And myself, Tyler and Kenny will go through the entire slate today to end the show and
we'll get you Bill Zimmerman, our executive producers, trivia question of the day as well
after he stumped me yesterday and I thought about it way too much after the show.
I don't like getting those trivia questions wrong.
Joining us right now to kick off the power hour on this phenomenal NCAA tournament Friday.
We were talking during the break as most of us in the crew are in the New York metropolitan
area and how the Brooklyn Nets on the Knicks fan.
But the Brooklyn Nets broadcasting team on Yes is like absolutely tremendous and we love
the team.
I an Eagle friend of the show and when I and does games with Sarah Koustak, we absolutely
love it.
Sarah joins us now.
She's doing awesome work right now for Westwood One on the radio side.
We're Westwood One.
We love Westwood One calling the NCAA tournament on national radio.
She's in the Buffalo region right now called a bunch of games yesterday and what was a pretty
unique set up as far as the announcing goes.
We can get to that in a moment.
Sarah nice enough to join us now live from Buffalo on this Friday morning, Sarah.
It's Nick Kastos.
You better, you bet Westwood OneSports appreciated.
Happy NCAA tournament.
How you doing?
Nick, I'm thrilled to be with you.
Thanks for having me on the power hour.
That's how it feels.
I feel like we have so much going on in anyone that adores I an Eagle, you know, is the
friend of mine because Bernie is just the absolute best.
So I appreciate it.
I'm so grateful for all the excellent partners I get to work with.
Now you do an awesome job and yesterday was a unique day, right?
Because you worked with a couple different partners yesterday calling the games on a
national radio for Westwood One and like we were all watching the other night, right?
The first four games on Tuesday night and you know, Brian Anderson is a friend of the
show.
He's been on the show a million times, right?
And he's clearly under the weather calling the games and he's not feeling well in his
voices.
So we're hoping that B.A.
He's going to be better, right?
So as a result of that, some shuffling gets done like Jason, Jason Benetti ends up doing
the games on CBS in replacing Brian Anderson, who obviously has a sore voice and you end
up doing the games yesterday with a couple different partners, right?
Pat McCarthy.
And Neederman is the voice of North Dakota State.
I thought you guys did an awesome job, just kind of take us through a little bit.
What that day was like for you yesterday, obviously that's a little abnormal for someone
in your spot or just in general for that to happen the way that it did.
Well, I think, you know, I think the thing about that we've all learned and know in this
broadcasting business that you got to be ready for anything and always be on your toes.
And I'm really, I'm not just saying, I think I'm really grateful I've worked with so
many tremendous broadcast partners through my years, through the career.
And I think it's really a small world of how all of us start to know each other and just
create relationships and friendships.
And similar to you, I think we are all watching those first four games and listening to Brian
Anderson.
And you know how important voices and at this time of year was all the traveling and everything
like that.
And so when the change occurred, we were at practice at the arena and more than anything,
you know, it's one of those situations where Jason Benetti is someone, we're both from
the Chicago region, born and raised.
So we've known each other our paths of cross.
We've done a lot of different work in the NFL and other college basketball together.
And so it was a great opportunity for him.
He's the ultimate pro.
So you know, he has a chance to move the television side.
I, we have the great fortune.
Pat was tremendous.
Sam was amazing.
I think everyone's pros pros and they have an opportunity to call it and see a tournament.
And I think for any of us, it's just such a truly just amazing experience because you
know what it means.
I played in multiple ways, the A tournaments, I know what it feels like.
I know that one and done feel on the first day of just, you know, how important it is
for what you've formed in the season.
So I think, you know, the opportunity to just be with different people.
And as you know, you're powering through hours, it definitely is a long day.
That's first day calling for games.
And so I think just the juice and the energy of, you know, having an opportunity to work
with different people, you know, for me with a fun experience.
But for all of us, you know, I think you just, you're grateful for the people that you
get for me the long the way.
And now I have new friendships with new play by play partners.
Well, we'll get to the games in a second.
But something you said at the end of that answer, Sarah, really interested me when I was
first starting as an on air talent, I hosted for CBS back in the like national signing day
in college football.
And I remember, Rashon Gary, this how long ago this was.
Who's now like on the Dallas Cowboys was the big, he was like a big signing that day went
to play for Michigan for Jim Harball.
And I did.
I want to say like eight to 10 hours straight, obviously there are commercial breaks.
You're not going straight through.
And I remember at the end of it, just thinking, oh, my God, like I'm exhausted here.
And I think it kind of like flies under the radar a little bit, even for like, I'm like
a fellow broadcaster of yours, right?
And for fans, certainly you're doing four games, four games, and I keeping the energy
up and having your brain not turned to jello like this, this is not easy.
The take us through that, the challenge and obviously like you're pumped up to be there
and the energy carries you through, but it has to present its difficulties.
I would imagine.
I think it's the reminder and we have all been there.
So I, I will say it over and over again, I get to do something that I love and I'm passionate
about and call it work.
So there's never a moment I take for granted.
But I think it's the reminder in speaking of I and Eagle, like he's someone who I always
think about because in so many ways, my career has been shaped and influenced by just how
he operates.
And he's always been the first to say no one cares that you're like at the late three
hours, you're coming off a red eye or you can't no sleep or you've had six, six days
and six different cities of games, like whatever you're about to do is the most important
task ahead of you.
And more than ever, when you look at a day like the FCA tournament, like for these players
for these every game, like everyone for the most part, they're locking into one game
and one team.
So even if it's a 10 KM tip off and it's your fourth game with a night, whoever is locking
in, you know, from the St. Louis fans or Georgia fans, like they don't care what you've
been doing all day.
I want you to be at your best for that game and I think it's recognizing that.
I think that's a part of all of us cutting our teeth in this business.
You know, we all have, you talk about that stories we can tell, like I got my start calling
Illinois High School State football championship games and it was outside, you know, back-to-back
days and right after Thanksgiving on a Friday Saturday and it was for football game, you
know, it was from 9 a.m. until we finished about 11 p.m. and I'm pretty sure that I got
like one bathroom break in the day and it was normally, you know, Chicago weather about,
you know, it's that time of year, about 20 degrees, but it's the beauty of all those things
that have allowed us to like, you pour into it and then you appreciate the fun moments
and we had some tremendous games yesterday, but I think for anyone, you know, that's watching
what they care about is what they're watching or what they're listening to or the games
at hand and I think that's why, you know, part of part of this business is understanding
in the moments you've got to just lock in to be your best and you're never, you're never
going to have these opportunities again and so you need to really cherish that.
And I say this, Sarah, sometimes it gets to join us on the show and I think I, you know,
we are on video for the people that are just listening to the show, Sarah is someone
that I would describe as you don't need, I don't need to see you right now to know that
you have a smile on your face when you're talking about your job and you're talking about
sports and that's, and that's, and that is, that's the ultimate company and your enthusiasm
comes across.
It's absolutely, no, it's the truth, I don't know if anyone could deny it.
So I want to run through the four games you called yesterday and let's start with the
last one.
I, I'm not surprised that St. Louis won, like that, that's not necessarily shocking.
What is shocking is the manner in which it happened.
This was a beat down that I don't think a lot of people saw coming, you know, take us
through St. Louis, the Billigan's performance dominating down low against Georgia and you know,
their matchup heading into tomorrow against the top seed in that region, the Michigan Wolverines
pulling away from Howard in the second half.
Nick, similar to your point, you know, in eight, nine game, it feels like a pick on
it.
I think more than anything when you looked at this game, there was such a similarity
in style of St. Louis and Georgia of how they wanted to play fast and get out and transition.
It's kind of three point shots and we saw some of the worst three point shooting performances
in that first half by both teams.
So it was a circumstance where St. Louis took advantage on the inside and they were really
dominant in the pain, especially in that first half early out jumping to a lead.
I know Robbie Avela has taken the world in the country, I should say, just in their
hearts and captures them with how he plays, but there's not selfishness to this team and
there was a great amount of balance.
First year head coach at St. Louis, Josh Shers was making his first NCAA appearance as
a head coach.
So there felt like an energy of vibe and a connectivity between that group.
Georgia struggled and Georgia struggled to make shots on the inside as I mentioned.
They really, really struggled from three throughout the course of the entire game, but it's
an area they relied heavily on.
So I think coming in to the second half, they're for us calling the game with an anticipation
of, okay, Georgia and Mike White, they're kind of get their groups together.
I think they remember what the score was exactly at the half, but they were down probably
by about 13, 15 points and they're like, okay, they're probably going around.
There's still a lot of time left in this game, especially when you pay play fast and
with three point shooting and the Billikins absolutely blitz them coming out of the second
half.
I think it was a 10 to run, but it was really masterful with how St. Louis was passing the
ball, sharing the ball.
They finished the day with 27 assists and you kind of just go up and down the stat sheet
of all the contributions for the rebound, scoring at 66 points in the paint.
It was just, it was really a dominant showing and for Georgia, you could tell, there was
just a lot of disappointment, a lot of frustration and just kind of folding there in that second
half.
But in saying that you could see the momentum from St. Louis and they're going to need a
lot of that against Michigan because Michigan, as we know, there are number one seed.
What they've done through the course of the season has been special despite missing L.J.
Cason.
They have got such a dominant play and there's three bigs.
Lendenberg was just really, really solid.
I think Marez Johnson Jr. was a player who had been a little bit off the last couple of
games.
You know, Michigan had obviously come off that loss in the big 10 championship game against
Purdue.
But Johnson had a really big game.
A guy, Marez, is just special.
He was forceful in that second half on the inside.
So in saying all those things, just the orchestration of Cado, St. Louis is going to have their
hands full because I think Michigan really found some of their mojo that they had been
missing the last few games in terms of scoring and point production and some of that three
points shooting and the inside out work.
But I think it's going to be a great matchup and I think it's going to be a really high
scoring game because St. Louis really, their ability to stretch you out, play in a five
outs setting, play fast.
They're going to have to hit three point shots.
But I'm hopeful it's going to be an interesting matchup though Michigan just, they've got a lot
of tools.
They've got a lot of weapons and they've got a lot of ways that they can come at you.
Our show sponsor, Ben MGM, has Michigan a 12 and a half point favorite tomorrow against
St. Louis.
The total to Sarah's point is pretty high at 161 and a half.
You better, you bet on this Friday, Nick Kostos on Westwood One Sports, our guest, the
great Sarah Kustow, joining us live from Buffalo doing an awesome job calling the NCAA
tournament games nationally on radio for Westwood One.
Also does a great job on TV, the yes network where I'm at locally here calling games for
the Brooklyn Nets.
The other set of games, Sarah, that you guys have in Buffalo.
We saw Louisville hold on against South Florida.
Michigan State dominate North Dakota State, fascinating game tomorrow with Sport against
Louisville.
We know Mike L. Brown for the Cardinals here.
What about that matchup here with Michigan State and Louisville off of what you saw yesterday?
I'm really interested to watch Michigan State will be able to dictate the tempo of this
game starting with the Spartans against North Dakota State.
Michigan State, and you would anticipate this under a time as a coach team, but they
just looked so organized.
They had such attention to detail.
The game plan, discipline on both sides was exceptional.
They've got a lot of weapons and they've got a ton of depth, but behind Jeremy Fears
and how he is able to facilitate orchestrate everything past the basketball, the size, the
quickness to get up and down.
There is huge threat.
And I think this time of year is when they can be at their best.
Louisville, on the other hand, it's a lot of the same thing that I was saying about how
St. Louis had wanted to play or how Georgia had wanted to play.
Louisville and South Florida was trying to be a bit of a track meet.
They want to put up a ton of three point shots.
They want to play fast and get up and down.
Ryan Conwell is a big player for them who has helped fill in for that loss of Mike Elbrough
Jr.
And you've got a player in Javon Hadley as well in those perimeter spots that he stepped
up in some ways.
But it was Isaac McNeely who stepped up the tone early for the Cardinals.
He was knocking down three point shots.
He just had a bunch of bounce to him.
Samantha Fru was really good on the inside.
So Louisville has got the ability to play with you if they get it out in transition.
And I think that's where it's going to be interesting with how good Michigan State always
is in rebounding and taking care of the basketball, finishing off possessions.
So it's going to be to me an interesting dynamic of who sets the tempo, who sets the cadence.
And for Louisville, can they make three point shots at the same rate that they did against
that South Florida team?
Because they ended up shooting for the game 52 percent from the Army yard, 13 of 25.
And that's for them always seems to be a big trigger point of what they can do, especially
against such a high level team like Michigan State.
Sarah, final question.
And obviously like I know you didn't get to see any of the other games yesterday because
you know, you're busy calling for games yourself at the region that you're at, but I'm
not going to lie.
We might have had the little, the little ticker's eye, we're doing a little score checking.
I'll tell you this, the arena inside Buffalo, they played the very end of the VCU North Carolina
game.
They were putting out the scoreboard.
So it was the middle, I try and remember what game it is, but the crowd is like going
wild at certain points.
We had to make sure to let our listeners know that what was happening.
That's awesome.
Yeah, there was a lot of attention around it.
I want to ask you about North Carolina's biggest rival in Duke and I'm like, I know
you know what happened in the game, right?
The Duke's down by 11 and a half time.
Malik Brown says at a half time to Tracy Wolfson of CBS that they thought it was going to
be a cake walk.
Duke could have easily lost that game to Seattle.
Seattle can't make a shot down the stretch.
Duke only wins by six.
I made the case early in the show, but like you've played basketball at a high level.
You are around basketball at the highest level.
I kind of look at this and say, I can't imagine Duke walking into another game in this tournament
and taking the opponent lightly.
I can't imagine that happening.
I'm spinning this without knowing exactly how it's going to go, Sarah.
As a good thing for John Shire and Duke as they get set to take on TCU tomorrow from
your experience and your basketball life, would you tend to agree with my sentiment or
you think this could maybe go the other way for the Duke Blue Devils?
No, I actually appreciate you saying that.
I do.
I think sometimes, despite what anyone would think or say, sometimes you need a wake-up call
and I think for Duke, that's exactly what that was.
I also think you have great leadership.
I've known John Shire since he was in high school, as I had mentioned.
He was from the North Side, Chicago, and from the South Side, but I think setting the tone
in what it means to be in the tournament now.
He understands.
He got some leadership across the board and Duke, especially in a player like Cameron Booser.
And I just think this was a awakening of, oh, we can't just go through the motions.
This is not just given to us.
And I do think to have a talent, despite the injuries, despite who Duke may have to play
without.
I think overall that I agree with your sentiment that sometimes you need those little knocks
to then re-focus and re-engage.
And you still escape with wind, so that's what matters most.
But sometimes it's easier to experience that as players and opposed to just listening
a coach or listening to people tell you that.
What is Sarah Kusdak's day like today before the broadcast tomorrow?
I'm actually after I get off with you.
I just went for a nice run outside and Buffalo, despite the rain.
But it was gorgeous.
I'm going to hop in the shower and then I'm going to meet everyone over at the arena.
So I go through practices.
We'll get a chance to catch up with these coaches, watch them go through whatever practice
or walkthroughs or things like that.
Yeah, and then just get ourselves set for another amazing day tomorrow.
And not that I'm trying to get you to potentially break news on the show that I host here.
Is Jason, you think going to be back with you tomorrow?
Like, how do we think this is going to go with the broadcasting tomorrow?
I'm not just saying this.
I don't know.
I don't know for certain.
So I'm not even trying to not break news.
I would you like to guess.
Would you like to hazard a guess?
I don't even have a guess.
I'm just, I, you know, I'm just happy to work with anyone who wants to work with me.
I feel Jay.
I said, that's true.
I'm getting a, are you tired of working with me?
Is this your way of getting out and spending the whole day with me?
So no, it's also serious.
I think, you know, we all just, we all hope Brian is good and feeling better.
But I think, I think that's still the determined.
So we'll just all have to wait and see.
Sarah.
Awesome job.
Uh, just like again, locally here watching Brooke, like you, you do a great job.
Uh, love having you as part of us with once coverage of the tournament, being teammates
with you here on Westwood one.
Awesome job here on the show.
Have great calls of the games this weekend and we'll definitely catch up with you down
the line.
Yes.
Please.
I can't wait for that.
Have a good one.
Nick.
Take care.
Sarah, who's not joining us here on the show.
That was great.
We tried.
We tried to get that news out of her at the end.
We tried.
She handled that as well as she possibly could have.
Uh, she's she's spectacular.
We'll definitely get her back on the show.

the one the only the legendary Brad Evans, co-host of Ben MGM tonight here on Westwood One
Sports on Twitter, at Noisy Quavos, my friend, happy Friday to you and yours, how are you?
Merry March, madness of me, me go.
I hope day one of the NCAA tournament was splendid and spectacular for you.
Well, as you know, if North Carolina had won, it would have been more splendid and more
spectacular, but we can move on from that, Brad, and this doesn't have to be betting.
This could just be like, you're a huge college basketball fan and I say this every time
you come on, but it bears repeating just in case people that don't, people don't know.
Brad is college basketball obsessed.
He knows the sport better than I would say like 99.9% of the people that cover it.
So I, Brad is one of the great college basketball authorities that we have.
What stood out to you, Brad, from yesterday, the opening day of the NCAA tournament that
we can take and bring forward with us?
Uh, yeah, I think let's start with the dookies, baby.
You know, that was a, just a sleepwalking effort that they had against CNN.
I see in a shot making was downright elite in that first half, but what I loved about
the CNN is they played on intimidated ball.
They had went downhill.
They attacked in the post, a cambooser.
You're in the conversation for number one overall pick in the NBA draft.
We don't care.
We're going to each at your own game.
And that to me was a telling sign of potential weakness for this dude team.
And of course, they were short handed right now.
Uh, no, Pat and gone, but we don't always get to be back in round two against TCU.
Of course, we do the Caleb Foster, a guy that was shooting 40% of the regular season from
downtown is likely not going to be back until at least, at least a final four.
If even returns to the floor at all, if dude is still lucky enough to be alive and
kick it at that point, there's some voter abilities there.
I would the Duke blue devils at a team that kind of played with its food yesterday, played
with fire nearly got burnt, shout out to Jerry McNamara, a Syracuse by the way.
What the hell are you doing?
Just get the man the biggest fatdest check you possibly can and hire him now.
He's a legend at your institution right down the road from yet, but Duke to me raised
a lot of question marks.
I don't feel real good.
They're going to survive these region are represent the final four in the circle sitting.
I think that's really interesting, right?
And I don't necessarily disagree with you, Brad, on like his Duke going to go to the final
four.
I predict in Michigan state on the show yesterday when I finalized my bracket, that's
party would go to the final four out of the East region.
You could certainly make a case for St. John's.
You can make a case for you, Connell.
You can make the case for Kansas, potentially.
If you wanted to, we can get to the Jay Hawks in their game against Cal Baptist coming
up here in a little bit, but something I said in the first hour of the show, I do think
that this is going to provide us with a good betting opportunity.
If you don't bet, I think it's just an opinion you can have on the game.
I cannot imagine, Brad, that Duke comes out and takes another opponent likely, like they
did with Seattle.
Yeah.
And we know that because they said that that's what happened, I think Duke's going to come
out and hand it to the TCU tomorrow.
You have an opinion of that game, and obviously we'll discuss it more in depth on tomorrow's
edition of the show.
And my concern is this, you know, the strength to do because obviously with Cam Boozers,
going to go out there, Paul, get you, you know, 25 and 12 in that game, like it does
every single game.
As a guy is effective with a jump shot at the top of the key, and of course he just pound
you in the post.
But what is the strength of a great horny toes and TCU?
It's pounding in the post with David Punch was Xavier Edmunds were the best rebounding
teams among all the NCAA tournament teams this season.
So it was a bit of a strength on strength game.
I think the key in that contest is who is good for best along the perimeter.
TCU and not exactly known for the three point shooting, but hit nine shriples, nearly
melting away.
Gets Ohio State late in that date, nine affair yesterday, and Duke was downright lousy,
shoot the rock from outside.
Isaiah Evan certainly wasn't on the other guys were a non factor against Sienna.
That will be the determination of whether or not TCU is going to be competitive or they're
going to get their asses handed to him.
I think it's going to be more of the former meaning competitive than the latter.
So you and I will agree and disagree.
I see your perspective.
I just think TCU matches up quite nicely with Duke as long as some of those arc shots
drop for the hornfrogs.
Where are you at Brad with North Carolina and the future of head coach, Uber Davis and
what should happen?
Yeah, I think he's going to survive.
Obviously a guy which be ties to that school, you know, what happened yesterday is inexcusable.
That IVA's got to convene excuse it and have his best player, of course, you know, with
a great kale.
They blew it.
They blew a 19 point.
They blew a 19 point lead to VCU in this team.
I understand that, but we don't have your best player on the floor.
That could be the excuse.
Now, it's like a historic moment that occurred yesterday.
That was the biggest bone lead of any team in round one to another team that needs a
tournament history and credit to VCU.
They start to their game.
They weren't frazzled.
They weren't frenetic.
They were composed and just kept chip, chip, chip, chip, chip it away.
There is going to be a conversation behind the scenes among the decision makers there in
North Carolina, whether or not Uber Davis has got to survive.
I think he does.
I think he'll be there for at least another year, but the pressure is really mounted now.
He's got to go out and perform, going to be at least a second weekend appearance next
season.
I still be shown the door, but I was never remotely surprised by that finish.
Honestly, I as a betting man, I took VCU live at four to one on the money line.
I'm like, they're going to come back and make this thing interesting, and they could ultimately
prevail in the end.
This is what North Carolina does.
They're horrendously defensively.
These are was awesome, but they have unreliable guards and without their best player on the floor
there, they were very susceptible to a complete melt and that's exactly what occurred.
Through paraphrase, Adam Sandler and one of his movies, I think it's Adam Sandler, information
that could have proven useful to me yesterday.
Thank you very much, Brandon.
Besides for Duke, so last question on Thursday's games and yesterday's games.
Besides for Duke, because it sounds like that maybe shook your belief in the blue devils
a little bit, needing to scratch and claw to beat Sienna.
Did anything happen yesterday that kind of changed the way you view the rest of the NCAA
tournament, a final four team, et cetera.
That's for Duke.
Yeah, look, St. Louis, holy mother of the basketball gods, what a performance by them.
You want to talk a smack down of epic proportions.
That's what they issued on the late night tip against the Georgia Bulldogs.
That's an eight, nine game.
Those usually quaint flip games, St. Louis, so it was actually an underdog, but you saw
if you watched any of that game last night, it was over, it was a wrap in like the first
five minutes.
They spread you out, they got premier shooters at multiple positions, and they just pick
you apart.
Josh Scherz is a basketball genius.
He was going to be a very covenant coach by high major programs of this all season, but
St. Louis put them up, signed them to a lucrative long-term extension, and he's going to ride
with the billikens for the foreseeable future.
Milk Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, that being won.
Robbie Avila was a ballerina shot column last night.
That is a team I had to really reassess.
He may have a chance against Michigan, because the only way you're going to bounce the
Wolverines, and you saw Howard hang with him in the first half, because they drilled ten
threes in Wisconsin.
Remember earlier the season went in, and Arbor and knocked him off, because they hit sixteen
tribbles in that game.
St. Louis has that three point tendency to them, so that they can display some fiery
fingers from way downtown.
The billikens, they could be primed to pull an upset over the all mighty Michigan Wolverines.
Don't sleep on them.
Brad Evans is our guest, a co-host of Ben MGM tonight on Westwood One Sports.
Brad and yours truly, count down to tip off nationally tomorrow, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern,
getting you set for the weekend of action in the NCAA tournament.
One question, Brad, on tomorrow's games, and then we'll talk about today's slate.
You are a noted Illinois superfan, an Illinois destroys pen last night and covers the spread.
The align I'm going to take on friend of the show, because it was on with us in the first
hour, Phil Martelli, Jr. and VCU off of the comeback win against North Carolina.
The align I 11 and a half point favorites, one fifty one and a half, the total.
Brad, I have Illinois going to the national championship game, so I think the line I will
win.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, yeah.
Where are you at on your align?
I head of tomorrow's game against VCU in about 30 to 60 seconds, save some time for
break down of today's games.
First rounds on me, me, me, me, go with that selection.
The long down side here for Illinois, they're going to have a distinct size advantage.
Illinois gets the longest team of the NCAA tournament field, actually in all of the
division one college basketball.
Their ability to shoot the three is going to be critical.
David Mirkovich yesterday had an amazing game inside and out, 17 rebounds, which set
a school record and a tournament appearance.
Illinois is a bit of a mismatch for VCU in that regard, but flip in the script, VCU with
their quick guard play.
That isn't a kill.
You see a little of Illinois.
So if the Rams can get downhill, draw some whistles, get on the way in that front court
and foul trouble, beat them by a thousand paper cuts at the charity stripe, they're going
to have a puncher's chance.
So a slight lean for me with VCU plus a points.
I think you're going to keep this in single digits, but I, I, I, I pray my orange and blue
march on.
Brad, let's go to today's game, saw Kentucky saw, man, how great is this 38 minutes away.
Kentucky and said,
give us a game or two that you really like for today Friday in the NCAA tournament.
Yeah, let's start with that game, Santa Clara, Kentucky.
I know the West Coast Conference, St Mary's was awful yesterday.
I going to look all that great game against Ken, it's all stayed, but I'd like to broncos.
Steve Nash, you, I took them straight up in the money line, it gets the Kentucky team
that is wildly erratic.
I love the guard play of Santa Clara.
They got bigs that are functional.
Bucky Oboye at some foot one is really improved his game and touched around the rim.
A very good rim protector overall.
I like the match up against him in Malachai, Marano in the paddle of the bigs in this contest.
But Alan Graze, I think it's going to be a different smaker.
Christian Hammond who should be 40% from distance will be a different smaker.
Give me Santa Clara straight up on the money line against Kentucky.
And I may be a little crazy with the cheese whiz castos, but I think Miami Ohio is going
to win another game.
They really impressed a pants off of me in that first four match up.
And I granted it is a step up at weight class going from SMU to Tennessee.
But Tennessee has had some massive offensive droughts.
They are highly contingent on the offensive glass.
And that will make the volunteers ultra competitive in this game.
But the cutting action to passing the shot making from beyond the arc is the elite of
Miami Ohio.
I did sprinkle a lot of action on them to win this game straight up there at Ben MGM.
So give me the red hawks to win another game and once again, shock the college basketball
world.
Brad, we look forward to you and Pat Boyle coming up tonight, Ben MGM tonight on Westwood
One Sports.
And again, you and me, my friends, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Eastern tomorrow.
You better, you better count out the tip off.
I will talk to you then.
Oh, I can't wait to me go Missouri all the money line plus one 10 against the other
Miami of Florida.
I'm out.
The great Brad Evans joining us here on you better, you bet.
We go from one great man to another, our executive producer, Bill Zimmerman is here,
Bill, with the trivia question of the day.
What do we got?
All right, Nick.
Well, we've been talking plenty about North Carolina today and that loss to VC.
Of course, the six seed losing new in 11 seed.
Now, that is a five seed discrepancy.
So a pretty good upset, but it's not the worst upsets that North Carolina has suffered
in the tournament.
Four times they've lost with an eight seed discrepancy when they were the favorite.
I'll give you one for an example.
1979, they were one seed and lost to nine seeded pen.
What are the other three times North Carolina has lost when they were eight seeds or better
than the team they lost to?
Can I give you one right now, Boston College in 1994, right, after they won the national
championship, and that's the Bill Curly in Boston College.
That's definitely one of them, right?
That is one of them when they broke their sweet 16 streak.
Can I give you another year that the year not Tony Bennett, but Tony's dad, you know,
Dick Bennett, they lost to Wisconsin in an eight seed difference in 2000.
Is that right?
I believe that was an eight one.
So that was only a seven seed discrepancy.
Okay.
All right.
That's not bad.
That's when Matt Darty's the coach of UNC after, but I will give you a hint.
And obviously you got one of them with Boston College.
All three of these losses are famous.
Okay.
We're including Tyler and Kenny.
Everyone knows these losses.
All right.
We will get to them on the other side.
We'll attempt to answer the trivia question and Tyler, Kenny and yours truly will roll
through today's games.

Brad Evans, Sarah Koustak, Mark Zinno,
and the head coach of VCU, Phil Martelli, Jr.
How about another head coach from yesterday's madness?
Joining us here, you better you bet,
with Nick Costos on Westwood One Sports.
And I said at the start of the show,
because you know that high point
had to be a discussion for us early in the show today,
following their scintillating, exciting win,
over Wisconsin, and after the game, our friend,
guest of the show right now, head coach of high point,
Flint, by the way, let great name.
Flint Clayman joins us now on the show,
cutting a WWE style promo after the game,
put some respect on the mid majors,
let's get the power five team to start scheduling the midwagers,
and we will find and coach Clayman's words,
who the best teams are.
Coach, congratulations on the win yesterday,
Nick Costos here with you,
how you feeling on this Friday morning.
Man, feeling great, feeling great,
just unbelievable day yesterday,
still haven't fully, you know,
processed it all.
I'm sure it'll hit me at one at some point,
but just a whirlwind of a day,
just couldn't be happier for our program,
for our guys.
You kind of are like one of the stars of the,
and I'm sure you will say like it's about the team,
and that's true, and I have no doubt that's true.
You kind of became one of the stars of day one
of the NCAA tournament,
with your I said earlier in the show,
kind of like a piss and vinegar in a good way,
rant about how like your team,
and Miami Ohio, they play Tennessee later,
like worthy of more respect,
and worthy of more attention from the media,
and from some of the big programs in college basketball.
Did you think about saying that,
if you're like, we win this game,
I'm gonna let this go here,
is that something you came up with in the moments?
I think that's gonna go down as like a pretty
legendary March Moments coach.
No, I mean, it wasn't really.
I don't plan stuff first for things like that.
You know, I'm thinking about winning the game.
They're just gonna happen,
but I mean, really the point of what I'm saying
is I love college basketball,
and the reason I've loved college basketball my whole life
is because everybody has a chance.
You know, obviously we know like certain teams,
certainly except the best chance to win it all over here,
right? Like we get that,
but we love the fact that everybody has a chance,
and I just feel like our sport is going in a way
of giving less and less opportunity,
and that's not what college basketball is about.
It's about us settling in on the court,
and like we,
and if you're just really what I'm saying is,
and I'm like,
you're not blaming any high major for not blaming you.
I'm not blaming them one, Ayoda.
What I'm saying is I'm blaming the system.
We need to have a better system
that incentivizes these teams to play really good teams
from smaller conferences,
because that will be good for the game.
That'll be good for the fans.
And as it is right now,
it would just be down to play a team like ours
in the non-conference.
We got to clean up that system
so we can protect the game.
Can I,
we'll talk about the winner in a second.
Just curious,
like is there something that you think need,
you're saying change the system?
Is there something that you think needs to happen?
And I probably,
we will talk about your team and the win.
We'll talk about Arkansas,
but is there something that you think could be changed
that can help what you're talking about here
to help the sport of college basketball?
Yeah.
I mean, look,
if you're just of a certain net ranking
and you're a mid major,
then you're basically,
your head coach is going to tell whoever's scheduling
like we will not play a team in this net ranking,
because it is in a way that if you play a really good quad-3 game,
which we would be,
if you're bright below that 75 in the country net,
and you're going on the road to play somebody,
now you're,
now you're at,
that's a quad-3 game,
and it can really hurt a team's seed.
It can really hurt their standing
to even get in the tournament
if they even struggle in a game like that.
So,
I'm not smart enough to say exactly how to fix it.
You know, I'm not a,
I'm not a mathematician or anything like that,
but the system can be cleaned up in a way
where these teams can be incentivized
to play these games a little better.
Somebody smarter than me can figure out how to make those numbers work.
But right now,
the way it's working,
it's just,
it's eliminating games from like,
if you just look at all the preseason top mid majors,
they will not play you.
You know,
they just will not do it.
Like we had a high major school pay
over,
over a six-figure amount
to buy out of a tournament
during the season a year ago,
because we were the eighth team to join the tournament,
and they just didn't want to have any opportunity to play us.
That's how important it is for them to not play us.
I don't blame them.
We just need to have a better system.
I like the nod to Seth Rogen there
and knocked up with the not-a-math petition line
made up,
made me and our entire crew laugh
when you said that coach.
Have you gotten a chance to prepare
for Arkansas at all?
I know yesterday is a whirlwind.
This is pretty cool.
I'm guessing for you, right?
Here's John Calipari.
Here's Daria Zaykov,
who's going to be a top 10 pick in the NBA draft.
And you said not a mathematician, right?
I'll give you a number right now.
At our show sponsor,
Bet MGM,
you guys right now are 11 and a half point
underdog against Arkansas.
Have you gotten a chance to prepare for the Razerbacks?
Do you guys care about stuff like that?
Whether you're the dog or not,
lay it out for us here.
Arkansas coming up tomorrow.
Well, obviously they are.
I said watching Wisconsin.
I'm like, man, this is a really talented
eye major team.
You know what's fantastic?
Players everywhere.
And then you watch it down in Calipari team on tape.
And you're like, all right,
these are lottery picks everywhere.
I mean, these are draft picks everywhere.
These are guys who are the best of the best of the best, right?
So it's just going to be a fantastic opportunity
for our guys to go toe to toe with them.
You know, and whatever the outcome is,
this is what college basketball is all about, right?
You've got lottery picks going up against high point
who came out of nowhere.
This is what the fans want to see.
Just the opportunity.
Opportunity for us to compete against someone like that.
And then to get to coach against a guy like
John Calpari, like in my first year in NGA tournament.
It's just unbelievable.
It's tremendous around the spread,
like Hall of Fame coach,
one of the best of all time to do it.
And just to get this opportunity,
man, it's just a dream come true.
Coach, I'll tell you this.
I will have a couple of bucks on you guys to cover the spread.
Maybe win the game tomorrow.
So I'm hoping it goes well for you.
And if it does, maybe we get you on the show next week
to talk about it some more.
Best of luck.
I appreciate it.
Thank you.
Coach, I'll tell you this.
I will have a couple bucks on you guys
next week.
Best of luck.
Appreciate it.
Congratulations on yesterday and all the success for you
and your program at high point.
Thanks for having me.
Flynn Clayman, the head coach of high point joining us here
to wrap up the Friday edition of the show on you better,
you bet.
So look, we were going to do a bet segment.
And then Bill goes in the break.
Hey, like we can have Flynn Clayman on the show,
but it has to be right now.
So we make the decision.
And Flynn Clayman comes on at the show.
Okay.
Here are the bets for today.
I'll give you mine first.
I have Kentucky laying it against Santa Clara.
May God have mercy on my soul.
Miami Ohio plus the points.
I'm laying UCLA.
I am laying Miami.
And I am laying the Kansas J. Hawks.
Kenny and Tyler are also betting.
We're all on Kentucky.
Make of that what you will.
Kenny on Akron, Hofstra, Utah State, Miami, Ohio, Iowa.
He likes Cal Baptist.
What a jerk.
Tyler, LeBaron Phylon over 24 and a half points.
Miami, Darren Peterson over 21 and a half points.
And the other Miami.
So both my amies for Tyler.
And that does it for the phenomenal NCAA Tournament Friday edition
of You Better You Bet.
Myself and Brad Evans tomorrow, nationally, 11 a.m.
to 1 p.m. Eastern.
Until then, I'm Nick Costos wishing you minimal sweats.
