We have been all about this and all around it.

What is left to say about this?

I find out from Pete Gwelli this morning on Twitter that this is the first time the Sabers

have ever won games back to back by shut out with different goalies on the road.

Right.

That had never happened before in the history of the franchise.

How does this end?

With a parade.

They they had the stretch going into whatever it was.

Sorry, I couldn't bring myself, but losing to Tampa in the second round.

I just I couldn't spit it out.

I just say nothing.

But parade my at some point last week after that eight seven Tampa game.

Someone called in to point out how again, like this is always happening.

It keeps happening.

The parallels with 2006.

And I just I'm looking at it while he's talking.

I'm like, bad news.

The O16 lost eight out of nine after they hit whatever that milestone was like eight out of nine.

And so I'm kind of bracing for that in the last week and a half.

And what happens?

It's just like they seem impervious to any adversity.

They've come out of the Olympic break and lost one game.

Are they 11 and one in 12 games in the Olympic break?

Again, it's the same.

They're 10, oh and one.

I think in their last 11 on the road.

Also 19, two and one or 22 and one, if it's not, it's not one of these things where you got a.

I mean, you go back.

Well, I mean, they did.

They went to 32, six and two.

Yeah, so you go back that far, right?

That's I assume that's the the Ebbenton game that they win in overtime.

That started the 10 game streak, right?

So like often you got to kind of chop up, you know, like the Sabers themselves,

I think their meaty department sometimes does this in like different.

Oh, and they're like, you know, during the broadcast, they'll like come up with some.

Oh, no team in the last seven games has got more.

I don't know that they do that that much anymore, but I can remember throughout the drought.

Just these sort of weirdly chopped up segments of the season.

Like, look how good the power play is going.

No team in the last nine periods has like, oh my god.

This is just this is just great.

This is just undeniably great.

You want to talk about five games.

You want to talk about a dozen games.

You want to talk about 20 games.

You want to talk about 40 games.

It's insanely good.

And they just keep they just keep finding what they weren't even good last night for the

first half of that game.

They weren't bad, but it was nothing like,

Aaron passes and it's if nothing really going on.

And then suddenly they were at three nothing or in Vegas.

Yeah, right.

Same.

Well, this is their best feature.

Nothing on a night where for half the game, they were just kind of like,

nah, I think they were necessarily bad.

They just weren't good.

And then that took like a minute and 40 seconds.

I know.

And of course, three goals.

I literally went upstairs for a second.

My wife was nice.

These I'm finding these 10 o'clock starts for for my wife's schedule.

We we haven't spent as much time together as we have on a Tuesday and a Thursday

in 10 years because I I'm up until 1230 and she's up until she's up until six

in the morning every day if she's working the next day.

So I leave the room.

I come back.

She's like, it's three nothing like oh my god.

I thought I had a moment here where I could, you know,

go put some laundry away or something.

I don't know.

I loved the third goal.

Oh, yeah.

Well, yeah.

I mean, that's a bomb pass from Samuelson up to Zucker

who holds that guy off.

And then there's Dalin.

What's he doing there at the right?

He beats the well beats everybody back or up.

That's right.

Just a perfect example of who they are and what they are.

Samuelson makes a, you know, 120 foot pass.

Zucker is gritty enough to hold that guy off.

And Dalin is smart enough and fast enough to get up the ice and be the first

one to the goal mouth.

Yeah, it's just, it's remote.

Is that what's called river hockey?

And river hockey is bad.

It's some version of that.

Anything really that is said about something I care about,

My money would heavily be on this anonymous player who said the Sabers are playing.

I didn't listen to the podcast, but I read the written version of it,

and that's where this is hidden in there.

Like, Sabers are fun, the fans deserve it.

One opposing player said,

let's see if it holds up in the playoffs.

They're playing river hockey.

They're good at it, but you know, skepticism.

Yes, 8-7 is an example of a wide open, crazy game and all the fights,

but they are absolutely not a team that is like full throttle all the time.

And so, I don't know if that gets a foothold and makes it on to like,

Chris Chalios or someone is on ESPN this weekend.

I don't even know if he's still there.

Whoever's going to be on ABC tomorrow starts talking about the Sabers during an intermission

and how they're so fast and loose.

It's going to be wrong.

It's not who they are.

They were that way under Don Granado.

They are not that anymore.

So, I guess I kind of want, I mean, probably even though it's the NHL and not like,

football or baseball, the league is too sophisticated for this hope,

but I guess I kind of want to think people assume that and find out that they're wrong.

Like, even teams preparing for the Sabers.

A seven game series is really interesting.

It's been so long.

And I don't really know how to really articulate this,

but if they're different to any extent, if they're different to how they play,

and like, they're a challenge for other teams, because whether it's that high cycle,

or river hockey, or something else,

then I think in a seven game series,

probably teams will figure out how to counteract that.

Sure.

And maybe that's not great.

I think I'd still rather be a team that has sort of the high end goal scoring,

or goal tending.

And like, I feel like I'm just going to have to trust that.

Yeah.

And the Sabers are really not that.

I mean, they have a lot of good players, and their blue line is excellent.

Their goal tending has been great,

but that doesn't have to continue.

I don't know.

Like, it's not somebody that you know.

It's not Dom.

It's not somebody that you feel like you know is going to be rock solid every time.

And they might even end up alternating in the playoffs.

But that'll be interesting to hear people more knowledgeable about hockey,

X's and O's than I am.

Yeah.

Just like break down whether they're a team that, all right,

well, we're going to play this team five times in a row.

Well, I would bet that if it hasn't happened already,

I mean, because teams,

teams, there's a certain amount of game planning that goes into, you know, every game.

Like, you're going to have a meeting.

And like, what does this team like to do?

What are their tendencies, right?

And this high cycle you just mentioned is definitely one of their,

it's one of their trademark things.

And there aren't a lot of teams that have the blue line,

the talent on the blue lines.

Well, I've been saying for months here that that is their superpar.

Those four guys on the blue line, they can play like forwards.

And you just have an ability to do things in the zone

that not every team is comfortable doing.

I don't know how much in a regular season game teams can come up with

and implement a plan to try to take that away.

Or at least, you know, mess with it.

Because, you know, you don't have a ton of times.

Not like football.

We got all week, right?

You got, you got a game on Tuesday and a game on Thursday.

I Wednesday, you know, try to get a plan.

Everybody's tired.

I mean, not even practicing because you're playing four games and six, but whatever.

You get to the playoffs.

I would expect whether that, whether it be successful or not,

teams to have a plan for that.

When they start doing this, we have to do that.

And I think it'll be really important for the Sabers

to be ready with some kind of a pivot.

Because if you suck defenders out,

and that's the idea behind the whole light thing to begin with,

is I'm cycling out here.

I'm going to try to pull a defender out and create a two on one down low.

That's a lot of what they're trying to do.

So I don't know how you counteract it without leaving yourself vulnerable down low,

but some coach will come up with some idea that again, whether it will work, I don't know.

The Sabers better have something to switch to if necessary,

because I would expect especially in a seven game series.

That's where like any question about whether they'll hold up in the playoffs is perfectly fine

to me to like ponder because again, I don't know.

Once a team rolls it sleeves up and really gets to work on trying to take away your fastball,

they might be successful.

I mean, hockey is littered with examples of teams that thought they had a thing like,

nope, defense caught up, took it away.

That's where you want your power play to save you.

That would be ideal.

I think if whatever your bread and butter is doesn't get you there.

It has not made sense to me all year that they are so

motion oriented at five on five.

And the power play seems still so stagnant.

Just feed Thompson and hope.

Right.

I mean, he misses the netline over time.

He misses the netline over time.

Down the right, out the Dulleyne, back to Thompson.

Okay, that's not there.

Passed to the guy in the slot, back to Thompson.

It's and there's just not a lot of flow there.

And I don't know, like I highly doubt that this is a situation like we often talk about

in football where you're sort of sitting on your best stuff for January.

I'm going to save this play for the chiefs, right?

I don't think the sabers are going to get to April 18th or whatever day the first game is going

to be and unveil some new power play where there's they're just flowing around the zone like

maniacs.

But I cannot rectify why their power play seems so stationary and their five on five play is so

vibrant. It just doesn't really make sense to me.

But here we are.

is they're just so new to the dance.

But can they really win the whole thing?

And winning the East is a good number.

Likewise, it's their third.

Maybe it's plus 750 or something like that.

I mean, I can get there.

We've already got Lindy though.

Is that wrapped up?

No.

No, I think they need, I think they will need to get the division home.

I think if they win the division,

I would be stunned if he doesn't win it.

Because the competitor is the team that

probably will finish in second place.

And I just can't imagine even hockey or people who cover hockey.

I'm not even sure.

I think the broadcasters vote on coach of the year.

I just can't imagine them putting John Cooper ahead of Lindy Ruff,

you know, riding a 14 season playoff drought.

And not just squeezing in to the last wild card,

but running, running away with the second half of the season,

which is what they've really done so far.

And there are games left here.

But I think if they hold onto there now,

four point leads still, Tampa won again.

Still two games in hand.

So there's that still the factor in.

But if they manage to hang on to that lead,

I think we'll win that bet.

I'd be really, really pretty stunned if they didn't.

I mean, what does the formula usually look like?

You're a team with very low expectations,

or at least average or so expectations,

and then you go and win the East or something?

Yeah.

Like that's usually a lock.

You know, it's good that you said average expectations,

because there was a reasonable amount of,

I think they're going to do it this year,

out there before the season began.

A lot of the analytics models had them,

like 96 points-ish,

like in the range to be a wild card team.

Not all.

Squeeze it.

Not all, that's right.

Like I know Travis Lightham, Travis Yost,

love their blue line.

I mean, boy, could you be more right about that?

That has just been their magic pixie dust all year.

And that's even with getting nothing from Kasselring,

who was really right.

He was brought in to stabilize that whole group.

and whatever we were looking for,

that led them to trade for Kasselring,

and he's, you know, right now he doesn't even matter.

And it's unheard of to be less than 23 months away from a Super Bowl

and not know when it's going to be played.

You got to have a convention center for the whole week.

You got to have how many thousand hotel rooms.

They usually know by now.

The reason they don't have a date,

I'm told, they're holding it open

in case they get to 18 games by 2027

and they need to slip it back a week or so.

You throw in two buys and then it gets even more complicated.

So that's why there isn't a date.

you should probably take Iowa tonight.

But if you haven't seen the timeout Santa Clara called after their three,

don't look for it because clearly the game should have been stopped.

They wanted to set up their defense and they didn't get a chance to get one to tie it.

So that's the best thing I saw yesterday, guys.

I don't want to forget this.

I want to make sure I say it.

There's this kid named Moneyline Mac, who I've met a couple times.

He bets $100 on like all these underdogs to be up at half.

And yesterday, he showed me his ticket.

He's in the book.

We're watching him sweat this thing on him.

Like he's going insane in the sports book.

He had $100 bet on Sienna to be up on Duke at half.

And it hit $100 to win $2,000 on Sienna first half Moneyline.

I was I was loving watching him watch the game.

And they were up 13.

Yeah, right.

Or 11, 11 and a half, 13 earlier in the half.

I mean, it wasn't even close.

No sweat to win 20 to one.

That's not bad.

The tournament so far, any other important takeaways here,

whether that's how Duke didn't win by more

or what Michigan looked like.

Who were we on?

And how might we want to pivot?

Well, I do think there's there's something to be said

about these one seed that that struggle early.

Usually those teams don't make runs.

And we've seen this plenty of times over the years.

When that one seed struggles against the 16,

it's usually not a final four team.

And certainly not a national champion.

But with Duke, I mean, they're starting point cards out.

That's a that's a big deal.

They've got some issues on that side.

So I think it's very obvious though, you know,

Arizona, Michigan.

And we're going to see Florida play like those teams

are just so much better guys.

And you know, I did a lot of stuff for Fox this week.

And I was getting a lot of flack on the internet.

Because they're like, oh, you've got three number ones

in the final four nice, nice bracket.

I'm like, well, yeah, I mean, the ones are just,

there's so much better because of NIL and the portal.

And now these teams can all pay players.

I think the real thing is you're not seeing a lot of

upsets anymore.

And this is not just this year.

It goes back in the last four or five years.

We used to love the George Mason's and the Butler's

and the VCU's and all that.

And you just, you don't really get that anymore.

And I'll tell you what, these point spreads

are getting bigger and bigger.

As Arizona is now up 32 with 256 to go.

Spreads are getting bigger.

And the middle class is sort of evaporating

in college basketball.

That's the truth.

We'll get you out of here before that game ends, I think.

So you can experience it.

Right.

Yeah, that is, there are many different,

and I don't have to tell you this, Sam,

there are many different forms that betting basketball

can take on.

Yesterday we talked with Jeremy Khan

about the overtime loss when you're on the underdog,

like Santa Clara today.

Sorry, if that's too soon.

But also there's the big, big number

you're trying to cover and all the backup seren,

and you just have to hope like that somehow

that's going to work out for you.

I guess that's probably Arizona right now.

Yeah, Arizona has like a five foot seven guy in right now.

Like, you know, he's a walk on.

And you know, you know, Bulldog, you know,

he doesn't play in big games.

Yeah, he's at the free throw line right now.

But this, I mean, if you haven't,

if you haven't done the trip to Vegas,

I would highly suggest at some point,

and just people obviously drive around Buffalo

that'll made this trip, come out with your boys,

get the boys together, come on a Thursday,

hang out Thursday, Friday, Saturday,

get home on Sunday.

It's just, it's just action.

Everything is action.

Everybody's got a bet.

Everybody's got something going on.

And it's hanging out with the boys,

drinking, gambling, having a blast.

It's just, there's nothing like it.

First week of the tournament.

The five foot seven guy off the bench for any team

should be able to make free throws.

That's why, I mean, you got to do something,

you got to be able to do something

if you're going to be, you're going to make the team.

So, I'm braced for whatever answer I get here, Sam.

Are they a sharp bet?

I don't know what you know here.

How much you follow it?

Because I know you're more into other things.

I wonder if you think they're more a sharp bet or a sucker bet

as a team that, you know, is in first place,

but maybe doesn't have the, the star power

or the legacy or anything else

that you would tend to want a bet on.

I wouldn't say it's sharp at 18 to 1.

I mean, it was sharp when, when guys were pop it on

at 70 to 1 and 40 to 1.

I mean, you can still be late to the party though,

although I would never suggest you go late to a party,

especially a bulldog party.

You want to get there early, not late.

But I, I talked to a guy actually yesterday

who books hockey bets at the Westgate,

where I'm, where I'm at right now.

And he's like, yeah, they're really, really good.

I still don't trust them.

And I'm like, I get it.

Like, and I think you guys get it too.

You kind of want to see it to believe it.

But the way they're rolling right now, the depth,

the goal tending, you know how I feel about Lindy,

we need him to win coach of the year.

And I think that's going to happen.

I mean, you're obviously late,

but you could still bet 18 to 1.

If you believe it, it's just a fun bet.

You bet 10 bucks, you bet 20 bucks at 18 to 1.

I mean, you spend that on a coffee now.

You might as well just set on the home team

and see what happens.

I would probably bet to win the conference,

not the cup, but this is literally like the last chance.

You don't want to wait any longer,

if you're going to bet the Sabers.

Yeah, I definitely, definitely feel that.

And I feel like, you know, I know we talked about

the themselves every week since we've made

the Lindy rough coach of the year bet,

which was what a couple of months ago now already

or six weeks, I don't know, whatever.

I think they win the division.

I think he'll win it.

I think if he doesn't, he's still to me would be live for it.

But if Cooper gets it with Tampa,

then gets the division, I mean,

then I could see that swinging, you know, Cooper's way.

But I think if they get first place in the division home,

I think we're all set on that back.

I think sneaky Joe could coach the lightning, though.

That's my thing.

I just, I don't, I don't think it's difficult

to coach a team with multiple Hall of Famers.

They're supposed to be good.

They're one of the preseason favorites.

Nobody saw this Buffalo run coming outside of Buffalo

for that matter.

I mean, it wasn't even, it wasn't even possible

in the eyes of Vegas, like this is not supposed to happen.

So to me, that's the better story.

They never really work out.
