are you anticipating that he can regain his terrific play or are you worried about the

12:24future? I think the best argument for him regaining his high level of play or getting closer to where he used to be is that Patrick Graham, that new defensive coordinator I mentioned. According to Watt, at least is going to force him to move around on the formation. And what basically said early in camp, like I can't tell them I don't want to do it. Like the new scheme just forces me to do stuff. Because what was the guy who just says, let me line up against the right tackle and that's what I want to do. That happened pretty early in his pro career and Mike Tomlin, whose I think philosophy could best be described as turn your guys loose to do what you think they do best, especially your best players. He never challenged what on that. I think moving them around could create better and different looks. I will say I do think his days physically of just being a dominant beast who wins because he's better than the guy across from him are done. I think Garrett's kind of, you know, your alpha and omega edge rusher and will Anderson's probably the next guy coming to that spot. But to me, Watt was always a speed rusher more than he was anything else.

13:28And I think when you lose even a small twitch off of that first step, then you're going to become easier to block. And I do think that's what's happened to him over the last, I would say two years. It started to really take place. Has there been much conversation with you and Pony about the tendencies of Kevin Stofanski and being ready for them at all? Not yet because we've mostly been laughing at the fact that it's going to be two of. We had Brian thinner and on. You remember him from the early nine or late nighties early, Ots Falcons, big tall receiver. And he just straight up asked him out what's the mood like in Atlanta because two is the starter. He legitimately said the word somber. How many NFL fan bases do you really go into week one? Oaks, free for turtle. Yeah, our fans are pretty somber because two of one the job by default because the other guy doesn't think his injuries are ready yet. And so he doesn't want to put himself back out there. Like, I think I respect respect to fans. I think he knows how to call offense. I think there is.

14:28We did make a joke yesterday that if B-john gets it going, we can rely on Stofanski to just inexplicably stop giving him the ball like he would when Nick Chubb would be gashing the Steelers for six yards of pop and then they just wouldn't go to him. Well, Chris, that's because we were worried about your dirty players and we didn't want you guys injuring Chubb. Oh, wait, that happened anyway. Yeah, you did that. I, uh, whoa, you guys know that I took a lot of flack for saying in the moment that was a dirty hit. And frankly, that hit still bumps me out because I think Nick Chubb is in like the god tier of favorite players who played for different teams than the Steelers. He was, he was a hall of famer and waiting if he stayed healthy anyway. Um, I, I just think most Steelers fans, the only thing that people are trying to reconcile here is we know Stofanski knows offense. We know to a stinks like really stinks and we can't figure out why it's only a three and a half point spread. And when the people we've had on from Atlanta are sort of echoing the same thoughts like, yeah, this guy's parable. It does make you a little leery of that, that line. All right. What would his financial planner say is a smart investment? I bet it's 10 million bucks. Okay? Cleveland has a smartman who understands the hierarchy in guardian's ownership. Yes. Yes. That's not, you know, John in Wickliffe, who doesn't pay attention to day and day out of guardian's ownership. But John and Wickliffe is probably a big Denzel war fan. Is he going to let who Denzel Ward is and Travis Kelsey is and he doesn't know who Wolflet's are. Yeah, that's true. But is he going to is John and Wickliffe going to give Denzel Ward a piece of his mind at a high school football gamer? I'm more likely to see Denzel Ward in the community than I am to see David Blitzer. Well, here's I think what the biggest misconception is about what this is going to be when Blitzer takes over who also if you look at his portfolio, the 76ers, New Jersey Devils, the commanders, the real salt, real salt lakeers, a real salt. Private equity to a sports fan is a four letter word. Yeah, look at Cronkey, even the way that he has been running things in Denver. What? Like they've been talking about how cheap he is. This is how all these groups, it's going to go down with the exception of the Dan Gilberts of the world, the Jimmy Haslums of the world. We are very fortunate to have two of the owners where they have literally proven they will spend whatever it takes. That is my, that is a minority view point in ownership groups in professional

22:38sports. There's a drawback to that though. They're such fans or their sports that they believe they know those sports very well. And that they're the ones who hold the power. It's the gang and the so that's the drawback of it. But you mean you mentioned the four letter word where you say private equity on that. That's not that's no fun for everybody. I think with David, I do think there will be a splash for David Blitzer because you got to do that. I think we'll make a splash. Yes, he'll make a splash. Here's an extra 30 million will spend and that'll be a one time thing. Because if they if it ends up being a bad one then well, when are we splashing? After the work stop. Yeah, after the work stop, it gets fixed. After the winery after do you have to wait another year or two? Well, I don't know. Is there are we actually going to figure out a salary cap and a salary floor? Because then you got to make all that fit. I'm going to guess no. Well, then continue. I'm just tired of having the same complaints that we've had for over 20 years, easily over 20 years. Don't they get tired of it too? Don't you guys see what's going on in the NBA and in football and don't you watch some of them buying a minority investment into the guardians

We really got to know where to hold them and fold them as the whole key to that. The scandal with the Lakers and the Dodgers. I do think that is going to lead to much more oversight over how these how the wealthy owners talk about them. A court's then you're talking about the bus family or what what what scandal? No, the the guy already forgot his name. They get the pain over the angels. No, the Dodgers, the Dodgers owner about where where the money equal. Plato where where where the money was diverted from. I think it's going to be more oversight over how these owners spend anyways. I think you're going to see less and less of the hey, I'm just going to spend as much money as I possibly can. I think that especially with evaluations

24:48where they are, think about it. If you get in for an NFL or NBA team at eight million, nine million, 10 million, or billion, 11 billion, if you get in at those prices, you're not then going to go ahead and spend so much more money year to years. It's not happening. I don't think it will. I think you're going to actually see more restraint than ever before in the spending of these teams. I know that's not what fans want to hear. We're back to treating them like businesses and not like toys. Yeah. Because that's what they've been treated for 30 years as toys. I would still rather than treated as toys because there's still some. Yes, because you have one person to yell at and there's that one person I can go like Paul Dolan is a mixed bag. He is definitely committed to the city. I know he can't just go. We always get the Dolan family trust mix up with what Paul Dolan's personal worth is they all like he and his brother and his sister have to like go and spin the key at the same time and get promises from the family to be able to take that money. The four,

25:53five, what six billion dollars, whatever it is and throw it into the Cleveland Guardians. I don't think that's going to happen. So we say like all Paul Dones worth this at the other. It's like he will that that's what he's worth. He can't spend that money. He can't do it. It's because they love James Dolan in with him. There you go. They are separate entities. They always do that. I can always defend you that when they do the value of the games and owners. I'm like, I don't think that I don't think that Paul Dones ever played jazz saxophone. I don't think that has ever happened. But I do commend him for his commitment to Cleveland. Yeah. I do worry about new owners anytime we have new owners, but when you have the one owner, yeah, they can they can pretty nuts. Like you can have a bad, bad, bad dance night or thing where you just keep making the same mistake and making it worse. And then you got all the other things in there or you can try to learn from your mistakes. I think Dan Goberts learned from his mistakes. I think to the degrees, they're still trying to learn from their mistakes with the hazelms and the Browns. And hopefully that'll start to pay off over some time. But you're going to have to go through. You're going to have to take your knocks. But I still think it's better to have one person at the end that you can throw vitriol or praise

You know where we have such a great business school and a law school and you roobs down there, you really don't we have such higher admission standards and you see we still care about academics up here in Ann Arbor and you don't. And then when Michigan doesn't, well, you get to see you guys just you need football. We don't need football here. And I got to tell you, I'd be a little bit annoyed. I'd be a little bit annoyed. I like, can't you guys just enjoy our success and not have to lie to yourself? But like, I do get like, and maybe just because I'm friends with you, it's just like you guys like kind of winking a nod at it. And it was always like, we're above the fray. We're Michigan. I'm like, no, our Notre Dame did the same thing. You know, you know, they did do the same thing. You're right about that. Couldn't win a national championship. So then they had to go to academics. They had to go to we're doing it the right way. And then you hired Brian Kelly. See, and I actually do like Notre Dame. So that's what I have to admit. That's the truth. That is the truth.
