以前佛祖在世的时候，距离给孤独园七里的地方有一位老公公非常喜欢喝酒。
阿难尊者经常过去劝谏他：“佛祖就在附近，您应当去拜见佛祖啊。”
老公公说：“我知道佛祖在附近，也很想去见佛祖，但是佛祖授人五戒不能饮酒。我如果不喝酒，就好像小孩子不能喝奶一样，所以我宁死也要喝酒。因为我不能守戒，所以我不去见佛祖。”
这位老公公就这样日复一日喝酒。有一天晚上，他喝醉了。在回家的路上跌跌撞撞，一不小心被绊倒了，重重地摔在地上，全身都疼痛难忍。
