Hour 4: MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher on WMU-Michigan Fallout

0:00Well, the spotlight continuing to be shined upon the mid American conference. A lot of unbelievable moments over the weekend, the UMass demolition of Rutgers. I don't know what was better. The win or the memes of Brian Kelly when he takes over the Rutgers job because that was outstanding. Also Florida State. You see that one too. I saw that one as well. So did I. Yeah. Amazing. So did all of us. And for 60 minutes of football, as far as my clock and NBC's clock was concerned, the incredible victory that Western Michigan pulled off over Michigan only to have one second be put back on the clock. And then another set of prayers were answered as the Hail Mary went down in history and again, CWA today saying that'll never happen again to talk about that and so much more

1:01joining us on our Wyseheart, right? We make it right. Call Kyle right hotline. Dr. Jon Steinbrecker, uh, Mid American conference commissioner. We check in with him. Uh, sometimes often now we'll say early in the football season, Dr. John, welcome to the show. Good morning. Good to be with you. Well, great to be with you. And so let's get down to it. I think the Mid American conference not only acquitted itself so well with the football, but also the class that had been demonstrated from top on down. And I see America. America is on your side, Dr. Jon. So if you could comment about, uh, obviously a change in direction from the night of that victory, what I will call a victory over Michigan to the statement that was put out yesterday by you and your office. Well, in the immediate aftermath of the game, uh, you're seeking information and hey,

2:02we're proper procedures followed, what occurred? Boom. And every indication I saw was that, yeah, things were handled, uh, per protocol that's been laid out for this. Um, okay. So you get through all that. And then the next day, you have a chance to step back and take time and ask more questions. Okay. Why did this even occur? How did it occur? What's happening here? And this is where it starts to get, um, complicated. And it's, it's to a large extent, this was all an issue around technology. Uh, and we have some technology evolving probably quicker, uh, then, then we've had policy for. And it starts with the fact that the big 10 is put in place, a, a replace system that's unique. I think it's the only one of its kind being used right now. Uh, the other nine are using it different. And, and it's a very good system. I mean, it gives them some capabilities that are exceptional in terms of angles and so

3:04on. One of the things that has is it has a clock feed. Um, now understand this. And this is where it gets even more convoluted. The clock feed comes from the stadium. There's a single camera in the stadium that gives the clock feed to the production truck. And so now you have the feed that goes one, one wire feeds into the game production truck, the TV truck, the other feed feeds into the big 10's command center where the reply stuff is, right? So you've got two feeds. And it turns out feeds can get unsynchronized. And we've had a protocol for, I don't know how long, that speaks to the fact when you're dealing with end of half timing issues in a replace situation, the feed that is to be used is the game feed from the production truck. In this case, the decision got made based on the game feed that was showing on their

4:07play system and the two feed weren't synced. They were off a little bit. And that's, boom, that's where you go. So if this is an issue of integrity or anything else, it was not utilizing the protocol that we had in place. Well, yeah, you're not saying, you're not saying anything nasty about them. You're saying they just didn't follow what they were supposed to do, which I think is a fair thing to accuse them of. The only time I've ever seen anything actually turn into a forfeit has been illegal players, ineligible players. You see it, you see a lot in high school football in this state. Well, not a lot, but usually once or twice a year, you see it. What do you think will be the results of all this within the NCAA? I am unaware of any prior situation in which a game result has been overturned as a result

5:08of a protest on an officiating issue. By the same token, you don't put the putt in the hole unless you get the ball to the hole, right? You got to ask the question. And so that's in part why we did what we did. And second, I want to keep in the mind of the DSP selection committee what Western Michigan accomplished on Saturday night. And that if Western Michigan has an exceptional season and we get to the end of the year and they're in line for consideration for the college football playoff or high rankings or high rankings or whatever, I want them to be looking positively at their performance about their game with Michigan. How close a contact have you been in with the officials of Western Michigan University about all this? We've had any number of conversations and exchanges and I think if people have seen,

6:11they've managed this in a way that's exemplary. I think they have raised the level of discourse for how people when they're dealing with that adversity, whether it's in athletics or others should deal with it. You have a couple choices. You can jump up on the table and start banging your fists and screaming and shouting or you can step back, look at the information and then react. And this, we talk at Nazim. You hear coaches talk about it. You hear others talk about athletics, skills, character, teachers, how to deal with adversity, et cetera. Well, deal with adversity. How do you deal with it? That's a real life demonstration of how to deal with it. And I really applaud the president director of athletics coach. You want to talk about life lessons. They're living it right now.

7:12Dr. John Steinbrecker, Mid-American Conference Commissioner on the hotline right now, when it comes to recourses for you, we saw the NCAA come out and say they couldn't give you guys a victory, overturn the outcome. The speaking of protocols, they say that protocol is not in place. This for the SEC, we know damn well, lawyers would get involved and judges would get involved. Was there any thought at all to at least consider that at this point to try to find a judge or at least find someone to make an argument that the NCAA did not follow protocol here. If they won't reverse this, can we get at least pursue litigation? We're not aware of any legal course of action that you could pursue here. I'm not sure that's the right thing. I think we've done the things we can do to draw attention, do a wonderful performance by Western Michigan, to draw attention to what I would say was a miss on an application or

8:23delivery of the protocol. We're all going to get better across all of FBS because of this. Dr. John Steinbrecker joining us here, Matt Commissioner. I also find you in an enviable position where you really have to fight for all your teams. There's a lot of movement going on, a lot of conferences trying to poach. You do have to stand up there. You've handled this well, but you do have to stand up there and fight for your programs. Do you not? Well, you do, but you go where the facts take you is what I would say. Yeah, I'm going to be a strong, strong, strong, incredible advocate for all of our member institutions, but I also need to be an arbiter of the game itself. As we got information, we were able to then attack the issue and point out where there

9:26were flaws and continue to emphasize a tremendous performance by Western Michigan. It must have been a meaningful game because they stormed the field. The biggest game for many of those kids, apparently. I know. That's the glorious sports, right? You talk about two sides of a coin in any of these games. Great joy and great sorrow. There's also economics involved. You can fact check me here. Is it four million? The conference would get being a non-power for if a team were to advance and get in the playoffs. That would be that sounds correct. Yeah, that would be distributed. There's also finances here. Let me forget about the people that bet on the game. I know you guys don't like to talk about that. You know what's interesting. I have not even thought about that and maybe shame on me that thought never even came

10:31to my mind. Other than the fact that I don't want this game to impinge in any way on Western's ability to make the CFP. But yeah, there are economics involved in everything we do. Yeah, so that's what I want to know what kind of conversation they had yesterday. When they denied the appeal so quickly, it almost seems like they didn't even think about it. They didn't even give it much time from the moment you wrote the statement to the time the NCAA came through. Then the NCAA came through a little bit later and said this can't happen again. The way that Michigan won the game will never happen again under their protocols established. To me, it validates your argument completely. I don't think Michigan has a like to stand on at that point. But I'll get back to the fact what apparently has been said is they just don't have authority to step in. So there we are. And also, Commissioner Steinbrencker joining us right now. The fact that in a way, I don't know if you perceive it this way.

11:31I know you have great relationships with the Big 10 and these other power conferences. Do you consider yourself partners with the way the payouts work, the way that they help fund the athletic departments in your conference that these games can certainly help from an economic standpoint that you want to be. You want to have good relationships with these people. You don't want to have to go to court. You don't want to have to try to get the NCAA to intervene. Yeah, you know what? Yeah, well, exactly. But we didn't take action or not take action out of any fear of retribution. Can I be any clearer than that? We took the actions we thought were appropriate based on the information we have, period. Dr. John Steinbrencker joining us on the show. So while we have you, all right, what do you think about the contest to let the guy call the plays who wins the offensive coordinator for a drive thing that Akron has right now?

12:32What did you think of that? I thought it was brilliant. I just recently had a social media report done and you cannot believe the amount of attention that generated. I thought it was brilliant. What a clever idea to draw attention to your program. You know, I probably can't prove it, but I know their ticket sales have increased significantly. You know, I harken back kind of a bill, that kind of thing, right? And good for them. Well, I didn't like it until I talked to Joe Morehead about it on this show because he kind of, I was like, what was your initial thoughts? He said he hated it and then he said if he wasn't the one calling plays, he never would agree to it. You know, do you guys, does this open up a conversation with you and your athletic directors and even university presidents about, you know, what is, what is okay, what might be a little bit

13:36too far and when it comes to something like this? Yeah, no, I think, and I think where you're going with it is, where do you draw the line? Yeah, when does it? I have great confidence in the administration and as well as a football staff down there that they would have would manage that appropriately. And I think they did. So yeah, you know what, it gave a fan a chance to spend a little time consulting with coach. I imagine coach could probably direct the play calls pretty much where he wanted them to. Don't know that for a fact, that was in the conversation. But what, what a neat opportunity to let someone or give people, a lot of people chance to think they might have an opportunity to kind of touch a program. We need to do more of that. I think the more our programs can personalize themselves, I think the better, I think that

14:38will help them grow attendance and build their fan base and help make our programs distinctive in ways that perhaps others won't or can't. We can't be standoffish. We need to invite you into the house and make you part of the team. Dr. We thank you very much for the time. All the best of you in yours. What they line it? Knock down the, well, they knocked down their appeal, basically admitted that they were wrong with their changes and how they go about this. See, that was the thing that I thought that was very important there. I just end that he's not, he's not going to be pursuing legal action. No, again, but there'd be a judge in Baton Rouge that would have already granted a motion to try to overturn that outcome of me. You better bet your ass. It would have happened by the end of the celebration at midfield by those loser kids. Many robes, many get, well, I don't know if they're losers or they were losers. Wouldn't happen at Ohio State. I can guarantee that. I wouldn't happen at Ohio State. I can't, I can't. I'm going to be a real football school. I'll tell you that. He's got you there. I can't disagree with him there. It would not have in a Ohio State. I think there'd be a lot of nasty things said to Ryan Day on the way back into the tunnel

16:40that you're even close to Western Michigan. I do not think you'd be rushing the field, but you are right. If we were in Louisiana doing this and New Orleans, there would be lots of robes and lots of gavils being pounded right now to overturn whatever. But the beauty of the playoff is that it's it is in the court of public opinion. There's no way you can forget about this later on in the year. Like when you're considering Western Michigan, say they do pull it off. They be one out. If they want out, that means they beat Boise State. That's quality program. Maricopa will be pulling for them. It's so hard. I mean, if you're a 12 and one with a big 10 with the Mac championship game, if you're a level one team, it's like your number 12 getting into the post season because all this because I they're America's sweethearts here over the last 48 hours to 1647 for to below 92. A problem that I don't know if you'll ever going to get over that coming up at 945 on the. Thanks to good doctor for joining us. What are you laughing about? What are you laughing about? You're Baker mayfield sweet. Why?

17:41Amazing. Really? What's the matter with that? Because can we just be honest with each other here? Like, okay, you have got into it with Shador fans and it is a little bit much. Now you know my theory about that. I do think that some of them are bots and burners and things like that. But you know, like when they first drafted Shador last year, it was you guys haven't seen nothing like his fan base. We were getting warnings. And I'm like, guys, we had Johnny here. We had Baker here. Now, Shador's fan base is stronger than both of them online. I will tell you that. But today it's my first rodeo with a strong fan base. And when I'm reading some guy who is supposed to be like a, I mean, anybody can say they crunch film in their bio. I have no idea how the hell this guy is. Or sitting here saying that he's a top two quarterback in the NFL when healthy. I go, you either don't know what the hell you're looking at or you never get that. I mean, he's played a long time now.

18:42You ever remotely better. Yes. You either are, you either don't know what you're looking at or you're a cult member. Like that. He was he was too thin. He was 10 in 2020. Um, even I think in some of the numbers that I look at all the time, he was like up to seventh, but it was, it was really good. And they had one year in Tampa where he was kind of top 10 ish. This is what, this is what they, they kind, they don't really share it because I think the NFL has a lower opinion of should or Sanders and what we have of should or Sanders as, as outsiders as fans. The NFL is told you how they feel about Baker may feel. The contract shows you how they feel about Baker may feel. Is there any question like when we talk about top five cubies, what the hell does that actually mean? Is there any question? Was there any question of the chiefs paying Patrick Mahomes or the bills paying Josh out or the bank was paying Joe Burrow for that matter? There is zero question. It's just how you're going to work the numbers. That is, that's why there's that tier that's called elite. All right.

19:43And even I don't even want to put Joe Burrow in that tier because of the injuries that have happened over the last years, but there's a lot of folks saying that this team is poised to go to a super bowl. We'll see how it goes for Joe Burrow. I got nothing against the guy. I'd love to put him back in the elite category. All right. Well, my team's kind of on its ass. We'll see where they go. I'm not rooting for him, but I ain't rooting against him. But the NFL has told you like, 166 is a 160. It's 50 something a year, right? That's a lot of money. I say it's resetting the quarterback market for the middle. For the middle. Yes, that's exactly right. That's exactly right. And there ain't nothing wrong with that because what we're seeing here, and I know that people who get sensitive over Baker Mayfield, because he does have a strong fan base. They can't take it and they're too sensitive about it. He's a good quarterback. He is a very good quarterback at times. He has had elite traits. That game where they came back against the Bengals, speak of the devil, when I will never forget that game as long as I live probably.

20:43I went to the bathroom and half time ago, how am I going to do the show tomorrow? Like, oh, Dell got hurt in that game. You remember that's it? Then when he towards ACL and I go, he's throwing the ball all over the place except for places he's supposed to throw it. This offense sucks. He sucks. It looks like this is over. How the hell am I going to do the show tomorrow? Then he came out in the second half and he did what he did in the second half. I don't want the phone and Matt Adorany down in Magradore going, this is unbelievable. This guy's unbelievable. He has elite traits, but he's not elite all the time. It's called elite for a reason. There's only like a couple that can be a part of that and he ain't a part of that and the NFL knows that. They paid him a lot of money and I think it's a hell of an investment by Tampa Bay in him. You got a great quarterback class coming up here. Now you could, if you really wanted to, you could draft a quarterback this year, but I don't see them doing it. They've made an investment in Baker, Mayfield. That's a perfectly fair investment. It's a perfectly fair investment.

21:43I don't understand why we can't tell the truth about some of these guys. It's going to happen more and more. You know that like Shador is not the end of the line of fans that gravitate towards a quarterback that have their own film crews that have their own people around them. He ain't the last. He's probably at the beginning, right? You know that. Yeah. Like we're going to take a guy like we're going to take a guy someday who's going to have all that around him again. Well, what do you think of that? Let's say if it was arch. So arch isn't on social media like that. They got everything. You think Omaha productions ain't falling him around somewhere. That's what I mean. The way that it's been with with with arch so far, they have been so careful as to not let it get to that kind of craziness. But still archmaning, right? Yeah. He's still famous, his family's famous. And they know that if he stepped in it, he'd be even more polarizing a controversial than he already is. And he's done nothing to be controversial or polarizing other than play football for Texas and have the last name Manning.

22:43And there's a lot of archmaning truth. There's out there. And we'll find out more coming up on Saturday because I'll tell you right now, when we're out and about, we talked to big, Homer, Buckeye fans. And we got to ask serious questions of each other here. Do you do you dislike archmaning because of the last name because he plays for Texas because there was a lot of height? Did you stop watching archmaning after the Ohio State game last year where him and Julian saying kind of pittled around and in Ohio State took a defensive game like do you do that or did you see the last eight games of the season? Now the last eight games of the season isn't a reason to take them number one or number two or even number three overall because that was over a year ago. He's got played well this year. But when I bring up Julian saying, hey, Julian saying it's got a lot of great qualities. I want to see more. I also want to make sure he's not a merchant of Jeremiah Smith, who's arguably the greatest wide receiver these eyes have ever seen. Like I need to make sure going in and I've done the checks and balances. What did I tell you about Darian Mensa? Oh, his mom scares me.

23:45She's a momager. That's their word for it. I didn't even make up that word. Okay. Well, how can I sit there and say I'm afraid of Darian Mensa, but then all of a sudden throw a full-throated endorsement behind arch, manning of all people? You want to talk about involved family? Like these are things that we work out over the weeks. That's why to me, like when you guys are going to throw up the quarterback graphic whenever it happened probably on Friday, whenever we put up the quarterback graphic, to me, it's a watch list. It's not a ranking. I know I have Byron Brown on there. He was terrible on Saturday. I'm still not going to take him out. I want to see what he does coming up, but soon enough he'll probably be honest. I can't wait to talk and see if Arch does come out this year. People say he still might not even come out. But if he comes out this year, the conversation's about Shudor and why he slipped to the fifth and I feel like we have enough information now. It's not a not guesswork. Like he only wanted to play in certain places. He was not willing to really talk to certain teams. I mean, that's out there so many times over.

24:47I don't care what the Shudor fans are. They're just in denial. Like he did not help his own cause him in his representation or lack thereof, whatever him and his family did not help their cause. It's why he slipped to the fifth. It wasn't his talent. I mean, his talent might not have been number two overall, but it wasn't fifth. We all agree. He had more talent than that. Fifth round. Absolutely not. But he did not do himself any favors. Well, the manines are kind of famous, especially Eli, like kind of famously, hey, I don't want to go there, right? Well, I don't know. Well, I went back to college just because he couldn't get a guarantee from Parcel. Right. So what is that conversation? Let's be fair here. If these leaks were going to come out about Shudor and the things that he wanted, are we going to be as comfortable, you know, talking about that when it comes to Manning just because what? Because he's definitely going to go top five. By the way, I didn't tell you that. I just told you that second hand is Gary Myers wrote that in the book. Yeah. What did you say about top five? Like I wanted to cry myself. So, he almost, even if he plays poorly at times this year, if he, if he were to come

25:51out, he's still going top 10, right? Arch. Yeah. Still going top 10. Yeah, but he has every reason to go back and do it. Okay. Or he might go back. Like, but either way, either way, what I'm saying is, if you killed Shudor for wanting to pick his spot, are people going to be prepared to kill the manines in the same way? No. You know, there should be people screaming right now going there is a double standard. There is a double standard. There is a total double standard. And you can, you could basically pull any lever you want on that double standard. You're probably going to be somewhat right. If not 100% right, there is a complete double standard to it. What I am hoping though, like, I think we've seen it a lot with quarterbacks in the past where they go back to college. And we start looking for what's wrong instead of, instead of seeing what's right. Like we did that with Justin Herbert. Justin Herbert goes back and I remember Mirage was going nuts. He's too much of a, he's, he doesn't have the guts almost that's I'm out of the dumb.

26:56He didn't have the guts to go to the NFL. He was going to go with the giants and he didn't have the guts to go to the NFL. I went back to college, but people were looking at the wrong things and then you overdraft to a tongue of Iloa and you underdraft Justin Herbert there and Justin Herbert and how the woods by any means necessary. I know that there's certainly a knock on him. He might be upper tier middle class. He might be upper middle class when it comes to he might be just a taller version of Baker Mayfield by the time it's all said and done. All right. Well, I'd like to have a middle class because right now there's like three elite quarterbacks and the rest we just feel are garbage. So I, yeah, I do kind of hope that Baker Mayfield and other guys can be a middle tier. It's like, hey, I don't have to just go out there and use the T word to try to get better because you know how I stand on that stuff. And it's not just about personal pride. It's also about organization and being the right type of organization and just not waiting for somebody to cover up for you being a moron. Like that's what the cults had done in the past. They did it twice. I don't want that. I want my team to be a good organization.

27:56That's what I want. I want that quarterback. I'd be stupid not to, but I also want to him to them to have people around him. Like Peyton Manning, yeah, he had to cover up a lot for the Indianapolis cults. He didn't have to cover as much as Andrew Luck did because they drafted really stupid around Andrew. I don't want that for whoever the bronze taken quarterback. So I'm hoping that these guys this year start to lay the foundation. So this is a nice place. And this is why I can't say cut the Sean Watson, get rid of the Sean Watson. I don't want an $86 million thing hanging around my neck going into next year that can take us away from getting some free agents helping out our young quarterback. 216474 to below 92 speaking of the current one. I know that Todd Munkin said something real nice yesterday and it sounds good. And I don't think he's lying, but it sure as hell ain't going to be the truth. 28:57Saw a video at Dustin on the internet. And they're show over there and like I'm like, boy, he's got a Dave Wonstett thing going. He does. Not now. Like Dave Wonstett's gray, like Dustin isn't gray yet. But I'm like, man, that's that's bears Dave Wonstett right there, man. Looking good. Looking tough. He's in better shape than he was when he played for a house. That mustache. There is some strong machees mode of that. I'm glad that the mustache is back. I can't grow one, but I'm glad that the mustache is back. My dad has never not had a mustache as long as I'm known him. Forty years, he's always had a mustache. I think he shaved it once since he could grow one and dad's always had a mustache since. He's a great responsible man. And so he's growing a mustache. Todd Munkin was with us yesterday. I think this is a nice way to think. I just don't think that this is the truth. I think it was Lyma who asked him his reaction to Watson's issue with the fans after the

29:58bills game. This was Todd Munkin's initial response. I looked at it more on the lines of a speed bump and just a blip on the radar more than the norm of what I had seen over the course of the five months being here, in terms of his confidence, how hard he's worked to get back to where he's at today. And he did. He came to me right after that. Him and I had a good conversation. He said, I'm not sure I handled that the right way, but I did have things that were on my heart. All right, that's the first response. This is continued about that. He thinks that Deshan Watson can get past his comments about the fans. Yeah, I needed to get this off my chest. It's over. I just want to go out there and play great football. I've worked off. It's hard to get back. And I believe in, I believe in the only way you're going to get the best out of your players is to have a verbal contract that says, I've got your back. I've got your back. I got you. And that's what we've done with Deshan. And we look forward to playing this weekend. All right, you got to say those things, but when Zach Jackson joins us and, well, he

31:01has this to say about Deshan Watson, it doesn't give me a whole lot of hope. Zach, we did kind of catch wind towards the end of the available practices for media that the RPO stuff was a little more of an emphasis. You weren't going to really do that with Shedore. Which is comical because he's not even fast anymore. He doesn't have one skill that challenges NFL defense. But yeah, you're right. That's probably what they're going to do. And really tied hinted throughout the whole spring that experience and mobility had given lots in the edge. He outright said that a couple of times. He danced around it a few other times. So we probably are going to see that, but that to me is just comical. So if it doesn't go and when he says 10 and a half quarters, it's like these two weeks are an audition for him to come home and play in front of the bronze fans, especially with week two. I mean, we just, we've spent two statements talking about the guy who used to be here and the contract he just signed. Like this is an audition to be able to play back in front of the home fans after what was said, after what happened, after what transpired.

32:01And I mean, there are some people who are in Dishon Watson's corner. Surprisingly, I have received those emails. But I think the vast majority of Brown's fans would rather be done with this. The only thing that will dig you out of this because I don't think anybody believes the words. And I think they're waiting for the other shoe to drop again. If there's any more shoes to drop, the only thing that's going to dig you out of this hole is good play. That's the only thing. I don't know if you even had, you know, could they lose games and have him still play relatively? Well, yeah, I mean, they could. You've seen good quarterback performances with a quarterback who hadn't played that great. We've talked about him before. Or we've seen, I should say, good performances from a quarterback to a team that hasn't won. We've talked about those before. I do believe that this is in so many ways for him and the fans, these two weeks in our addition to be able to come back and play at home. Do you agree with that? You seem to. Yeah. Yeah. Because do you think that now this is a question with Todd Munkin? Because I know we asked him, should the fans be involved in any of this?

33:05Should he care about the fans' reactions to any of this? And I don't think he really should. But I also think what do we got to do? That's right for our football team because if he's going to react to the fans, this is where you do have to, in a round of outweigh, consider the fans. If I think my quarterback isn't going to be able to handle the fan reaction, then I got to rethink my quarterback. And I don't know if he's going to be able to handle the fan reaction. Yeah. So the fans do dictate what I'm going to do at my quarterback position. And I have to hope that should or Sanders is ready to go because if he goes out there and he plays poorly on Sunday and then plays poorly the next Sunday, we got to rip the court on this thing.
