₿HS032: Low-Time-Preference Technology for Kids
About this episode
SHOW TOPICS:
In today’s episode we explore the convergence of technology, education and health. It is alarming how distractions like phone notifications, blue light and social media algorithms just wreak havoc with our circadian rhythms and other aspects of our health. This dysfunctional relationship with technology is what motivated Anjan to development the DaylightComputer, a true low-time-preference technology.
IN THIS EPISODE, YOU'LL LEARN:
- Anjan’s background and love for technology
- Tug of war for kids … benefits of technology versus the downsides, e.g., distractions, addiction, blue light, etc.
- “Respect for that which is Lindy”
- Technology is mis-matched to how humans naturally evolved, e.g., constant notifications, blue light at night, et al
- The Daylight Computer is like the Marauder’s Map in Harry Potter in that it looks like ink appearing/disappearing and requires light shined on it to see
- Sovereignty applied to every layer: physical health sovereignty, cognitive sovereignty, nervous system sovereignty, monetary and digital sovereignty
- Dopamine system encourages people to enjoy learning but computers were designed to take advantage of this same system to make screen time more addicting
- The goal of Daylight Computer is to give some option but not to go cold turkey on existing devices
- The product is just as impactful for adults as kids, especially for reading and writing, and it’s healthy
- It is low-time-preference technology
- Different parenting approaches to digital devices
- How flickering works and hurts users
- Dr John Ott’s book “Health and Light”
- Jonathan Haidt’s books “Anxious Generation” and “Coddling of the American Mind”
- Post concussion syndrome and reason to stay away from screens after injury
- Screen apnea and its impact on breathing and on sleep, we are physiologically compromised
- “The Primer” from Neal Stephenson’s novel “The Diamond Age”, inspiring vision for Anjan’s magic (self-learning) book equivalent
- Teach kids agency and self-learning
- New computer ecosystem
