How Will Ashcroft and the Brisbane Lions bounced back from 'embarrassing' defeat to progress to the preliminary finals!

Will obviously very satisfying to be out back from last week with a performance like that. The guys up in the box were talking about that there would seem to be a lot of feeling in it. And there'd been a little bit of lift going back and forth with the Adelaide players. And that seems to be when you guys play your best, Woody. I think so. Yeah, I think when we're ferocious and bringing that edge to our football in the contest, like to be honest, this way we just focused on ourselves. Obviously, Adelaide respect. I was out of great wind last week. I've had a great season, so we studied them clearly. But I think, yeah, it was the focus on us. Just being fresh in the contest, having a good balance and just bringing the heat, bringing the pressure in around the stoppage, but also the big boys either end. Smalls on the ground turning up. So I think that probably boils over sometimes. There's been a little lip and those sort of things are more on edge of our playing our best. And another part of that that was very noticeable is even the tiniest little pressure acts or a spoil. No one celebrates a spoil like you guys in your captain Harris Andrews, in particular, but it seemed like, and we spoke to Danny Daly before the game too,

1:01about the meeting and it was very honest. Some honest truths were handed out and seemed like there was a concerted effort to celebrate those little wits. Yeah, I think I don't know why we go away from every saw off and we just go away from those things I spoke about before, the the contest and the things in the game. But I think when we're bringing the energy and we're talking about that throughout the week, and we're training with the energy, we're celebrating, we're picking each other off the ground. All those little things that are present every line group. I think we're doing that. Yeah, we're really hard to beat. We play out as football. We'll send our dog into here. Congratulations and good luck for next week. Just want to take us into the meeting during the week. It's obviously a poor performance last week and then debounce a pack. But how was the player meeting and we've spoken to Danny Daly before the game about it? Yeah, I think Fagg has been up at a bit and we probably needed a bit of a rock to be honest. We know, as I said, we've probably done it a couple of times to see the sort of letter colors down. We know what that looks like, but I think in a final to do it, it's pretty poor. And then we all knew that. We're pretty embarrassed. We're performance and I think we're doing a rating system and I think Dunx is the only one who sort of had a half-decent game last week.

2:04And everyone is below their average or playing their trade-marked footies. So we're really, really poor spots. I think, yeah, as I said, those things we touch on. We just wanted to bring that to the training track and at the end of the day, we can do as weight for game dates and try and rectify that. Yeah, all the meetings this week, captain's run, yes, they sort of the captain's run meeting we do. Fagg's is still animated and sort of getting into us. I didn't mind it to me. I just got to think we needed that push. I think we just had to get on edge and be ready for the hardest game of our life. Yeah, you definitely did that today. And I just should meet field group, it's just that the spread load in there. How good is it to play with some of those boys? Yeah, it's unbelievable. I think I'll sort of sell a broken record. But we're playing our best. Everyone's bringing their attributes. I think obviously, don't leave from the front with pressure acts and his tenaciousness. I think it's really well complemented with all of us boys going through it. Even the wingers, our beds have played a lot of midfield in his time. Leaves eyes rolling through there a little bit. Bales, who are going through the wing and through the midfield. So we're really deep. Mix with everyone's healthy and it's really good.

3:04Everyone's really selfless as well, I think. You know, potentially, everyone has egos to some extent, out in the world. It could be very unfortunate that truck of buying in stuff. But I think everyone sort of focused on the team aspect of things and buys it. Well, Joe, so what up here? This 83 game career that you've started with. Have you ever had a side that started like that tonight? Sorry, can you, I can't really hear that one. Sorry, Abbey. Have you ever had a side that started like it has tonight in this short career that you've had? I'll probably not to be honest. I'm more sure I'll think of back and look at the record, but there's a pretty, I was probably a combination of all the conversations and the build up of this week. I think we were, and I think as well, we're not out of like coming off winning a final for the first time in a while. You know, that was unbelievable achievement for them, but we probably thought that might have been pretty happy with their performance as we were in their position last week. So I think we wanted to come out and then we were probably the opposite end from them. We were absolutely disappointed and shouted what we put up.

4:05So we wanted to come out and hit them between the eyes and that was sort of, yeah, part of the captain's round discussion as well yesterday. So I think on me, we did that, it was no surprise, a lot of boys. Yeah, I thought your first 10 minutes was outstanding, mate. I did take notice last week that you started on the bench. I reckon that there was a bit in the start. You should have heard the boys talking even off here once they saw who was going to be on the bench. Well, I think thought that you put a bit of a bigger effort in. Yeah, if you can go chat to Cam Bruce and meet Phil Cochin and sort him out and do it everywhere, it'd be stoked. But I think it sort of goes back to the same deal a lot, a lot of the same before everyone. So selfless, we sort of rotated around a lot to get the right mix. But yeah, I lost obviously everyone, lots of someone filled. So I thought, yeah, I tried and I was coming off for the 7 minute marks. I just wanted to leave all out there for the first six to seven minutes and then come off and have a rest. Now you put your hand up really well. What about the news of Zach Bailey throughout the way? How did that help the group? Yeah, definitely. It's obviously pretty good timing for us to give us a bit of a boost.

5:05Yeah, he's been unbelievable. This year obviously he's had another Australian here. He's been unbelievable, rolling through the midfield a lot more. I think he's stopped his work and how clean he is. Has really gotten a level of selflessness. Obviously kicks a lot of goals, but our things bring people under the game better than he ever has. So I think, yeah, to have him here, I think it was eight years or something, which is pretty incredible. So it's exciting for him, exciting for the 45th. Has he left any money for you? Marti, I have a coffee within this week. It's maybe getting a pass a bit across, but I'll just be asking for coffees. I reckon for the next couple of long. I'm here, hopefully, if that long too. Well, it's two players at different ends of their career. Eric, you know, there's both players tied Gallup as the other. I mean, it's going to be tricky next week if Anzworth is fit. Who's going to be left out of the team? I'm not saying it's going to be either of those two, but Eric put a big roll today, particularly in that second quarter. And Ty Gallup, he seems very a guy who showed a bit and played in a pre-missive last year and, you know, told him a forward to do what he's doing down back.

6:08He's unbelievable. Daddy, it's very difficult. I think that's the beauty of having a side who's been competing for a fair while now and having young kids who are pushing up and having a crack like Ty years. Older guys like Eric came back from injury. The presence that he's had since came back from his ACL has been unbelievable. Obviously, I was the great role on Nick Watson when we played him here four or five weeks ago. So I think, yeah, it's very difficult, but as I said, that's the beauty and luck out what making that decision, that's up to Fakes and the coaches to make that tricky decision. But it's going to be able to pick from. Well, what a career you've enjoyed so far. And here you are again, about to go into another preliminary final.
